Developing World Perspective fatlogic

R/Fatlogic is one of my favorite subs. You all helped me tackle the absurdities of Western food and fitness culture with humor when I was at my desk job in America. Now I am living in a developing country in West Africa. Needless to say the dynamics and relationships around food are very different than in the U.S. Nearly everyone I meet here is ripped (especially in the rural areas that I stay). They have very low body fat thanks to constant manual labor and food being less available. They also continue to be strong and fit into very old age. 75 year old women will still go to farm and carry bundles of firewood back for miles on their heads.

As you might expect, seeing how food is treated here brings me new and different outrage about fatlogic. The activities that make the people here so strong, carrying firewood, fetching water, farming, etc. truly are a burden and dominate their whole lives. I do not mean to romanticize this aspect. These necessary chores take children out of school and keep people living hand to mouth in many cases. At the same time it is inspiring to see people who are so fit just from living their lives. It is a reminder that this is how we evolved to be. We are intended to exert ourselves on a daily basis. A 2 mile walk should not be difficult for us. Trust me, becoming obese with this lifestyle would be a challenge. Out of the thousands of people I've met I've seen maybe two dozen who were overweight and maybe a handful of truly obese people. The claims from people back home about how "it's muh genetics" just feel all the more pathetic. Every American I know who has come to this country has lost weight without even trying. I would challenge any fatlogician to come here, live this lifestyle and remain the same size they were when they arrived.

Despite the people's appearance here of being in prime physical shape, many still suffer from malnutrition. This is so upsetting to me because in the developed world we have all the nutrition we could dream of at our fingertips. In the face of all these options people choose calorie dense low-nutrient content foods instead. As I said, Americans here lose weight (me included) but it is often because we are losing muscle. It is difficult to secure reliable, affordable protein sources. It is hard to find fruits and veggies when you don't have a refrigerator to preserve them. The problem of malnutrition on top of a million others, clean water, malaria prevention, sexual health, education, truly makes all of the running away and crying in my car tumblr posts seem tragically trivial and self-absorbed.

I could keep writing forever, but I'll spare you. I know that these are all things we imagined about the developing world, but seeing them face to face... just thought I'd share the perspective.

I joined a site for wagering money to incentivize weight loss, and I love their explanation for why it's not gambling fatlogic

"In the US this is not considered gambling because the outcome of your dietbet is based on skill, not luck. Unless your refrigerator has been retrofitted to work like a slot machine, your weight is under your control.

Let's start with the legal definition of gambling (in the US): A person engages in gambling if he stakes or risks something of value upon the outcome of a contest of chance or a future contingent event not under his control or influence...

Gambling fundamentally involves betting on something outside your control or influence, like the Packers winning on Sunday, or on a contest of chance, like the spin of a roulette wheel. DietBet is neither. There is no luck involved in whether you win and your weight is entirely under your control (hard as that may be to believe sometimes). It is the textbook definition of a skill-based contest.

Furthermore, because DietBet is not winner-take-all like The Biggest Loser TV show, there can be multiple winners in each game. Indeed, everyone in the game can win (in that case, everyone gets their money back). It doesn't matter if someone else in your game loses more weight than you, or loses weight faster.

In the end, DietBet is just a healthy race against the scale with money as an incentive."

My 'Straya day with a Hamily fatlogic

Yesterday (26/1) was Australia day. It's a day typically filled with beer, BBQs and other bogan like stuff. My partner and I went to our friends house for a BBQ and a couple of bevvys.

I wasn't looking forward to it as

1) his partner is an absolute ham - I'm talking 5' and 300lb+ and the mentality to match.

2) they live in the western suburbs of our city - not a fan of that area and the people who live there

3) I'm currently trying to kick-restart my weight loss with 2 weeks of eating 1,200-1,500 a day rather than my usual 1,500-1,800 and that's hard with BBQ and drinks.

Anyway, when we first arrive, on the table there is 4 different flavoured doritos (probably 2 bags in each bowl) and a tray (roasting pan sized) filled with sour cream, salsa and cheese all stirred in together. With the ~15 people there, all that food was gone in about an hour.

Once the BBQ food was ready, I got myself 2 sausages in bread (it's Australia day - fuck it), a little potato salad, heaps of BBQ'd onions and salad. While everyone was eating, our friends girlfriend walked around with a 2L tub of sour cream asking who wanted some and ladelled huge scoops onto peoples plates. She got to me and freaked out that I had no dressing on my salad (no extra dressing that is, it already had olive oil and vinegar) and I proclaimed "no that's fine, I like it this way" and she said "Ash I think you're starting to show disordered eating behaviour! You told me last time we saw you that you've lost over 25kg in only 7 months and now you don't want sour cream on your salad? You look sickly!" (I don't look sickly, my BMI is still 29) and she went on to dump a full massive scoop of sour cream all over my plate. I was in shock, never seen anything like it. Her sister (who is even bigger than she is, body like a refrigerator box) then brought out the 4 different cakes for dessert and plated up A SLICE OF EACH for everyone. I had 1 spoonful of each and they were pretty damn average cakes. Half the people at the party added sour cream to their cakes.

