Nursing school killed my keto vibes keto

Hey Everyone! So as the title eludes to I am currently in nursing school. I do about 90 hours a week of combined school, clinicals, and studying. I did keto for about a month and rocked it until clinicals started. I don't always have access to a refrigerator or a microwave and sometimes i wasn't even allowed to take a lunch (psych-wards). I did at that point discover quest bars and was doing the bulletproof coffee on days that I didn't have time to cook breakfast. In addition to those I sometimes drink the premier protein shakes. They have 160 calories, 2 net carbs, and 30 grams of protein. So my question is what are some foods that will help me with this that I can meal prep with. Also, do you have any advice to help me integrate my nursing schedule better with my keto lifestyle.

Starting out and have some questions unique to my work situation keto

Morning all, first off Keto seems like something I definitely would love to try. I don't love exercising, and although I walk a crap-ton and eat relatively healthily, I eat a lot. I'm 24/290lb/6"3

I think I understand the gist of ketosis (Please correct me if I am wrong). Eat under 20%-30% of your daily intake of NET carbs (Total carbs minus total fiber?) and your body goes through the metabolic process called Ketosis, which instead of burning carbs for energy it burns body fat (yay!). Takes about a day or two of eating low carb foods for ketosis to take effect, eat too many carbs in a day and your out of ketosis.

I have a unique job in that I travel almost 3 or 4 weeks a month. Some of the hotels I stay in do not have refrigerators. Is it possible to stay in ketosis while only eating out?

The other this is alcohol. I, like many people my age love to drink. Is Ketosis possible while still being able to drink on Fridays/Saturdays? If I can't drink beer anymore, fine. I usually just drink beer, whisky, scotch, and tequila.

Also, does anyone have a handy chart of low carb foods vs high carb? I was going to make one up of food I like but didn't know if there were any you recommend. Any other tips/tricks are welcome :)

Thanks in advance!

Coconut milk keto

Does anyone know the difference between the coconut milks? For example at Trader Joe's there is one that is refrigerated and there is one that is not. Same thing at Costco. I see one by the Breeze brand in the refrigerator and there is also different brand in cartons that are not refrigerated.

And then there is the coconut milk in cans.

I know the obvious difference in the flavored ones but those taken out of the question what are differences between the clean unflavored ones. I have checked the labels and there some caloric differences, some carbs differences (nothing significant), most don't have sugar added, and mainly there are a few ingredient differences but they are all chemistry names and I have no idea what they are and how determine which is better.

Having brought up the ingredients, I know coconut milk is naturally found in nature and has to be processed but are there any that are really clean, very little ingredients, without so many chemicals in the ingredients that I don't understand?

Advice for precooking bacon on Sunday for use M-F keto

Like a lot of us, I eat bacon everyday. For purposes of saving time I would like to get into the habit of cooking a bunch on Sunday to have it ready for the week. Has anybody done this and found it less tasty this way?

What are the best methods for doing this? My skillet could hold a handful of slices at a time, or I could cook it on a sheet in the oven. Also, would it keep in the refrigerator from Sunday to Friday, or would I have to put some in the freezer? I have seen on amazon a variety of bacon cookers, so if anyone has good experience with these please let me know.

Central Texas Get Together keto

Hello keto friends. I would like to have a get together of keto friends!!!! I can reserve the Alamo Recreation Center from the city of Austin for Sunday November 12th from 1:00PM to 5:00PM. It is located at 2100 Alamo St. Austin, TX 78722. I have no idea if this is a good part of town or bad part of town. I picked it because it has plenty of tables, a refrigerator, a stove and a microwave.

I thought we could do a potluck Sunday lunch. Everyone can show off their keto cooking skills. I can rent the community center and get plastic plates and utensils along with Redneck Champagne Flutes (Solo Cups). I can even make a side dish. I will get some stickers so we can write the macros on the dish so we know what we are eating. I can get name tags and we can use our reddit names and/or our real names. Maybe even take a group picture.
By doing this in November, I thought a big get together might help us "gird our loins" for the holidays. PLEASE let me know soon if you folks think this is a do-able thing. I would like to get the community center rented as soon as possible.

Easiest Snacks For Work? keto

Hello!

I've been doing keto for a few weeks, and the biggest issue I'm having is what to eat to snack on. I'm much less hungry and am getting full faster. Even more unusually (for me), I can go 12-24 hours without eating before I feel the first twinges of weak hunger. I also only typically get one 15 minute break at work, which means I don't have time to really throw down.

It IS affecting my concentration and such before I eat again, though, so I'd like some snack ideas!

