What Refrigerator Size to Buy? HomeImprovement

I am moving into a house with a refrigerator cubby that is exactly 36" wide. On the left is a wall that extends out from the space by a few feet, on the left the wall is only 25" deep.

I've gotten mixed messages on what size fridge I can fit in there. The person at Home Depot said that fridges today need very little space on the sides for air, so as long as the door opens flush with the side, we can go up to 35.75". The guy at Lowes said we won't be able to open the doors on anything about 35", which would mean we need to go down to 33", which we REALLY want to avoid.

Any opinions, experience, or advice? THANK YOU!
