My computer shuts down and doesn't start until I unplug/replug the power supply techsupport

Hey,

I've started having the problem since yesterday. I was playing, and all of a sudden the computer shuts down. I tried starting it again, nothing. No led, no booting, nothing, entirely dark.

I waited until today, still nothing, so I undid my whole installation, moved it to another power plug, tried it with minimal peripherals (one screen, one keyboard), and it started fine. I put it back at my desk, plugged everything back, starts fine.

Then, a bit later today, I was playing and here comes the same problem again. If I try pressing the power button, nothing happens, but if I unplug the power supply from the power outlet and plug it back in, it usually starts fine again (it didn't work just once, and I just had to unplug/replug it again).

I've tried monitoring the temps but it's hard keeping an eye on them all the time, especially as the crashes are totally unpredictable, It'll take 5 minutes of playing just like it'll take 10-15min or even more...

So, what do you think ? I really hope the PSU isn't busted, I kinda doubt it's an overheating problem as I did not notice any. Is there some software I could keep running, that would log everything (temps, voltage, etc) non stop so after the crash I could check what happened right before the crash ? When I'm not playing the computer doesn't seem to crash (I know this points to a temp problem, but once again I tried monitoring it and I didn't notice neither the CPU nor the GPU heating up too much).

One detail about what happened : yesterday when it crashed, I also noticed my Mac charger (which is plugged somewhere else in my house) did not work anymore. The charging light wouldn't light up when plugged to my Mac. And when I tried plugging it to another power outlet, it worked fine. Then when I plugged it back into the "faulty" one, same, it worked fine. That's very odd, maybe something global happened to my electricity installation, leading to weird stuff like that ? Nothing else broke down (no lights, not my refrigerator, nothing), just these two, and the Mac charger has been working fine since then.

ISP says I have Mirai infected device techsupport

I've not gotten two emails from my ISP (Cox) saying that "one or more Internet-connected devices (DVRs, security cameras, refrigerators, etc.) using your Cox High Speed Internet service is likely infected with the Mirai malware."

After the first email, I ran this scanner and it came back clean. Yesterday I received another email.

My router is the only thing directly connected to my cable modem, and its login was changed when I first connected it a couple years ago. Every other internet-connected device on my network goes through my router, most over wifi:

*Linux Mint laptop -- port forwarding configured for ssh, vnc, ftp (non-standard ports used as ISP blocks standard), and subsonic music streaming. Login required for any/all access

*Mac laptop, no ports forwarded

*2 Roku devices (a Roku 3 and a Roku stick)

*2 android phones (when hubby and I are home)

*1 Canon printer/scanner, no external access

So the only devices externally accessible for a bot to find are the router and the linux laptop, and neither is accessible through a factory-default login (which, it's my understanding, Mirai uses to take control of devices it finds).

In light of my understanding of how Mirai takes control of devices, and my understanding of networking and firewalls, I'm at a loss to explain how I could have a Mirai-infected device. What am I overlooking? How likely is it that Cox has misidentified an infection?

Thanks for any and all help!

Weird power issue on computer techsupport

Operating System

Windows 10

Computer Specs (PSU, GPU, CPU, RAM, Motherboard)

This is a pre-packaged Dell PC, I will get the model number as soon as I can, has an i5 4-8GB of memory, 1~TB HDD, and generic PSU.

Speccy Link

N/A

Description of problem

So this computer powered off during a lightning storm that did massive damage to other equipment in the house (refrigerator, washing machine, porch lights, etc). Computer will not power on or respond to the power button being pressed, zero signs of power and no burned smells.

When this issue began

Recurring issue

Yes

Date of purchase

N/A

Under Warranty

No

Cause/Steps to recreate the issue

It will not power up so no need to recreate, it is constant.

