4 months of a 1 year lease & I may curse out my roommate (extremely long vent) badroommates

Where do I even begin. This is going to be long.

So I (22/m) had the perfect roommate for about 4 years from being matched freshman year & moving out together to get our own apartment (which was a nightmare) but we finally found an amazing two bedroom & had a temporary third who we split everything equally with for about 3 months. Then it was just him & I and everything was bliss. Fast forward through 2017, we both graduate, he goes to law school & moves out, I really want to keep the apartment because it’s the most bang for your buck you can get in Staten Island, let alone NYC. So he moves out and his girlfriend (22/f) since freshman year moves in in his stead (at this point, I’ve basically lived with her for years too but she brings her own host of problems that we won’t even get into). However, she couldn’t afford to split just the two of us so we start looking for a third to keep things cheap while I transition to full time work & we both finish our masters (mine in accounting which means CPA prep). So a guy (21/m) I kinda wanted to live with from school reached out & he was my bestfriend’s mentee so I figured there would be little harm. The most I knew about him to the point of living space was that he was frugal so splitting household groceries and supplies more than likely wasn’t going to be a thing, fine.

Now let’s recap the last 4 months after he moves in at the end of August because she’s a completely different set of slightly more manageable issues.

The frugality: I am a fan of saving money where I can and often time make a lot of cutbacks & sacrifices with the intention of saving money. For the month I lived alone in the summer, I was sure to moderate my electricity use and how much I cooked, always making large batches of food at once to ensure I got the most bang for my buck. Now this kid (just realized I haven’t given him a name, let’s go with Toby, like Toby from the office and in all instances of our encounters I am Michael Scott), came in asking how could we keep the utilities at a minimum since he didn’t want to have to chuck out that much for bills. I told him what the minimum was based on two people living here & not really being here all the time. Cool. Fast forward and each month the bill more than doubles for gas & electric. So upon his asking why I keep charging more each month (since I continued my lease & just added them, everything financial funnels through me), I say that with the increase of people here that it might just be the bills catching up. Lies, fables, and lies. On the occasions when I have been home during the day and can see how he operates, I can tell you exactly how the bill keeps rising. When Toby cooks, no matter the time of day, he turns on two kitchen lights, and sets up three burners on our gas stove to make his food (did I mention that he cooks every single meal he eats, on the stove, everyday), at which point he will usually go to turn on the bathroom lights with the attached fan while he goes back to prepping his food, then he will start boiling some water, turn on the shower water (not a single light has been altered) and go to his room to pick out new clothes and text for however long he’s enthralled with his phone (averages 5-10 minutes), then go to the bathroom and take his shower (stoves still burning and no one is in the kitchen). *I’m aware I sound completely crazy tracking all of this but for background, I grew up with a military family & when I was younger, I was used to people breaking into he house (who both did & did not live there), so I have been used to tracking the sound of footsteps and appropriating them to people so I can know who is doing what/around and he has an off-cadence that is very distinct.

The cooking: as mentioned before, Toby cooks every single meal, every single day. This means that at least three times a day, there are three burners he occupies each time to create his food. He actually eats the exact same thing everyday: chicken breast, brown rice & mixed vegetables that come in the microwave bags. Now Toby and our female roommate don’t get along & one of his chief reasons for not liking her is that she eats crap food because she’ll eat a microwaveable meal or a bunch of cheap carbs or eat out which he finds so deplorable for someone to not care about what they eat. Did I mention Toby is frugal? So frugal that during his weekly grocery shopping he buys the lowest quality chicken breasts because they are the cheapest & everyone he complains to about her, mentions his low-grade eating habits. Also frugal enough to realize he eats crap food and switch the labels of regular produce & organic produce before heading to checkout, yes that happened. But for his crap chicken, he knows it tastes bad and what do you do when things taste bad, season it. I had a fully stocked kitchen with pans, utensils, ware and everything. Since he has been here, he has absolutely scorched my non-stick pan to the point that anything you put in it, will stick at some point because of all the sriracha and pre-mixed seasonings (he uses something called Flavor, like it’s the actual company name & I saw them on Instagram). Now do whatever you need to do to get yourself through some bad food but when I say scorched! Everytime he cooks, everyone (myself, my other roommate & our boyfriends) avoids the kitchen because there is a large air of smoke that chokes you, burns your lungs & nostrils and makes it unbearable to breathe. Not exaggerating in the slightest, even while he cooks, he will cough and sneeze (doesn’t really cover his mouth either which is just an issue in and of itself) throughout the entire time.

Toby brags: this is less irritating but still just something I want off my chest. We’re not friends, we’re cool but we are not friends. I have had the same boyfriend since February, our roommate has her boyfriend & Toby is single. Now Toby was seeing a girl from a school up the road, in which she would come over late night, he would cook and eat in front of her (never once heard him offer her anything) and whenever she wanted to go out, he would bring up to me that he had a date in a bragging kind of way as if I cared immediately followed by my advice on when to start asking the girl to pay for meals and the like. Didn’t really have advice there. Next chick that pops up, flys all the way from Florida but that’s none of my business. They screw, he needs new sheets, he tells me, I’m proud for him, he tried for a solid two weeks to give me full details as if I cared, avoiding that became a Long spiral of not coming out my room while he was home.

Cleaning (or lack thereof): now before Toby moved in, he asked how clean we are. I told him just standard, not too over the top, cleanup your mess, keep it organized, keep it moving. I grew up as the first boy, raised by women in Maryland, I have a particular standard of clean that I can maintain for myself and from my previous roommate, realized no one else had that sense. I don’t eat starches or sugary carbs, so that eliminates a lot of foods that one would keep in the house such as grains and most shelf-stables carbs. I occupy one of three levels of the refrigerator and barely use the freezer with my meal preps, which I do weekly on Sunday. Immediately after I clean my dishes and wipe down the kitchen and maintain doing any dishes I accumulate on Wednesday and Friday of the week. Not too crazy, just enough to keep the house looking decent. Now he (who pays less in rent than both I and our female roommate, is here the most & the one I can source most billing increases to) has this philosophy that if it is not his mess, he is not going to clean it. Fair! This goes as far as I having a fork in the sink, hearing him cook and clean his dishes (a good percent that were mine & here when he moved in) and that fork still just sitting in the sink. And then looking over at his wet dishes on top of the dishes that are cleaned and dry since the day before because he didn’t want to put anything up and occasionally, it’ll all start to develop an odor from him just piling wet dishes on top of dry ones and starting that process over again. But that is all slightly what the fuck ever to this next one. On the first day of both of them having been moved in, we discussed who would clean what areas and what that cleaning process should involve as well as how often to clean, they both picked their areas and agreed on the cleanliness and operations of common areas at which point TOBY pointed out that making a mess in the kitchen or bathroom should not be left for the cleaning person but to whoever created the mess. We all agreed, I had it typed out and not only emailed it to them, texted them reminders throughout the month of things we agreed upon. You look at this past weekend, right before Christmas and my boyfriend and I are alone in the house, cleaning everything from top to bottom because I could not stand waiting, and hinting and all the shit anymore of expecting grown ass adults to be responsible. So we cleaned and we scrubbed, and you know what we found? A bunch of hot sauce stains, seasoning, rice and oatmeal everywhere in the kitchen. Not to mention, this is the second mass cleaning I’ve had to do for my sanity and the first time I found puke next to the toilet, on the floor that belonged to one of his pledge brothers that I publicly detest. Separate store of how he didn’t even say anything about it when I brought it up or even clean it, sat for a good week before I cleaned. But I digress, we clean up, can pretty much put everything on each of them of where certain messes come from. Quick digression, our female roommate tends to leave her hair in the drain on the occasion that she showers here in which case it is very easy to just grab something, wipe it up, throw it in the trash and shower. He gets the big clumps out of the drain and sits it on the ledge of the tub so that it doesn’t clog the drain and then never touches it again. I don’t even want to go through half of the heart ache of describing what we found while cleaning anymore.

