My factory Work Experience PointlessStories

My Factory Experience

I can say that I once worked at a food factory even though I wasn't there long enough to actually make a sandwich. I thought this might be a good story to type up while I'm here bored at work.

A couple of months ago I was nearly flat broke, I didn't really need the money but I thought that if could last a couple of weeks then the money could last a couple of months without a job.

Before I could even start work I had to attend an unpaid training session in town. Lizzy the agency lady who had arranged work for me before warned me that it was hard work. I told her that I didn't mind.

Day 1.

I woke up at 4. Got ready and left my 4:30 am. Waking up at that time made me feel like I was leaving for the airport.

I waited at the bus stop until 5:30am. Bus was supposed to have turned up at 5 according to my letter. I was cold and tired..I left. Went to sleep

Around 3pm the same day I called Lizzy to let her know what had happened. She agreed it was ok and that I could turn up the next day. Great.

Day 2 began the same. Woke up and left for the bus for 5.

This time I waited till 5:45, bus turns up, I'm happy and leave for work. Nice.

I'm there, finally. I turn up at the factory at the outskirts of my town. 30 min bus haha. I'm fucking tired.

I walk with the others toward the entrance. Felt lost and confused, I didn't mind though. Just thinking about the money.

I'm finally here. I sign in. Speak to a couple of people that help me with getting around. Get to know some of the people here. Mostly asian. Some European and then a few blacks as well. Barely anyone here spoke English but man.. I don't care. I'm here for only one reason I repeat to myself.

Lady approaches me. Can't remember her name so we'll call her Chillchick29 because she's pretty chill and she looks about 29. And a girl.

She lets me know the bad news. I can't work today. Wtf. Apparently they forgot about me so had no for space to work today. Don't worry she told me. I'll still get paid for travel. Nice I said. £12 she said. Fuck that I thought.

I'm back home again. It's 7:30. 2 days in and I've made a total of £12 quid. Good start I told myself.

Now it's Day 4. Day 3 was my day off.

Wake up. Eat and I'm there for 6.

Chillchick29 let's me know I can finally work. Fuck yeah.

She then helps me out with the gear. A hat net, Beard net and a coat. A pair of feet nets and boots.

I'm finally ready for war.

Wash my hands twice, walk through a couple of gates and I'm in.

Inside was what felt like a huge refrigerator. Big and cold. Everybody wore the same, managers wore red nets instead. They showed me around, chicken there tuna here and prawn in between. Good, I'm know where I am.

Chillchick29 looks for a station for me, I'm standing there cold and lost. Money is singing in my head, gives my warmth

She comes back, looks sad. Huh.. Why? Why?

She says there's no work today.

What?? Fuck this. She says I'll still get my travel. £12. Fuck that.

She lets me go home. Take off my boots. Jacket. Nets of all kinds and walk outside.

Im fucking happy. Hate that place, rather be broke

I go home. It's 9:30, don't go to sleep. Why? Because this is Gona be a good day. I'm broke but I don't fucking care, I lie to myself

Peace.

I'm unimpressed by Mountain Dew. PointlessStories

So, I live in a Caribbean country that often gets imports from popular products from the USA, such as snacks and the like; however, I have always noticed that Mountain Dew apparently simply isn't on the list of things-from-the-united-states-that-we-don't-get-on-our-supermarkets.

Until today.

I was doing my thing at the local Olé, which is probably the closest to Walmart we have in any and every sense, when suddenly I noticed something new and unusual in the beverages aisle. If you haven't guessed right now, yes, it's Mountain Dew; so based on the colossal amounts of indirect advertising it has received over the internet, I decided to try this so-called ultimate gaming elixir, in order to taste what pure digital performance tastes like.

After getting home, I stuck the four 12 fl-oz (355 ml) cans on the freezer while going on my way to do other things (particularly on my computer), until a moment I felt my body was ready to feel the absolute injection of power I would receive. I stuck my hand on the conveniently-placed refrigerator besides my computer and opened a can (which was slightly shaken, so it overflowed a bit; but not enough to cause a mess).

I took a sniff off the gases that were being released by it, then a faint sip at the liquid. Due to the effervescence of the drink, it was difficult to tell what the flavor was like; so I decided to try another sip, then yet another even more bountiful one. After a couple seconds of iterating this process, a realization hit me like a train - this flavor feels too known for me. In fact, I would say that this is exactly what 7-up would taste like if they took the minuscule amounts of lemon they put in their formula and added orange juice instead.

