School is out for the year and boy, am I glad!
As I have always done after school. I walked home by myself, the half mile or so to my house. School has been bad ever since we moved here. No one will talk to me or have anything to do with me.
It is not me I think, the other kids in school just don’t take to strangers. Especially when you look different than they do. They are concerned about the social aspect of school rather than other things that I find important. So, no friends for me here.
Walking home one day, I caught out of the corner of my eye a shadow that could have been a person. I turned quickly to see who it was and guess what? There wasn’t anyone there. Did I imagine it? Was it real?
That thought vanished instantly the closer I got to home. Mom will be there, such as it is. She will not talk to me at all these days. She just sits around drinking and smoking cigarettes. She was still sitting on the couch in her bathrobe, watching a tv game show. She was oblivious to what was going on around her. I could be gone and she would not notice my absence.
My dad would not be home till late at night. Here lately for the past several months. He would come home later and later. I asked him why and he woulld pretend to not here me. He would get his beer out of the refrigerator and go out on the back porch. He didn’t really care what I did, as long as I left him alone. What can I say about my parents? Well probably not much! So sad, but there isn’t anything to say. I know that I will pack up and leave as soon as I graduate from high school.
I am not really hungry, but I think I will go down to the local burger place. It is not that far a walk to get there. So here I go out the door.
Walking settles the mind, they say. It certainly does for me!
As I walked my mind has a tendency to relax. Letting go of all the days stresses, relaxing me. I was about half way there to the burger place when the local bully turned toward me from a side street. I quickly looked around and there was no place to go. I knew I was about to get the crap knocked out of me. These bullies are totally vicious and uncaring guys who get off hurting people badly. Rumor has it that one of the boys that disappeared was beaten to death by them last summer.
It was too late to turn and run away from them. They were too close to me. I could not believe it when all five of them walked right past me. Maybe the twilight darkness or maybe they were not interested in me at the moment. Anyway I was safe from them.
I silently thanked what ever is holy for my good fortune in not getting beat up. Taking a deep breath, I turned and continued on down the street. Then I caught a bare vision in the dark shadows out of the corner of my eye again.
I am not going to hurt you. Will you come out and talk? I could see the movement as he or she moved away.
“Stay away from me.” the voice said. The voice quivered with fear as the voice faded when it moved away.
I mean to tell you this is starting to get weird. Twice now there has been someone hiding in the shadows watching me. If it happens again I am going to get goosebumps.
What about the bullies that walked right past me without doing anything. That alone is weirdness 10 fold. I need to be sure to stay away from them if at all possible.
Just my luck. I arrived at the burger pace too late. Wait a minute, it is only 6:30. I walked to the front door and looked at the clock inside the building, it showed 1:30 a.m. What the hell? What happened to the time? What is happening to me?
The voice came out of the shadows saying “I told you to stay away from me. I will tell on you if you don’t.”
I heard the light footsteps moving quickly away. The small footprints leaving a trail when the voice ran through the puddle from the clean up crew washing the walk way down. Why would someone obviously young be out and about at 1:30 a.m.!
This is getting more weird by the minute. I think I had better get myself home before it gets any stranger.
I got home a lot quicker than I left to go to the burger joint. The weird stuff just would not stop happening to me. I got home and yellow police ribbons were all over the place, saying do not cross. My parents, what has happened to them.
I went in and saw the empty rooms in the house. There was not a single stick of furniture in the house. The kitchen, bathrooms and bedrooms were all the same. They were empty.
I went back to the front door and found a notice tacked to the trim to the door. It said “condemned: No entry by order of Police Department” It was dated two years ago.
Shock set in and I sat down and cried. I needed to know what happened to my parents. I was here a few hours ago and there was furniture and my parents were here. I cried out loud to whoever would hear me. What has happened to me. Someone help me!
I looked up and through my tears of terror and horror I saw a lady standing there. Her eyes saddened as she gazed at me. You scared my daughter twice tonight. I know that you must be frightened and confused. So I will answer your questions as I can. First you will want to know what happened to your parents. Well, they went through one of the fastest trials in the history of the courts. The were sentenced to death and were executed last year by the state.
What were they charged with?
They murdered you and put you in the freezer in the garage. When the power was cut off when they didn’t pay the bill. You were found when the neighbors complained about the smell from your decomposing body and the police were able to positively id your remains.
Like a cool breeze that has suddenly come upon him, calmness came upon him. The bullies that walked right pass him. They didn’t do anything to him because they couldn’t see him. His parents already knew he was dead by their hands. They couldn’t see him either.
What about the time difference. I started to the burger place about 6:00 p.m., then it was 1:30a.m.. Why could your daughter see me and no one else could.
The time changed because your time is coming for you to cross over to the afterlife. My daughter can see you because she is my daughter and has the gift just like I do. You are going to ask why your parents killed you.
The answer is not easy. It seems they were drunk and got angry at you three years ago. Once they killed you, they hid your body. Time does not stand still or move normally for you. That’s why time doesn’t seem to work for you. You only see what you need to see.
Your time is done here. When you see the tunnel of light go through it and be at peace.
I see it, I see it!
Go through now!
A sense of wonderful peace came over me as I floated into the tunnel of light. Good bye, Good bye! Then I was gone.
Mommy, is he going to be ok?
I do not know. He will be judged according to his life. They left the house quietly and went home The mother reflecting on the events today and wondering why he was brought to her in this manner. No answers, but many questions.
