Spoilers for The Legend of Korra to follow.
Korra
”I’m the Avatar! You gotta deal with it!”
Introduction
Korra is the current incarnation of the Avatar, the product of a human soul bonded with Raava, the spirit of light. It is the Avatar’s duty to promote harmony between the nations of the world, and between the physical world and the Spirit World. When the Avatar dies, they reincarnate into a new body with a new personality and no memories of their past lives. Korra’s immediate predecessor was Avatar Aang.
As the Avatar, Korra is the only person who can bend (manipulate) all four elements. Starting at the end of Book 1, she can amplify her bending by going into the Avatar State, indicated by glowing eyes. (Prior to the end of Book 2, this also gives Korra the bending expertise of her past lives.) However, if she is killed in the Avatar State, she will not reincarnate, and the Avatar cycle will be broken.
Biography
Korra was born into the Southern Water Tribe, near the south pole. She had a sheltered upbringing there, watched over by her father, Chief Tonraq, and her mother, Senna. At age four, Korra could already bend three elements. She was discovered by the Order of the White Lotus, a group charged with protecting the Avatar. Under the White Lotus’s guidance, Korra trained in water-, earth-, and firebending. At age seventeen, she fled her home to visit Republic City. There, she met and befriended Mako, Bolin, and Asami, and was taught airbending by Tenzin, the son of Avatar Aang. With their help, Korra was able to resolve a non-bender uprising in Republic City. Korra went on to stop a civil war between the Water Tribes, stanch an invasion of dark spirits, take down an anarchist group (nearly dying in the process), and defeat a dictator bent on conquering the Earth Kingdom.
Personality
After being cooped up in the Southern Water Tribe most of her life, Korra is rebellious and eager to see the world. She takes pride in her position as the Avatar and is very confident in her abilities. Korra can be reckless; she won’t back down from a fight, and might even start one herself.
Through her various successes and failures, Korra learns humility and comes to rely more on her friends and allies. She also becomes more cautious and uses the Avatar State less often. Korra will not kill unless it’s absolutely necessary.

Bending
Bending is the manipulation of the four elements - water, earth, fire, and air - via physical motions. The more skilled the bender, the less they have to move to achieve a given effect. With the exception of firebending, bending cannot produce an element, only manipulate existing quantities.
Waterbending
Waterbending is used to control water in its liquid, solid, and gaseous forms. It is the most dependent of the bending arts on one’s environment, since water is not always present. It is versatile and can be used for offense, defense, and increased mobility in and above a body of water. It can also be used to heal wounds. Waterbending is slightly stronger during the night, and it’s at its strongest during a full moon. Water is Korra’s native element, but she does not usually carry water with her.
No Avatar State:
- [Power/Range] Knocks back three people with a stream of water
- [Attack Speed] Launches two quick attacks, hitting her opponent with the second, and stops his water attack
- [Reaction Speed/Freezing] Catches some water and throws it back at her opponent, freezing his head
- [Reaction Speed/Freezing] Freezes a pair of gas grenades before the gas spreads too far
- [Reaction Speed/Power] While underwater, redirects a torpedo
- [Power/Freezing] Creates an ice wall over a river
- [Skill] Disables a mecha tank by bending water into its pipes
- [Reaction Speed/Freezing/Power] Catches Unalaq’s water stream, freezes part of it, and drags him to the ground
- [Power/Freezing] Sends a wave of water up to the arm of Kuvira’s mech and freezes it
- [Mobility/Freezing] Ascends on a water spout, and creates an ice spike to destroy a biplane

With Avatar State:
- [Power] Raises a large wave from the ocean
- [Power] Her clash with Unalaq cracks the icy ground beneath them
- [Range/Precision/Freezing] Shoots jets of water at a flying Zaheer over a great distance, hitting him after a couple tries and freezing his foot
Earthbending
Earthbending allows one to manipulate rocks, dirt, and the like. It tends to be slow but powerful, and it’s ideal for blocking attacks. Certain earthbenders can control metal by bending its earthen impurities; Korra learns to metalbend in Book 3.
