W.O.E. - The Real World libraryofshadows

Here is the simple truth. Every nightmare is real. Monsters DO exist.
there IS good and evil, and I am here to help you. My name is Kato. I am a warrior of a sort. The Warrior of Earth, and I am here to defend this world. I'm not sure how many individuals like me exist, but I hope there are a lot because based on what I have seen we will need them.
Let me clarify here. I don't quite believe in a heaven, just in a hell. We are alone in our struggle, and I have not once been aided by an angelic being. Yet, I was chosen.
The question remains...by whom?

As always there is only one place to start, the beginning. I am, or was, your typical kid. Go to school, look at hot girls, go home, and play Call of Duty on my Xbox. Physically I was average. Mentally I was average. I was a nobody. Having my entire life torn to shreds and then rebuilt was definitely NOT my life plan. January 16th, and it is the night before my 18th birthday. It was a great day and I recall every detail of the last day with my family. Dad got home from work early to eat dinner and Mom had made ice cream cake. Betty, my sister, thought I was annoying from her 21 year old college perspective, but even she was nice that evening. We ate dinner and cake, watched a movie, and I went to sleep feeling happy and anticipating the next day ...how foolish of me.

[Thunder]

[Ears Ringing]

[Wind Howling]

I woke up amid chaos. All around me I saw darkness. I was in the middle of a field with waist high grass surrounding me. I was on my back and the sky was completely black. Not a single star could be seen, and the only light was a dull glow that pervaded from one direction. It was storming and dark ominous trees surrounded me. I tried to get up and a searing pain shot through my body. My vision started darting in and out as I looked down only to see my body glow with a light as white as a thousand suns. A sharp pain rippled through my skull and the darkness took me.

When I woke up I felt different. I had a blasting headache and my body felt like it was drained of energy. I got up and noticed I was completely naked, yet I wasn't burned or hurt in any other way. The raging storm had abated, but it was still pitch black out with a dull red glow in the distance. Rising, I stumbled from tree to tree fighting my knee' urge to give out until I spotted a cabin in the middle of the woods. I continued towards it and was struck by a sense of misgiving. The house looked brand new, although it was apparent that no one was home. I entered the front doorway and to the right of me there was a small black table trimmed with gold.

The table had a single note written in golden ink that read, "You have been chosen." Ominous right? I pushed the note to the back of my mind and continued to explore the house. It was immaculate. One thing that struck me was that there were no lights.
There was something illuminating the rooms but there was not a source.
I continued around until i stumbled into the bathroom and took a look at myself.
What I saw was crazy. I looked physically perfect. Every muscle in my body was etched in perfect defined detail. My skin was flawless, and I had grown a few inches to be about 6'4". All of my hair was gone but it was already growing back a radiant gold color with a streak of pure black. I had brown hair. As i pondered over this development I stumbled even further into the bedroom. It was incredible. The bed looked and was soft as a cloud, and was twice the size of a king-sized bed. Opening the wardrobe in the room I found close-fitting clothing that all fit perfectly on my body. Very strange.
The funny part is that I was still trying to rationalize what was happening.
"Maybe I've been abducted by aliens" or "Maybe it is a dream." I continued through the house and noticed a vault with a solid steel door. The door is huge, about 15x15 and had, "War Room" written on a sign above it. I pushed the vault door open as if it were weightless, and it swung on silent hinges. Inside was a striking sight. Weapons were EVERYWHERE. On the walls, on racks. on tables, and everywhere in between.
All kinds of stuff. Here is a list of some:

-Katanas

-Longswords

-M1911's

-Remington Model 700 XCR's

-Flail

-Spears

-Greek Fire pots

-Grenades

And much MUCH more. Another interesting discovery is that every item had multiple versions wrought in different metals. Even the bullets had multiple metals. The only metals I could identify at the time were gold, silver, and steel.

Needless to say, I was freaking out. weird stuff was happening and I wanted to run out of there and back home. As I made my way towards the door I froze in terror.
On the table by the door was another note. Written in blood-red in...wait no...written in blood. IT said, "Touch me for the truth". So being the the moron I am I touched it.