That is all and thank you for reading if you made it all the way through. I have a plan to talk to him about most of it but I wanted to do it while they were together but she’s not back for 2 weeks, he just came back this morning & quite frankly, I can’t wait that long for people to grow up. Hope it goes well.

Tl/dr: my roommate is frugal, sloppy and annoying and I cannot picture living with him under these conditions for the next 8 months.

Here's all of the little petty things I do to get back at my helpless, obnoxious, oblivious roommate badroommates

One of my roommates has done many, many things over the past year to annoy me and the other girls. She'll do something, I'll tell her not to and explain why, and she continues to do it. Since I'm stuck with her I've decided to do very, very petty things to get back at her.

This has forced me to be creative because if she knows it's me she tattles on me to the landlord, instead of just talking to me like I've done with her. I've needed to figure out things to do that i can't take blame for. Little things that will annoy her like how she has annoyed me.

I've unscrewed the shower head and hose enough to make it leak but not enough to disconnect completely. I've unscrewed the bathroom lightbulb enough for it to not turn on but not enough for it to fall out. I know she's the one to fall into this trap because she's the first to wake in the morning. This was successful because this morning her lamp was in the bathroom and the mop was in there too.

I move her milk into the door of the refrigerator so it goes bad a little more quickly.

When i leave in the morning I reset the wifi router so that she or someone else (because though she's been told how to many times she still "can't"). To reconnect you need to physically connect your laptop to the router, sign into some weird site, and reset the router to default settings. It's a very short but annoying process.

Usually when she cooks she ends up burning something. "I'm just giving it a little color!" she says as the smoke alarm is going off. I've bought two other smoke alarms and put them into really annoying and inconvenient spots in the kitchen. When she burns her bacon or her toast she has to get a chair, get on the counter, and turn all of them off. How she hasn't learned to not burn food in order to prevent the alarms from going off I don't understand.

I've slowly hid my silverware and plates. She rarely washes her dishes, and most of the dishes are mine, so I get ticked off when i see them sitting in the sink when i get home from work. I work 60 hours a week, she works 40, the other two work around 30, and so I'm pissed when I see the same dishes in the sink as yesterday.

I bought a new cooking pan set for myself and threw my old one away. My roommate was constantly told not to use metal utencils in the nonstick pans but would do it anyway. I could have given the set to my roommates, sure, but I decided to be wonderfully petty and throw it out instead. I hide my new pan set.

Sometimes I will slightly deflate one of her car tires. I can't just pop it because while I do want to annoy her I don't want to destroy her property. I've also put grease on her car door handle so she gets to have an oily hand first thing in the morning.

I decided to share my petty ideas in order to maybe inspire anyone to do the same to their oblivious, helpless roommates they're stuck with.

Crazy as balls badroommates

This morning my roomate has decided that we need groceries.

She also decided that I would be the one to get them.

I asked her to make the list before three as it would be hot out.

She gets it done around noon thirty and it is already hot out and says that I could wait until later this evening to get it.

2:40 Fit about how she needs real food in which a. I offer to make her something and b. rant about real balanced food and homework and finals. "None of (donnavan)s giant piles of meat".

Nope not the ground pork, the tomatoes, the canned vegetables, the peppers, the grunions, the bread, eggs, cheese, potato, onion oatmeal or pasta will do. Throwing and I need food crab fit. At least it's better than when our cupboards and refrigerator are ful and she wants me to buy another entire full load of groceries as I wonder where to put it.

Feel like I'm being manipulated, looking for an unbiased opinion/advice badroommates

this is a really long post

I've been living in a tiny apartment with three other people for about nine months and one of my roommates is moving out because another roommate here is hard to live with, I'll call her Mandy.

Mandy consistently keeps the sink full of dirty dishes, has her boyfriend over a lot with no warning and they sometimes cook huge meals late at night right outside of my room pretty often (I'm in college and this got really stressful during finals because at that point this was happening almost daily, she knew I was in finals week), and they'll leave huge messes, leave food out for days, fill the whole stove and counter with crap, claiming that she "pays rent so she can have anyone over whenever she wants and I need to just adapt to that when living with other people". Her boyfriend has denied ever making a mess. The thing is, she knows I have bad anxiety and don't like coming home to a bunch of noise and people right outside my door, and I pay rent too but she doesn't even think a heads up is necessary for company, she rolled her eyes at that suggestion.

I'm at my limit now because with a room opening up, we discussed making a craigslist post together to find a new roommate but she guaranteed the room to her coworker before I could even meet her, then said "I did all this work on my own to find someone" weeks after ignoring my text asking to put up a listing together, which I know she saw the same day I sent it. It wasn't hard work to invite a coworker to move in, and she refuses to hear me when I remind her that I tried to help find someone, it feels like she went behind my back. She kept saying "you did meet her though" but it was after she was planning on moving in... which Mandy fails to recognize.

Now I'm finding out that this new person will be having her boyfriend (who plays guitar and is planning on doing it here) over three or four nights a week, Mandy only emphasizes "three" because it's "only less than half the week". We have one small bathroom, a small dining room right when you walk in (no living room) and noise travels so easily because of how compact the apartment is. Mandy talked to me like I was a five year old saying "she pays rent so she can do what she wants, when you're living with people you need to expect that they'll have guests" which is true but I don't want another roommate almost half the time plus Mandy's boyfriend. We don't have the space and I prefer a quieter atmosphere, which she knows.

Before I moved in, Mandy did the same thing where she refused to compromise and offered the room to a coworker that another current roommate wasn't comfortable with. The only reason I got the room is because that coworker backed out last minute.

I know that Mandy and the new roommate coming in, I'll call her sam, wake up around 6:30 every morning and sam is incredibly talkative and has a loud voice, I told Mandy I was anxious about them waking me up with loud conversations on the weekend and she rolled her eyes and told me that she needs to get up and cook before work, ignoring my concern entirely.