Surprised by how close this orange-7-up analogy described the flavor in my mind, I rushed to verify the information in the label; and sure enough, orange concentrate was indeed listed as one of the ingredients; probably the largest flavored one in it. Reading further, I noticed that caffeine was indeed another prominent ingredient for it; which would probably explain the power-rush-effect so thoroughly described in online communities.

Realizing that I just drank a can of orange-soda-flavored coffee at 9:34 PM, I sighed at the thought of my lost sleep, and did the responsible thing by putting the empty aluminum directly into the trash bin.

I'm a 30-year-old guy and I have two fidget spinners PointlessStories

Hear me out.

The other day I was at a bookstore and they were selling fidget spinners at the till, along with the other impulse-buy items like chocolate bars and city maps and refrigerator magnets. The queue was long and so I picked up a sample spinner and started playing with it. It was oddly satisfying. It had a nice heft to it, with a substantial metal disc in each lobe whirling around the bearings in the center. The movement was smooth and it made a soothing whirring sound. I set it down when the queue got to me and made my purchase and left. I felt a little self-conscious to have been so captivated by it.

Later that evening I met up with a couple of friends for happy hour, and I mentioned in passing that I played with one of those spinny things that all the kids these days have and that everyone over a certain age hates. One friend admitted to having nearly bought one earlier that same day, because he'd played with one at a grocery store and enjoyed it. He refused to buy it even though it was on 50% discount, because he was embarrassed to be seen buying a fidget spinner; like me, he too is a grown-ass 30-something man.

I was relieved that I wasn't alone in 1) the satisfaction of playing with a fidget spinner, and 2) the admittedly unwarranted feeling of awkwardness about it. So yesterday afternoon I was going over to this same friend's house to work on a project. I stopped at the grocery store along the way, and decided to man up and buy two discount fidget spinners. One for me and one for my friend. I got a receipt with it so that it looked like I was buying them for kids. I wasn't. But my friend and I got too caught up in our work, and I forgot to give him his fidget spinner.

I came home, took them out of their packaging, and fidget-spun with both hands all night while streaming old episodes of "Seinfeld". My hands are cramped and sore today. I feel like I did when I was a pre-teen and learned how to masturbate. I guess in a way this isn't a whole lot different.

I attended a meeting on accident PointlessStories

Last week I accidentally attended a meeting at work. I don't generally get invited to the meetings for my team, and so usually I don't go. This meeting just happened to be going on in the cafeteria/break room at a time when I went in there to get some ice water.

When I got to the cafeteria, I saw my entire team - maybe 14 or 15 people in total, including my assistant - sitting in the cafeteria, including our manager who was haranguing everyone. Everyone at least glanced in my direction, since I was the only other person entering the room at the time.

I felt awkward because I knew everyone sitting in there, and how could I just leave? So instead I took a seat closest to the refrigerator/freezer and sat through the rest of the meeting.

And on top of that, there was no ice.

Went apartment shopping, was disappointed. PointlessStories

In the lobby, the security guard waved goodbye warmly, perhaps with a tinge of embarrassment for him, to the broker and said mumbled something unintelligible. I was clearly not the first person who had come to see the apartment.

It was nice enough, but I didn’t like the neighborhood. A bit too run down for me, with empty lots and abandoned-looking warehouses in between the sleek skyscrapers that had been popping up for the past couple of years. A few plazas seemed to be in the works, and already some stores looked like they were being remodeled but overall, the derelict cars and shoddy people meandering in the streets overshadowed their efforts. Might have been a good investment opportunity, but it could take years before the area really picked up. Even so, I didn’t think about that at the time.

The early morning rains were starting to evaporate under the rising sun, and the streets were sweltering. I asked a lady were I could buy something to drink close by. She was standing in a small patch of grass in front of the building, wearing a blue apron and hotel slippers. Her dog was grey, and stared absent-mindedly across the street. He wasn’t on a leash. They had probably done this a thousand times before. She probably had a kettle boiling upstairs in her flat, and had timed it with the right level of heat so by the time they went back upstairs, it had just begun to boil. She probably scooped the coffee out of a ceramic dog-shaped jar, also a Yorkie, without looking, staring instead out to sea at the ships floating in the distance, gray and blurry from the mid-morning glare.

The store’s cement floor looked like it hadn’t been polished since the late 90s, and the clerk didn’t break the theme. I browsed through the metal racks, green and black where the paint had peeled off, till I reached the refrigerators in the back. I got a small Coke in a glass bottle. An opener dangled from a blue string by the door. Beer and soda caps formed a small pile under it, like someone had scooped them together but could not be bothered to pick them up. The rest of the store looked like that.

The whole street looked like that.

