I’ve been trying to reduce my electric usage but I’ve noticed no matter what I do I can’t go below 8kWh/day. What should my daily usage be when I’m not home? Frugal

My power company sends me daily notifications of my electricity usage. So I was surprised to see that while I was on vacation, during the winter, my daily electric usage was 8kWh. I have gas heat and gas water heater. The only things that would be consuming electricity while I’m not home are my appliances, which aren’t that many. The appliances that are always on are my refrigerator, one small chest freezer, my modem and WiFi router, the clocks on the microwave, stove, coffee maker, and the outside lights that come on at night and are LEDs, oh, and a 29” TV which was plugged in but not on. Would those appliances be consuming 8 to 9kWh daily? Is that a normal minimal consumption?

If not, what would be the likely culprit of that usage?

Is it still good or should I throw it? Frugal

I I bought a turkey deep fryer the other day and on Christmas I deep fried me a turkey. After I was done deep frying it I drained the oil, but I did not strain any particles out and I did not put it in the refrigerator I just put it back into its original container and set it on my shelf in the pantry. When I look at the container that it's in the oil is a little bit darker than it normally should be and it has a little bit of a scent as well but not the scent of rotten food or rancid at least I don't think so plus I just got done deep frying a turkey in it 6 or 7 days ago. My question is do you think the oil is still good for me to use today if I were to fry some chicken in there? I have about a half a gallon of brand new peanut oil and then I have a gallon of used peanut oil that I used to fry the Turkey in. When I look in the container there is no food particles that I can see with my naked eye, but like I said it does have a little bit of a scent to it and it is a little off colored.

How should I design a nutritionally complete and frugal vegetarian/pescetarian diet that requires little/no refrigeration? Frugal

The "little/no refrigeration" part is because I want to be able to "boondock", or live in an RV in rural areas, with minimal cost (which means not running a refrigerator). So I am looking for items that have good shelf life, shooting for a month in-between restocking trips.

I imagine that lentils and quinoa would be staples. Potentially soybeans as well, and I figure I would also sprout the soybeans and lentils to improve nutrient profiles and protein content.

I also imagine some canned goods would be a significant part of my diet to fulfill my requirements of nutritional completeness and shelf-life. But I'm not sure what I would need to be nutritionally complete, and that's where I'm looking for knowledge and ideas.

I am looking to compromise on the frugal aspect rather than compromising on the health/nutrition aspect. I'd appreciate any insight anyone can give me.

Cheap eating tips ($100/month) with limited refrigeration/freezer space? Frugal

So, my roommate and I have a small dorm sized refrigerator. We split the space half and half and the freezer itself is extremely small. I'm just looking for some tips on things that would be good ideas that do not require refrigeration. We do have a Rice Cooker/crock pot and for my next grocery trip I already plan on purchasing a large 20 lb. bag of white rice. Basically just looking for good ideas to go with that.

Lunch Ideas - No Fridge Frugal

I recently lost the ability to have a refrigerator in my cubicle at work. Normally, I stock up on perishables every week and keep them in my fridge, then make my own lunches every day. I still have ways to continue making my own lunch every day, but the lack of a fridge has limited my options.

Looking for an App Frugal

Hi Frugal!

I was wondering if any of you knew of an app that could help households reduce the amount of food they may be unintentionally wasting. In so many words, I envision it working by having you first create an inventory of all the food you currently have within your pantry/refrigerator/freezer, and then build recipes based upon the ingredients you already have.

Does anyone know if such an app exists?

My coffee habit is ruining my budget, please help! Frugal

So I just started a grad program and we are in class for 6-7 hours every day. I make coffee at home before I go, but almost every day I break down and buy a 4 dollar latte from the place in the class building.

Some constraints: I could bring coffee, but I'd have it for about 30 minutes at the beginning of my first class, and then nothing for the rest of the day. Options around campus:

1. halal carts with 1 dollar really bad coffee
2. starbucks next to my class building with long lines.
3. expensive espresso bar type thing in my class building.
4. there are no refrigerators or coffee machines in the class buildings.

Help me figure this out, and tell me what is reasonable. My spending usually only comes out to 60 a week, broken down by 2-3 meals out, and around 25 dollars on coffee during the week.

I've been renting for 5+ years now. At first, it was dodgy sharehousing and all my furniture was thrifted, handed down or dodgy flat pack items. I have gradually replaced most items as they have broken or needed upgrading, including spending a reasonable amount of money on items that I consider to be investments longer term (a mattress, a comfortable lounge, an energy efficient washing machine and refrigerator, etc). I'm in a reasonable position financially. If I were to be burgled or my home destroyed, I would likely be able to replace the basics (but not without taking the majority of my savings - and I would prefer to keep the savings in tact). I'm in the process of rebuilding my emergency fund after a few financial nightmares earlier this year. In your opinion, is taking out contents insurance a good idea?
