Is it unhealthy to cook meat when its still cold? AskWomen

Some people say you need to let it come to room temperature before cooking, especially with steaks and chops.. I rarely do this and just cook it right out of the refrigerator.. Always comes out ok..

Is this unhealthy?

Would you want to live in a world where anyone who purposefully hurts another person (mental or physical) drops dead? Why? AskWomen

Curious about the results from mostly women. Here are examples of the rules:

Small examples of said supernatural rule. You accidentally pick up a bag that looks like yours but isn't. You live. If you steal someone's lunch inside the company refrigerator that you KNOW isn't yours. You die. This rule only activates with the assailant KNOWING that they're negatively affecting someone.

If you call someone a name with the expressed intent to hurt them emotionally. You die. If you express an opinion without the intent to hurt someone's feelings, and they get their feelings hurt. You live.

What is your ideal work space? What does it look like and what's in it? AskWomen

My work closed down over the summer when the land was sold to condo developers. We're currently working part time out of a different office while they renovate a new space near our old one. My boss is the owner and another employee and I are helping him design the new office. It's a pet hospital.

We are brainstorming ideas to make it a great place to work. A few of us are fit and a few are obese and working really hard to lose weight, so we're planning on having a decent sized employee refrigerator, a bullet for smoothies, a toaster oven, and an ice maker for iced coffees and ice water. My boss also allows me to order from Costco once a month, so I get drinks and healthy snacks for the staff.

Other ideas include plants and a fish tank. We need more ideas!

What would make your work space a great place to spend your day?

Ok Ladies, for those of you with an "active" job - what kind of diet do you follow to stay in shape? AskWomen

I (28F) just took a job as a contract archaeologist- I'm on my feet hiking and digging holes anywhere from 4-10 hours a day, six days a week. I was previously working a 9-5 in my little cubicle of boredom. I had gained a bit of weight over the fall/winter (10-15 lbs), but dropped back down to 140ish prior to taking the new job. I had been comfortably eating around 1200 calories a day, and doing T25, yoga, and/or running each evening. Now I'm eating 2000+ and am really lucky if I have the energy to work out 2 times a week. I understand that my body needs the extra fuel, but I really want to optimize this situation to tone up and slim down a bit. Any tips?

EDIT I have no access to a refrigerator/microwave during the day, and limited kitchen appliances during the evenings and mornings.

Grandmas, what are your secret recipes? AskWomen

I know you lurk on here...

EDIT: GOD DAMNIT DRAG YOUR GRANDMAS ON HERE AND WATERBOARD THEM TILL THEY SPILL THE BEANS!

EDIT: I shall provide a recipie to appease these grouchy grandmas, maybe then they shall let me know their secrets...

INGREDIENTS

For the Shortbread Crust:

2 cups all-purpose flour

½ cup granulated sugar

⅔ cup unsalted butter, at room temperature

Pinch of salt

For the Lemon Filling:

7 large eggs, at room temperature

3 cups granulated sugar

1 cup lemon juice, freshly squeezed (from about 6 lemons)

1 cup flour

⅛ teaspoon salt

For the Blueberry Glaze:

⅓ cup fresh blueberries, (plus more to top, optionally)

1 cup plus 2 tablespoons powdered sugar

1 tablespoons lemon zest, divided

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 9 x 13" baking pan with parchment paper.

In the bowl of a food processor, combine the flour, sugar, butter, and salt. Pulse until the dough comes together in large crumbs.

Press the dough evenly into the bottom of the lined baking pan. Bake until just lightly golden, about 20 minutes.

Combine the filling ingredients in a food processor and pulse until evenly blended and smooth.

Pour the filling on top of the shortbread crust and bake until the filling is set and the top is beginning to brown, about 35 minutes. Let cool to room temperature, and then transfer to the refrigerator. Chill for at least an hour before cutting.

Cut the lemon bars as desired. Combine the blueberries, powdered sugar, ½ tablespoon of the lemon zest, and the basil in a food processor and process until smooth.

Transfer the lemon bars to a wire rack on top of foil or parchment paper and top with the glaze, allowing the excess to drip onto the foil or paper below. Sprinkle with the remaining lemon zest and top with blueberries. Let the glaze set and then serve.

NOTES

If you don't have a food processor, you can combine the ingredients by hand, the food processor just saves some time and effort!

Store any leftover bars in the refrigerator.

What temperature do you like your pizza? AskWomen

I'm a room temperature gal myself. It gives the grease time to soak in to the cheese so it's not all shiny and wet anymore (I'm lookin' at you, Pizza Hut pizza!). My boyfriend prefers his pizza cold, refrigerator temperature. That's just too far for me.

[Trigger Warning] I'm co-writing a novel that covers some fairly intense physical/sexual abuse. I'd appreciate opinions on how to handle such topics well. AskWomen

My GF and I are writing a fantasy novel together that involves two princesses falling in love. One of the princesses grew up isolated in relative luxury. The other was kidnapped at a young age and forced to become a warrior/assassin.

We've hinted at the warrior having a rough past and intend to have at least one, and possibly several, flashback(s) to what sort of methods her kidnappers used to turn her into a ruthless killer. Her experiences include being tortured and raped, beginning when she was a child. Theyare a large part of her character and I want to handle them as such, but i also don't want it to seem to be handled flippantly. I personally dislike stories that either make a character revolve entirely around trauma or mention it once and hand wave it away later.

I want to get the point across that the kidnappers were efficiently brutal, more pragmatic villains than mustache twirlers, but I don't want to devolve into some sort of Saw-esque torture for torture's sake ramble.

I'm looking for discussion on what's too much, I guess. If you've read/watched media where graphic subject matter was handled well, or handled poorly, what made it so?

Tangentially related: we're making a point of subverting as many common tropes/themes (I'm not entirely sure of the correct word) as we can--no helpless blonde damsel in distress, no square-jawed white male protagonist, no dark-skinned evil people, no heteronormativity, no male default, no women in refrigerators, etc. I'd love some suggestions as to common fantasy themes that could be played with in a similar manner.

What healthy meals can I make to eat at work? AskWomen

I got a job, my first one. I am very happy, but here comes a problem. What to eat!?

I'm trying to get into shape (lose 10lbs), so I try to eat healthy, but I don't have ideas.

I work 7 am - 3 pm and I am very hungry in the morning (I usually eat whole grain big piece of bread and at around noon I eat banana and an apple, but that's not enough). I can't cook at work, we have a refrigerator and I can't go anywhere to buy anything, they only deliver burgers and pizzas there.

So what's healthy meals can I make at home and carry to work? :)

How do you feel about Dr. Horrible's Singalong Blog (assuming you've seen it)? AskWomen

I ask because it's been a bit on my mind lately, and here are some follow up questions to that:

  • Do you relate to Dr. Horrible and put yourself in his position, or do you wish there was someone like him for you?

  • Do you have a problem with the only female character in the admittedly small cast is basically a woman in a refrigerator, despite Whedon being an outspoken feminist?

  • How do you feel the story would be received if all the principle characters genders were swapped and the script remained the same with the exception of pronouns?

I was not a redditor when I first watched Dr. Horrible's Singalong blog, but now that I am and recently re-watched it, I'm seeing it through the lens of someone immersed in subs like /r/AskWomen /r/Feminism etc. and I now kinda see it as the ultimate Nice Guy fantasy. Thoughts?
