Mini fridges and lagering Homebrewing

So I'm looking to step up my game a bit and really begin to control fermentation temperatures. I've been getting by with just making ales and things that are roughly in line with my ambient temperatures but I recently got my all-grain setup ready and I'm thinking about adding a fridge.

My question though is can a mini fridge + temperature control be able to handle both fermentation controls AND give me the ability to do lagering eventually? I'm a little concerned about a mini fridge not getting cold enough or something?

Some important caveats since I know these will come up

  • I cannot get a freezer. My storage space is only like 5 feet high and trying to lift a bucket into a top-loading freezer with like 2 inches of clearance sounds like a disaster and will likely end in spilled beer and tears.

  • I'm not kegging, so this is just for buckets or better bottle carboys

  • Space is the biggest concern here. I don't have a lot of it to work with so I'm just looking for one batch at a time, not a multi-vessel chamber or anything.

So, does anyone have success with using a mini fridge for this purpose? I'm looking around on my local craigslist but so far I'm not seeing any that look large enough. Someone was selling one of these: http://ift.tt/1F46GjT which in theory is big enough, but since it doesn't have a freezer I'm concerned that it won't actually get cold enough to lager.