God I feel sick.

My coworker is a FA/SJW/Tumblrina and I can't stand her fatlogic

Throwaway, for obvious reasons. I apologize in advance if this is the wrong place to post or I have broken any rules, I just wanted to vent to likeminded people. And sorry for the legnth. I started reading FPS way before I met this person, and that subreddit got me into this one, fatlogic. I don't have a specific "story" to tell so I'm posting here. I'm a current fat person (5'2 170 lbs), former shitlord (118 lbs) trying to regain control and these subreddits help keep me grounded in reality when fatlogic is around every corner, tempting you with its siren song "just eat the xxxxx, you've been through a lot - treat yourself, you deserve to make yourself feel better, give yourself this one little pleasure, you're beautiful just as you are, big or small" which would be ok if it wasn't all. the. damn. time. and negatively impacting my health. So, I'm struggling and I've always been struggling.

I've experienced fatlogic and the crabs in a bucket mentality at work before. My last major weight loss I went from 155 to about 125 and the whole way my (obese) coworkers were telling me they were concerned that I was starving myself, not eating enough because I was eating portion controlled lunches at 350-450 cals and turning down free donuts/muffins/bagels when they were provided. I get it, where I lived at the time this was the norm, strip malls, buffets and ginormous portions to match the ginormous people. Living there could skew anyone's perception of reality. They acted like it was a goddamn miracle, asking me how I did it and my honest answer was "eat less". Somehow that answer did not satiate them (teehee).

That brings me to my current situation, the reason why I gave the backstory is to illustrate the pressure from others and how it always feels like an uphill battle. I find myself living once again in my favorite city, which also consists mainly of shitlords. Good for encouraging weight loss, right? I wasn't fat when I got here but mental health issues combined with a neverending smorgasbord of culinary delights got the best of me and here I am. It feels crappy as a fatty being surrounded by slender, fit people but I don't fault them for it, I admire them for their dedication and strength and wish I had the same. Some of my favorite people in the world, my good friends are what they would call "anorexic bitches" and I absolutely hate that these wonderful vibrant multi dimensional human beings would be reduced to that label.

Ok, sorry to drag this on, I know you've been waiting for this part. Like I said, I got into Fatlogic/FPS before I met this person. Because of her I am now a subscriber of /r/tumblrinaction. I'm wondering, a lot of people mock these types online but do they actually encounter them in the wild? I hadn't, until I met her. Earlier in the year I started a new job at a new company and everything is great - wonderful people, fun work environment, go team spirit! I'm brought on to a small team where she and I are essentially equals, but she's been there longer. I thought she was cool at first, until I got to know her. She's basically the stereotype of a SJW, and a bully to boot:

-Around the same size as me, maybe a little bigger but she carries her weight better. Hourglass, but still fat.

-Multicolored hair, piercings and random refrigerator magnet tattoos -One of the first things she said that tipped me off "my bestie is naturally a size 18, that's just the size her body wants to be" -Every chance she gets she brings up the fact that she has a masters degree in creative writing -I can see her computer screen from where I sit, she spends the bulk (teehee x2) of her time on tumblr, jezebel and FB. -Speaking of websites, she referred me to this website chubbycartwheels dotcom OH GOD WHY DID I CLICK -She likes Tess Munster on FB, she wears an #EFFYOURBEAUTYSTANDARDS crop top (amongst others) to work with harem pants. Crop tops are never work appropriate, no matter your size! -Anytime I ever mention wanting to lose weight, like turning down free food because of that she has to say something about being happy the way you are -Everything is racist. As an upper middle class white woman, she's the authority on racism. Apparently everything I say is racist. -Correcting people's language all the time if they use what she deems to be improper words (whatever is offensive that day as it's always changing). -Hairy pits -Uses the term "check your privilege"

Why is she a bully? Well, she did call me a "literal garbage monster" and said I should slam dunk myself into a trash can because I said I was keeping out of the cops shooting blacks debate for my own sanity. Back story on that is my main priority is working on my fragile mental health right now, I'm experiencing lots of anxiety and when I waded into the street harassment debate it caused me undue stress, arguments and drama that wasn't good for me. I agree with her on the cops thing, I just can't get involved.

Once again I apologize if this doesn't entirely align with this subreddit's guidelines but she's driving me insane and I thought you guys would understand. I'm currently devoted to bettering myself, mentally and physically and I need all the support I can get. Working with this person makes it so much harder because she's always negative, always shames me for not being PC enough and whenever there's free food (always) she's encouraging me to eat it, because I should "love my body as it is". It would be fine if she kept all of this to herself but she feels the need to impose her standards on everyone else and I hate walking on eggshells around her.

