Hello, Deli Clerk at a WA Kroger owned store. Working here is awful.
It takes SO long to get to your first raise. I've been here for 10 months and still have 100+ hours to go.
Scheduling is awful. They never have enough people on, our department doesn't have enough hours for the amount of people we have (pt20 and pt40 mean almost nothing) and for some reason we're ALWAYS extra short-staffed whenever we know corporate or ecolab are going to be coming by. I can't tell you how many times it's been just 3 people behind the counter (one cooking, therefore unable to help CS) during a lunch rush.
That stupid-ass "make it right" policy. Fuck that. I can get fired on the spot for grabbing my own sample of a new product but I'm allowed to throw 20$ worth of product at a customer? Bullshit.
Our customers are the dumbest motherfuckers. We started printing out the customer comments from surveys so employees have something to read in the breakroom, and let me tell you some of my favorites.
First, we have the people who have nothing but complaints but still list themselves as "highly satisfied". Like, you spend an entire paragraph complaining about how badly the pharmacy fucked up your prescription. Are you sure that's what you want to use?
- Someone was pissy about how the bananas she got "didn't look fresh, they were getting brown spots". So she put them in the fridge. SHE PUT HER BANANAS IN THE MOTHERFUCKING REFRIGERATOR TO PREVENT THEM FROM BROWNING.
And the cherry on top, someone complaining about the location of the baby supplies (cribs, strollers, ect) using the exact words "Babies are seasonal". Babies. Are. Seasonal.
I have to deal with these idiots every day. Asking if this product is gluten free, and getting it even after I mention nothing we have is celiac-friendly. Asking me to open an entirely new chub of meat because they don't like the size of the one I opened a half hour ago. Critiquing the way I spoon mashed potatoes because they "spent 20 years as a chef". Making me gag with their vile odors and open-mouthed chewing. And day after miserable day I have to stand there and allow them to abuse me with a smile on my face or I'll get fired. All so I can get a measly check at the end of the week that's had 25% taken out thanks to taxes and BS union dues.
Also the union never sent me my insurance card (I even called them about it) so they've been more than useless. So tired of Kroger.
