Living with a friend who wants too much! needadvice

I've been living in my long time friends basement apartment for about 10 months with my teenage daughter. She owns her home and lives alone so she has the upstairs and I have the basement. We split the bills 50\50 and I paid half of her property taxes. I also had food stamps when I first moved in so I was buying all of the food. She had a boyfriend when we first moved in that did not live there but he helped her out with her half of the bills. He ended up stealing my daughters Christmas money and they end up breaking up. He went crazy and started stalking her and eventually set MY car on fire which wasn't even paid off yet. (he is in jail right now for it). Anyway, after they broke up my daughter wanted to take one of the bedrooms upstairs. No one had a problem with it so we let her stay upstairs. Three months ago my boyfriend of 3 years moved into the basement with me. The agreement was for us to pay $150 in rent each per month plus split the bills equally so all together we pay $300 in rent and an average of $170-200 per month in bills. We have our own bathroom, shower, and refrigerator downstairs. We all share the washer and dryer and the oven\stove upstairs. When he moved in we started buying our own food and eating supplies for downstairs. (I no longer get food stamps). We have plenty of food for us to eat. My friend loves to cook and she's always cooking food which my daughter eats. My boyfriend and I never eat food from upstairs. Recently my friend asks me if I still got food stamps and I told her no, we have been buying food out of pocket for downstairs. She tells me that I need to start helping her buy the food for upstairs as well because my daughter eats up there. My daughter is a teenager and can cook her own food. I told my daughter to stop eating upstairs and only eat the food I buy for downstairs because I don't think its fair to have to buy food for both apartments. My friend also asks me to buy other things for upstairs like toilet paper, toothpaste, paper plates and cups etc... today I told her I'm not buying any food for upstairs and that if my daughter is hungry she can eat the food downstairs. Now my friend is pissed off at me saying its not fair and we should just split the food costs for upstairs 50\50 and let her cook for my daughter. I don't want to buy food for everyone, just my family. If she cooks and offers my daughter food, why do I have to pay for it? Am I wrong for not putting food upstairs for my daughter to eat? Also she expects my boyfriend to mow her lawn for free since he owns a lawn Care service. He mows the backyard because its part of our apartment and she gets so mad when he doesn't mow the front lawn too. I'm starting to get really frustrated and just move out and let her pay all her bills and taxes by herself but I don't want to leave her hanging knowing she needs the extra income. Any advice?

Tech vented r134a from my refrigerator into my home - What should I do? needadvice

I'm looking for practical, legal, and health advice here.

Today a factory authorized repair technician came to my home to complete a repair of the refrigerator. In the course of doing the repair, he vented all of the refrigerant directly into my home.

I asked him about it and he said "It was just a little" to which I replied, "That didn't sound like a little. You dumped all of it. You can't do that. Do you not have a vacuum?" He said he didn't, he "You're right. I shouldn't have done that. I'm sorry."

I contacted the manufacturer of my fridge to see what they're going to do to resolve the issue and I haven't gotten a call back.

At a whole, here's where I'm at:

  1. Is anyone in my home including pets at all at risk?
  2. If needed, how can I get the refrigerant out of my home?
  3. What, if any, legal pursuit, is possible? Who should I contact?

Just graduated need advice on how I plan to live. needadvice

Hello reddit,

I live in NYC and graduated from college and just recently landed a city job working for a law enforcement agency (career path I want) making about 41k a yr. This is the most I ever made. Since I was 17 I worked in food restaurants from nice organic restaurants to shit fast food jobs. I had the opportunity to be a carpenter being in their union but I hated it so I ended up quiting even though the pay was amazing. Took me 6 yrs to finish college but w.e life happens. I majored in Criminal Justice with a 3.6 GPA. I stopped caring about college in my senior year to a point that I didn't even care to pick up my degree. If I ever needed proof that I graduated I will have to get a letter from my college with I don't need for any jobs at the moment. From working those food jobs I was able to pay off most of my college debt. I am currently on about 15k in debt.

