Do you know the feeling that someone is watching you?
Scary, isn’t it?
Sometimes, I catch you just out of the corner of my eye, turning suddenly in your chair to try to catch me. Other times, I can almost feel you tilting your head, tracing my shadow with your eyes.
I’ll move, try to get out of your way. We might be walking down the same street and I’ll cross over to the other side, just so I’m not following you. But you’ll still stop, look up, and scan the horizon. I dart into a nearby alley until you stop looking, my heart pounding in my ears.
I don’t know why you’re always trying to find me. I’ve done nothing to you.
I stopped hiding under your bed or in your closet a while ago, but you’ll still check anyway. Nowadays, I’ll be down in the kitchen, as far away from your bedroom as I can get. I’m sorry if I occasionally upset a dish or a knife, but you almost never wash them and they’re piled up all over the place. Despite my efforts, you’ll still come down the stairs in the middle of the night, cursing and waving your flashlight. I’ll be huddled in a corner, waiting for you to go away.
Even when I’m outside, exploring the nearby woods, I’ll see your eyes watching me from the upstairs window. I’ll stop, stand stock still, but you’ll still come out with a scowl on your face and a knife in your hands.
Yesterday, while you weren’t home, I turned off all your lights for you. That was a mistake. You went raging around the place, flipping on every switch and screaming at me to come out. I was behind the refrigerator, rocking back and forth and crying to myself.
I’ll make it up to you tonight, I promise. I can see you shivering under your sheets. Despite the sheen of sweat on your forehead, you're so cold that you can’t even fall asleep.
Don’t worry. I’ll keep you warm.
