I am renting an apartment in Iowa. My lease does say that the landlord provides appliances and that tenants may not remove or replace them without prior written permission etc. However I am not in a pickle regarding the appliance situation.
Lately the refrigerator and freezer have not been working very well. They were keeping things mostly cold enough but running nonstop. It has started to make several new noises that I am not sure what is causing but I know they sure don't sound good.
I contacted the landlord several times trying to get him to take a look and when he finally came out he said it's cold so it's fine.
Now it has completely failed (and taken a lot of food down the drain with it I'm afraid).
In the mean time he has replaced it with a mini fridge. It's only 1.7 cubic feet and not adequate for our family of free. I have been fighting the landlord over it now for a week and a half and now for the past three days he has just stopped responding.
I am wondering if there are any legal definitions of "appliances" for an apartment that might help me, or if this really is legally adequate.
Also I am sorry if there is an obvious answer to this, I am just looking for any options as this is very frustrating for us!