I still live with my parents. I was planing to move out but my father offered me the opportunity and idea to fix up our basement and it will be livable for me. I can cook, shower and sleep there and the basement is separate from the house (you have to go outside to go the basement) so there is privacy, unless my mother needs to do laundry. I am learning how to cook and starting to learn about insurances since the law enforcement agency offers benefits which is new to me. After I pay all my insurance plans and union dues I'm looking at about 1800 a month for income after taxes. I have a vehicle and pay my phone and a little bit of rent. Which comes out to about 500 flat. Add in food and gym memberships I'm banking about 1100. My loans monthly are about 160. I also have a decent credit score of about 728. I never had a late payment other than maybe forgetting to pay by the end of the day but amex let's me slide. I never spend what I know I don't have money for so all my credit card payments never get over due. I believe in a 300% rule. Which means that whatever my bill is on my credit card if I don't have 3 times that amount in my bank account I'm fucking up and need to chill on the spending. Now with all that info out the way this is my plan. I plan to stick with this law enforcement job (still in the academy) and get at least one year of experience. Then start applying for law enforcement agencies left and right. That combined with my CJ degree and a internship at a police precinct should be a good look. While doing this save up 200-300 every paycheck to drop my student loans to about 10000 by next summer. While living with my parents I think fixing up the basement will be a good thing. I calculate to pain the rooms, get a bed, a small refrigerator and small freezer ,fix the toilet ,shower, and sink should round up to 3000 or 4000 max. So God forbid I get laid off my new city job in law enforcement I can fall back on my parents and be able to have some privacy and get a job while I figure out my next move. If that does happen 98% chance im going to sign up for the airforce and try and get into either their military police or computer programing (i heard this transfers into the civilian jobs well). If I do manage to keep my job I plan on moving out on my 25th b-day. To something small like a studio. I don't really care about having too much space since I have no children and only really need is YouTube to pass the time when I'm home . I'll be able to have a little place that I pay rent (800-1000) plus the basement at my parents house. Add on food , gym, transportation, loans and car insurance I'm looking at saving 200 every month for rainy days and vacation till I move up or get a better job. Good plan or nah? Any feed back or criticism is appreciated.

My mind feels like the dirtiest shithole in the world. needadvice

It's horrible. My mental health is at its nadir now and it's driving me crazy. I can't think straight, I can't concentrate on anything, I'm knowingly living a shitty life. I'm gradually self-destructing and I know it but I can't do anything about it. I feel like I haven't had a healthy mind for years. It's like an old refrigerator crawling with ants and cockroaches. I'm in desperate need of good counsel and wisdom. I need mental clarity. I want my mind to be like a well-oiled machine again.

[x-post] [FL] Tenant occupied rental property needs termite fumigation. Seeking advice. needadvice

What is expected from me (LL) as it relates to accommodating my tenants for the inconvenience associated with fumigating for termites?

They will need to vacate the premises for two nights. They will need to remove food, medication, or anything that they put in their mouths or ingest. They will likely need to empty the refrigerator and freezer.

My initial thought is to put them up in a hotel for two nights. OR they may stay with friends & family and in return I will prorate their rent minus three days.

Landlords who have been in this position, what have you done and what have you found works best for all parties?

Is an ex-addict not allowed to get relief from extreme pain? (Serious question) needadvice

My friend is in screaming pain constantly. He needs a hip replacement. He was homeless for almost 10 years, and during that time he got to using heroin, just for an escape of the misery of homelessness. He worked some landscaping jobs while on heroin. I think he had serious damage happening in his joints, but couldn't feel it because heroin.

He was in such bad shape, a social worker got him into government housing. He would be dead by now if that hadn't happened. He has gotten so bad he has to use a walker to get around. Just going from his bed to his refrigerator, he is screaming and crying.

NOT ONE DOCTOR will give him anything for the pain!!! He was able to get off heroin on his own, but went back to it once the hip pain became too much to handle. I was able to talk him into going to the methadone clinic, to get off the heroin again. The only reason he is in the methadone program today is for pain relief. He cannot even tell the clinic that he uses it for pain control only because they will cut him off. But even with the methadone, he is STILL in screaming pain.

He also has Hep-C. His surgeon will not do the hip replacement unless his Hep-C is gone. His regular doc said he won't do the Hep-C treatment until his pain is controlled. So while these two idiot doctors put him in a catch-22 situation, he is enduring necrosis on his femur and nearly intolerable pain. He talks of suicide. I just hung up with him because his hip pain is so bad it is giving him chest pains and he wanted to lay down to see if that will help his chest pain.

