[Discussion] Any reviews for Neogen Code 9 Gold Black Caviar Essence & Gold Tox Tightening Pack Kit AsianBeauty

I've been interested in this product for a while. I've used it for 2 weeks now (5-days a week) and here are my thoughts:

Pros

  • Very hydrating
  • Gives a golden glow (has gold flakes, or something that looks like them)
  • Gently exfoliates
  • Possible replacement for sheetmasks? (as one reviewer points out) - probably not..

Cons

  • In terms of brightening, or tigetening or removal of wrinkles, I've not seen anything happen so far
  • The essence is really thick! After using it, my face is super sticky and any other serums or creams don't seem to absorb well
  • My face looks oily (I try using these in the morning)
  • Needs to be stored in a refrigerator
  • Time consuming. You need to take it out of the fridge, take a tweezer, take out a pad etc. They seem ultra picky about product contamination - which further bothers me

So, overall, it seems rather hyped to me!! Anyone here has used it? What are our thoughts?

[Discussion] OST C20 aka My Signature C Source fizzed and overflowed out of bottle like soda? AsianBeauty

I received my order today from Wishtrend of their My Signature C Source vitamin C serum. The package was laying on my doorstep when I arrived home around, 8pm. Note the high today was around 77 degrees. I proceeded to remove the bottle from the box and put in my refrigerator. A couple hours later I used the serum, first I shook it to mix the ingredients. While shaking I remember thinking to myself the serum sounds a lot more watery than before as I could hear it splashing around a lot in the bottle. I've been ordering this serum for quite some time and it's consistency has always been a little thick. After opening it, it started fizzing out like soda so some of the serum overflowed out of the bottle. That has never happened to be before with this serum or with any LAA serum I've used from other brands. The manufacture date stamped on the bottom was 2017.07.05.

Any ideas why this happened? I always shook the bottle before applying and this never happened. It was a new bottle and I shook it before opening, I'm no chemist but maybe there was some gas built up inside the bottle from heat build up during shipping perhaps and shaking it and opening it caused this reaction due to the gas and pressure? The serum being hotter than normal could explain the consistency as well.

I hope this doesn't happen tomorrow as I'd hate to lose more serum from it overflowing out. If it doesn't happen tomorrow, I'll assume my theory about gas and pressure build up.

BTW I emailed Wishtrend and they responded they don't recommended shaking it and there was no change in formula.

[Question] What are some alternatives for the konjac sponge? AsianBeauty

My house isn't the best place to store my konjac sponge (few windows, many roommates, bad ventilation) and I'm afraid it'll easily grow mold if it can't completely dry every time I use it. I've heard of the "place in a ziploc bag and keep in the refrigerator" method but it doesn't come off as sanitary to me. What are some equally affordable alternatives? I have normal to oily sensitive skin and I enjoy using my konjac sponge, but it might be too high maintenance for me.

Edit: Phrasing

[Review] Toners, Tretinoin and Tea AsianBeauty

General Info and Skin Type Mid-twenties, continental Europe. Dealing with hormonal acne (mostly CCs, sometimes cystic). My skin has calmed down a lot in the past three years, however, it’s sensitive and reacts almost immediately to anything it does not like. Always on the dryer side, my skin has been chronically dehydrated since I’ve started using tretinoin about 6 months ago. I get oily if I don’t moisturize properly. Been using actives for a total of 3 years, gradually progressing in strength and type.

Goals Evening out skin tone and texture, fading PIE/PIH, ridding myself of those last stubborn CCs. Have healthy looking skin with wrinkles in the right places as time goes on - smile lines are fine, frown lines are not ;-)

Patch testing method I patch test for 48 hours for allergic reactions, then I use the product on half my face for two weeks before evaluating if I should move on to a full faced test for another week or two. If I like it, the product stays. If I don’t, it goes on other parts of my body.

General approach to skin care Skin care for me is a ritual, I like taking my time. However, in the mornings, I get up so early that I tend to save my actives for my evening routine. I like products that feel luxurious, so texture, packaging and fragrance factor into my decision whether I want to keep a product or not. Bearing this in mind however - if something works, it works. I travel a lot, so I simplify my routine for days on the road and break it down to the basics plus maybe one product that I take along solely for the pleasure of application.

