What's wrong with using extension cords on larger appliances? HomeImprovement

Not trying to argue--just genuinely curious as to the reason. I've read you're not supposed to plug in heaters into extension cords, and even garage door openers can't be plugged into extension cords. However, if the extension cord has more than enough oomph to handle the load from a heater, refrigerator, etc., then what's the problem?

Also, running extension cords behind walls is against code, but what does romex have that extension cords don't that makes romex safer behind walls?
