My mom is in her 60s. She's living off social security, which isn't much. My dad passed away 10 years ago, and she isn't dating anyone so there's no extra income. In the last few months.. her house has been falling apart. Her garbage disposal stopped working, her kitchen faucet is leaky and clogged with sediment and barely works. Her lawn mower just broke down last weekend and she had to get a new one. Both of her bathtubs are rusting and need to be replaced (which requires also replacing the tile .. very expensive job). She has no couches or chairs. She's living with concrete floors because she can't afford new flooring. She has tens of thousands in repairs that need to be done and she simply cannot afford it. And to top it all off, about 2 months ago her refrigerator went out.. the most expensive appliance in the kitchen, of course. It's still "kind of" works, in that, she has to reset it about 6 times a day otherwise it stops cooling and everything gets warm, and even that doesn't always work.
It's completely overwhelming for her and I can't stand it because there isn't much I can do. Well, today I did something and I am so excited. I just went and bought her a near top of the line $3000 refrigerator out of my house savings, and she has no clue. It's being delivered tomorrow. I came and brought lunch over as soon as I got back from the hardware store and she was in the kitchen, damn near in tears, mopping up pools of water because the ice melted again (nearly a daily occurrence). I absolutely cannot wait until the new fridge gets here tomorrow.
Every time one of her appliances fails, she has go to buy a budget replacement.. something that looks "good enough" and isn't too expensive. Then she has to put it on a no interest payment plan for like the entire next year, which hurts every month. This time she gets something nice... really nice.. for free. She is going to cry tomorrow, and I probably will too.
It feels so good to help someone out, tomorrow is going to be awesome.
Just wanted to share.