What I've tried so far to resolve the issue

I tried various power supplies and could not get it to come online, I then tried to short out the pins with a new supply in with no such luck (could not ID which pins were what but touched them off to any adjacent hoping to find the right one). I was about to call it a bad motherboard when I found a button on the back of the power supply (for testing it?) and I was suddenly seeing the fans spin and everything, I released the button and it powered off and then I tried the normal power button and it came up! Worked fine for around 2-3 hours over 2 days and then all of a sudden she cut off and while the fans will spin when the button is pressed it will not work with the normal power button again.

Other Notes:

Something I haven't thought of is to see if it turns on and displays video now with that button pressed, I can try that once I am home, but looking for any suggestions as to why the other power supplies don't work on this Dell and whether it might be something else? I am unaware of any PSU proprietary solutions that have been implemented where you have to use a Dell brand PSU or it will reject it but it is possible.

Ping spikes randomly happening, using powerline adapters techsupport

Hello everyone,

I have this problem within my home network. I started to notice it while playing some particular games. The problem is that my latency randomly spikes to 200-500ish ping every few seconds. Now the weird things is, in some games this doesn't seem to affect the gameplay. But in some it does heavily.

For example: In csgo(counter strike), my ping is constantly 40-50 and never spikes, but when i keep the ping command running in cmd, it doest actually still spike, just doesn't seem to happen in csgo.

But while playing Path of Exile or Playerunknown battlegrounds, the game gets close to unplayable because every few seconds i get warped back and my latency sees a spike in the game.

When i ping 8.8.8.8 in the cmd it always outputs something like the following (see picture) http://ift.tt/2oc2qPA So 2 things happen here, the request timed out and the ping spikes.

This is how it looks like in path of exile for example: http://ift.tt/2oTidAV

Some more info about my network: I have the modem and router in the basement, this is connected to a following wireless router upstairs. This wireless router is connected with a smart TV and digital TV, and also with some tablet/smartphones which use this wifi signal. The signal isn't strong enough to reach my room + my desktop doesn't have a wifi network card. So in the basement there is also a powerline plugged in which connects with the powerline in my room, in this powerline is an ethernet cable going to my pc/laptop. I get the same ping results on my desktop and on all laptops.

When i ping 8.8.8.8 on my laptops, it also gives some lagspikes, just smaller ones (up to 150-250) but still gives some request timed outs

I really have no clue what to do next, i've looked around and some people say i should flush my dns, reset my router, that it might be some electrical things like refrigerator etc ruining the powerline connection.

I thought i'd ask some experts here that could help me look in the right direction.

Thank you!

Monitor turns on and off techsupport

Hi,

Last week I bought an AVR because my monitor turns off and on at the same time our refrigerator restart (?). I was hoping that it will solve the problem, sadly it didn't. Now when the refrigerator does it thing, either of following happens: * AVR clicks - monitor's good. * AVR clicks - monitor turns off and on. * AVR clicks - a line displays in the monitor for less than a second. Is my PC/Monitor safe with the AVR?

Setup: Main outlet > extension cord with surge protection > AVR > PC

How to quarantine or limit unsafe "Internet of things" devices but still interact with them on network? techsupport

Lightbulbs. Power outlets. Cameras. Toasters. Refrigerators. Oh my! Every day there are new devices that can connect to your network to let you control them wirelessly. However, many of these device can contain malicious software or allow a backdoor into the network. How can I "quarantine" these devices so that I can still interact with them, but they cannot access things like my phone and laptop? I have an Asus ac68u wifi router. I have extremely modest knowledge of wifi, but am willing to learn as long as it's in eli5 format. Thanks for the help!

HP 350 G1 laptop / Windows 10 / splash screen techsupport

This is a minor problem but it bothers me. I can't find a way to address it in Control Panel, and I don't know whether I can change it in a driver or some other hardware setting.

I am running the latest W10 updates on my HP 350 G1 laptop. About 2 months ago I started getting occasional variations on the splash screen display, at first with a query, "Like what you see? We have more!" I did, so I responded yes. It looked like the image was then set to change monthly, with no further input from me needed.