[Blackness]

[Utter Silence]

[Weightlessness]

What I saw I cannot begin to explain fully, nor do I remember it all. I saw the Earth being created by Volcanic eruptions, I saw Hitler's armies storming across Europe, I saw the planes fly into the World Trade Center in NYC, and many other tragic events. That is when I heard the voice for the first time. it was deep and guttural, somewhere between an animal's growl and a human's murmur. What he said was...disturbing.

"Witness the POWER. Is it not perfect? Welcome Kato, gaze upon the destruction. It is nothing compared to what you will be a part of. I am the bringer of Darkness and YOU will be my CATALYST!"

[Pain]

[Blackness]

I came back into reality gasping for air and in a panic. I could not believe what I had just seen. "Who in the hell was that" I thought.............

My entire body was stiff as if I had worked out too hard, and I was scared as I’d ever been. I shuffled to the kitchen, constantly dreading seeing another note somewhere in the house. I found some food, which wouldn’t be odd at all except for the fact that every selection was my favorite. As you would guess I love pizza and there it was in the refrigerator. Dr. Pepper? Check. Grape Juice? Check. Every single thing I enjoyed was there. At this point I had enough of freak occurrences for one evening. I sprinted into the bedroom and passed out on the bed.

Waking up I felt considerably better. The splitting headache was gone and for the most part my body felt like it should. At this point, I was confused about my next step. I’m in a random mythical forest that is starless in a random cabin that is way too nice to be abandoned. Oh, not to mention, I’m being sent random notes in Golden ink and blood and being told I am the “Catalyst” or whatever the hell that meant.

So I did the same thing I used to do, I went to eat breakfast. As I got up and changed into some sweats and T-shirt I saw a doorway, which is odd because I was certain I hadn’t seen one in that spot the night before. It was directly on the wall across from what was now my bed. After the night before I had resigned myself to being surprised and afraid so walking through a randomly appearing doorway? Easy.

I did, however, quietly open the door as to not disturb anything that might be on the other side. What I found was an identical bedroom to mine, and in the bed was another person! I’m not sure how they heard me open the door but he must have because his head shot up and he said,

”Please don’t tell me you woke up in a field too?”

I reply, ”You guessed it so what exactly happened to you?”

I knew that he hadn’t been there beforehand and I doubted he stumbled through the house, through my room and into this one without me noticed. So clearly something different had happened to him.

His whole story of waking up, body burning, glowing white, and hearing a voice was the same as mine. Except for the fact that he couldn’t remember what the voice said, or so he says. He also didn’t stumble to a cabin, he just remembers blacking out and waking up in the bed.

Looking at him I noticed a few things. His body was in good shape like my newly transformed figure, his hair was all black, and he had grey eyes which was unsettling. On a hunch I told him,

”Check yourself in the mirror you might be surprised, I surely was.”

He walks into his bathroom and I hear, ”What the f-! No. No. No. This CAN’T be happening.”

He stormed back out and shouted, ”You did this to me! You are the problem! What the HELL did you do?!”

He looked like he was about to explode, but suddenly his body seemed to drain of energy and he murmured softly,

”I’m sorry that was…so unlike me. I never EVER get angry like that. I’m just in shock; do you look so different too?”

I reply, ”Yeah it is pretty crazy but I can’t really complain about it too much it was a definite improvement.”

He chuckled softly, ”Fair enough, is there a kitchen in this place?”

I nodded and led him to the kitchen. We ate the classic meal of bacon and scrambled eggs in total silence. We both had a lot to think about, and we were still 18 year olds; we needed our food. After we were done eating I asked him if he had any notes written in his room. When he looked confused I rose and told him to,

”Follow me I’ll explain.”

He looked very nervous but followed me to the entryway of the cabin where the table was. As I looked at it I froze. Sitting there, on the table, was another note written in golden ink. I proceeded to explain to him what had happened with the notes last night as well as what the deep voice had said to me. He just looked at me like I was crazy, as if the rest of our days hadn’t been, and asked,

”Well is this the same golden note from last night?”

”No.” I reply.