He also smokes cigs. He hobbles around outside his building, collecting cigarette butts to reroll into a cig. His doc says he has to be off cigs for 6 weeks before they'll do the surgery as well. Another mark against the surgery ever getting done.

The (hip) pain has become much worse in the last few days and he doesn't know why. I told him with the chest pain he should call 911. "No, I'm going to lay down and see if that helps. They won't do anything anyways." He says if they take him to the hospital, he won't have a way to get back to his apartment. He can't use his walker to hobble miles back home. He's been banned from using the bus system. Starving and homeless, someone left their purse on the bus, he stole the 20 bucks in the purse, they had him on camera, no bus for the cripple anymore. It just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it?

So my main question is: Is a person who is an ex-heroin addict basically screwed when it comes to pain control? His one doc did relent slightly one time and gave him some Tylenol 3. TYLENOL 3!!! For bone-on-bone pain! W in the actual F?

He may be having a heart attack right now. Maybe death is the best thing that could happen to him right now. For a doctor to have him in front of them, and know the extreme pain he is in yet do nothing for him? Special place in hell and all that. Absolutely heartless.

Any of you knowledgeable peeps out there have any answers/suggestions/comments? He is in the Mount Vernon, WA area, in case that helps. Will appreciate any replies. Thank you in advance.

P.S. PLEASE, no "he made his bed so let him lay in it" comments, if possible. He is being tortured for his choices as we speak. Thank you.

Going to l.a, going to be renting off random person. Does he seem legit ? needadvice

Sorry if i've made any mistakes, i am very new to reddit. This is my first post. I would really appreciate some help because i prefer not to lose money and this is my first time doing this. I would greatly appreciate some advice. The proper way to read the exchange would be from bottom to top, sorry for that !

Hello -Censored-, My apology for the slow response. I should say that the insinuation of this being a joke is kind of insulting but I do understand your concerns looking at the world we live in today. No offense taken!

I went through your filled form and I'm satisfied with the information you provided. My daughter whom you will be sharing the apartment with will arrive in LA on the 3rd of July. As you'll be moving in before her, I'll have the keys to the apartment sent to your present address (which I'll need you to provide in full) after you've made the deposit payment.

To secure the apartment you'll make a payment of the rent ($1000) plus a basic security deposit of $250 which is refundable at the end of your stay if nothing is damaged in the apartment. The total payment to secure the apartment is $1250. Payment will be made to me and I would prefer you send it through MoneyGram transfer. I would be able to receive it directly in person. Unfortunately, it is the only option available to me at the moment. I just arrived here in London less than a week ago and I'm still sorting out some paper works at the Home Office. Here's the details you'll need for MoneyGram transfer...

Name: -Censored- Address: -Censored- (my current address)

I'll need the transfer confirmation slip when it's done so I can have a proof of payment from you.

As for the agreement, I'll send you a scanned copy of the signed rental binder/deposit receipt after I've received your payment. It's a simple document that would reflect the exact address of the apartment, rent and security deposit, duration of your stay, your deposit payment, your move-in date, and the rental terms. You'll sign the space for tenant and send a copy back to me so I can have one with both signatures.

My UK telephone number is -Censored-. You can also reach me on my US mobile number -Censored-. We will have to schedule a good time to talk as I have an insanely busy schedule. You can also connect with me on LinkedIn, here's a link to my profile: -Censored-

Regards,

-Censored-.

I have attached the agreement. And like i have previously stated, i wish to stay for the month of july, starting from the 1st until the 28th.

Is it a scam? (renting an appartement) needadvice

Hi, I am looking for an appartement to rent in Poland. I found a nice offer, contacted a guy and below I will show you our conversation. I am not sure if it is a scam or not. Obviously I will first ask this person to show me the proof that he is the owner of this appartement.

