[QUESTION] Playing electric blues unaccompanied Guitar

So as my playing (very slowly) progresses, I'm realising that the sort of thing in this post

is what I want to play. What is he actually doing here? I know little bits and pieces of theory, but are there a few versatile chord shapes I can use for a loose solo blues like this? The 1 is a Hendrix chord, but just moving a Hendrix chord from 1 to 4/5 sounds clunky and boring, I feel like there's something that should just click here but I'm missing it.

I'm sure it's been asked before but I've searched and can't find much, if there's anything you guys can share that sheds some light on how to play like this I'd appreciate it.