Meanwhile, Mandy doesn't want anyone to flush the toilet at night because the sound bothers her (but she rolled her eyes and scoffed when I said it bothers me when people slam doors in here) and she keeps the motion light off outside because the light slightly comes through her window and bothers her so we have to come home in the dark. 80% of the refrigerator is full of her things, she regularly eats and drinks other people's things because she "thinks they were hers," at any given time she's taking up two out of four burners on the stove, and our only common area room is completely full of her plants, bottles, recycling, small furniture she puts her things on; she takes every last space for herself including kitchen storage. If you took all of her things out it would be completely empty except for a few pairs of shoes. She has 3 out of 5 shelves full of bottles in the bathroom

I wake up at least four mornings per week to the sound of loud clanging dishes and the scraping of her cast iron pan because the sink and stove are feet from my room and I rarely say anything about it, she knows it wakes me up and bothers me but she doesn't usually try to be quiet. The only things I ask for are common courtesy about noise at night and in the morning so I can sleep (about 10 pm on weeknights to 8 am weekdays, maybe 10 on weekends) and earlier today she tried making me feel guilty saying "we all have to adapt to you".

I really wanted to find a roommate who would be a good fit but I got no say in it. When I try telling her how I feel and she turns the conversation around and around, telling me "I pay rent so you have to adapt" and when I tell her she ignores my feelings she says that she doesn't, which in itself IS ignoring/invalidating my feelings. I'm trying really hard to set up boundaries and be more assertive but when I talk to Mandy she talks down to me and just tells me to "get over it" pretty much, but continues to pester me about talking things through which I really can't mentally do anymore at this point, because she doesn't listen and invalidates everything I saw. I adapt a lot already but Mandy's boyfriend plays guitar too, and I'll lose my mind if the two boyfriends are constantly here playing guitar because I know I'll hear it in my room. Even before I moved in, there was an agreement in place that this would be a quiet house since it's so small and you can hear things from every other room in your room, so this really sucks for me but I'll probably end up moving out which sucks because the rent is cheap and it's close to my college.

So, maybe manipulated isn't the best word to use, but I feel stepped on and taken advantage of. My roommate who is leaving and her mom (knows all the details and is helping her move out) think Mandy is manipulative so I don't think it's all in my head. Are these all things that I should just "adapt to?" It feels very one sided to me. Thank you for reading it all!

unhygienic roommate badroommates

I've lived with two other girls and a boy in a house during the last semester, we had no problem at all. However the boy moved out and a new girl moved in.

Leaving all the part about her personality aside, since some day the corridor has began to stink. We called the landlord and he talked to her, but she didn't let him enter into the room. I have no idea what's going on there, she might even have a dead cat in there , even if I think she have rotten food there. From the street I can see that she never opens the window, so It surely doesn't help.

I've seen her cooking once in two months and every time she goes to the kitchen is to take nachos and then she moves back to her room. I looked in her cupboard and she just has nachos, fanta cans, beer cans and some chili sauce. What baffles me is that she happens to have some regular food in the refrigerator, but it rots there until one of us dumps it.

She obviously never cleans the house when scheduled unless someone reminds it to her.

On the top of this, my other roommates have noticed that she's stealing our laundry soap, their shower gel and some food. When questioned about the missing stuff, she denied it.

We've talked to her a lot of time and she doesn't seem to understand or she doesn't want to understand (she's foreigner like me here and she doesn't speak very well). I'm thinking about calling her parents now.

I Can't Even Walk Into The Kitchen Without Feeling Anxious badroommates

Ranty, so it's pretty jumbled, but boy am I DONE. I have these roommates that hogs all the space to themselves. I live with 3 other girls, and two of them are usually there while the other one never shows up.

My grievances mostly involved the kitchen space, especially the refrigerator. Two of the three roommates would take up the whole space while my stuff would get pushed aside to the crispers. They'd leave dirty dishes in the sink for days before stuffing them into the dishwasher. The stovetop is always dirty because they'd fry chicken tenders at 11 pm at night. And for some reason, the toaster is broken.

Unrelated, but one day, I found two rather angry-sounding notes from one of my roommates stuck to my door complaining how I made the temperature too hot (when I changed it to 70 degrees back in February...they had it to 60...) Yeah, I found them on my way out to class and when I came back, they got taken down. Ok, it was my bad that I didn't ask Of course, no one apologized.

And because I want mostly nothing to do with them, I try my best to not show signs that I existed.

Just now, I came back from town because I had a Spring break and found a bag of my expired bread in front of my door...

Roommates and food badroommates

So I've been away from the space I had been sharing with "roommates." Before spending time away and due to the fact that one of them had "accidentally" eaten some of it, I wrote in Sharpie on my ONLY item of food: "[My name]'s food. Please, do not eat." Recently, I found the food item practically empty in the cupboard. They have piles of food in the refrigerator and kitchen, so there's no reason to mooch of the only item I have (more like "had").

Is this normal? I can't tell if these "roommates" are actually complete jerks.

Could use some advice on how to handle my tyrannical roommate. badroommates

I moved into my current apartment in September. I live with 2 roommates, I'll call them M and A, M is a male and A is a female (I'm male). A and I have not seen eye to eye on many things since I first moved in. We got into a small argument the first week that I moved in and she expressed the opinion that because she and M lived here before me, the apartment is "their home" and I basically just live here. I've tried to explain that we all signed the same lease, and that we are all co-tenants, which legally entitles me to an equal share of the apartment, but she claims that it's "our home in a different way than it is your home, and you need to respect that".

After a rocky start when I first moved in, things have been mostly calm. I'm pretty easy-going, and in an effort to placate A, I've made a lot of accommodations to try to make my footprint here as small as possible. They refuse to use the dishwasher because they believe it conserves water to wash dishes by hand (with the faucet running), which I've agreed to do. They do not use the furnace, and this is something I'll be returning to because it's the source of my most recent conflict with A. Additionally, I have less cupboard space in the kitchen than either A or M, I have only one shelf of the refrigerator while they get the rest of it, I have no space in any of the shared closets, I spend virtually no time in the common areas (I've not used their TV once since I moved in), and because A has 2 cats, she keeps her bedroom door open 24/7, so I also make an extreme effort to be as quiet as possible because our rooms share a wall. On top of this, the common areas and kitchen are filled with M and A's possessions, and they use the kitchen table as additional counter space (which I do not get to use) and to feed the cats which means that I would have to wash the table to eat on it. Writing this all out makes it seem like a large list, but on the whole I was pretty happy with our dynamic as I'm fine spending my time in my room while I'm home.

