hi r/frugal. I'm a long time lurker and first time poster, but now I find myself in a specific situation I need help with. I've recently moved in with a friend and her family. Its me, my friend , her fiance, & her sister. Her brother lives here as well, but he has a refrigerator in his room and doesnt eat with us... until he runs out of food. then anything microwaveable and easy, he takes from the big kitchen and stashes in his room, leaving us with way less than we bought. My friend and I both receive 200 dollars in food stamps (we're low income), while her brother has a job, so its very frustrating to deal with, to say the least.
So heres my question, in order to feed 4 people, on a 400 dollar budget, what should we be buying in order to make it last? it sounds like a lot, but prices in california are HIGH, and with her brother dipping in and stealing large amounts of food, our supply is low within 2 and a half weeks.
- would it be easier to meal prep and freeze for when its time to make?
- what to do about picky eaters? We'll make food in bulk, but the younger sister will not eat anymore if shes tired of it
- are there any websites for frugal recipe making?
- whats a smart way to cut grocery costs in half, and also make sure we have some left over in case we need to re-up on groceries halfway through the month?
- How to prevent being short changed if her brother steals food ? TIA!