The splash screen has now been stuck for a month on an image that looks like (a) pond scum (b) a culture in a petri dish or (c) something I left in the refrigerator way too long. I would like to change it.

Can I change it? How? Is it an HP thing or a W10 thing? Thanks.

What's wrong with my power cable for my screen? techsupport

A few months ago I came here asking for advice to purchase a power cable for my Asus ROG Swift and I was suggested to purchase this one: KFD 90W AC Adapter Laptop Power Supply
However whenever someone switches the lights On or Off, regardless, the screen flickers.
When someone puts anything in the electricity grid - flicker.
It's really annoying.

What am I missing here, is it the cable or my screen?
It didn't use to do that, then I lost the power cable, bought this one and this started happening.
When someone goes to the freaking bathroom I freaking know, it's so annoying.

Could you refer me to a cable that wouldn't do that?

p.s. OMG, as I clicked Post the freaking refrigerator started working and it made my screen flicker AGHGGHGG

My minifridge turning off on the other side of my room disables the internet for 2-3 seconds on my wired PC. How? techsupport

(tl;dr at bottom.)

I have absolutely no idea how this is happening. This isn't a support request, as I've obviously identified the problem, but more a question of how this is actually possible.

About seven years ago I met with a friend of mine who partook in dumpster diving as a hobby. He'd find all sorts of cool shit, and one time he happened to pick up a working minifridge. It was old as hell, a GE model. Probably 80s, judging by the fact it has that ugly faux wood paneling along the front. He said he was going to just toss it back in the dumpster because he had no use for it, so I should take it, and I did! Never touched it, just threw it in my closet.

About three years ago, I moved, and decided I had some drinks I wanted to keep separate from the main fridge so other people wouldn't drink them. Luckily, I'd been dragging this ancient minifridge around with me for half a decade, and so plugged it in and was happy as hell. It actually ran! Not only did it run, it ran great. Ice cold. It was perfect. I loaded it up with drinks and was pleased.

A day later, I was playing a game online on my desktop. I play with headphones, usually listening to music. Suddenly, I was disconnected. Didn't think anything of it, it happens sometimes.

An hour later, I was disconnected.

An hour later, I was disconnected.

I started noticing that it was at the exact same minute that I was disconnected every time. I called my ISP to ask what was up. Nope, no outage, and they don't see any disconnects on their side. I told him to wait a bit. 15 minutes later, at the exact same minute, my internet cut out for 2-3 seconds, then immediately popped back online. Again, the tech on the other end said there was no disconnection. I asked to speak to a supervisor, and the same thing. They didn't see any disconnects, and refused to believe that I was having the problem I was claiming.

Figuring my ISP was simply useless, I ignored it. It was extremely frustrating that I now had this issue, but I could live with it. I just had to start planning better. I live somewhere that has an ISP monopoly, so I had no other option but either deal with disconnects every hour, or have no internet at all.

The issue persisted for quite a while. Finally, about eight months ago, I moved again. Same town, just about a mile down the road. I was excited, because I thought for sure whatever issue was going on would be fixed.

And then it wasn't. I couldn't believe it. In a new home, in a new neighborhood, with a new router, and a new modem, I had the exact same issue. Every hour, at the same minute every time, my internet would cut out. I thought for sure that it had to be my computer. So I cracked into my savings, and built a new gaming PC.

And had the same problem. Every hour. At the same minute. The Network on my PC would change to "No Connection" for 2-3 seconds, then would find the network and pop back online like nothing happened. Every single hour. I had replaced literally everything in my home, including the house itself, and had the same issue. I absolutely could not believe what I was seeing.

For some reason, four days ago, I was on my PC, playing around online and wasn't wearing headphones. I always do, but for whatever reason, I just wasn't feeling like listening to music, or playing a game, so I kept my headphones off. Sure as shit, I heard my minifridge rattle as it powered off, and noticed that my internet had disconnected. Two seconds later, it came back up.

Holy shit.