Some Things To Consider:

  1. I work in a grocery store, so if it's something I can pick up on my way to break, that would be even better!
  2. We have refrigerators and microwaves, if needed.

Thanks! :)

[Pics] Pictures my Mom Takes of Me - 300 Days ago I was 300 pounds. (Long Winded) keto

First of all I don't post on reddit, but I frequently stalk all of you beautiful kind people here at r/keto. I wanted to share my story with you.

I've never cared to actively draw attention to myself, unfortunately, my absent father's genetics were far from absent in my pubescent years meaning I've grown to be a 6'4" member of those social elites gifted with the ability to see dust on top of refrigerators.

Being this tall was already plenty to keep me from being able to fly under the radar of the many cruel youths that roam the halls of sleepy small town public school. Add on to my chandelier-forehead-smashing height the fact that I had size thirteen feet before I had even lived thirteen years.

On top of that, puberty hit me like a truck, and by truck I mean like a dump truck full of hair. When kids were showing off their first arpit hairs I already had my shoulders filling in nicely.

So there you have a young adult sasquatch trying to avoid detection from the poachers wielding rifles loaded with insecurity and fear. What could possibly make hiding more difficult for that self-conscious teen monster?

Fat Giant Hairy Kid.

I've been overweight a lot of my life. When I was eleven I had the first of two surgeries that involved sawing each of my femurs in half and screwing them back together. Unlike my youthful expectations, this procedure was not to give me bionic legs with the ability to leap over buildings and win track meets to impress girls, in fact it temporarily turned my legs as useless as a hat underwater. I ended up quitting all my physical activities because I was embarrassed about falling behind.

This was the start of a not-so-beautiful katamari tumbling and gaining momentum. The pounds came fast. I've been obese for most of the time that I've been actively making memories.

When I started Keto as my New Years Resolution this year I honestly don't know what I expected, certainly not for it to work as well as it did. This has been both far simpler than I ever anticipated, while also being one of the most challenging and fulfilling things I've ever done.

When I started I was a big boy consistently adjacent to that 300 pound mark. You can just see in the picture that at that point I was more beast than man. Eyes glossed over with that carby glaze. Shovelling bread into my mouth like it's going to smother the smoldering self-loathing that coats my insides.

My mother took that picture of me, and I hated it. I hated every picture of me, I could never look at myself without cringing and seeing all the things that the other people saw. I've always had a huge mental barrier between myself and photogtaphs that pushed me to avoid any documentation that made real how physically different I look to what my brain feels inside.

My mother took a lot of pictures of me on our trip to egypt at the end of 2016, I had read about Keto that summer and talked to my girlfriend about trying it, expecting this to be just another thing I talk about and consider but don't follow through on. Those pictures though, they just got to me. Here I had gone on this amazing trip across the world, and I didn't anyone to see any of the pictures. It just felt like a giant monument to how much I had let things get out of control.

I started Keto January 1st 2017, hard. My girlfriend did most of the legwork when it came to recipes and shoping lists. I'm hugely grateful to her, and to all of you. for the support and motivation to just do the dang thing.

I started at 302 lbs, 44 pant size, xxxl shirt. I'm currently 190ish, 33 pant size, large shirt, and honestly I stopped checking the scale. The mirror brings me more than enough joy now to keep me going.

I think the most unexpectedly huge change has been psychological. At long last, I like what I see when I see myself. I can finally genuinely look the way I want to when I buy new clothes. My mind is finally finding a synchronicity with my identity that's giving me confidence-gains such that I could swear I'm just intravenously connected to Dwayne the Rock Johnson's ego.

My mother took another picture of me today while she was visiting for Canadian Thanksgiving. It's finally really set in what I've accomplished. The fact that I can see a picture of myself without cringing fills me with so much glee that it's pouring out into this keyboard.

I'm sorry, I've been rambling, I just really wanted to thank you guys for helping me, and share a bit of myself with you. Thanks to you, I can finally renegotiate my relationship with cameras away from being one of fear and anxiety.

And, of course, for those of you who actually value your time

TL;DR - I was fat, now I'm not. Please validate this fragile section of my growing ego. Pics

First time......99 mg/dl ! keto

I'm a T2D who started on strict Keto July 20,2017. My last A1C was 7.0 which upset me so much I abandoned my two trial of a vegetarian, low fat, low cal, exercise driven lifestyle. Looking for answers i discovered KETO.I cleaned out my refrigerator and kitchen cupboards so I had only low carb food.(and bought 2 books by DR JASON FUNG) Today I hit a milestone in my fight with T2D. I hit 99 mg/dl 4 hours after eating !! I have never seen a number this low before(I measure 1x week on Fridays just before dinner. We eat 2x day lunch and dinner). The purpose of this post is to shout my accomplishment but even more.....to shout to others with T2D. Learn the ins and out of a low carb lifestyle and you can do this too ! KOKO. !