Him, responding to my question about the appartement:

Hello,

I just read your message regarding my apartment. I bought this apartment for my daughter during her studies in Poland, but now she's back home permanently, so I'm renting the place for an unlimited time. The apartment is furnished and equipped. Also, very important, the utilities (cold/hot water, electricity, wireless broadband Internet, one parking spot, garbage disposal, refrigerator, etc.) are included in the rent . I require first month rent and one month in advance as a security deposit. When you decide to leave the apartment you will have to give me at least 30 days notice. Now, a little bit about myself: my name is ........ and I'm a 60 years old graphic designer from London, planning to retire in the next 2 years. I have a lovely wife, Christine and a 25 year old daughter, Linda. I am very proud to say that soon I'm going to be a grandfather :). Another member of our family is a six year old Labrador Retriever which we all love, so, since I'm a pet owner myself, I will have no problem if you want to keep a pet in the apartment. Tell me a bit about yourself... The only inconvenience is that my job doesn't allow me to leave London even for one single day. We just hired some new staff and I'm in charge of their training, so my schedule is pretty hectic right now. But this won't affect the rental at all. I can make arrangements to rent the apartment from London (on my expense of course).

Looking forward to hear from you soon.

Afterwards I asked him how those arrangement would look like, his response:

Hello,

Thanks for your reply, Like I have informed you before, the price you shall pay for 1 month of rent will be Zl1600 and I want first rent + one month >as a security deposit. I want to receive the money monthly to my bank account, so I hope it will be no problem for you to wire the money .

Of course you will have to see the apartment before discussing further details. I am willing to send you the keys so you can visit it and see if it suits your needs. The delivery for the keys and viewing permit (signed by me), will be made with Robinsons >(http://ift.tt/1CQqGqk ) to make sure that we can trust each other. You will receive the keys and papers in maximum 3 days. I will explain the procedure if you are interested so please email me as soon as you read this message because I really need to take care of this matter.

Regards

Later I asked for a detailed info about further procedure (I also said that Robionsons site does not say that company operates in Poland), his reply:

Hi,

Robinsons operates in Poland. You will have 2 days to inspect the apartment before your final decision. I will pay for the shipping of the keys and papers. I will make the delivery papers at Robinsons. After I will make the papers for delivery they will require for your payment confirmation of the first month rent + one month as a security deposit (Zl1600 + Zl1600 = Zl3200). Before you will make any deposit Robinsons will send you a tracking number so >you can see they have the keys and the papers in their custody and the delivery procedure is started. Also Robinsons will give you further instructions about the money deposit . After the payment is confirmed the delivery process will continue and after you will receive the keys you will have a two days inspection period before your final decision. If all is in order, you will instruct Robinsons to redirect the funds to me. Further rent will be sent directly to my bank account. If you refuse to rent the apartment Robinsons will give you a full refund (Zl3200) and you will give them back the keys and the contract. If you are still interested in renting the apartment please send me your full name, address and phone number and I will forward this info to Robinsons.

Also I e-mailed Robionson just now and asked them if they operate in Poland and if this is their procedure.

Is there such a thing as a battery that I can plug any electronic device to, instead of using an outlet? needadvice

Let me give you a little context for this one. I live in a country in which, for some reasons, the electricity is fucking expensive, to the point that we are no longer being able to keep up with the bills or use everything we want to use. So that got me thinking.. what if there was some kind of battery that I could charge somewhere else (in the office for example) that I could return home full of tasty, tasty energy to power my stuff, like refrigerator, microwave oven, etc? But does that even exist? I'm not looking for a nobreak (unless I can use a nobreak for that purpose). Thanks in advance!

I wanted to ask you a question about making a Iron casting mold via 3d printer to make Plastic parts for a refrigerators? needadvice

I own a business in which we make refrigerators for different companies. They often are excited to see new models e.g. new handles, drain trays etc for new refrigerators, but the problem we face is that in order to design a new plastic part, we first need to make an Iron mold/cast in which a machine shoots hot liquid plastic to take the shape of the mold. Currently, making an Iron mold is an expensive process, as the machine takes a lob of Iron and electrically chisels its down into the desired shape. This limits our capabilities to introduce different models. Question: I was wondering whether or not if there is a way to make an Iron cast/mold via 3d printer maybe use sand blasting technique or something else which can make Iron mold/cast, which can be used in the pressurized plastic machine to make plastic models for cheap and yet still is strong enough that it can hold the pressure of the plastic machine as in shoots melted plastic into the cast. Please note an i not talking about just 50 plastic parts, but more than that prob in 500's. Thank you for reading this.