Walking back to my car, the glass bottle brought back memories of going to work with my father on Saturdays. I’d always get a quarter and run down into the docking area to get a soda. The machine was all the way in the back, past the sea of beams and crossbars and other at-the-time humongous iron parts all neatly stored in towering racks. They probably still look big, but I haven’t been back there since I was a child. Of course, I’d always get sidetracked on my way to the soda machine, sometimes by a challenging-looking climbing spot. I never made it past the third rack level. Up there, the hangar’s roof echoed tremendously. If I spotted one, I’d snatch an employee’s hardhat to add some excitement to my expeditions.

My father would always scold me for staining my jeans rust-brown and getting my sneakers dirty. Said my mom would get mad. Said we could get ice cream if I didn’t get my clothes any dirtier. Of course, I always did. And of course, we always did anyway.

A few days later, I brought the story up to my mother. She didn’t remember it at all, but she did say not to buy in that neighborhood because the buildings were full of structural problems, built quickly and on the cheap, instead of solidly like other older buildings in the city. My father agreed, and said I should be looking for bigger apartments in any case, because I should be having a family soon.

We were having pasta with fresh tomato sauce. I brought up this article I'd read about how using canned tomatoes, particularly San Marzano tomatoes, was better for most applications, like sauces.

[NSFW] Part1. This happened last year PointlessStories

The events written below are true and happened between September of 2015 - August of 2016, at a guest ranch.

THE INTERVIEW:

I take a deep breathe. The sun was high in the sky, shining bright through the cracked windshield of my car. I lean back into my seat, waiting for the time I needed to go in, I take another drag of my cigarette, nervous as hell while waiting. I check the time again, 12:45. Fifteen more minutes. It was a warm September day, and I had just moved back to my home town after a couple years away. It was strange starting my life over again in a town I had once dreaded, but you can never really run from your demons, you can only hide for a little while. I look around again, taking all the scenery in. I look to my right and see The Sign, the sign I would come to dread in the following months. "Whispering Willow Guest Ranch" Was burned across a giant wooden wall, it looked so beautiful, the ranch looked peaceful with the animals, almost like a piece of heaven tucked away outside of town. It was finally time to go inside, I slide out of the drivers seat, check my makeup one last time in the mirror, with another deep breathe I head towards the office.

I walk in and the smell of dust hits me, I see two old desks hiding in the corner of the small room, a pair of swinging doors blocking the entrance to another room with a small sign that says Employees Only". Four tall shelves filled with jams, jellies, and dry mixes covered the remaining walls. "Hello?" I call out, standing in front of the desk nearest to the door. The swinging doors open and a mans head pops out. "Hi, can I help you?" He asks wearing an apron and cowboy boots. "I-I'm here for my interview" I say with a stammer, "My names Roxie, Roxie Harth". "Oh okay, my name is Matthew, let me get the boss" He said as he emerges from the hidden room. "Take a seat" gesturing to the chair behind the second desk and disappears out the door. I grow more nervous with every minute that passed, the old office chair squeaked with the slightest move. The bells on the door chimed as She walked in, I stood up to greet her.

"Hi, I'm Roxie, I called yesterday inquiring about employment." I say with as much confidence as I can work up. "Nice to meet you, I'm Sherrie, the owner of Whispering Willow Ranch." She says extending out her hand to be shaked. "Please have a seat." I give her a slight smile and take my previous position on the squeaky office chair, Sherries face was that of an old woman, she looked to be about in her early seventies, her hair had turned gray but had bits of blond were left in it. She was dressed in a pair of blue jeans, a shirt with a picture of running horses printed on the front, a plaid long sleeve over the top, covering her arms. "So, do you have any experience working on a ranch?" She asks. Great, I don't. Fuck what do I say? Do I lie? No, don't lie, that'll look worse. I think as my mind races, "Honestly I don't, but I've worked many jobs with no experience and I've learned how to do them very well in just a few days." I answer, surprised by my own confidence. She seemed pleased with that answer. "Do you like horses?" She asked as her second question. Odd but okay? "I use too, but I haven't ridden in a long time and not really into it anymore." I answer honestly. "Good, when can you start?" She asks with a cheerful voice. "Whenever you like!" I say excitedly.

DAY ONE: I arrive thirty minutes before my scheduled time, parking in the same spot I did the day before, I was nervous to start my first day at a new place, with new people. I glanced up at and noticed the sky was overcast and it made the ranch look a bit dull. The man who greeted me yesterday was now on a tractor hauling hay to some animals behind a building. Deep breathe, it'll be okay. "I know that!" I say to myself aloud trying to calm down.

