I told you I would keep you guys updated on how everything goes, so here is the first update:
After I paid, they gave me the number of the gentleman that donated the boat. Just as I thought, health and age became an issue. He is pushing 70 now and couldn't get his friends or his wife to stay active in boating. "Well, What's wrong with it?" You might ask... The toilet lever has split and gets a little temperamental. It doesn't have a second anchor. He only starts it twice a week and cycles the gears. The refrigerator doesn't work to well and the life jackets are old. The fiberglass boat bottom hasn't been cleaned since last year... end of story.
"That's great!" You exclaim in your relieved state.... But wait, there's more. Both motors were rebuilt 4 years ago. The interior has has some work. The waterpump has been re-engineered to heat water when you're on the water instead of just when it's plugged in at the harbor. The top was replaced within the past two years. 3 new batteries, new dividers for privacy, additions to sleeping arrangements that allow larger individuals to sleep well (he's 6'5"). It has a 50 gallon fresh water tank, electric or butane stove top and a whole lot of fishing add ons (including a ladder that helps with sport diving).
He seemed like a great guy that knows quite a bit about boats and has owned this for the past 20 years. I felt kind of bad that he had to part ways with his longtime sea companion but stated that I got it for a steal and was happy to see it go to someone younger and enthusiastic.
I appreciated all the input from you guys (even the naysayers). I'll probably head up soon and he is going to take me out and show me the ropes. I just wanted to let everyone know that, sometimes it is sunshine and rainbows.
Edit: I forgot to mention the captain's chair and bench have been upgraded. Some updated wiring and it's coast guard certified (no fees year to year to move it or keep it)