For ratings, I am using a scale aligned with Fiddy’s: 1/5 - This should be taken off the market. 2/5 - This product was actively bad for my skin but might work for someone else. 3/5 - Meh. Doesn’t hurt, doesn’t do anything special. 4/5 - Quite good, I am liking this product. 5/5 - I never want to replace this.

RP - Will repurchase. WNR - Will not repurchase. HG - Holy Grail.

Rosette Ceramide Lotion This was a more expensive type of water to me. Feels exactly like water, too. Did nothing, no difference. In the refrigerator and on my legs you go! (My legs are getting a lot of attention from not-so-succesful face products.) (3/5 - WNR)

Hada Labo Gokujyun Hyaluronic Acid Lotion This is slightly more viscous than the Rosette Ceramide Lotion. It applies well and pats in nicely. I did enjoy it for the plumpness it gave my skin when using it for the 3/7-skin-method, however, it is SO BORING. I kept forgetting to use it because I didn’t look forward to it at all. It just seemed like another step. I ditched it and - you guess! - yup, used it up on my legs. (3/5 - WNR)

Hada Labo Gokujyun Hyaluronic Acid Premium Lotion I think I just don’t like hydrating toners. It’s more viscous than the regular version, so I did not use it in multiple layers. However, again: I kept forgetting to use it. Also, after I while, I began getting a weird tingly feeling after application. I reproduced this on my hands and since it did feel like my skin is reacting to it in a bad way, it is now waiting in the refrigerator for use on my legs. I have Enprani Moistfull Booskin coming in the mail, let’s see how that one goes…(3/5 - WNR)

Non-AB

Thayer’s Alcohol-Free Rose Petal Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera Since I use low-pH cleansers, I don’t normally need a pH-adjusting toner. However, on those days I for some reason feel that I need one, this does the job very well. To me, it’s not drying at all, it smells like roses, it leaves a clean feeling on my face and Thayer’s confirmed the pH to be at around 5 (this was validated by a user in /r/skincareaddiction). It’s fairly cheep, comes in a huge bottle, lasts forever and does the job. It’s also very good at preventing razor burn in more sensitive regions and cleans up the residue some deodorants leave behind very nicely. It’s not very exciting though, so unfortunately, although it does everything it’s supposed to do, my heart can’t elevate it to Holy Grail status. (4/5 - RP)

Tretinoin 0.05% Yeah, well, what can I say. CCs suck and are hard to get rid of. Tretinoin does the job. I had been using various strengths of acids on my skin for a while and progressed through Retin-A and Differin to Tretinoin. Please be aware that most patients will experience some kind of side-effect such as dryness, increased sensitivity, redness, burning and flaking. I eased myself into it and was lucky to know the treatment my skin needs when acting up, but boy, did it hurt sometimes. I would not recommend to try retinol/retinoids unless you have somewhat of a routine that works for you (Moisturizer! Sunscreen!). Dial it down when you feel your skin is beginning to sensitize and go slow. Protect that moisture barrier. Also: Stick with it through the purging phase. Since I had mostly CCs, they had to come to a head eventually. They did, at the same time. My face was a wreck, but it’s better now than before and I love my tretinoin for it. (5/5 - HG)

Spearmint Tea This has been repeatedly described as beneficial for patients with androgenic hormone imbalances, as it seems to have anti-androgenic properties. My acne flared up when I went off (anti-androgenic) birth control, so my hormones were a rollercoaster. Since I’ve started drinking at least one cup a day, I have noticed a slow but progressive improvement with the cystic acne I had been suffering from - however, I doubt that I can attribute this singularly to the spearmint tea. Since it’s not hurting me and I enjoy tea in general, I’ve continued to drink it nevertheless. It’s an extra cup of fluids in my book every day and it has become part of my daily routine so much that I take tea packets with me wherever I go. If you haven’t yet, give it a try, there are a bunch of gals and guys that describe it as really making a difference for them in their skincare regimen. However, if you take medication, have any diseases related to the endocrine system or are unsure about what the effects on your hormone cycle might do to you: Please talk to a doctor first. (4/5 - RP)

[Review] Snails, Scinic, Sheet Masks (long) AsianBeauty

Doesn’t hurt, doesn’t do anything special. 4/5 - Quite good, I am liking this product. 5/5 - I never want to replace this.

RP - Will repurchase. WNR - Will not repurchase. HG - Holy Grail.