So I left it plugged in. Sometime during that hour, it had powered itself back on to cycle, and there it went again; exactly one hour later, I heard the rattle of it turning off, and my internet disconnected. The next hour, same thing. I was astonished. It was my fridge this whole time.

Since then, I've unplugged it, and I haven't had an internet drop ever since.

But I still have no idea how this is possible. I realize how absolutely outlandish this sounds, but by some miracle I actually found someone else who had the exact same problem who was never able to find a solution. Only difference in his case is it happened when it turned ON and off. Mine was only when turning off.

Their suggestion was brownout, but that isn't it. My fridge is on a different outlet than my PC. Additionally, the router and modem are in an entirely different room. Plus, this only happens when my fridge turns off.

It isn't a hardware issue on my PC, because two completely different computers, one being absolutely brand new, had the exact same problem. It isn't software because it is obviously the fridge turning off that causes it, and it isn't networked to my PC, clearly.

I doubt it's something like static discharge, because the fridge is on the opposite end of my room, and the ethernet cable never touches it or gets anywhere near it. Same with the router, which is in an entirely different room.

So I have absolutely no idea, and I'm wicked curious to see if anyone can diagnose this. I have literally NO idea how this is physically possible.

tl;dr: An ancient minifridge from the 80s or 90s turning off on the other end of my bedroom causes my wired desktop PC connection to disable itself for 2-3 seconds. This happens on two PCs, one being brand new, on a new modem/router, and even in a new house. How is this physically possible?

Can i use my refrigerator's voltage stabilizer to protect laptop+monitor combo? techsupport

I have a 24 inch monitor, laptop, and a wireless router plugged into a surge protector power strip. The surge protector can protect them from spikes but I'm worried about low voltage.(I get occasional brown outs and often the monitor flickers when i switch on the fan)

I have a spare voltage stabilizer that i bought for my fridge. Like this one - http://ift.tt/1WWCmAa

If i plug the power strip into the stabilizer instead of outlet, will it protect my devices from low voltage?

If not whats the alternative ?

Will surge protector ameliorate electrical pops from appliances? techsupport

Hi all, I have a power strip coming out of the wall for my PC. On the same grid, there is a small refrigerator. I cannot find a different circuit for this refrigerator. Sometime, when the fridge kicks on or off, it kicks my PC out of screensaver. It also always produces a pop in my speakers, but that I do not mind. There was once I saw a screen tear in response, now I am worried. This can't be good.

If I get a higher quality surge protector, will this be prevented from happening? If so, what are the good ones? Right now I have a Trip-Lite, its surge protection LED is on that says "Protected".

Refrigerator isn't running. No need to catch it, but I would love some help troubleshooting/fixing it. techsupport

I have a 4+ year old Frigidaire model FFHT1817LS4 that's worked fine without me doing any maintenance on it beyond cleaning the inside since I bought it new. The power went out a few days ago, and this morning I noticed the compressor wasn't running, the fridge/freezer weren't as cool as they should be, and the light was off. I started pulling it away from the wall to check out the plug, and the compressor started up. Light still off. I decided to leave it alone while I went to work.

When I got home, same problem: compressor off, no light, not as cold as it should be. I unplugged it, plugged it back in to a different socket on the same outlet, then tried a different outlet. Nothing. I walk away to google it, and I hear the compressor turn on. It's now cooling again, but the light is still off.

A little googling makes me think that if anything is going wrong with a fridge, it's a huge issue. The light being out made me think it might just be a fuse, but maybe it's something bigger and the light just burned out at the same time coincidentally.

I have verified that all the plugs I mentioned have power by plugging in my phone to each.

Manuals and wiring diagrams if that's helpful.

Cross posting to /r/appliancerepair and /r/techsupport. Mods, please advise me if there's a better place for this. Thanks!

