I love falling asleep to the sound of my refrigerator CasualConversation

I live in a one person studio and my refrigerator is a short distance from my bed. When it's on it creates a superchill low hum and the water circulation sounds like it's raining. I especially love falling asleep/dozing off when it's raining outside so for me the "noise" my refrigerator makes is not bothersome at all, quite the contrary actually. Do you guys have any "noises" or sounds you love nodding off to?

Edit: this is my first time posting to this Sub and I just received automated modmail informing me I have to react to top comments within three hours. Only problem is I'm nodding off as I type :') Maybe the mods can forgive me and the post will still be up, in that case I'm looking forward to reading your reactions and discussing tomorrow. But for now, ciao!

Has anyone ever had a very terrifying, vivid nightmare that scared you for years? CasualConversation

I had one that haunted me when I was like 13 or so but I remember in my dream, I was hanging out on my back porch with my family at night, for literally no reason. We didn't talk to each other and we were just kind of chilling and all of a sudden, I see these floating spheres in the sky making different colors and they were chasing each other around in a circle. Then these spheres got extremely close to us, like inches away from our faces, they were small, chrome balls. They were floating all around us and made this sort of like wormhole in the air and sucked up things. After that they disappeared. Next thing you know, I go out in the front and I see a giant floating house with these large eyes and it had this mouth as well. I ran in the street and it was just chasing after me. It shot out these weird rays of light. And I ran to an empty hospital, I ran to this room that had a refrigerator, in it were strawberries and pumpkin pie, I know that is so random but I remember I did that in my dream. Anyways, I ate those and ran back out and ran to this unknown house and tried to call someone on the phone, and then I had this crazy flashback while on the house phone about a relative who seemed to have turned into a cyborg, and said something like "This is who I am now" and had this sort of blank face and started swimming in this large pool. I then see a random dude I never met before tell me that one of my family members is dead, and then they suddenly vanished, I ran back outside and saw the house very close to me, ready to emit this mysterious light at me and that was the end of it. I woke up with my heart beating very fast on my bed at like 3 am and my mom was asleep. I was relieved to know that was just a nightmare. This all may not seem like a typical nightmare or something that's scary to people but keep in mind I was 13, so that was very scary to me at the time. This all seems very random but is legit. Anyone else have a terrifying nightmare that scared them for years?

Vent: I feel like I've upset everyone CasualConversation

It seems like all the women in my life are mad at me. I broke up with my gf of 1.5 years, and she’s coping by being mad at me for it. Some angry text and some social media passive aggressive comments. I don’t really blame her honestly, it’s just a weird feeling to be the asshole ex bf.

Then I got into a fight with my ex-wife (baby momma) over my daughters feeding habits. For the past month and a half her refrigerator has been broken and she’s been taking her out for fast food nearly every day. I brought it up to her several times that it was concerning me, especially considering we were both overweight and diabetic. This finally peeked last week when I told her I’ve been keeping a list of what my daughter tells me she’s been eating when she’s with her which includes a lot Mcd’s, pizza, taco bell, etc. She took that as a threat and made a big scene when I went to pick up my daughter (at McDonalds -_-). I guess we’re not on speaking terms since she ignores my text now which are all concerning my daughter.

And finally, I guess the big one. My sisters and my mom. I moved back in with parents a little over a year ago to help out my sick mom. I basically sleep on the couch and don’t really have a room but pay rent and help around the house. I have a brother, who was very physically abusive to me when we were kids but when I hit puberty the abuse stopped. His kids live with us (boy 13 and girl 11) but he moved in with his gf and never really comes home. When he picks up the kids to take them out on the weekends he just pulls into the driveway and calls them to come out. He doesn’t want to confront my mom or dad. My parents went out on vacation for two weeks and when he found he started coming home and making himself comfortable. Bringing in his gf, using the washer and dryer and cooking and then leaving the mess in the house. I confronted him, told him he can’t just come home because my parents are gone and he especially can’t come and just leave his mess and I called him a coward for not coming when my parents are home especially knowing my mom is sick. This angered him and he took a swing at me and almost immediately my younger brother ran and put him in a choke hold to stop him from getting violent. All that commotion got the attention of my sister who assumed we were all just fighting like animals even though I never threw a single punch. Since I’m usually known as the “smart responsible” brother it seemed like the blame was put solely on me. When my mom returned from her trip she told me how much of a fuck-up I am and that she can’t believe I would be fighting with family even though I explained to her that I never hit anyone and that all I did was tell him the truth, I still stand by my words I have no regrets in what I told him. But she’s been back for a week now and she’s still not talking to me. My other sister that doesn’t live with us even called me to tell me that she is so disappointed with me and would have never expected me to start a fight with my own family. My dad asked me what happened between me and my brother and he told me I did good, and he was ok with what I told him and believed me when I told him I never hit him even after he took the first swing at me, so I guess I have one person’s support.

