"My sparkling water isn't sparkling!" TalesFromRetail

I know we all have that one customer that throws a fit every time they come in, no matter what. Here’s a story about one of mine. We’ll call him SW for sparkling water. For reference, I work at a sandwich shop/deli thing with a mini grocery section.

SW comes in and goes straight to the salad bar and grabs everything with his hands, even though we have plenty of utensils there. He slams his salad on the counter and leans over to get my attention from where I am.

Me: Hi SW how are you today? Are you ready to ring up?

SW: No! He stares at me for a couple seconds, but turns around and grabs three glass bottles of sparkling water from our refrigerator. He opens and drinks one of them without breaking eye contact at all.

SW: I’m not paying for that one. It was flat so someone must have opened it.

Wow, who would do such a thing- that's beyond rude.

My manager jumps in at this point and decides not to charge him for whatever reason. Keep in mind that he does this a couple times a month. I take over again at that point and finish ringing him out.

Me: Did you need a bag, SW?

SW: (rolls eyes) Of COURSE I want a bag!

As he was saying that, he uncapped both of the waters and drinks half of each of them, and tosses the caps on the counter.

Me: Do you want your drinks in the bag?

SW: (intense staring) Obviously.

I shouldn’t have even asked but I guess either way I couldn’t win. SW didn’t want to cap his own water, so he just watched me awkwardly fumble for the caps. Once I finally get everything together with him intensely staring at me I hand him the bag and tell him to have a wonderful day with the biggest smile I can manage. His wife called a little later and apologized for his behavior, which also included him breaking the bottles in the parking lot. My manager was shocked that he would break the bottles. I was shocked that he had a wife.