We approached cautiously towards the note as if it were a wild animal, because at this point it wasn’t safe to rule something THAT crazy as a possibility. On it was written,

”Tbvlxnb Zoux. Tbvlxnb Ormuyw. Utx xg gypb oqqypb. Tiyvb 3 xg 5 qbnoyw. Doyw ym vxmm owk vxmm ym doyw. Jru byuibq toh, mxnbxwb TYVV jb mvoyw.”

Initially we were confused. This was clearly not a language. Yet, as I looked I felt something in my brain tug, and then snap. All of a sudden I could read it clear as English. It was CODE! And, better yet, I could read it. The translation was,

”Welcome Kato. Welcome Austin. Two of five arrive. 3 of 5 remain. But either way someone WILL be slain.”

My first thought was, “I didn’t even ask Austin for his name…” Immediately followed by, “Who are the other 3 then and how do we find them?” At this point I wasn’t focusing on the, “Will be slain” comment, because answers are what I wanted.

As my thoughts came together I turned to Austin who had the same look of revelation that I assumed I had. We looked at each other and sat down to make a game plan. We went over the events that led us to be in the cabin. I filled him in on my experience, and how it was different from his. What we eventually decided was simple, we even wrote it down on a notepad we found in a cabinet.

Game Plan

1. Explore Outside in the woods.

2. Gather supplies.

3. Search for others.

4. Acquire a computer and phones.

Realizing that we still weren’t quite sure what was in the house we kept searching. We found the same rooms I’ve mentioned, so we started looking through things. We eventually found an unlocked safe. The weird part was that it was full. Inside the safe we found stacks of money, as well as two smart phones. Scratch that off of the list.

We agree it is as good a time as ever to leave. We go back into our respective rooms to change. I put on black jeans and sneakers, with the same white T-shirt and a leather jacket. Then, and I’m not sure why, but I had the feeling I needed a weapon. So I walked to the war room and picked up a small steel knife with a 4-in. blade. I hid the weapon in a hidden sheath within the leather jacket. Austin came out and told me we were ready so we were off!

The first big surprise came when we opened up the front door warily. A blast of icy wind rushed into the entryway, and we were dumbstruck when we look out and saw…a street. Where was the damn forest?! We rushed back into the cabin looking out the windows and we still saw the woods, yet…we were not in the woods it seemed. We talked and decided we had to leave at some point so we walked outside once again. Venturing down the street with about $5,000 in cash we bought some must-haves. Here is what we ended up with:

-Every possible Axe product

-Really nice watches (Why not)

-Xbox 360 (Gotta stay true to you)

-Call of Duty Ghosts

-A few sports illustrated posters (To liven up the place)

With these COMPLETELY necessary items we went home. On a serious note we found out very important information. One, we were in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Two, our arrival happened in a week that a record of 17 people had been murdered in the streets by unknown causes. Their bodies torn apart…Coincidence? I think not…………

Once we found out about the murder string we were hooked.

”Do you think this is related to us being transported here?” Austin asked me.

”It seems too coincidental, we must be linked somehow but I haven’t the slightest clue how.”

Austin and I thought silently for a moment when, all of a sudden, three police cars go barreling down the street with all sirens on. We shared a look of understanding and sprinted after the police cars. Other than the physical transformation, this was the first discovery that we had many new traits. As Austin and I ran we seemed to not tire at all. We keep sprinting faster…and faster…seemingly without a limit until we actually caught up and are keeping pace with the police cars. Austin glanced back and laughed at me as we followed the rest of the way to the police’s destination.

That destination turned out to be a rundown school. We learned later on through some investigating that the school was the sight of a lot of vandalism and gang business. The scene was a horror show. Bodies of seven individuals were strewn about the packed earth in front of the school. Blood spattered the wall where a body was near, and all of the bodies had throats torn, limbs ripped off and most disturbingly…A hideous grin.

Austin and I acted as if we were normal spectators but already knew that we would not be able to get closer and look around. We eventually decided to go back to our cabin. No point in waiting around. There, we devised a plan. That night Austin and I walked all the way to the school.