Two days ago I approached A with a problem I was having. Since I returned to the apartment following my winter break from school, I've noticed that A leaves our front door open whenever she leaves the house so that her cats have some entertainment while she's away. She even bought bird seed which she lays out in front of the door to attract birds to keep the cats happy. Just to clarify, we have a "screen" door which is like a metal grate, so safety isn't a concern. My problem is that it is the middle of January, and I'm constantly cold while I'm home because of the door being left open. When I approached A about closing the door more often, we came to a compromise. I'm pretty careful with my words, and I remember agreeing to leave the door open until 4p.m., unless I was too cold or if the weather required that it be closed. She thinks that the agreement was unequivocally 4 p.m., and yesterday at around 12p.m. I closed our front door because I was feeling cold after it was left open at 9:30am. At around 7pm A came home and knocked on my door, she began yelling at me about breaking the agreement we had, and in the process of her temper tantrum she called me entitled, rude and said that I was acting like a brat who wants things his way all the time. I was pretty astounded by what I was hearing, and I tried to say that she did not have a right to be talking to me like that, but she rolled her eyes, scoffed and interrupted me when I tried to speak to her. She likes to claim that I refuse to see things from her point of view, but when I said that she hasn't even begun to try to listen to what I have to say (because she interrupts me) she said something along the lines of, "I thought you said a lot of sentences". I stayed calm the whole time, and after her tirade she said, "I don't even have the energy to deal with this right now because I have 2 papers to write" and she left to go write her papers. A couple minutes later I knocked on her door and calmly asked if we could find some time over the weekend to sit down and talk this through, and again she rolled her eyes and said, "I don't even know when I'll have the energy to deal with this" and so I left her alone, and went to spend the night at my girlfriend's house.

Today, I'm livid. I feel incredibly disrespected by her, and I can't believe she had the audacity to call me a brat while she was standing in my room, raising her voice and calling me names. She reiterated her opinion that this is her home not mine, and when I tried to explain that I closed the door because it was exceptionally cold, she scoffed and rolled her eyes. When I pointed out that she misunderstood or misheard our agreement, she scoffed and rolled her eyes. This isn't the first time she's gotten angry at me after mishearing or misinterpreting something I've said, and it's so frustrating because she talks over me and then acts like I'm the one who refuses to meet her halfway. I tried to suggest that we write down an agreement to avoid any ambiguity, and again she just scoffed. When I went to ask her if we could find a time to talk, she criticized me for being antagonistic because I can "explain things very calmly, and not everyone can do that".

Well I looked up the weather over the last month in our city, and it turns out that the night before I closed the door was not only the coldest night we've had (37 degrees fahrenheit in southern california) since I came back from my break, it was the coldest night we've had during the entire month of January. Another concern that I tried to raise is that every morning there's condensation covering the interior of our windows, and when I get up the interior of my coffee cup is wet to the touch. Since I'm equally liable for this apartment, I'm worried that we will develop mold or other internal problems from the excessive moisture, and again when I raised this concern she literally just scoffed and said "that's not going to happen". When I brought up that she left our door open during a major storm, she actually looked at me and said "I didn't know it was going to rain, I can't predict the weather". We literally got amber alerts warning us about flash floods, and she's pretending that she didn't know we were in the middle of a storm?

Where do I go from here? I printed out the weather data, our lease, a list of my rights as a co-tenant, and a couple internet articles that explain the risk of mold from excessive moisture in the house. I would really like to take the gloves off and explain to her that she has no right to bully me around, and that I have no obligation to make any more accommodations to her. But I'm not hopeful that fighting fire with fire is going to work out in my favor. Any advice would be appreciated because A is making me miserable.

TL;DR - Roommate flipped her shit because I closed the front door when I was cold.

She's a slob, but she pays her bills... badroommates

Sorry for such a long post here, but I'm really in need for a vent-sesh. I want to start out by saying I'm new to Reddit, I never post, but mostly just read. After reading a lot of these r/badroommates posts, I feel the need to submit my own.

So here's the dealio. I moved into a condo in April of 2016 with a girl I barely knew, but was very short on options and couldn't afford the place myself. My uncle owns the condo, and agreed to rent it to me for a decent price ($800, two bed, two full bath, no water bill, etc.) My roommate is very much aware that he is cutting us a deal because I am his niece, when he could charge us what he charges other tenants (he owns about 30 units near the college campus in town.) The roommate thought it was a steal, and moved in. Let's call her Amy. Amy is 28, works for a big ass bank answering phones and assisting people with their accounts. She makes slightly less than I do, and thank goodness because my last two roommates were NEVER able to pay their bills. Amy has two cats. Let's call one "Fatty" and one "Asshole." Asshole is... well... an asshole. The epitome of an asshole cat. Fatty is fine except for the fact that he has severe garbage breath and what I assume is IBS (this is relevant, I promise). Our condo is a two story with a finished basement, with a full bath down there too. Part of the basement is unfinished, I call it the "utility room," where the washer and dryer are, as well as the cat's litter boxes. Amy and I both agreed upon her moving in that the litter boxes needed to be in the utility room due to that being the only place that was not A) carpeted, B) the kitchen, and C) right under our noses.

I have a dog, he is a 4 year old black lab, and the most docile baby ever. He never harms the cats, never gets in the litter box, never barks, and never has accidents. In the year that I've had him, he had ONE indoor accident due to him being sick. Keep the pet-related bodily fluids in mind here.

So after the initial agreement of shared chores, her saying she "empties the litter boxes daily and changes the litter completely each month" as well as a 50/50 split in rent, electric and internet, I figured she would be a decent roommate. We both made some sacrifices... She is really into keeping the environment clean (kudos to her) and asked that we have a recycling bin. Now, the complex does not have recycling, only communal dumpsters. So, in order for us to recycle, one of us needs to physically drive the recycling bin to a location that accepts recyclables. That means loading it into the car and making a 10 minute commute. I agreed that we could recycle, given that she shares the responsibility of ACTUALLY RECYCLING THE STUFF.

Boy, was that a stupid idea on my part. We have lived here 9 months and she has only taken the recycling TWICE. On top of that, she has NEVER taken the trash out. I'm pretty sure she doesn't even know where the dumpster is. Each day, I am taking the trash out by myself, and have recently said f*ck it with the recycling, and I just dump that into the dumpster too.

On to the cats. She absolutely, positively NEVER empties their litter box. I have to frequently ask her to please empty it, as Asshole has started to find other places to urinate. Shit hit the fan in November when it got so bad and foul smelling in our basement that I had a complete meltdown. The Asshole cat decided to use a corner of the basement next to my entertainment center to relieve himself. Again, and again, and again. And all Amy did was spray some "eco-friendly" cat urine repellent over it and walk away. The carpet padding was soaked in a 4 sq. ft. area. I asked her several times to please CLEAN the carpet, as Asshole keeps returning to the same spot, as well as CLEAN THE LITTER BOXES. She kept spraying the repellent on it, which obviously did nothing. So there I was, 10 pm one night, on my hands and knees, scrubbing and vacuuming and crying my eyes out (from anger, as well as the burning ammonia from the piss) for THREE hours. And obviously, it did nothing. I purchased my own carpet shampooer, (not a bad idea considering my dog could possibly have another accident - it seems stupid that a home with 3 pets didn't have one in the first place,) but it wasn't powerful enough to remove the weeks' worth of urine from the padding underneath. I finally called my uncle/landlord, crying, asking if I could use his industrial shampooer. He obliged, thank God.

