Let me know if this should be posted elsewhere.
I moved into a house last June and found that the labels on the circuit breaker box do not match up with which circuits they actually control. I spent an hour or so tonight flipping breakers and seeing what lights turn off/which outlets no longer had power. I found that there are some crazy electrical circuit configurations in this house, and I wonder if this should cause a person any concern. The house was built in 1955, and has had the basement completely re-done before we moved in. Below is each breaker and which rooms/outlets I found they control.
- Main
- Main
- Refrigerator; GFI next to kitchen sink, outlet next to kitchen patio door
- Stove (gas); microwave
- Basement laundry room GFIs; basement bathroom GFIs
- Main level bathroom GFIs
- Basement storage room; main level kitchen lights
- Three basement outlets; one main level outlet
- Main level bathroom lights; main level guest bedroom lights
- One main level living room outlet; all of master bedroom; all of dining room
- Furnace
- Dishwasher; outlet above dishwasher
- Basement bedroom
- Laundry room lights; basement bathroom lights; basement living room lights; main level living room outlet
Mainly what concerns me is when there are circuits controlling outlets and lights across floors. Or where a circuit controls one outlet in the living room and all of the power to the master bedroom and dining room. Having said that, I haven't had any issues with breakers tripping due to being overloaded.
Do I need to have this looked at, or is it one of those let it be until there is a real problem?