Austin stuffs his hands in his pockets, ”Dude, it is pitch black outside we should have bought flashlights today.”

I thought it was a weird time to talk about shopping but whatever. ”Yeah you’re probably right; I wish we brought more than a few knives. Whatever killed those people is clearly inhuman.”

We both pondered that thought as we walked towards death itself.

As we approached the school we noticed the blood and bodies were gone yet the stench still remained. Walking to the school door we keep a vigilant watch on our surroundings. Prepared for anything that could be thrown our way. I reached the door first, it was locked.

“Austin the door is locked. I’m going to have to break in watch my back for police…well watch for some hostile creature too I guess.”

He nodded and turned around. My break-in tactic was fairly straight forward, body slam the door. Surprisingly, the door gave the first slam and we were in. We noticed quickly that the stench was much heavier inside, odd because we assumed it was from the bodies outside. It turns out we got half of that correct. Inside all the rooms were bodies, presumably other murders that hadn’t been discovered. They all had the same features. Blood everywhere, no limbs, torn throats, etc. It was gruesome. We continued through the school checking every room until we found something odd about one. The door was closed and molding. Black mold. We knew it was dangerous but we went in, we ran as fast as a speeding car what could mold do right? Wrong. The moment we stepped in we began coughing harshly. I could taste blood in my mouth and I was struggling to breathe. Austin was as well. All of a sudden a dark figure streaked across the back of the dim room. Austin and I back up relieving some of the coughing.

I look closely trying to pierce the darkness with my eyes, “Uhhh Austin what the HELL was that?!”

He looks deep into the room as well and whispers, ”I don’t have a clue.”

So great, random figure in a room full of cough-inducing black mold.

“Austin follow behind me and cover your mouth and nose with your shirt.”

It was clear that whatever it was felt safe inside the room so we needed to go in after it.

Walking into the room my blood rushed through my body. Time seemed to slow down, and every detail was clear. I FELT a change in the wind patterns in the room from my right and throw the first of my steel knives. Amazingly, it hits this creature in the chest and it howls. Austin is fast as well and he charges the thing a knife in each hand. I pull out my last knife and follow behind him.

[Slash] Austin swings both knives in a wide arc at the creatures head. He misses as the creature darts back.

I charged forward like a human spear and drove the creature into the wall, I go to pull back when talons as sharp as a razor slash my arm and blood sprays everywhere. I fall back as Austin stabs the creature in each eye. As I blackout from pain and/or blood loss Austin was shouting my name. The last thing I saw was the creatures golden eyes splattered over the knives.

[Blackness]

[Pain]

[Weightlessness]

I opened my eyes recalling the scene I had just seen. I was floating above the world again looking down at events of terrible effect. I knew all too well where I was. I hadn’t been able to stop thinking about it since the first time I heard HIS Voice,

**”So Kato, you have slain the first of many creatures that I control. It might hearten you to know that the *Zyrinth** you slew was once a creature of good. However, goodness is weakness and corrupting such an innocent mind was…easy. Even as you slay my minions you inch closer to my final goal. CONTINUE now in your suffering Kato. FEEL this pain which will torment your world!”***

[Pain]

[Blackness]

I woke up again in my bed. Austin was nowhere to be seen, but I looked down to spot bandages all over my arm. Forcing myself out of bed I ventured out to find Austin, we needed to talk. He was in the entryway with a look of shock on his face. Concern emanated throughout my body at the sight.

”Austin” I say, ”What is wrong?

He looked slowly at me and pointed at the black table. On it rested two more notes. Resting on the notes was a bloody knife. MY bloody knife, the one that I threw at the Zyrinth. It was clear from the look on Austin’s face that he hadn’t put it there.

Impatient beyond belief I stormed over and read the notes.

Blood written note…

Golden ink note…

The blood note said, “You will have a knife stained with your blood very soon…”

The golden note said, “You will have a knife stained with your blood very soon…”

Up until that point Austin and I had determined that the blood notes were clearly from some evil. Logically, the golden note was good. Yet, there it was promising pain and possibly death along with the evil note. How strange? It honestly reminded me of a bi-polar ex-girlfriend I once had…(F--- You Grace!)