I guess all of this is just stressful, my mind is everywhere and I just needed to vent.

Self Reflecting on my actions CasualConversation

Just wanted to tell someone and brag about it a little bit if it's okay :'j

But anyways about 1-2 weeks ago I had bought a little drink to ship to an international friend of mines and left it in the refrigerator until I decided to finally package and ship it. Few days past and I came to check if someone touched or drunk it.. AND OF COURSE! Somebody took a sip LIKE C'MON!!!!!!!

Angry I just threw it back in the fridge and thought about it. I thought about what to do next and things lead to another and I think to myself haven't I done this before? I usually always tell and remind myself that if you live in with family (and in my case it's a big big household) expect to share your food and things! but of course I don't take my siblings food..Nah of course not!

..Actually, I do! I realized and BAM just like that all my anger dissipated. I don't feel any hatred but in fact I think, "Ahh, whatever. It's fine," with a smile on my face. I decide it's all right and I'll just buy more if I need to~

This sort of self reflection I love and revel in. It's so fulfilling and it's a stepping stone to showing progress to my own personal growth but yeah! Thanks for reading XD even if it was way too detailed for something so minor!

I just realized that two separate business acquaintances have left items in my refrigerator that they intend to retrieve, but have yet to do so. CasualConversation

My house sitter left a bottle of Tequila, and my cleaning lady left a bag of vegetables another client gave her. They both told me they'd be over to pick up their things the next day, but neither showed up. Anything unusual or odd going on with you?

Anyone else feel they have unfair treatment where they work? CasualConversation

Sorry in advance for the long rant of my shitty job. So almost 3 months ago, I caught an interview to be an administrative assistant at a small environmental company. Group of people came in but was rather easy interview considering the interviewee (manager) did most of the talking about the job itself since there was a vague description of it on the job posting. She said I would have the basic administrative duties of answer phones and other office shit, along with driving out and doing errands for the company like picking up construction permits. Now, she also said that along with that I would have to sweep here or there and wipe counters down if they get dirty and that everyone does their part around the office to keep clean. I thought no problem, I do my job, I clean a little here or there since we had a cleaner come in every week anyway, cool.

Two weeks in, our cleaner get either fired or quit and my manager tells me that I would be responsible for the cleaning the whole office from now on. So along with sweeping the floor and wiping down my desk, I also have to:

  • Mop the kitchen and large meeting room
  • Wipe down everyone desks and tables (8 not including myself)
  • Vacuum the office carpet
  • Clean our 2 refrigerators
  • Empty and replace our main garbage and everyone's waste basket
  • Clean all windows and window sills
  • Cleaning up after our boss when he cooks
  • Clean anything that's dirty including the bathrooms

Everything has to be done on a weekly basis, and the bulk of the cleaning has to be done on a Friday which means staying 1-2 hours after closing to clean everything. Basically, I'm doing janitor's work after our cleaner left with no extra pay. And yeah that talk during the interview about everyone doing their part keeping the office clean, bullshit, or at the very least very over exaggerated. All everyone really does is clean up after themselves after they eat but other than that I'm basically the administrative assistant/courier/janitor.

What pisses me off is that we have interns working here, and out of all the people that can atleast HELP me is them, but nope. According to my manager, this was the job I accepted so I could take it or leave it despite the fact that the extra cleaning was not what I initially signed for.

Everyone I talked to about says that my job is a load of bullshit and treats me unfair and that I should quit so right now I'm just looking for other jobs that could hopefully take me out of this one. Anyone else have shit from their current jobs they're trying to get out of?

TL;DR - Job said I'd have office duties, some driving, and some cleaning. After 2 weeks of working there, I'm basically the new cleaner and trying to quit for the unfair treatment.

I've noticed that I often don't finish a snack or meal that I order or make for myself CasualConversation

For example, I ordered a sandwhich on lunch and only ate 3/4 of it and now the rest is in the work refrigerator. This morning I ate most of my breakfast but there's some leftover in my car. What's this about?

Cold as in "left in the refrigerator over night" cold. I tried it because of all the hype surrounding cold pizzas and it tasted horrible.