Benton Snail Bee Essence This comes as a clear watery gel in a pump bottle. Easy to dispense and feels nice and cooling upon application. The smell is…well, weird - for me, it smells like dirt. However, it does not linger and while I enjoy nice fragrances, I am fine with my skincare not smelling perfectly pleasant. As this seems to be a favorite of this sub, I was a little disappointed that it didn’t do anything for me. It felt like it never quite sunk into my skin and rather formed a watery layer that was being pushed around. This could not be resolved by using less. I did not notice any effect, neither moisturizing nor healing nor soothing. My skin did not miss it when I left it out of my routine. In the end, I repurposed it as a cooling gel for my legs in summertime: I stuck it in the fridge and just massaged my calves with it after long runs. (3/5 - WNR)

Mizon Snail Recovery Gel This is a fairly odorless gel that comes in a tube. I’ll cut to the chase, I did not like this. It was sticky, no matter how little I applied, I never felt comfortable wearing it and after one particular instant where I applied this to my face next to an open window out in the country and five minutes later, my face was yellow with pollen sticking to it, I just said goodbye. Used this up as a body moisturizer, didn’t hurt, didn’t do much. (3/5 - WNR)

cosrx Snail 96 Mucin Essence Snail does not seem to do anything for me. After ditching the Benton Snail Bee Essence, I switched to this. Again, this is a clear gel dispensed in a pump bottle. It goes on well, sinks in fairly quickly and has a neutral fragrance. However, I did not notice any benefit from it and again, my skin did not miss the snail when I dropped it out of my routine. Currently using it after shaving my legs, it seems to help with razor burn. (3/5 - WNR)

Scinic Honey All-in-one Ampoule This is a very runny gel-like ampoule in a very impractical container. The tub is huge and in this sub, you’ll mostly hear that users have decanted it into another container for easier and more hygienic access. Same goes for me, I dispensed it from a pump bottle. It looks like honey, it smells almost like honey, a little goes a very long way and it’s full of good stuff. I can completely understand why it is so beloved, although I personally did not become a huge fan. It was decent and gave me a little boost of hydration, but I always felt it was sticky, even when using the most minuscule amounts or adding a mist afterwards. I wanted to love it so much but finally decided to part with it as part of my facial routine. I am currently using it as a moisturizing layer on my arms and hands after coming out of the shower. Weirdly enough, it’s not as sticky on my body, so I bask in the smell of sweet honey and enjoy it as part of my body care routine. (Face: 3/5 - WNR; Body: 4/5 - RP)

My Beauty Diary Black Pearl Sheet Mask Oh the plumpness! I love everything about this sheet mask. The fragrance is faint but pleasant, the mask is easy to unfold due to the plastic sheet stuck to it, simple to apply and the fit is fine. After leaving this on for 20 minutes, I notice a visible difference in hydration and firmness of skin, I feel plump and moisturized. This sheet mask was my savior when beginning to use tretinoin and I now enjoy it as a special treatment once a week. It is literally dripping with essence. The only reason I’m not rating it as a holy grail is that I’m stubborn and I want to have a reason to continue to try sheet masks in search of it. (4.8/5 - RP so much)

My Beauty Diary Apple Polyphenol Sheet Mask Similar to the Black Pearl, although not quite as moisturizing. I love these fresh out of the refrigerator in summertime. Bonus: This smells like apple cider. Yum. (4/5 - RP)

Tosowoong Pure Propolis Sheet Mask This is a decent sheet mask. The fit is good, it’s saturated with essence, it doesn’t smell like anything to me. The effect it has on my skin is no miracle, but I notice a good boost in hydration. The price point is fine as well. (3.8/5 - RP)

Cosmetic Refrigerator - Must have or Frill? [Discussion] AsianBeauty

How many of us actually store our skincare in the fridge?

I am tempted to buy a cosmetic fridge but i resisted the temptation, i share my regular fridge with all my skincare. Lots of good refrigerator door real estate taken up by masks and serums.

After washing your face/shower, the first thing to do is apply the Vitamin C serum... which has to be stored in the refrigerator. i bought this mini refrigerator to store some skincare. photo, photo

another school of thought is this

"Fluctuating temperatures affect your products. Hot temperatures, and please don’t put your products in the refrigerator, we see that all the time as a tip a lot, it doesn’t make them last longer and it can break them down faster."

Do you think putting our skincare in the fridge is good or bad?