Three days. That's how long it took. Three fcking days to shampoo that small area to the point where the cat stopped pissing on it and it no longer smelled like a litter box. And the worst part? Whilst shampooing, Amy had the fcking nerve to come down and ask me to TURN OFF THE SHAMPOOER because it was TOO LOUD. Are you fcking kidding me?! She not only refused to so much as even OFFER to help, but she asked me to STOP! She didn't reimburse me for the urine removing chemicals (not cheap, I might add), and also didn't care that the frequent pissing on my entertainment center caused me to have to throw it away (imagine particle board submerged in pee).

On top of all of this, she NEVER cleans up after herself in the kitchen. I swear she must feel like she's got her own cooking show, because she likes to create these very odd and very foul smelling dishes late at night, then leave the kitchen a mess. Food smeared on the counter, dishes piled high, fruit flies buzzing around. Then she retreats to her FCKING SPOTLESS AND PRISTINE bedroom for the night. She yells at my dog (he can whine a lot sometimes - he's pretty vocal, he lies to "talk." Never barks, but snorts and moans and yips when he wants attention or while playing.)

Amy locks herself in the bathroom for 2 hours every morning, not even letting me in to get my toothbrush, never buys trash bags or toilet paper, and lets food go bad (there are some pretty impressive science experiments growing in the refrigerator).

I have frequently asked her to please keep her messes cleaned up, and even pointed out that while I am sound like a neat freak, I'm not. I have my messes, but I keep them in my room and out of the communal areas. However, my "messes" are not filth. I dont wallow around in animal piss, pet hair or dirty dishes (I just have overflowing CLEAN laundry baskets and tend to drop my towel or coat in my room).

She never mops the kitchen floor, never sweeps, yet got angry at me for sprinkling baking soda on the carpet to absorb odors and not immediately sweeping it up. Um, that's not how it works? You have to let it sit for at least 30 minutes! Ever since the cat piss on the carpet tragedy, I am paranoid about the smell of the house. I am always apprehensive about having guests over, because it's embarrassing when you can smell the litter box as soon as you walk in the door. To combat any odors (my friends have assured me they don't smell anything anymore), I have scentsy warmers and glade plug-ins installed in damn near every outlet I can find. But guess what Amy does? She goes around each day and UNPLUGS THEM! I have asked her repeatedly to not unplug my plug-ins or turn off my warmers, as I am afraid the house smells. She mentions something about not wanting the electric bill to raise, yet she just purchased a space heater for her bedroom that I have to pay for.

Additionally, my biggest pet peeve here... We don't have an automatic ice machine in our freezer, so we use the ice trays. Amy will empty the ice tray and then refuse to refill it.

One last thing and then I promise I'm done. Amy is a lesbian (awesome, I fully support all those LGBTQ etc. rights!) and is in a new, but long distance relationship with a girl who lives 6 hours away. For NYE, said girlfriend came to visit Amy for the first time. On Friday, the day before NYE, Amy took the day off work to, get this, CLEAN. She did a great job, by the way, the house has never looked so spotless. Well while I was at work, she broke out the brooms and mops and bleach and even scrubbed the inside of the microwave (something I'm NOT good at doing). I was so glad when I came home to a clean house (despite the fact that the only time she has any consideration for cleanliness is when her fcking gf is coming over), but was immediately bombarded with "can you pick up your bag thats over on the chair?" and " _________ is on her way here I want the place clean." and "Can you take these out of here"? ----> They were clementines. I had a small box of clementines sitting on the kitchen table next to her large bag of apples and our communal bowl of garlic/shallots/onions.... and she fcking shoved them into my hands and asked me to take them upstairs to my room!

I looked her dead in the eye and forcefully set my clementines back on the table (we have always kept our fresh produce here) and walked away.

Needless to say, I can't wait for her lease to be up. Any ideas on how to get her to move out? What do you guys think? Is it better to have a clean and considerate roommate who often skimps on bills? Or an inconsiderate, dirtball of a roommate that pays her way?

HOW COULD I FORGET?!: She fcking takes horrendous dumps in the toilet and NEVER FLUSHES. I swear on everything holy that she does this. 3-4 times a week. I'm dying.

TL;DR: Roommate doesn't know where the dumpster is, doesn't empty litter boxes, and lets her Asshole of a cat piss on my carpet.

Me [22M] with my flatmate [28M], he's a light sleeper working night shift, complains to the apt. manager badroommates

I've been noticing some mild passive aggressiveness from one of my two flatmates over the last two months, and brought it up with him some time ago. He wasn't happy with how I often leave dishes dirty if I eat late in the evening/at night and delay cleaning them up until the next day. He also asked me to turn off the light in the common room after I'm done. I apologised, started cleaning the dishes immediately after cooking and turning off the light whenever I left the room.

However, the passive aggressiveness didn't stop and our apartment manager came in today and told me how she wasn't sure if me living in the apartment is working, and that if things don't improve she's gonna have to consider kicking me out. So what's the issue exactly? That I apparently regularly wake him up when he's sleeping.

Now, we live in NYC, I'm a student with a stacked schedule (often don't come home until 7-8pm) and he's the lightest sleeper in the world.

  • He wakes up if the light is on in the common area, as the light creeps below his door

  • He wakes up if I turn on the bathroom fan in the bathroom

  • He wakes up if I open/close the apartment door, or open/close the refrigerator door

  • He wakes up if I play sound from my laptop speakers (not exactly a boom box) in my room, with doors closed

  • He wakes up if I skype with friends

  • He wakes up if I use the microwave

  • He wakes up if I talk in my sleep

  • He wakes up if someone calls my phone

And so on.. How he even survives in Manhattan is beyond me, but either way. To make matters worse, he works the night shift and sleeps from 7:30pm-2:00am, so the entire bloody apartment has to be more dead than a morgue at midnight from 7:30 onwards, 7 days a week.

In his defense he is more than willing to compromise in other areas as he realises he's asking for a lot, but anything that wakes him up at "night" (read: 7:30pm) is a no go, and EVERYTHING wakes him up at night.

How do I deal with this? How do I avoid getting kicked out of the apartment?

I've sent him a long message apologising today, suggesting ways I can improve. I also asked him to communicate with the apartment manager if there's anything I didn't cover, so she can go through it with me in a way where he doesn't have to confront me, but I honestly won't be able to deal with his diva requests either way. I'm actually a human being and not a ghost. What do I do?

TL;DR: Flatmate wakes up if someone lets loose a fart at the ISS and he's complaining to our apartment manager about me disturbing him.

Roommate pounds on my door with non-emergencies badroommates

I've been annoyed with one of my three roommates for months, but this is the first time I've lost my temper with him. The situation is this:

He has accused me multiple times of not chipping in to do dishes. However, I've often done dishes that aren't mine. Sometimes I will leave a pot to soak in the sink overnight if I know the food is caked to the pot and soaking will make it easier to clean. Then in the morning I'll wash it--sometimes it won't still be there, as I think one of our roommates gets up early and does the dishes then for whatever reason. My bad, and I get how that may be annoying, but it's not as if I don't check on dishes, wash other people's, rewash other people's, or do my own when I use them (again, unless I'm soaking them). Past roommates have, if anything, said that I'm a neat freak and the cleanest person they've ever met. I personally think our apartment is a bit of a sty, but I've long given up on keeping it up to my standards and just try to do basic common chores.