No Avatar State:
- [Power/Attack Speed] Raises stone from the ground, launching a gangster into the air
- [Power/Range] Creates a tremor that trips several people
- [Power] Tears up Tarrlok’s office
- [Power] Makes a crater in a stone floor
- [Power] Launches a refrigerator-sized boulder and counters Kuvira’s return
- [Power] Launches two motorcycles simultaneously with pillars raised from the ground
- [Power] Flips a car into the air
- [Power] Overrides the bending of several police officers to lower stone platforms to the ground

- [Metal Power] Pulls open the roof of a train
- [Metal Precision] Bends a metallic poison out of her own body
Unclear if Avatar State:
- [Defense/Power] Raises a wall to block Unalaq’s ice, then shatters the wall into boulders and launches them
- [Reaction Speed/Power] Catches a falling part of a tower
- [Power] Raises several boulders from a street and carries them into the air
With Avatar State:
- [Power/Range] Launches a barrage of boulders at Unalaq while he’s on top of a water spout
- [Power] Hurls four boulders in different directions (assisted by airbending)
- [Power] Cuts off the top of a stone pillar and throws it
- [Power] Slams two pillars together and launches some stone projectiles
- [Power] Throws a house-sized boulder
Firebending
Firebending is used to create and manipulate flames, which, in the Avatar universe, tend to knock things around more than burn them. It’s not very useful for defense (except against other firebenders), but it can be used to enhance one’s movements. Firebending is slightly stronger during the day than at night. Early in the series, it is Korra’s most frequently used element.
No Avatar State:
- [Power] Blasts a man onto a roof
- [Power] Blasts apart some wooden panels
- [Power/Range] Fills a room with fire
- [Power/Range] Launches a fireball that explodes out and knocks people down
- [Power] Fires into a huge sand shark, propelling her sand-sailer out of its mouth
- [Heat] Burns through metal chains in about five seconds
- [Skill] Firebends while her hands and feet are shackled
- [Defense/Reaction Speed] Blocks several firebending attacks
- [Defense] Parts a flame, passing through it unharmed
- [Mobility] Runs along a wall
Unclear if Avatar State:
- [Power] Shatters an ice wall
- [Mobility] Propels herself many stories upward
With Avatar State:
- [Range] Creates a wave of fire
- [Power] Creates a pillar of fire that bursts through solid ice
- [Power/Range] Tears through the dark spirit Vaatu
- [Power] Breaths fire at Vaatu and burns his vines
- [Heat] Breaths fire, melting a chunk of ice in an instant
- [Defense] Blocks a water attack with a fire shield
- [Mobility] Flies by propelling herself with firebending (and a little earthbending)
Airbending
Airbending is relatively weak offensively, but it allows the bender to increase their speed and agility. Korra learned airbending at the end of Book 1, after the other three elements.
No Avatar State:
- [Power] Slams two people into the ceiling with a miniature tornado
- [Power] Lifts up Mako with a tornado and spins him around
- [Power] KOs two soldiers with blasts of air
- [Power] Slams Kuvira into a wall despite her metal shield
- [Power] With the help of many other airbenders, pushes back a giant mech
- [Reaction Speed/Power] Breaks stones with air, then knocks back her attackers
- [Reaction Speed/Defense] Protects herself and others from a bomb
- Note that many people consider this an outlier for Korra’s reaction speed.
- [Reaction Speed/Defense] Blocks Kuvira’s metal strips
- [Defense] Creates a protective bubble around herself and her friends to cushion a fall
- [Skill/Power] Manages to airbend despite her movement being restricted by bloodbending, blasting Amon out a window
- [Skill] Creates a small air current without moving
With Avatar State:
- [Power] Cuts through solid ice with a large air blade
- [Power/Range] Creates a huge wave of air to push back a group of spirits
- [Skill/Power] Traps Unalaq in a vortex and hurls him dozens of meters
- [Skill/Power] Traps Vaatu in a sphere of air (followed by other elements)
- [Movement Speed/Power] Enhances her speed and blows Kuvira away
- [Movement Speed] Beats Tenzin’s kids in an air scooter race
- [Movement Speed] Propels herself on a tornado to avoid Kuvira’s spirit cannon
Physical Abilities
In addition to her bending, Korra has impressive strength, durability, and agility, even by her universe’s standards. I’m fairly sure that the Avatar State does not enhance her physical attributes, but it’s not confirmed either way.