Sidmool Astaxanthin storage help AsianBeauty

I'm interested in ordering the Astaxanthin serum from Sidmool but I'm unsure as to how I'm supposed to store it in order to preserve the integrity of the serum. I store my Vitamin C serum in the refrigerator to prevent it from oxidising, so I reckon I'll do the same thing for the Astaxanthin although I'd like to know if it can oxidise and become 'useless'.

Thank you :)

Ranked by the Japanese: No. 1 Beauty Products in Japan so far in 2016 AsianBeauty

Hi all! I usually lurk, get excited about everyone’s reviews, enjoy everyone’s humor, and throw upvotes around when I get the chance :)

I thought I’d contribute something by sharing my Japanese colleague’s translation about some cosme.net’s top ranking new Japanese products released in the first half of 2016! (They are ranked by user reviews.)

Products covered here
1) Top of the top! RMK Lip Jelly Gloss
2) Sunscreen Category No. 1! Anessa Essence UV Aqua Booster
3) Serum/Booster Category No. 1! Naturie Skin Conditioning Gel
4) Sheet Mask Category No. 1! Keana Nadeshiko Rice Mask
5) Shampoo/Conditioner Category No. 1! Dear Beaute Oil in Shampoo/Conditioner

1) Top of the top! RMK Lip Jelly Gloss:
(photo for reference)
This gloss is the top reviewed product on cosme.net, coming out top of a total of 3,478 products! These 11 colours jelly gloss looks really nice to apply, as they have this juicy translucent look, and gives a bouncy appearance to the lips.

The 11 colors available are:
01 Sparkle Red
02 Romantic Pink
03 Baby Blue
04 Orange Pearl
05 Shiny Pink
06 Candy Pink
07 Coral Pink
08 Lavender
EX-01 Sparkling Ruby
EX-02 Sparkle Pink
EX-03 Vivid Pink

The Baby Blue is the most popular in Japan right now, among others in the same color range like bluish pink, lavender and violet. It’s a seldom seen color, and gives a nice laminated look.

2) Sunscreen Category No. 1! Anessa Essence UV Aqua Booster:
(photo for reference)
There are two items here, and the silver Anessa Essence took the number one spot (the gold one is number three!) Reviews praise it for being able to provide high UV protection and resistance towards water and sweat.

By the way, the difference between the gold and silver is that the silver Anessa Essence contains hyaluronic acid, and the gold one applies easily, and has been called “super waterproof”!

3) Serum/Booster Category No. 1! Naturie Skin Conditioning Gel
(photo for reference)
This is a adlay-based gel-type face lotion (some may know adlay as Job’s Tears), and it has gotten popular through reviews and recommendation (in fact, my colleague and I were at one of the Kyoto Matsumoto Kiyoshi, there were only five bottles left on the two shelves that were reserved for this product!)

Apparently adlay is used in traditional Chinese medicine, and is effective against acne, discoloration, freckles. It's good against aging too! It has a cooling feel, which makes it even better when stored in the refrigerator.

Another reason why it’s popular is how reviews say that when this lotion, when combined with Nivea cream, beautifies the skin!

4) Sheet Mask Category No. 1! Keana Nadeshiko Rice Mask
(photo for reference)
I’m into design, so this package really got my eye. These masks are made of 100% Japanese rice. Reviews praise its thick sheets, the lotion has an elastic feel, and there are a lot of serum left over even after the sheets are used.

5) Shampoo/Conditioner Category No. 1! Dear Beaute Oil in Shampoo/Conditioner
(photo for reference)
Another beautifully designed packaging! It is said to be relatively cheap, has a great fragrance, and works as well as the professional shampoos in salons. And they look great in the bathroom for sure!

There are two colors in this series: the green for thin hair, the orange for thick hair.

Hope it has been interesting, and thank you for reading! The cosme.net link if you read Japanese: @Cosme New Products of first half of 2016

Also, salute to all who is good at reddit formatting! It’s not easy! :O

Another OST C20 Question (I know, I'm sorry) AsianBeauty

Hey guys,

I know, I know, not another OST C20 Vitamin C serum question. This question has probably been answered on this forum already, but I can't seem to find it. I ordered the serum along with the It's Skin Power 10 Formula LI Effector. I also just found out I have to be away from home throughout the next month, and there won't be a refrigerator for me to store the serum (I live in a very hot country so a fridge is needed). What I would like to know is if it's alright if I don't open the C20 box at all, and pop it straight into the fridge when it arrives, and then at the end of May, once I'm back home, will I be able to use it or would it have oxidized or something?