Today I woke up from a nap to see a text from my roommate, telling me that other people need to use the sink and my "not washing dishes" was unacceptable. I was bewildered and angered by the text--not because I think I'm flaw-free, but because it felt wildly passive-aggressive. My boyfriend called shortly thereafter to talk about some stress he's been under with school; as I spoke with him I heard a light knock on the door. Thinking nothing of it, I continued my conversation--I don't feel obligated to open the door with any knock. I feel like that's a reasonable boundary. Then, ten minutes later, another light knock. Then, another ten minutes later, I heard someone POUNDING ON MY DOOR. Alarmed and thinking there might be some sort of emergency, I went to the door with the phone still in my hand, telling my boyfriend I needed to make sure everything was okay. All the roommate wanted was to ask if I'd gotten the text about the dishes, though at this point he had sent it only a few hours earlier. I told him (without yelling, at all) that I was on the phone and shut the door. I was irritated, but honestly I was so surprised that someone would pound on the door for something so inconsequential that I was more startled than anything else. Then I hear him fuming in the hallway: "No need to be so rude!" Wanting to nip conflict in the bud, I opened the door and briefly told him that I needed to continue my phone conversation, but if he wanted to speak with me about issues with the apartment, he could knock on my door later. I asked him (politely, in my opinion) to not send passive aggressive texts if he needed to talk about something. He then walked back and basically started grilling me about the issue while I was still on the phone, so that I had to hang up on my boyfriend (after apologizing to him) and felt forced into a conversation. It turned out that the pot he was accusing me of not washing wasn't even mine! But according to him, the other roommates (who I never speak to and haven't for the two years I've lived here, simply because they're never here) are angry with me as well and said it wasn't their pot. I will say to you reddit: It's not my pot! Because I did use it and I specifically remember washing it, setting it on a pot holder to dry, washing my face, and going to bed. At this point, he in essence called me a liar and said they've never had issues until I moved in. All I can say is that maybe someone is blaming their negligence on me or misremembering what they used. I have such a distinct memory of washing it and know I'm right in this one case.

A lot of word salad. But here's how I feel: On one level, I think everyone should keep an eye on dishes in an apartment with four people and few dishes. I don't mind doing that. What I do mind is:

  1. Being painted as the sole problem in the apartment. This isn't the first time something like this has happened. I was also blamed for the fridge being full, even though I clear it out--throwing out things that aren't even mine but have mold on them--about once a week. At the time I was blamed for this, I had also been the only one in the apartment for a week--if anyone had left food in the refrigerator before vacation, why would it be me? I had been there and had been frustrated that it had been so full. The point being: Why me? Because I'm the newest roommate, even though I've been there two years without problems until this year?

  2. My roommate feeling like he can pound on my door and demand a conversation about something so inconsequential at any time he wants. He also regularly traps me in conversations in the hallway when I'm trying to use the bathroom or get a drink, even if I indicate multiple times I'm busy or want to leave or do something. To me, pounding on my door like one would do in an emergency is a huge violation of my boundaries--over DISHES.

When I say I've had other problems with this roommate, they're basically the above: blaming me for everything, playing loud music and then passive aggressively insisting "I must just have good ears" when I mention it, terrible B.O., trapping me in conversations, insulting the region I'm from (the American South) constantly, and filling the hallways with weed smoke (I don't mind smokers, but he has a fire escape he could easily blow it out on).

I just want to get along until I can eventually move out. What should I do?

My landlord [45 F] got highly offended after I [24 M] gave her a written contract after I was asked to leave the house. Did I do the right thing? badroommates

So long story short:

I have found a room on Craigslist about a year and a half ago and I have been living with a mom (my landlord), her son, and 3 other roommates. The landlord subleases the rooms in her townhome so that she can afford the mortgage. The landlord and I have not had any issues for the majority of the time I have been living there.

About 6 months ago, the landlord had a friend [40 F] who needed a place to stay because she was going through a breakup with her boyfriend. Her friend was not hard to live with at all. Two months ago, her friend asked if her son [21 M] could live in the house with us temporarily. The son was not a problem first, but then after a month of living here, we saw his true colors. So in a nutshell, he has a criminal record, has a warrant for his arrest, refuses to work or go to school, he leeches off of people, takes people's food in the refrigerator, is loud and inconsiderate, and is an overall deadbeat. I addressed my problems with the landlord and she agreed that he was causing problems. About a week ago, I had a huge verbal fight with him and I told the landlord that I wish to move out in a month.

Recently I had another roommate in the house tell me that the landlord's friend and her son does and did not pay rent here and was too nice to kick them. This is not fair for a paying tenant such as myself to put up with them. The landlord is mad at me because she will be losing money because I am deciding to move. She sent a group text on Sunday saying that I, her friend, and her son have two weeks to move out of the house.

According to my state's law, I legally have 30 days to move out. I typed a contract and used a "month to month tenant to landlord termination agreement template" I downloaded from a legal website. I pretty much wrote out that I have one month to move and that I will be trying to find a place to move out before the month. I typed out that I will pay her weekly (my usually rent divided by 4 weeks) and that she and I needed to sign it so that I won't come home one day with my stuff on the side of the curb or a sheriff escorting me out of the property. Unfortunately when I moved in, we did not have a tenant-landlord rental agreement, it was all cash and verbal agreements.

So she read her email this morning with the contract attached and she got really offended. I did not think she will be offended because it was just something for me to make sure that the sheriff doesn't come and evict me in two weeks. She agreed that I can stay in the house up until 30 days but she doesn't want my money, so pretty much I can be living here free for 30 days. I have no idea why she doesn't want my money given her current financial situation. I think she was offended because I have been giving her cash every month with only verbal agreements. She said that she doesn't trust me anymore and can't wait until I am out of her house. She said that the contract made her look like she is untrustworthy, which I did not intend it to be.

Anyway, who is right in this situation? Did I come across as really rude? Was the contract necessary? I am curious as to why she doesn't want my money anymore? Why is she getting offended by a simple contract that was built from a template on a legal website? Thoughts and opinions? This turned out better for me, but now I feel really uncomfortable living here.

TL;DR - My landlord told me to leave the house in two weeks, as a paying tenant I legally have 30 days to vacate the premises. I wrote a contract to her and she got really offended and saw it as an offensive rude gesture. Who is right here?

First Harassment Restraining Order motion to dismiss hearing. Redneck roommate/landlord thinks he's won. badroommates

Here's the text (keep in mind the only way to avoid recieving a evictions summons was to give the redneck landlord the name of the property management company I will be renting from next. They own 6 buildings, its easy enough to figure out where I will be living if he knows the company):

I cannot sign a lease until the city/state inspectors certify the apartment. (3) People

Mr, Redneck and Father of Redneck(s)

Your son (redneck) is using the threat of eviction to find out where I will be living next. I am not about to tell your son where I will be living, he needs to mind his own business and I don't want to see your son any where near my next place of residence.