My phone and Linux machine rang simultaneously today. Was I hacked? techsupport

This morning I was sitting at my computer and my phone began to ring and the caller was marked private. Simultaneously my computer began to play a phone ringing sound. I sat confused for a moment contemplating how this could be occurring and if I should answer the phone. I decided to answer and when I did a young boy said "good morning, how are you today?" I responded "very well, and you?" He said he was ok and then asked if my refrigerator was running. I hung up the phone and unplugged my ethernet cable.

I am running openSUSE 13.1 with kde. The only server I am hosting is a pulse audio server which I feel may be the culprit but the whole thing seems involved. If anyone has any theories I am very interested.

Different Voltage, Now Very Hot? techsupport

Hey guys! Just a quick question about something different.

Basically I have this very small refrigerator (big enough to hold 4 beer bottles), that originally came with a Output DC 12V, 4.16A power supply. To cool the beverages, it uses 2 fans and a small radiator. It recently went bad and the only thing close that I could find that works is an old laptop charger that works at 16V, 4.16A. It works fine, but the power supply runs pretty hot (about 130 F after a half hour). Is this normal, am I at any risks, and should I be concerned? Thank you!

My wireless internet connection is awful. It always goes in and out. A year at this address, and I am ready to pull my hair out! Can anyone help diagnose the problem? techsupport

I moved into my home last year and we switched our AT&T wireless internet to our new home. We had many problems connecting to our internet through the wireless connection. AT&T customer service was so awful, we broke our contract and switched to Charter internet.

We have problems with Charter now, too. Here's the problem:

I sit down and start working on my Macbook Pro in my office, which is outside in the garage. I work about thirty minutes, before my internet stops working. I loose the connection. I turn off my wi-fi connection with the airport icon. I turn my airport back on. The little connection lines start waving up and down for a while. Eventually, I get my connection back, but only after I turn my airport off. Sometimes the wi-fi connection bars wave up and down forever, and then go away.

Sometimes, in the worst case, the connection goes away and I get an exclamation point over the icon. Sometimes it will work fine all day, until my employee gets to work. When she turns on her computer and starts working, I start loosing my connection.

This happens when I am in my office in the garage. It happens when I am in my kitchen, right next to the charter modem/airport (not sure if that's what is is called anymore?). It happens when I am in my bedroom, two rooms away from the kitchen. It happens in the day and at night. More recently, it's happening two-three times per hour. I have an eBay store, and every time this happens, I loose the work I'm doing listing on eBay's site.

I have called Charter and they say there is nothing wrong with my connection. They even sent out a specialist, and he did nothing.

Sometimes the internet will be fine for a week, then it will start this up again. I have asked people in my neighborhood if they have similar problems, and I get various answers. My father claims it's because I live in a low-income neighborhood in my city. His theory is that Charter doesn't care about my neighborhood, so we get a bad connection.

I have been told I could be living in a dead zone. Or maybe I have some interference. However, we have no baby monitors, no TVs, or microwaves in our home. The modem/airport is not located near a refrigerator or anything else that might be blocking the connection. I DO have an unused alarm system in the house, and the box it is connected to is always humming (no clue if that matters, but I thought I'd mention it).

I have also been told to hook up my computer to ethernet and see if the problem continues. However, we don't have computers that are ethernet compatible. Macbook Pros....

I was about to call a tech company in town to see if I could get some professional help, but then I remembered reddit. Can anyone help me diagnose this problem? Or lend me some insight? Thank you.

TL;DR: Wireless internet goes in and out, all day long.

Edit: TL;DR

Edit 2: I also have a ALMOND Wireless Router / Range Extender that we have set up. Whether it is on or off, we have this same problem.

Cooled my DSL through refrigerator's freezer, now WIFI won't work techsupport

Since summer vacation started (April-May), our computer and dsl rarely got turned off, so when they overheat (very rarely) I put them (hard drive, dsl, graphics card) in the freezer to cool down for 5-15 seconds. But today I forgot to remove the dsl from the freezer for maybe 1-2 minutes since I was cleaning, when I used it, the computer connects to the internet but the phones won't connect to the wifi, they would only show Not in range. Any way to fix it without calling the service provider? Thank you.