When I walk through the office door, people were buzzing around, unlike yesterday, today seemed like it was going to be hectic. I knock on the swinging doors and a woman came out. She had long, dark brown hair, she was short but slender, her eyes were a bright green and she was very tanned. "I'm Amy, I'm suppose to be training you today." She said very cheerfully.

"Hi, my names Roxie, nice too meet you." I say trying to sound more enthusiastic and less nervous. I followed Amy around the building, through doors to other rooms. "This is the dining room." Amy said signaling to go through a door I hadn't notice the day before. The room was big, Old tables and chairs scattered around, there was an older woman with a clip board at the other end. "This is Pam, Pam this is Roxie." Amy said, introducing us to each other. Pam was taller than I'd thought as she grew closer to me, "Hows it going?" She asked me, Pam was older but seemed fairly young for her age, she had light orangeish blond hair, she wore the brightest blue eye shadow I've ever seen but it matched her just as bright eyes. She was wearing cowboy boots but that was all the western themed attire she had on. After being shown the bar located around the corner, I followed Amy outside. The sun was starting to peak and the sky seemed to be a little more brighter than before. "So what do you think about it so far? Amy asked me. "It seems like a great place to work." I answer with a smile. I follow her out towards a pasture where four cabins were hidden, she goes up to the first one to unlock it. We step inside and was greeted by boxes, boxes stacked up taller than both of us combined. "What is this?" I ask curiously. "Its one of the cabins we rent out, during the off season we use them as storage." Amy answered. "I know you're new here, but you'll learn fast that Pam is not your friend." She added What? Why is she telling me this? I ask myself. "Okay?" I half-assed questioned her, she continues. "Nobody lasts here long, its like this place is cursed or something, but nobody lasts here longer than a week." "Whys that?" I ask, Is she trying to scare me to get me to leave? Almost as if she didn't hear me, she changes the subject. "Someone committed suicide over there." She said, pointing out the window to a small house off in the distance. "Haha you're kidding, right?" I chuckle a little as I say that. "If that were true, than it would've been all over the news!" "No, I'm not. I'm just warning you, that's the kind of power Sherrie has."

DAY FOUR:

Sherrie was a sweet old lady, stressed? Yes but why was Amy telling me all that? I thought trying to shake the other day off, but it kept on creeping back. I pushed the words out of my mind and made my way towards the kitchen behind the swinging doors. I dressed in a pair of sweats and a T-shirt because today my task was to deep clean the kitchen, right away I got started. Nobody came in for almost twenty minutes but I was enjoying the silence. As I was moving a big tub of flour off the shelf, Sherrie came in, coffee mug in hand. "Good morning." She said through a yawn. "Morning" I replied, setting the container off to the side and began scrubbing the shelf it sat on. "What are you wearing?" Sherrie asked abruptly. "My cleaning clothes."I replied with confusion, as Sherrie told me to wear clothes that could get ruined the day before. "No, no, no." She began, "This is a western themed ranch, and I can't have guests see you wearing that!" Sherrie exclaimed, making me jump back a little bit. I looked at her in complete shock. "You said yesterday-" "No." She interrupted. "I didn't, you're mistaken." What? No I'm not! She continued "Don't dress like that again, if you can't follow the rules, than don't bother coming back."

I finished cleaning the kitchen and snuck away for a smoke break. I hid behind one of the storage sheds and found an old bucket to sit on. What the fuck? I thought as I lit the cancer stick, upset at what Sherrie had said earlier. What if Amy was right? What if she really is crazy?... No, no, she probably just forgot. "Probably." I agreed with myself aloud. She handled it very unprofessionally though. "Maybe I should find somewhere else to work?" I ask myself. No, don't do that, you won't find another job fast enough to cover bills. "Fuck, that's right." I mouth as I grudgingly stand up to go back inside.

"Hey!" Amy exclaimed as I walked through the door, the bell jingled slightly as I gently closed it. "Whats up?" I ask as I make my way into the kitchen. "Well." She began, "I was wondering if you want to do me a favor?" She asks. "Uhh sure?" I reply. "I gotta take off early, can you finish for me?" She asks, looking at me with eagerness and excitement. "Yeah, that'll be okay, what do you need finished?" I asked a little flustered at the thought of working another minute, but I was still new and didn't want to come off as 'lazy'. "Well-" She began, "I was just starting on one of the orders-" She cut off, Okay? Why is she taking so long to spit it out? I ask myself waiting for her eyes to quit shifting around the room, She seems nervous... I thought while watching her. When the coast seemed to be clear enough for her, she began again "I started on a order that's a few months late and I know your new and Sherrie wouldn't like that I'm asking you this, but I really need to leave to go pick up Marie from the baby sitter." She sounded anxious at this point. I nodded in understatement, "Go, I got this." I told her. "Thank you!" She exclaimed once again and headed out the door.