I cannot legally sign a lease until the apartment(s) has been recertified and it takes the city/state awhile to look at these apartments twice. Nor do I want to give your son a timeline in which he can plan what else next he's going to do to harass me.

He needs to stop threatening me and communicating with me. I will leave his house. I won't pay an extra months rent to cover the cost of utilities that the last tenants skank trash girlfriend and DANCOtenant ran up.

I also had court today in regards to the HRO against skank trash girlfriend and we can to an agreement in mediation. skank trash girlfriend also made a clause in the agreement to be allowed to show up in court for further legal action over what occurred at your son's residence.

Signed,

CC fatherofredneck@shouldhavegotavasectomy.com,

That also proves one of my arguments that DANCOtenant and skank trash girlfriend remain in contact with you after they moved out and are pushing you to further harassment, break the law which will result in treble charges and are actively seeking to continue to cause me strife.

I did settle in mediation (yet the terms of mediation are the same as the HRO) which also proves that I am willing to resolve issues and not further escalate the issue to trial. Yet the HRO arguments were not quashed.

Mr. Father of Redneck,

I told you the former tenants were pushing your son to continue to harass me. Your son asked me to leave because I requested the police reports from the DANCO, the police called skank trash girlfriend to inform her I had the request to request and receive the police reports.

Just go away Redneck. Leave me alone.

Signed,

Me

So I didn't prove explicitly my arguments for filing and obtaining a HRO, but the arguments were dismissed without prejudice in exchange for a binding agreement. The skank trash girlfriend harasses me, I call the cops. I harass her, she calls the cops

I am getting gopro cameras for cycling, if I don't catch her on camera means I wasn't looking for her, but if she sees me and wants to call the cops on me then its pretty obvious she saw me cause she wants to see me.

The entire mediation convo was another showcase of how extremely delusional she is. She was incredibly shocked that I knew that the DANCOtenant's daughter's mother had partial custody and paid child support to the father. That really put her on edge. Because I was told the mother of the child signed away her parental rights, didn't have contact and is somewhere doing drugs. The reality is the mother gave birth to the child when she was 17 years old (the father DANCOtenant was 21 years old) had custody for 3.5 years, and finished a 4 year university degree, got married and now is a stay at home mom to a toddler. Not what either the DANCOtenant nor her girlfriend claimed was the situation.

My god what a trash bucket circus this morning was. How did I survive 5 months in the same house with these people?

edit: I did email the redneck and his father a photo image of the deposit reciept with the address and property management company name blocked out. The new roommate has asked me twice when the redneck landlord is home what neighborhood I was looking at to rent in or the buildings I applied at, what neigbhorhoods are those. Promptly the redneck landlord comes up stairs to the kitchen (where we were) and glares at me stomps away after picking nothing out of the refrigerator. Seriously do these two think they can entice me into telling them where I will live next? I don't think so.

The most passive aggressive roommates badroommates

So literally 3 weeks ago my roommates, a couple, moved in. Roommate A arrived before his boyfriend, who will be called Roommate B. This is my first actual apartment by myself (not a dorm or family), so I've never had to deal with a couple before, or anything else that comes along with legitimately renting a place. Suffice it to say, from the moment Roommate A moved in, he has been a complete nightmare.

He didn't even say hi, or introduce himself, he walked in, put his stuff down and immediately left. I later found out by looking at my email that he found the living conditions of the house to be "filthy." I do not know how to properly describe that the house was dusty, there was no furniture as my old roommate owned everything and I hadn't gotten around to buying more, and everything else I had literally just cleaned or swept the day before. The landlord pretty much told him to get over it, as it's stated in the lease he was coming into an as-is apartment and taking over a lease, not signing a new one.

Roommate B isn't even supposed to be here. It states in the lease that only 2 people are supposed to occupy our part of house and if anyone is found to be more than a casual guest (staying for more than 3 days) they are to pay a fee of $10/day. I told him I didn't care if it was a couple, but told him about this part of the lease, and he saw it when he signed as well. I even told my landlord a few days after they started the application process that he was moving his boyfriend in because I was having second thoughts about living with a couple and their attitude was pretty blah when we FaceTime'd and I showed them the house and the fact they had no real plans for a job or money or school or anything like that really sketched me out. My landlord told me I couldn't deny someone because they sketched me out and when I brought up the fact he was moving his boyfriend in and it was against the lease, he shut up. I looked for another roommate and found one, but things fell through and when Landlord asked me what the status was after Roommate A had emailed him I told him I was fine with him moving in if it was just him. Landlord asked Roommate A if he was planning on moving his boyfriend in, and Roommate A told him no - so we went through with everything.

Before he moved in I asked him for the deposit, to which we agreed he would pay me half before and half after. It's been 3 weeks since they both moved in and neither of them have showed any signs of paying the rest of the deposit because they quote "cannot justify paying it when the landlord doesn't seem to do anything or take care of anything and we shouldn't be paying it to you because you still live here." Ok then.

Throughout the 3 weeks (I am still absolutely blown away it literally hasn't even been a month) that they've lived here they have passive aggressively been trying to move me out of my own house and are the most inconsiderate and rude people I've ever met. They've taken up all the space in the refrigerator, we have an older tub/shower with some pipes in the way and they are constantly moving the shower hooks to go AROUND the pipes no matter how much I move them back, they've had people over and been incredibly loud and obnoxious with them, which I don't care about, but when it's 3 am and the "living room" is actually just a little space in front of my door and I can hear EVERYTHING that happens, yeah, it's not really a living room and shouldn't be used like that. They also are constantly in the "living room" smoking pot and watching shit on extremely high volumes at all hours of the day and night. They've gone through literally everything from the kitchen to the bathroom, have moved everything everywhere to where THEY want it and to where THEY like it and don't even care or ask. They asked me one (1) time if they could move my hair stuff in the bathroom and if they could throw away all the old roommates food in the refrigerator. That's it. They've stolen my laundry detergent and lied to my face about it, they took my phone charger, and I've asked several times for them to not like the stairs door because the house is old and lock sticks and they still do it.

Last night I came home, the stairs door was locked, my key stuck and I was locked out for 5 minutes. The internet bill was due which I told him about 2 weeks ago and he just said "Oh ok" when I reminded him about that day and I had just had enough when he showed absolutely no sign of giving me his half. I changed the wifi password/name and when they stopped trying to reset it and went to bed I took the router into my room. This morning he knocked on my door and asked what happened and I just told him straight up, it's my router, it's my internet, it's under my name and I pay for it and if you two are going to act like you live here by yourselves and try to move me out I guess I just have a hard time justifying sharing with you. What ensued was a 20 minute blowout in which he told me they weren't being passive aggressive, they haven't done anything wrong, and they're not trying to move me out. And yet EVERY SINGLE person I tell this story to has echoed my thoughts on them being passive aggressive/trying to make me uncomfortable and move me out or says "well if they're not doing that then you just found two of the most inconsiderate people in the world."