My plan is to start using the It's Skin VI Effector once it arrives, use it throughout the month, and once I'm back home incorporate C20 into my routine. Is this a good idea? Many thanks from your fellow ABer.

Has anyone tried this USB fridge before? AsianBeauty

I would love nothing more than one of the bigger cosmetic/skincare fridges, but thought that as a student, this little guy should be just enough for my prescription skin cream (requires refrigeration and I'm TERRIFIED a housemate will toss it/eat it) and a vit C serum. And in a few years when I'm earning money, I can go to town on a bigger fridge then (perhaps the costco-sized Shark Sauce can live there :D).

Has anyone used this model of fridge before? It only goes down to 8 C/46.4 F, is that cold enough for vit C?

A theory on why you're addicted to sheet masks AsianBeauty

Warning: Truly random thoughts ahead that will add nothing of substance to your routine...

A little background: I am a psychologist, so perhaps it's natural that since I started AB a few months ago, I've been fascinated by the link between skincare, particularly Korean-style skincare, and mental health. I loved the article by /u/Sharkus_Reincarnus on how AB helped manage depression. I started AB during a very difficult period in my life and it has also helped me cope emotionally and mentally, perhaps more than anything else I’ve done.

Specifically, I have found sheet masks to be one of my favorite ways to relax. I find myself thinking after a stressful day – “I can’t wait to go home and sheet mask” or “I’ve really earned a sheet mask today.” Or even – “I’m so upset right now, I NEED A SHEET MASK.” But why? Honestly, I don’t think sheet masks make a huge difference in my skin, and the effects for me are pretty temporary. The main thing I get from sheet masks is relaxation. But why are sheet masks relaxing?

Then one day it popped into my head – the mammalian diving reflex. Now, before I lose you completely, let me explain. I got to thinking about this because there is a technique that is taught in a program called dialectical behavior therapy for quick reduction of extreme emotional distress. Basically, the technique is to dunk your face in ice cold water. It sounds crazy, but many people find it really helpful when their emotions are dangerously out of control.

The theory behind why this works is that it triggers the mammalian diving reflex. Basically, we share ancestors with creatures who had to swim in the ocean for survival (like seals). In order to survive being underwater, we mammals developed a reflex that triggers a series of reactions when our faces touch cold water (sound familiar)? Our heart rates slow down, and the brain forces the body to relax to conserve oxygen. This in turn reduces anxiety and creates a sense of calm.

Now, this is just a theory, but … is this maybe partly why sheet masks are so addictive? Any why many people store their sheet masks in the refrigerator to make them even colder? Basically – do we love sheet masks because of a reflex from way back in our evolution that helped our seal-like ancestors swim in the ocean??

By the way, I am aware this is very different than the type of stuff that is typically posted here. I hope I’m not going too far off the deep end (no pun intended) in sharing this thought, in case there are other psychology nerds here who might find it interesting.

TL; DR: Theory: We are partly addicted to sheet masks because as mammals, we calm down when our faces are covered in cold water.

Travel-friendly (read: no refrigerator!) Vitamin C products? AsianBeauty

I have a ton of travel to do in the next couple months (including my first ever trip to Asia (Tokyo and surrounding areas!), and also lots of camping) and I will have inconsistent access to refrigeration.

Anti-aging is my number one skin care concern (I am 30 years old, and a red-head. I've got an uphill battle) so I'd prefer to not go without Vitamin C completely while I am traveling.

Are there products with more stable Vit. C formulas? Like maybe ampules?

I saw some posts asking similar questions, but they seemed to be from a while ago, so I am hoping that there has been some development on this topic.

Thanks for your help everyone!!

Can you store a FTE in the refrigerator? AsianBeauty

I know a lot of people store their skincare in the fridge, especially in the summer, but I was wondering if storing a galactomyces product in low temperature would affect it negatively. I think most manufacturer's recommendations are to store products in room temperature but I would like to break the rules if I can...although my fridge does get ridiculously cold sometimes...I sometimes find frost on certain items!

HELP! Traveling with Vitamin C? AsianBeauty

Does anyone have any experience traveling with Vitamin C? So I'll be leaving on the 23rd and I have to turn off all the electricity in my apartment. My OST C21.5 is currently sitting in my refrigerator. I've only used about a quarter of it. I'll be gone for more than a week so I was planning on bringing it with me. But I'm worried that it will oxidize while on the plane. My flight is around 2 hours but taking in travel times it'll probably be out of the refrigerator for around 6 hours. So should I take it with me or try to use most of it up before I leave? Any help would be really appreciated! Thanks everyone!