Does anyone else work in a field that contradicts part of their way of life? CasualConversation

I majored in computer science and work in IT because I've always been good with computers and technology. I find some new technologies to be so cool. But part of me wishes the world could be a little more primitive. Get rid of smartphones that force you to be contactable by phone, text, email, Skype, and social media at all times and go back to phones that could just call and text. Get rid of laptops that force you to bring work home with you. Get rid of all these appliances that have freaking WiFi built into them and just get a normal refrigerator.

Another example...my girlfriend comes from a religious family, and is religious herself, but is getting her PhD in neuroscience and working in a freaking molecular biology lab. She reads hundreds of science papers on all sorts of shit, including evolution, and is like "Yeah, this makes total sense." But of course, Christianity teaches creationism and what not.

What amazes, inspires, astounds you about the world? CasualConversation

Here are some things that amaze/inspire/astound me and personal commentary on each. You can write however you want to express yourself. They can be tangible or intangible things.

  • Nature: I was looking at an image of a gorgeous Aurora Borealis, which I'd love to see in-person one day, and felt such awe imagining myself under that. Some things in nature are so beautiful I can hardly believe they are real. Yet they are and it's astounding for me to take in that fact.

  • Technology: It's incredible we have the ability to talk with someone on the other side of the world instantly. Communication that used to take months, maybe even years, now can happen in a flash. All the information, all the art we have access to. Cars, planes, refrigerators, Youtube, Reddit.. It's so overwhelming and fascinating to ponder.

  • Change: There is a memorable quote I really value which goes, "The only constant in life is change." I used to dread change, but as I expect more good and cultivate gratitude, I learn to appreciate it more for what my various experiences can teach me.

That's all for now. Looking forward to hearing your answers! :)

I got really excited over a refrigerator a few hours ago. CasualConversation

I had to go to Best Buy to pick up a USB cable, and I found myself looking at a really nice fridge. I don't usually care much for appliances and such but it was designed really neat, and had a water/ice dispenser, and even had an extra draw between the freezer and fridge parts where you could set a custom temperature to store different things! Not sure why, but it was just really cool to me! It cost $3500 though, which was way too much, haha.

Is there anything you guys have become enamored with that you aren't normally interested in?

I got a pretty gnarly cut on my leg today, and I have no-one to tell :D CasualConversation

So today we were digging up the floor of a basement with a diesel digger. The fumes from the engine were building up and we couldn't get hold of an extract fan. So being the creative thinkers we are, we took the fan out of an old refrigerator thing, and wired it up. Only problem is, it didn't have a guard on it. But it worked, so we carried on digging. After a while, I walked backwards and straight into the fan, the steel blades cutting through my wellies, trousers, and leg. Went to A&E and got it stitched up.

Picture (Probably NSFW)

Anyone been injured by your own clever/stupid ideas?

How do you drink your coffee? CasualConversation

I for one am a fan of drinking it black. I had a Keurig in my dorm in college and no refrigerator for awhile so was forced to use just sugar and no dairy creamer. I soon found the way the coffee tasted without them was far better and I've never gone back.

How do you like yours?

Received a call. I didn't recognize the number, but answered anyway expecting a telemarketer. Nope, I hear teen kids giggling and one immediately loses their nerve and says "Sorry, wrong number". Then the other yells "Is your refrigerator working?". I just said "You forgot to *67 before you called." And they hung up while laughing.

"Is your refrigerator working?"...sheesh, get it right kids.

Fast food work is the art of doing a billion things at once. That's what I did today. How was everyone else's day? CasualConversation

I used to weld, and fast food is a lot easier in a way because there isn’t all that much to remember. But it is kinda difficult.

First of all we’ve got 2 minutes to get the food out the door or else the managers get pissed. And we have the “drop then take” method. Before you work on a customer’s dog or burger or whatever you have to go to the fridge and pull out raw hot dogs or patties to replace it. And then you can start working on it the customer’s meal. Also some of our items take 4+ minutes to cook, like chicken wings and cheddar peppers.

This gets difficult when a bunch of orders start coming in and all the cooks are running around. And since the hot dogs are under the chest refrigerator I have to interrupt the grill-side cooks who are in front of it dressing the burgers. This saps even more of my time.

And since the other fridge is broken I have to run all the way back to the walk-in whenever someone orders onion rings, apple slices, or eggs. And of course since I’m on fryer side I’ve got to be dropping fries and tater tots the whole time, then running back to the fridge to get cold ones to fry on first drop, and then scooping the fries and such for the order, and if the car hops are busy help with bagging. Ugh.

Anyways how was your guys’ day? And what did you do?