At this point Austin handed me a laptop.

”You are going to write down these events. It is important for us to remember, and possibly for others to read. Every time we encounter something add a description.”

I nodded at him understanding the value of a written account of the events that transpired.

The rest of the day was quiet. We went to sleep early and were sure that no more surprises awaited us…WELL DAMN was I wrong!

[Creaking]

[Silently Footsteps]

[Crashing noise in the other room]

I vaulted out of bed hearing those noises just wearing my boxers, and ran into Austin’s room. What I saw there was DEFINITELY a HUGE surprise. Standing behind Austin with a knife at his throat was a girl.

She looked at me, ”Who the hell are you two! Why did you bring me here?!”

I could tell that her breathing was quick.

“It is okay my name is Kato that guy who you are about to kill is Austin. I see that door to the room you woke up in. The same thing happened to us just let the knife down and we can help you.”

As skeptical as she must have been, she still let him go. Austin backpedaled away from me and ran out to my room.

Closing the door after him I notice for the first time what this girl looks like. HOLY HELL this girl was sexy. About 5’10”, Blonde hair, ice blue eyes…Perfect skin and body. She was easily 11/10. I guess it was a bad habit to check out hot girls who try to murder your friend. I then realized I was just wearing my boxers. CRAP!

”My name is Josie. What has happened to me?”

For the next hour I filled Josie in with every detail. She went to see her reflection too and was surprised, and clearly not too upset.

She came back out looking shy all of a sudden. I realized finally that she had probably taken a look at my body too after she realized the change that happened to her.

“I’m really sorry about all of this. I think I will go rest today, you gave me a lot to think about.”

I turned around to go back outside to talk to Austin when she calls back, ”Kato”

”Yeah?”

She blushes, ”You look good in boxers…” She then rushed to her room and closed the door.

Sexy, almost murderess, confident, all of the things I liked.

Walking back out to the kitchen where Austin had retreated I filled him in on most of what transpired, leaving out the boxer comment. He and I were both curious about how many people there would be. As well as why were all the same age.

Topic swayed back to the notes and Austin had an idea.

”We need to train with all those weapons.”

I look at him nervously, ”We have NO IDEA what we are doing though; we are going to hurt ourselves.”

”Kato, it doesn’t matter. We have weird ass monsters to fight and magical-note threats.”

…Good point...

I looked at him again saying, ”Fine it makes sense and maybe we will unlock some other mysteries about ourselves.”

We all went to sleep that night after grabbing some pizza. The next day was the first of many coming training days.

I woke up last the next day to find Josie making Austin and me some food. (Insert sexist joke here, just kidding). We ate a decent meal now that we had someone who was actually useful in the cabin. We lounged around telling Josie about our training plans and she agreed she was joining in. It seemed she had resigned herself to being a part of this group.

We all go to get changed into something more adept for training. I personally put on some gym shorts and a tight T-shirt. Austin came in with basically the same thing. We decide to go wait for Josie in the War Room. We were browsing over some items when she walks in. Girl-obsessed-boy-syndrome kicked right on in. Josie, as before, was stunning. Over the next week I became used to it, but it was still shocking.

The decision was made that each of us should choose a primary weapon, which complements each other’s weapon. Austin decided to choose the bow/crossbow. Good choice because he could provide support. I decided to go for an interesting sword/gun combo. Sword for close brawling and a gun because, in all seriousness, who doesn’t want a gun when fighting the supernatural freaks. Josie chose a two-handed spear. Her choice made me feel better knowing she would at least be able to keep things at a distance.

The training begins! It became apparent quickly that we were naturals at weaponry. Every shot I fired at the targets hit the bull’s eye, same with Austin. Josie was twirling that spear around like a damn baton and it was attractive to see a dangerous girl. My practice with the sword was much the same.

As we trained more and more with different weapons we found that we had a knack for each, as if we were coded to use them. Another key fact is that none of us tired. We were all magically in great shape but that still shouldn’t prevent ANY exhaustion. We were machines though. Never quickening our breath, it was incredible.