I break immediately from OST vitamin C serum. What to do? AsianBeauty

I bought recently this serum from ebay. And I tried it on for three days and I've got like 3 red medium pimples on my face from it. I stopped, pimples stopped, I started again, pimples started. Do I continue until my skin can handle the serum? How long shelf life does this serum have without keeping it in a refrigerator?

And all this time I thought husbands and boyfriends were purchasing AB products for you...thanks bae? AsianBeauty

Ok so, I kept seeing how everyone got their order from bae and I ACTUALLY thought that husbands and boyfriends were looking up AB retailers, reviews, wish lists, etc and then going and ordering your desired products! I thought, Wow! That is simply amazing... My husband would never.... I went into a couple of dissertations as to why AB is the way of the skin and I think he fell asleep.. So occasionally, he'll ask me what a mask is for and I've tried to let me pamper his face but there is no way...

So I just have my basket of goodies under the sink that I sort thru morning and night and I've asked him to bring my OST C20 from the refrigerator to me before but that's about as much I include him in my AB obsession.

So I'm figuring out everyone's bae is actually their favorite AB retailer? Lol. Jolse, you're my number one.. Esp with all the CosRx love :)

Oooh that smell!: Sanitizing a Konjac Sponge AsianBeauty

I caved and FINALLY bought a konjac sponge. It arrived after a 2+ week wait, and I was super excited to use it. It was like rubbing soft kittens across my face to exfoliate. About four days later I go to use it and it has a major funk despite my patting it dry. I exclaim a huge WTF and abandon it.

Fast forward to today: I finally google how to sanitize my konjac sponge in the desperate hopes that I don't have to throw mine out and wait months for another. I found this article and decided to give the hot water method a try. It's hanging up to dry right now, but everything smells normal so far.

I looked at that whole instruction page, and it mentioned keeping your sponge in the refrigerator if you are in a humid climate. Do any of you store your sponge that way?

tl;dr Konjac sponge got funky fast, so I threw it in hot water. I'm now contemplating storing it in the fridge.

Snail product for sensitive skin? AsianBeauty

My face is very sensitive to fragrance and alcohol (I think). I don't break out often, but a lot of sheet masks make my face really red afterwards. My skin was typically very dry, but since switching to AB and the fact that it's summer now my skin has become normal/dry. I get a lot of redness near my nose and cheeks (not rosacea or eczema).

What snail product should I try?

Mizon?

Benton? (a bit concerned with this brand's preservatives since my apartment has no A/C and gets very hot. Considered storing it in the refrigerator, but it is shared with roommates and pretty gross)

Cosrx?

Any other brands?

Bathroom faucet filter solution and untangling tap water confusion AsianBeauty

Okay, so this is going to be my first big post here :). It needs more research, but I have a liberal arts degree so... I tried my best. Hopefully someone else can chime in! Also, you can skip part one if this is too long for you!

Part One: Tap water's effect on skin I've recently relocated to Houston, TX from the Pacific Northwest. The water in the PNW is known as some of the best tap water in the country. It doesn't contain fluoride (to clarify, I'm not opposed to drinking fluoride, just putting it on my skin), has a pH range of 7.2-8.2, and is some of the softest city water. Almost no one there bothers to filter their tap water, and some even insist water from the tap tastes better than bottled water.

The first thing I noticed in Houston was how terrible the tap water tasted. Even filtered water from the tap had a strange taste and texture. After a few months I noticed my hair thinning in the front and tons of split ends... things have never effected me before...but I assumed it was the stress of a new job. However, my skin became progressively worse eventually leading me to r/AsianBeauty (love you guys!). My skin was so dry it started to peel, I started getting pimples weekly (note: before the move I got about 4 pimples in my lifetime), the pores on my nose grew so big they should've gotten bail-out money, and my skin seemed resistant to EVERYTHING that used to work.