And the thing is too that he used "Oh well you need to adjust to the living situation I've lived with more roommates than you" as some sort of justification or excuse. I've lived with people too, and honestly, there's just some fucking conversations you don't need or shouldn't have to have because it's common sense and common courtesy that maybe you should leave room for the other people in the house in the refrigerator or maybe you shouldn't be making so much noise in the living room or use headphones or turn the volume down or perhaps you should ask before you buy tacky artwork and fairy lights and pin them up everywhere and move other peoples stuff and just generally acting as if you and your boyfriend are the only ones in the house. The list goes on and on.

And maybe it'd be one thing if I hadn't tried talking to them about this stuff, but I have. I've mentioned the door sticking to Roommate B and was told this morning but Roommate A "well I didn't know. You didn't tell me." So you're telling me you and your boyfriend don't talk to each other? I have to have TWO conversations when I have an issue or want something to happen with the house? What fresh hell kind of bullshit is that.

And the thing is that yesterday I

  • told Landlord about Roommate B being here and the other countless lease violations they're committing because I asked if someone was to be evicted if everyone would be evicted (he told me yes?? But I read online that doesn't have to happen that way and I then asked if there was a difference between being evicted bc of rent vs someone violating the lease agreement)
  • met with a lawyer about this whole situation because I wanted to be sure I wouldn't be held responsible for their lease infractions and lose the roof over my head
  • have started looking at other houses to move into (hopefully by October)

So honestly, if they get kicked out or fined the $10/day, it doesn't matter to me. They can have fun paying that $1200 bill every month which is literally as much as a 1 bedroom is in our area so lol. Fuck them. I refuse to believe that they're just two of the most oblivious people in the world because what they're doing is so passive aggressive and purposefully inconsiderate there's no way SOMETHING in them hasn't been like "Ummmmmm maybe don't do that?"

And when we talked this morning he was like "Well you've been passive aggressive too you slam doors" etc etc like? Lol. It's a door, dude. And then he randomly brought up the fact that the application fee was $35 when I said it was $10. Like? Ok, if that was an issue for you, why'd you pay. How does that have anything to do with me and being passive aggressive? I am literally never here, I'm working or at school, so I'm sorry for wanting my house to be a nice and comfortable space for me when I am here?? I don't get it.

Annoying, dirty and weird. badroommates

So I currently live in a shared house with my best friend, a friend of his who I know quite well and then there is the friend of his we got stuck with.

This guy is the worst housemate to have. I have anxiety so anything out of the ordinary can be difficult for me time to time, however this guy no matter what keeps me on edge. From his shuffling around the house, to the weird noises he makes every time he opens a cupboard (Honestly he seems to act surprised every time he opens one, you would think something has jumped out at him.) or even just the random burping and swearing, he is not a good housemate.

Also in our house there is no smoking allowed, this apparently doesn't apply to him as he smokes in his room constantly, then he clearly hoovers (Vacuums) the ash as the hoover (vacuum) always smells of cigarettes after he has used it.

Finally he has a bad habit of leaving pots around and leaving food in our refrigerator until it goes off and WAY past its use by date. I have put up with him for a year almost now and held back but I had to vent somewhere.

TL;DR - Housemate who I don't really know, smokes in the house, leaves food until its gone off, constantly swears and burps.

The tinder roommate badroommates

I only roomed with him for 3 months. NOT MY DOING.

If you've seen my first post, you know my roommate was batshit crazy. But this takes the cake.

We had mentioned together previously that we wanted a third roommate in our next apartment so we could split the costs further saving more money. Smart right? Not.

So one day, while on tinder, looking for some sweet dong she came across this mildly okay looking guy. So she starts talking to him. They hit it off really well, conversation is flowing, all is good. Somehow she mentions that we're looking for a third roommate which gets him excited because he's also looking for a room

That night while I'm sleeping, he comes over and they basically become obsessed with one another. They were both bipolar. Both depressed. Both had been recently dumped by their exes. Both drank a lot. It was a party apparently.

That night she offers him to stay on our couch, as long as he split the rent. Cue him moving in.

NOTE: I only know this from speaking to her after the fact. She did not consult me. Did not ask if it's okay. She just did it.

So I come home one day and there's a dude half naked in boxers sleeping on my couch and his shit is all in boxes in the doorway. WTF

I confront her and she says I agreed to the third roommate thing. Wrong. I agreed to find a third roommate when we move into a bigger place so we can split bills evenly. Not have some bum on our couch.

Whatever. Moving on. He stays for three months. In that time he:

  1. Drank so much our carpet was covered in cans. Beer cans everywhere. And not even good shit. His car was worse. He drank and drove.

  2. Tried to get my cat put outside because he "hates cats and pays a third of the rent so he gets a say". No mother fucker you're not on the lease you don't.

  3. Destroyed the community toilet then refused to plunge it. So I had to.

  4. Tried to fix the toilet at 4am while on acid. Right. Next. To. My. Room. I appreciated the effort but not at 4 bloody am right outside my door.

  5. Lost his job. (He never showed up).

  6. Drove drunk. Got T-boned. Then lost his license AND car.

  7. Had a felony charge. (I learned this when discussing our new place and asked if he had any issues with being on a lease with us).

  8. Never showered. Man stank is real my friends.

I was working 3 jobs and going to school so most of the time I didn't really care enough to notice this dude needed to go.

The last straw came when he went into my room and stole my underwear from my laundry basket and started to try and sneak in my room at night.

I told my official roommate dude needed to gtfo now. She fought hard. Apparently the sex was great. And after I told her I'd break my lease she relented.

I had never seen a man throw a hissy fit until then. Left ALL his trash everywhere. Slammed doors. Broke our refrigerator (still don't know how) and took a shit on the carpet??????? It was way too big to be my cats.

Long OBVIOUS short story: don't get a roommate off a dating site. Especially tinder.

I'm looking at you old roommate. I'm looking at YOU.

Sorry for the rant. I needed to tell someone.

Split furniture badroommates

I moved in with these two girls a while back. We all met online with a roommate finder website, and we all found a place to stay and all chipped in for furniture we found. Dining table ($150), couch ($150), laundry washer/dryer (220), and refrigerator ($228). We all paid equally for everything except the fridge (due to miscommunication and a 3way street of forgetfulness!)

So me and roommate A paid $188 each for the furniture, and roommate B paid $316 for the furniture.

Well Roommate B is moving out next month and will be leaving behind the furniture. We bought the stuff 1.5-2 years ago. Everything in very good condition.

Now Roommate A and I are still staying in the apartment using the furniture for who knows how long. I plan to stay as long as I can, and roommate A plans to move out within the year.

So my question is this. Should Roommate B get (some) compensation back for what she pitched in for the furniture when we moved in?

I tried to explain the details unbiased as possible. I want to get people's genuine input because the situation has caused some disagreements. I'll tell more to the tale after seeing what people say!