Then we heard the crash in the front of the house…

I turned around looking at Austin. Although we had an encounter with the Zyrinth, we still had not expected to have our place broken into. Austin and Josie had been taking a break, they each grabbed their choice weapons. Austin clutched his crossbow with white-knuckles in the back while Josie had her spear ready behind me. I, of course, was in the front with a snub-nosed revolver in my left hand, and a steel short sword in my right.

We heard the noises again coming from the entryway, we leapt around the corner expecting the worst, weapons ready only to find!....Puppies?

What the hell. There were three puppies. Two of them were black labs and one a German Shepard. What was even stranger was that one of the black labs had a streak of metallic gold across its back, with ice blue eyes. The other black lab was TOO black, like a shadow, with eyes the same shade. The German Shepard struck me the most. It had an entirely golden coat with a streak of black across its back, like my hair...and the eyes were the same color as mine.

Josie looked and added, "Guys, I think that there is one for each of us. They match us almost perfectly.”

I looked closer and she was right. ”Yeah, well you two do what you want I am going to go make a new friend.”

The next 30 minutes consisted of us playing with the puppies because let’s face it…Magically colored and delivered puppies are something special. (Obviously). Yet, as with the rest of our new lives, what was marginally normal could not last.

There was a loud pop and guess what that mean?! If you guessed two more notes on the table trying to fuck with our minds you were correct! As before one was written in blood and one in golden ink. The puppies and the notes within the same hour clearly wasn’t a coincidence so the questioned remained, why?

Walking over to the notes the puppies seemed to shy away.

The note written in blood, ”Cute creatures are they not? Oh? What is that? You are surprised that I find them cute? How foolish of you to think it is their looks or size. It is what they will become that I will find enjoyable. Creatures of power, destruction. They will be controlled by you of course. As always, thank you for the gift of your service. Steel might not work out to well tomorrow by the way…”

Austin looked at me clearly nervous, ”Dude that is NOT ok. This guy is crazy.”

Ignoring him I go to read the other note.

”I see you have found my gift to you. There is no way of you knowing, but arranging that gift took a great deal. I did it because I think it is necessary for you to have companions other than each other. Who knows how long that will last?”

I scowled at the note and said to my friends, ”What worries me is the last sentence. I don’t think it just means we will die. I think it means something else, but of course he/she/it didn’t tell us.”

Up until that point Josie had been silent but she suddenly said, ”It is clear that we are meant to train these as well. The problem is that they are too small. I vote we go to sleep and think it over. By the way you guys forgot about the “Steel isn’t important and I am an asshole blah blah blah” portion of the blood note.”

That got Austin and I to smirk and we agreed and went to sleep. I wish we hadn’t.

The next day waking up seemed normal. I was the first to wake up, which after that day was a regular occurrence for some random reason. I decided not to disturb the others so I went to get myself a drink of water. (Seems too normal for a mutated 18 year old right?). I walk into the kitchen and almost flip the hell out. My puppy, was not a puppy. It had grown fully into a lean beast. It still was friendly, it came up to me licking me and wagging its tail. It was clearly tough though, and when I pet the golden fur it was soft as ever yet I had a feeling that something was different about it.

At that point Josie had woken up and came in to have the same experience, shortly followed by Austin. We decided the dogs should have names.

My dog – Hyperion

Austin’s – Hades

Josie’s – Athena

If you didn’t catch on we all happened to love old Greek and Roman mythology so it seemed to fit.

With that business at hand we thought that eating out might be a good idea, but we left our dogs there. It probably would attract a LOT of attention. Walking outside our second big surprise of the day hit us. We weren’t in Pittsburgh anymore.

We were in NYC in an apartment on Times Square. Well time to go back inside again and freak out. We rush back inside and have another group discussion which consisted of Austin yelling like a madman, Josie getting pissed off at what was happening, and me generally ignoring their discussion while I pondered what to do next.

Josie was in the midst of calling Austin a raging cry-baby (Fairly apt description I thought at the time), but I interrupted saying, ”Guys it was obvious we were moving. We were given a gift to protect us and the blood-note-asshole said steel would not work. It makes sense.”