Here's how I deduced that the water specifically was the culprit for my skin woes. 1) Skin is a fickle friend, so this doesn't pinpoint water by itself, but my skincare regimen that had been working for years, stopped working. 2) Humidity. My first thought was the climate change... but Portland, OR has a yearly humidity average of 73% while Houston, TX has an average of 75%. 3) My skin, hair, and nails were also suffering. My whole body felt like it was becoming brittle. Also, while my job can be stressful, I definitely felt more stressed in grad school, so I was doubting that this was the reason for my hair breakage. 4) On a trip back home last summer (when humidity is peaking in Houston and Oregon is extremely dry) my skin was less dry, my pores cleared up, and my hair felt soft and luscious instead of dry and brittle.

Part Two: WHY tap water can harm your skin Tap water is constantly tested and is (almost) always safe to drink in the US. Almost no other cities get the benefit of fresh mountain spring water running through their taps, yet their water passes the strict guidelines. (Also want to note that this isn't putting Portland above other cities... they can be extremely stupid about their water. A few years ago they wanted to drain the entire reservoir because someone peed in it. California might never have forgiven us if that happened).

Here are some of these guidelines:

  • Testing several hundred times per month

  • Free of harmful bacteria

  • Free of dangerous pollutants

But here are some aspects that could harm your skin:

  • pH levels can range from 5.0-9.0

  • silicon dioxide is unregulated (silica in water can exist in dissolved, particle, or colloidal form which can result in "build up" on scalp or film over skin)

  • Fluoride added (debated, but some argue that when used topically, it damages collagen and contributes to dry skin)

  • "Hard" water is acceptable, and common, in most cities. Hard water is generally more basic and contains additional deposits, such as calcium.

Crap.

Part 3: The best water for your skin

Non-Acidic Drinking-water with a pH lower than 6.5 is considered acidic and may contain lead or copper (usually from degrading plumbing). Water from lakes, streams, even mountains tend to be more acidic because of the increasing CO2 while well or ground water is less acidic as it is less affected by CO2.

Non-Basic Drinking water with a pH higher than 8.5 is considered basic. Basic water is actually what has caused my skin woes, since Houston water is generally more basic than Portland's. Cities with well/ground water systems usually have water with a higher pH.

Softer water Hard water contains dissolved minerals (like calcium) while soft water is treated water where the only mineral is sodium. While soft water generally has a lower pH than hard water, calculating "hard" and "soft" water is not solely based on the pH, but a number of different factors that my brain doesn't let me understand because science iz hrd.

Aaannddd... a bunch of other stuff that is too complicated for me. Hopefully someone else can come up with other aspects we should look for in water!

Part 4: What to do This is where I'm stuck. Filtering water (carbon, ion and sulfite, fluoride, and sediment are all considered filters, but they each do something different. Most people are familiar with carbon filters.) will help with SOME of the issues of tap water. Filtering helps remove silicon dioxide, a significant amount of fluoride, large particles, contaminates, harmful and harmless bacteria, etc... Filtering can also have an effect on pH, generally lowering it through the removal of particles and minerals.

However, water hardness is effected by calcium and magnesium levels. Water softeners act through adding sodium ion which dissolves calcium and magnesium deposits (ok, doesn't "dissolve" but ion-exchanges, catalytic conversion... oxi-whatever... SCIENCE!). These, however, are generally giant-ass machines that are thousands of dollars. Bottled water is usually softer than tap water, but some aren't, so do research before-hand!

So, while water hardness has clearly harmed my skin, it seems that there is nothing I can do about it unless I only want to bathe in Disani.

My current filter solution For now, I've found this great mini carbon filter Every Drop that works perfect for my bathroom vanity. My bathroom sink didn't fit the faucet filters, and the big filters looked ugly. This one also comes in a little case, and I use the bottom as a little bowl to keep the filtered water in to dip my konjac sponge into. Plus, it's super cute!

Here's some pics of the filter, as well as my new vanity set up for my skincare routine and face masks. I'm still making the transition into full-AB, so I have some non-AB stuff on my vanity (so sorry!). Also still waiting on my 100+ face mask haul that none of my non-AB friends understand or support...

Also, here's some sources:

Climate

Weather

US Water Regulations

Super biased blog about fluoride, but still interesting

Filters vs. Softeners

pH of drinking water

Hard vs. Soft water

TL;DR Both pH and hard water can harm your skin, hair, and body. Bottled water is (usually) "soft" and has a lower pH. But, if your butler or trained Tibetan Mastiff can't remember to stock your bathroom cabinets like a refrigerator from MTV Cribs, you can make like the plebeians and use a charcoal filter.
