Dream House v1.0.0 (criticism encouraged!) RandomThoughts

Goals:

  • Minimum amount of maintenance. No mowing grass, weeding flowerbeds, etc.

  • Extremely fault-tolerant and easy to repair.

This would be built inside of an industrial warehouse. The advantage of this is that there's a tremendous amount of space and that there's no HOA to enforce stupid regulations like grass height or imposing their idea of aesthetics. If there's any area with grass it would just be left to grow over with weeds. If that's not okay for some reason it would be dug up and filled with concrete.

TODO: Is it legal to live in an industrial area? Would the neighbors be too noisy or pollute-y?

The lighting of the warehouse would just be the normal overhead lights.

TODO: How often do these need to be changed? Might want to use LED bulbs instead.

Rooms would be divided by (plexiglass?) panels (spray?)painted to be opaque. Different rooms would have different colors to show their function, but none of them would be white since that stains. No ceiling, to allow light to enter from warehouse lights and skylights.

Rough idea for room colors:

  • 00-00-00 Black: Unspecified.

  • FF-00-00 Red: Kitchen.

  • 00-FF-00 Green: Storage.

  • 00-00-FF Blue: Appliances. I.E. laundry machine, dishwasher, etc.

  • FF-FF-00 Yellow: Kitchen with storage.

  • 00-FF-FF Cyan: Storage with appliances.

  • Etc.

Water would come in from rubber hoses that snaked around the outside of the plexiglass walls. Always near the bottom, see below for why.

Electricity would come in from cables that are carefully raised above the floor. All outlets would be near the ceiling. This is to protect it from the water hoses bursting.

Any appliance that uses water; E.G. sinks, washing machines, and showers; would be put into special waterproof rooms with drains on the floor. The doors would have windows to show if there was a leak since opening that door might cause problems.

The entrance to the house nearest the warehouse's door (or whichever door is nearest the parking lot if there are more than one) would open into the kitchen area, with the pantry and refrigerator nearby. This would be for unloading groceries.

All furniture would be made out of something waterproof, sturdy, and heat-resistant. Plastic is too meltable so probably metal. Things like chairs that need to be cushy would have black non-organic pads attached. Black doesn't stain and non-organic so it doesn't mold when wet. These pads would be detachable so they could be washed.

How it would handle different disasters:

Power outage: The industrial warehouse would have frosted plexiglass skylights, very securely fastened to the roof. If the outage happens at night, there would be flashlights in every room. Ideally they would have rechargeable batteries connected to an AC charger. Near these flashlights would be a circuit connected to a set of LEDs. This circuit would also have rechargeable batteries and would detect an outage and light up to show where the flashlights are.

TODO: A way to turn the skylights off or cover them somehow. Maybe no skylights and just use the flashlight method.

Bug infestation: Almost all food moved off-site to a separate storage area with its own refrigeration unit. Remaining food closely guarded. Wait until they die of starvation. All food moved off-site should be examined for insect eggs or live insects to prevent cross-contaminating storage area.

Bed bug infestation: Discard and optionally burn mattress. Leave immediately. Sleep in motel room (search it for even more bed bugs!) until they die of starvation. Upon return, thoroughly clean sheets with harsh chemicals.

Tornado, flood, hurricane, mudslide, earthquake: Don't live in an area where these happen.