Today would be my dad's 70th birthday. What bittersweet memories do you have? CasualConversation

Here's his picture: http://ift.tt/1UEIiQg

This picture was from the mid-late 2000s, and he died almost two years ago. He had MS and was a smoker, which probably was what did him in.

I still have a picture from when I was little of when he took me to Take Your Child to Work Day. I was hugging him. Well, more like his waist, since I was so little. He was a Vietnam Vet working for the Department of Veteran's affairs.

I'm not sure what my fondest memory of him was. He was always around, even though my grandparents raises me, and I still remember a lot of the quirks and habits he used to have. The way he said "Hullo!" when he walked in the door. The way he always put his extra large Pepsi cup from Wawa on top of the refrigerator. The fact that he visited almost every day.

I miss him.

I know a lot of people have lost one or both of their parents. I know that, in every other aspect of my life, I'm one of the luckiest people I know. But I would give back a lot of I could see him again.

Sorry for the rant. Tell me about your bittersweet memories. There are a lot of people on /r/CasualConversation. Hopefully, we can provide some support :-)

Let's talk about our places of residence. What's yours like? CasualConversation

Mine is a four room apartment, in a small apartment building. My apartment consists of a living room, a bedroom, a bathroom, and a dine-in kitchen. The only doors in the apartment are the entrance door, and the bathroom door. The building was built in 1927, so it's rather old.

The living room is where I spend the most time with friends - TV stand with game consoles, Buddhist altar under the window, coat rack in one corner, table and chairs, couple of bookshelves for keeping stuff. My favorite part about the living room is the lighting - I've got multicolored strands of Christmas lights over the doorframe, and a three-bulb floor lamp with blue, green, and red bulbs. Great smoking environment.

Bedroom is a damn mess, but it's where I spend the most time - between my futon and the computer desk. I have a 200 lb tube TV sitting on a dresser that I haven't opened in months, because it's the only piece of furniture in my house steady enough to hold the monstrosity.

Bathroom - not much to see here. Toilet could probably use a scrub, and there's mold in the corners of my bathtub that I have yet to address.

I rarely spend more than a moment or two in my kitchen - usually only to grab a drink, or make coffee, or wash a few dishes. I generally only eat one meal a day (big lunch) so I'm rarely cooking at home. I hate doing dishes anyways, so it works out.

Things I hate about my apartment - 1) it's old 2) my landlord hasn't fixed the oven in the 10 months I've lived here, so I can't bake anything 3) There are no cabinets in the kitchen, so instead I've got two giant wire racks on each side of the refrigerator.

Thankfully my neighbors are pretty chill people and the rent is less than $400 a month.

So what's your place of residence like? What do you like or dislike about it?

Since tomorrow's Thanksgiving, What's everybody thankful for? CasualConversation

I'm pretty down in the dumps this year (again) missing family and holidays of yore, with 30+ people crowded around the table that stretched from Grandma's kitchen, through her and Granddad's living and dining rooms, all the way to the front door of their house.

I miss turkey and dressing, scalloped oysters, cranberry salad, and grandma's refrigerator pickles. And home made pumpkin pie, of course.

I miss Granddad's refrigerated Hershey bars, Aunt Elsie's giggle, and Dad's heartfelt prayer of gratitude before we were allowed to "dig in".

I miss that carefree feeling of being a kid, surrounded by family, the realization never crossing my mind that one day most of these people would be gone.

This year the family gathering will be 1/10 the size it was back when we celebrated "for real". It'll be just the four of us: myself, my Mom, who doesn't really remember any of the people I'm missing, my son, who never met any of them, and my dog who just wants a bite of steak.

We're having steak because a turkey and all the trimmings is just too much work. (I am going to make cranberry sauce though.) We probably won't get so stuffed we need to nap after dinner. We plan on watching movies and playing games.

Today, though, I have a crap-ton of chores (the usual reality stuff- dishes, laundry, toilet-scrubbing, etc) to get through so cooking and eating and playing games and relaxing are possible. But I'm so bogged down with the bitter-sweet feelings the holidays bring, I just want to sit and daydream and cry.

So, I'm hoping for a little help from you, friends. When I get this way, I know the best medicine is to list all the things I'm grateful for. I start with the usual- a roof, a bed, food, clothes- and I move to the small- my favorite shirt just out of the dryer and still warm. I work up from there, until I get to the most wonderful "blessings" of my life, my son being the ultimate.

So help me out here, guys. Cheer me up. Let's make that list. What usual, small, silly, and wonderful things are you thankful for on Thanksgiving eve 2015?

Thanks in advance, and I wish you all a holiday season utterly absent of bitter and overflowing with sweet! :'-)
