My parents are always complaining about their electric bill, so I decided to take a look at it. Apparently we use about 3 kwh per hour at between 10PM and 9AM on any given day, (Can't determine actual usage from 9 am to 10pm as we have solar, but the net usage is always between -2 and 2 kwh. Anyway, through most of these hours we are sleeping, no lights are on, etc. We don't use heating that much, only for an hour or two during the really cold days, which in northern california is only like like a day here and there in the winter. We don't have an AC, and the nightly usage is pretty much the same every day of every year for the past 2 years (What we can date back to online)
We have a natural gas heater, and our appliances are natural gas as well including dryer and water heater.
What could possibly be using so much electricity when we are sleeping? The only things that I can think of that are actually on when we sleep that use electricity are the chest freezer and refrigerator, no way do those two use 3kw per hour...
EDIT: Our electric bill right now is $100-$300 a month, and while that may seem average, there's two significant factors into that cost. One, we are on a subsidized energy program which may expire in march, where we only pay between 9 cents and 16 cents per kwh instead of 14-30+. We also have solar panels, which should be keeping our bill low in months other than winter.