They were both quiet clearly wanting me to continue with a plan. I guess I was the leader, I did have the most unique start and my dog was different etc. I also just felt like I was a natural at it.

”This is what we are going to do…”

That night we ventured out of the apartment with our dogs. It was about 1am when we left and we were basically wandering around looking for trouble and/or hoping it would find us. That proved easy. Austin and I went down a dark alley to check it out while Josie kept watch. We found nothing, but walking back out we found 5 guys knocked unconscious on the ground and a 6th being chased in a circle by Athena. Josie smiled at us and said, ”I guess they didn’t think I was serious when I said no.” (Talk about being cock-blocked HOLY SHIT).

We kept walking until we found another alley. This one looked like all the other, but I could feel something about it. Josie and Austin didn’t seem to think much of it so I guess I was sensitive or something. Stopping, we peered into the looming darkness. We fell into formation. I was in front with Hyperion beside me. Josie behind me, and Austin in the back. We finally pulled out the weapons we had chosen to bring.

Because of the “Steel won’t suffice” crap we decided to bring different stuff. I stood in the front with a Warhammer in my hands made of steel (I mean it can still smash shit even it is steel). I also carried two daggers sheathed at my sides. One made of Silver and one of Gold. Behind me stood Josie with a Trident, each of the three prongs was a different metal. One was Silver, one Bronze, and one Gold. Austin stood with his ever present bow. He had a slotted quiver on his back. Each section was separated based on metal type and he had everything. Gold tip, Silver, tip, Bronze tip, Steel tip, and 3 other metals we still had yet to identify.

I stalked into the alley barely being able to see. Over the past days we had all noticed our senses sharpening drastically so I was not worried about sight. Just using my hearing I could tell what we around me. I heard a soft swishing noise and yelled, ”DUCK!”

As we dropped a creature soared over us and landed behind us. It was a giant centipede! Well, not quite. It was dark and made out of what looked like a metal. We all turned to face it when we heard a metallic hiss behind us only to find 4 more in the alley. Not. Good.

I think rapidly, ”Austin handle that one back there. Josie we need to hold these off until Austin can help us.” Surprisingly Austin actually didn’t argue with me about strategy, and he turned around nocking 3 arrows. One silver, gold, and bronze. I whirl around and saw Josie already charging one with Athena right behind her. I was worried for our dogs, but I was hoping there was something special to them. I was not disappointed.

Athena leapt at the closest monsters (By the way these are called Ystyrites). The dog had grown suddenly. It had become the size of a small horse, and had massive claws on its feet and fangs to match. They looked to me made of one of the metals we had not identified. Specifically the one which was a dull white and seemed to glow softly. Athena got a swipe and one of the Ystyrites shattered violently, but another sprang towards Athena’s exposed side. I saw razor sharp teeth in its mouth and I thought that Josie’s dog-think was done for. That was until Athena’s fur seemed to harden. It turned into ARMOR. The monster did scratch a shallow wound into Athena, but it didn’t seem to bother the dog much.

I was tired of waiting so I plunged ahead. I swung my hammer vertically at a lightning-fast speed onto an Ystyrite. It moved, but not fast enough, I caught the left side of the creature and it splattered. Hyperion followed up with claws made of the same glowing metal, which seemed to go through the creature’s armor like it was warm butter. Josie had handled the other two and we turned around to see Austin standing there with an arrow knocked. It was also made of the same metal that our dogs had used with their claws. Only after the action was over did we light up our flashlights and found something extraordinary.

The Ystyrite’s body was actually armor made up of another metal we had with us but not identified. It was the antithesis of the white, glowing metal. It was a red so dark it was almost black. It also seemed to drain the color out of everything close to it. We now called the dark metal Ysyrite and the white metal Gyrmore.

Our gods were back to their normal friendly selves and we ventured home to rest.

We walked into the door around 3:28am. I walked in first prepared to relax but when I opened the door and walked in I was shocked… There was a man waiting for us. A man made of shadow. When he spoke…I heard a deep guttural voice.