Suggestions for hurricane keto? keto

Hurricane Nate passing through soon, there's the possibility we'll lose power for a while. What suggestions do you have for staying on keto given so much of our diet is in the refrigerator?

At least for myself, I've got water, nuts, jerky, peanut butter, and a few faux-carby things (low carb tortillas, protein bars). I'll probably load up on fats before the storm picks up as well.

Best way to get fat w/o a refrigerator? I already have pepperoni, sardines, pork rinds. Sometimes I just need to add more fat. keto

I'm not talking about protein AND fat like nuts or pepperoni. Any non perishable fat suggestions? Edit: I'm thinking more things to have while away from home, not to cook with at home.

Headed to a conference-- what can I take to eat? keto

Hi everyone. I'm headed to a three day conference early next week and am trying to figure out what I can take to eat that I don't have to put in a refrigerator and can eat on the go.

I'm thinking some beef jerky, almonds/nuts, a few avocados, and a few pieces of fruit.

What else can I bring??? They are providing some food, but I don't want to mess up my progress or get sick because I eat something I shouldn't on this diet.

Thanks in advance.

Some observations one month into my keto journey keto

I started keto about one month ago. I've been combining it with IF and daily walking and I'm down around 20 lbs. (I started at about 280 and I'm trying to lose a hundred pounds before my wedding in 13 months.) Go me. A few things I've noticed - a lot of this is probably old info for most here, but it's new and fascinating to me, so I thought I'd share:

  1. Keto seems to be a calorie restriction where your diet suppresses your appetite. Not only this, but the restrictive nature of the foods you're permitted forces you to be constantly mindful of your eating habits. No more mindlessly opening the refrigerator door. This, more so I think than ketosis, is the strength of the diet, and it's a quality that I find lends itself very well to IF.

  2. My cravings for things sweet have dissipated dramatically. I didn't have much of a sweet tooth before, but it's completely gone now. I do miss beer and the occasional pizza (I know about fathead pizza, but for me, the crust has always been kind of an essential part of pizza, and poor substitutions are exactly that).

  3. Variety is difficult. I have my staples - mostly salad versions of my favorite foods without their ordinary carbs. My favorite (and I can't speak highly enough about this) is Sushi Bowl. It's a recipe of my own creation, and I could eat it every week. It's spicy tuna (chopped up raw ahi tuna with mayo, lemon juice, sesame oil, and Splenda), shrimp, and any other raw fish (used barbecued eel once which was great but has a few carbs), julienned cucumber and red pepper, strips of nori (seaweed), avocado, and some soy sauce over chopped iceberg lettuce. It's amazing and totally satisfies my sushi craving without 18 lbs of rice.

  4. Wow can I not hold my liquor. There's little to say here - I'm sure anyone on this subreddit who enjoys an occasional libation has discovered the dangerous truth. Over-indulgence in alcohol can be brutal on keto. A recent night out with some friends and one too many vodka sodas with a splash of cran (oh just typing those words releases a flood of emotions) gave me a hangover I haven't experienced since college. That's a mistake I won't repeat.

  5. My biggest concern is what happens after. I have no doubt that if I keep doing what I'm doing, I can lose the weight. But I don't want to or think I could do keto as a permanent lifestyle. At some point, I want to be able to eat - not like I used to - but like a normal, fit person. Low carb diets are infamous for dieters quickly putting all their weight back after the diet. I suppose that's a problem I can work on when I'm skinny-me.

Well thanks for reading. I've lurked around this sub for a while, and the folks here are super motivating. Very happy to be making the plunge.

I have an empty fridge and $100 for groceries keto

Husband and I just got back from our honeymoon and are ready to get back on the keto wagon after two weeks of eating pretty much everything.

The refrigerator is basically an empty, clean slate. We only have condiments and cheese in there. I have about $100 I can spend on food right now for the two of us.

I usually have a goal of trying to "use up" what we have in the fridge but this is a rare opportunity to be intentional with grocery choices.

What would you buy?

[FP] [Pics] DARK CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER MOUSSE PIE - 2 G Net Carbs! http://ift.tt/2wyM5cn keto

http://ift.tt/2wyM5cn

Pretty happy with how these came out!!!