Strength and Hand-to-Hand Skill
- [Kicking] Kicks a police officer away from her
- [Throwing] Throws a ball hard enough to knock Mako back several feet
- [Throwing] Throws a gangster through a window
- [Throwing/Skill] Uses a scarf to throw a large man into a machine, damaging it
- [Skill/Dexterity] Uses a rope to fight two benders
- [Lifting] Lifts Tenzin and his children in a hug
- [Lifting] Lifts Baatar Jr. tied to a chair with one arm
- [Pulling] Breaks chains made of platinum
- [Throwing/Dexterity/Pulling] Uses a chain to grab Zaheer’s leg, and then pulls him out of the air
- It’s possible that she’s using airbending to move the chain, but not metalbending, since the chain is unbendable platinum.
- [Leg Strength/Skill] Throws the Lieutenant with her leg, cracking the glass ceiling they’re on
- [Leg Strength/Skill] Flips Kuvira with her legs
- [Skill] Rolls under a jumping firebender, tripping him in mid-air
- [General Strength] Resists Amon’s bloodbending
Durability
- [Falling/Blunt] Gets pushed down onto a stone platform
- [Blunt] Gets slammed into the ceiling by a boulder
- [Blunt] Takes a direct hit from a large stone block; she takes numerous blows during the fight
- [Abrasion/Blunt] Gets dragged around and then slammed into a metal console, smashing it, then gets up almost immediately
- [Sharp] An icicle shatters against her fist (or she might just be bending it as soon as it touches her)
- [Energy] Survives Vaatu’s beam, which can shatter stone
Speed and Agility
- [Reaction Speed] Dodges blows from a wrench
- [Reaction Speed] Dodges a thrown bolas
- [Reaction Speed] Dodges projectiles from three pro-benders
- [Reaction Speed] Dodges an attack from an extremely fast dark spirit
- [Reaction Speed/Agility] Dodges the Lieutenant’s attack with a backflip, then springs back
- [Reaction Speed/Agility] Dodges a mecha tank's hook with a series of backflips
- [Reaction Speed/Agility] Dodges Tarrlok’s icicles with a jump, then punches one of them
- [Reaction Speed/Agility] Performs backflips to avoid Unalaq’s attacks
- [Agility] Jumps off a ramp over a mecha tank
- [Swimming Speed/Reaction Speed] Dodges two torpedoes while underwater
Spiritual/Energy Abilities
Korra has a number of spiritual abilities. Many of them are unique to the Avatar and require her to go into the Avatar State.
- Restores bending abilities removed by Amon’s bloodbending/chi-blocking
- Avatar Aang could nullify the effects of bloodbending by entering the Avatar State; Korra should be able to do this as well
- In places where there are spirit vines (so, Republic City post-Book 2 and the Foggy Swamp), she can use the vines to locate someone she knows
- Enters the Spirit World by meditating
- Moves rapidly through the Spirit World
- Pacifies dark spirits using a spiritual variation of waterbending
- Diverts spirit energy from Kuvira’s cannon, inadvertently creating a new portal to the Spirit World
Spirit Form
Using energy from Harmonic Convergence, an event that happens once every ten thousand years, Korra was once able to project her spirit from her body as a giant. Korra was disconnected from Raava at the time, so she could only bend her native element of water.
- Travels rapidly through the sky
- Lands from her flight, crashing into Unavaatu
- Shoots a beam of water from her chest, blocking Unavaatus’ beam, then overpowers it and knocks him back
- Catches Unavaatu’s tentacles and knees him in the face
- Throws Unavaatu
- Jumps a long distance
- Pierces Unavaatu’s chest with her hand and pulls out Raava from inside him (after Jinora illuminates Raava)
- Uses her spirit pacification technique to destroy Unavaatu
- Her very presence drives away lesser dark spirits
Intelligence and Other Abilities
- Insulates herself from an electric attack and pretends to have been knocked out by it in order to spring a trap
- Has a little experience with stealth
- Can pilot a speedboat
- Instructs Opal, a new airbender, and has her creating air currents within a minute
- Has experience with public speaking
Weaknesses and Limitations
- Thoroughly restraining her prevents her from bending.
- Early in the series, Korra tends to be stubborn and act without thinking.
- She never learns certain bending sub-skills, such as lightning and lava.
- Prior to Book 4, she has ponytails which can be grabbed.
- Vaatu, the spirit of darkness, was able to remove Raava from Korra. This prevented Korra from bending elements other than water and from entering the Avatar State until she was reunited with Raava using the energy from Harmonic Convergence, though Korra permanently lost her connection to her previous lives.
- She sucks at driving.
- She’s not very photogenic.