Thanks for listening.

Snap challenge. fatlogic

[Trigger warning: long]

This recent FFF post talks about living on SNAP benefits, the SNAP challenge, the difficulty of eating healthy while on government assistance. I have no doubt living in poverty is hard, nor do I doubt that there are places where it is harder to get food than where I live (Midwestern US) BUT I also know quite a few people who live where I do and make the same arguments about poverty and obesity so I know that it is not the whole picture.

I had a look at the SNAP challenge and it says the average is $4 per day per person. Assuming a 30 day month, this means I would have $120 per month. My caloric requirements are ~1600 kcal per day assuming normal activity like walking around but no vigorous intentional exercise.

Meals are intended to require minimal preparation and equipment. I have factored in things like time and travel. I also assume I have:

A stove or hot plate.

1 pot.

1 frying pan.

Running water.

A refrigerator.

Here is what I came up with assuming you can only make it to one store per month (in this case either a Walmart or a Kroger, some price variation applies but it is pretty close). I assume that I would not use an entire bottle of oil in a month.

This one requires a trip to both Walmart/Kroger and a local dollar store (in my case there is one near both Walmart and Kroger). Same assumption about oil.

This one shows how you could stock up on basics (it does require Internet and a credit card, so it wouldn't work for everyone but it is a possibility for some. Also the author of the post clearly has Internet). Free shipping to home requires a $50 purchase so you could buy some of the stuff in the list each month (notice that you get several months worth of each food item). (PS to any stalkers/FA lurkers- I'm not in Naperville, I just used that as an example). Walmart also allows you to shop for cheap bulk items online, ship to your local store for free, and then go pick up all your items at once so you could get all your groceries in one monthly trip, at least where I live.

Now granted, I have an advantage in that I don't require that many Calories per day nor is this diet the epitome of healthfulness . But I also could have gotten cheaper and healthier items (the pre-seasoned rice for example is a convenience/loaded with sodium) and my totals added up to more kcals than are actually necessary for me with some money left over. And it isn't a terrible diet, especially if you supplement with food pantry and farmer's market foods when those are available.

I happen to have eaten pretty much this exact diet (minus the bread and noodles most of the time and with some variation in the protein sources but very similar) for several years. I had limited time, limited kitchen stuff, limited culinary skills, no car, and limited money yet was able to feed myself for very little and ended up neither malnourished nor overweight. I still eat a lot like this today, though my finances, cooking skills, and transportation are better than they were (though I'm not exactly mega rich either).

I also detect an element of snobbery from many articles of this nature (For example, lots of expired food is actually fine and it does not immediately turn toxic as implied by the OP and eating rice and beans regularly is normal for many people around the world, though FAs often turn up their noses at this type of "peasant food") nor is there any acknowledgement of the fact that 1) becoming and remaining obese indicates consumption of more food than is necessary and 2) many people refuse to stop buying unnecessary items like soda/candy/chips/convenience foods when complaining about the expense of feeding themselves.

Thoughts?

FatLogic at the Vaccine Center! fatlogic

Long story short, I went today to get some vaccines done! Now this is a research-facility for infectious diseases so I guess I can't be too critical since patients aren't there for checkups. But I had to make a call and walked into what I can only guess is the break room and with my little eyes, I spied the "Diet Under Stress!"

Want to see the rules for this diet? I apologize in advance as 1. The picture quality I did get was utter crap (so no uploads), and 2. Was on a time limit!

  1. If you eat something, and no one sees you eat it, it has no calories.

  2. If you drink a diet soda with a candy bar, the calories in the candy bar are cancelled out by the diet soda.

  3. When you eat with someone else, calories don't count if you don't eat more than they do.

  4. Food used for medicinal purposes NEVER count, such as hot chocolate, brandy, toast and Sara Lee Cheesecake.

  5. If you fatten up everyone else around you, then you look thinner.

  6. Movie related foods do not have additional calories because they are part of the entire entertainment package and not part of one's personal rule, such as Milk Duds, buttered popcorn, Junior Mints, Red Hots and Tootsie Rolls.

  7. Cookie pieces contain no calories. The process of breaking causes calorie leakage.

  8. Things licked off of knives and spoons have no calories if you are in the process of preparing something. Examples are peanut butter on a knife making a sandwich and ice-cream on a spoon making a sundae.

  9. Foods that have the same color have the same number of calories. Examples are spinach and pistachio ice-cream, mushrooms and white chocolate. NOTE: Chocolate is a universal color and may be substituted for any other food color.

  10. Late-night snacks have no calories. The refrigerator light is not strong enough for the calories to see their way into the calorie counter.

Now, I understand this might be just a satirical "diet" for those in the medical field, but it wouldn't surprise me if this is how some people actually thought.

TL;DR: Went to get shots, stumbled upon FA's Holy Ten Commandments.