DARK CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER MOUSSE PIE RECIPE

Makes 12 Pies – 2 Net Carbs – 27 g fat – 8 g protein – 285 calories

Dark Chocolate Crust: Ingredients 2 cups almond flour (use sunflower seed flour for nut allergy) 1/8 teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons butter 1 egg 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/2 cup Swerve or erythritol or 1/2 teaspoon pure stevia extract

Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  1. Add all ingredients into a food processor and process until smooth.

  2. Grease tart/quiche mold – I use this handy 2 pack, also good for making cloud bread biscuits etc.: http://ift.tt/2v9E0Ha

  3. Bake 10-12 minutes. Time varies by oven, check frequently after 10 min in my opinion as these can burn easily. Burnt they still taste good they just get really hard, which actually turns out ok for a nice overly crunchy crust if you want it.

  4. Cool completely before adding filling.

Filling:

4 oz. Cream Cheese, set in room temp. for 2 hours (less if using whipped) I prefer temptee 1/2 cup (8 tbsp) crunchy or smooth peanut butter or almond butter (or other substitute if nut allergy) 5 g organic stevia powder or equivalent powdered sweetener 12 tbsp heavy whipping cream 2 tbsp truvia or equivalent amount of granulated sweetener 10 drops stevia vanilla (or ½ tsp of vanilla if you want)

  1. In a small mixing bowl add heavy whipping cream, truvia (granulated sugar) and vanilla. Beat with mixer, high-speed, until whipped to form firm peaks. Cover and chill in refrigerator until ready to use.

  2. In a medium size mixing bowl add stevia (powdered sweetener), peanut butter and cream cheese. Beat with mixer, on low-speed increasing to high-speed, until ingredients are well mixed (about 2 minutes).

  3. With a large spatula or wooden spoon fold 1/3, at a time, of chilled whipping cream into peanut butter mixture until smooth. Fold or mix lightly by hand, do not use power mixer it will over mix.

  4. Add peanut butter mixture evenly to crusts. Cover and chill in refrigerator for min. 2 hours. Enjoy!

Boyfriend's birthday; what do you think? keto

So, my boyfriend's birthday is coming up soon and he's also going back to college Friday. He's been wanting to get back into keto, so for his birthday I thought i would get him some small snack food type things to get him on the right track at school. Here is everything I got, excluding some refrigerator items: Baybel cheese, salami & cheese packs, provolone & prosciutto stuffed peppers, and chicken teriyaki skewers.

Is there anything else you would recommend? Anything I should exclude? Thank you!!

68-year-old male on a journey and needs a little help keto

Today I started the Ketos diet. I'm going to first start out on my breakfast which is the biggest meal of the day and I'm only going to eat between 9 AM and 5 PM. I think doing this will cut off about 1500 cal and about 125 carbs per day because I eat a very big breakfast. Here's where I need some help on making Carbquik waffles the waffle is 16 g of carbs. And I do not know what this sugar-free syrup is. Now here's what I'm asking I want to look for a recipe to make waffles that I can put in a container put it in the refrigerator and use it through the week just make it one time and serve or I can make a bunch of waffles and put them in the freezer. I do not like the recipe for waffles with four or five eggs in it. about me I'm a 68-year-old man and I have a carb habit. I weigh about 300 pounds and want to get down to 250 by Christmas Will help I just need to tackle the breakfast first and the fasting

[FP] Pumpkin Fudge (aka fat bomb) keto

First off, I apologize for no photo. I'm going to make another batch this weekend, so I will get a photo up in a day or two. Secondly, this is a good addition to a lunch if you need a boost of fat and if you're a big fan of pumpkin.

Pumpkin Fudge Serves 12

  • 13oz Coconut Butter
  • 1 can Pumpkin (Puree)
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp Other pumpkin pie spices: nutmeg, ginger, allspice
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/3 cup Stevia (or your preferred 0 calorie sweetener)
  • 12 Pecans
  1. Have a 15x9" baking dish set aside. Place a pot on the stove, medium heat. Empty the jar of coconut butter (also called creamed coconut) into the pot. Let this melt completely.

  2. Add in the vanilla, cinnamon, spices, salt, and Stevia. Stir.

  3. Open the can of pumpkin puree, turn off the stove, and add to the pot. It's going to firm up fast, so stir until its all combined!

  4. Dump your mixture into the baking dish and spread it out. Once it's all about level, add your pecans. I use them to mark my squares, so each square gets one pecan.

  5. Place into the refrigerator for 15 minutes or until it's firm. Cut into 12 squares.
