Spontaneous Root Generation Of Lemon Thyme Cutting in Refrigerator. gardening

Hello everyone, I observed a strange phenomenon last winter, and I would like to know if anyone has observed anything similar.

Last winter, I had a cutting from a Lemon Thyme plant that I had intended to clone with rooting gel. However, I forgot about it, and left it in a moist paper towel in the fridge, inside of a plastic bag. When I found it, about a month later, I observed, to my surprise, that it had grown roots on its own.

Surmising that it had already been cold-hardened, I planted it outside. I did insulate it on the first truly cold nights it experienced, by putting its pot into a hole in the ground and covering the pot with a plastic bag.

The cloned lemon thyme survived the winter, and began to grow new leaves in the spring. I would include pictures and such, but in the Spring, a puppy uprooted it. I replanted it and moved the pot about 100 yards away from where it was before. The next day, the puppy uprooted it again. So, that is how my spontaneous clone met its end.