I headed through the swinging doors into the kitchen. The recipe book was laid out on the table in the center of the room, the sinks were located across from where I was standing. The stove was behind me on the far left corner, next to it a plastic storage bin with drawers. On the other side of that was the refrigerator. Most of the counters have already filled back up during my break. I looked at the page Amy was on, "Okay, Huckleberry Deer Bread." I say out loud to myself, I gather the ingredients listed and begin. A couple hours fly by and I'm in the middle of sealing the last bags I had filled when Sherrie made an appearance in the kitchen. "Oh you're still here?" She asks surprised to see me in the kitchen alone. "Yeah I'm covering for Amy while she picks her kid up." I answer, it was nearing seven-O-clock by this point and I was a quarter away from finishing the order. "Oh, well you can take off if you like, Amy can clean the kitchen in the morning." She says cheerfully. "Are you sure?" I asked cautiously, remembering our encounter this morning. "Yeah it'll be fine." She said in a much less enthusiastic tone. Okay then.. My mind began to wonder as always, I guess I'll go.. "Okay" I mutter, as I began to gather up my purse and clock out. "See you tomorrow!" I call into the kitchen, "Night!"

I make my way towards my rustic piece of shit, the sun was barely in the sky when I started my car. I began backing out and pulling away, my cassette tape rumbling as it rewound, the white noise filled my car. Feeling relaxed I started to think about what Amy had said the first day I was there.

OCTOBER;

Sherrie was frantically running around, papers were gathered in her arms and falling faster than she could gather them. "We have to get ready for The Denver Trade Show!" She yelled. I went over to help her organize the papers she had given up on retrieving from the floor. "Whats a trade sho-" I began to ask, Sherrie seemed to not have heard me as she walked over to her desk and flopped down with a frustrated sigh."I have a lot of things to do, I don't have time for stupid questions!" She began, by this point I grew accustomed to her rants, but this one seemed to be a new level I haven't seen before, Oh shit, not again, I thought as I waiting on the eruption that was about to follow. "I need people to do their jobs, I can't stand here and do it for you!" She started to yell. Amy and Matthew emerged from the kitchen. Pam, who was taking some of the jams off the shelf and packing them away, stopped and looked up to watch as Sherrie continued. "I have a lot on my plate and it's not my job to babysit!" Amy seemed to have grown numb to this and frankly I was starting too as well. I make product, I clean, I do all the extra stuff nobody seems to want to do. What is she talking about? I asked myself, I began to turn away to finish organizing the bread shelf when she started up again.

"Don't turn away from me! Nobody turns their back to me ever!" She said through gritted teeth. "I-I'm sorry." I stammer out, "I was just g-going to finish this." I say gesturing towards the shelf that was half finished, WHAT.THE.FUCK! Leave now, this is bullshit! "No, I'm tired of being taken advantage of by people like you!" She yelled at me, "And another thing!" She turned towards Amy, "When I expect you here, you better be here! No more of this swapping bullshit!" Before I, or anyone could respond, she got up, slapped the remaining papers on her desk and walked out. Amy went back into the kitchen, Matthew followed. I stood there staring at the floor trying to figure out what the hell happened. Pam came over to me and began to say, "Shes under a lo-" but I interrupted to ask if I could leave, Pam agreed that it would be best and I went home.

THE NEXT DAY: I called in that morning, Sherrie didn't answer, but a man did. I lied and told him that my car wasn't starting, which was very believable with the way it looked. After a disappointed, 'not this again' sigh, he told me he would relay the message to the boss. At first I was relieved, I went back to sleep, I lounged around for a few hours. But my mind kept on going back to that place, I've only been there a month and already it's been a pain to work at! I thought, I mean what the fuck, what is wrong with this woman? I asked myself but couldn't answer. I dialed Coles number into my cell. "Hey hows everything at your new job?" He asked excitedly. I lied and told him that everything was fine despite how I was really feeling. "When are you coming to visit?" I asked him, hoping it would be soon. Cole was recently attending college a few towns away and it was the first time in three years that we were living apart.

"I don't know, maybe in a week?" He responded with a question, Well that's helpful, I thought sarcastically. "Okay, will you let me know soon, so I can let my boss know ahead of time?" Not that it would make a difference, not after yesterday.

"Yeah, I'll let you know by tonight." He said. After our usual 'I love yous'. We hung up and I laid back into my bed, feeling stressed and bored, not wanting to waste my 'day off', I got up and took off to my sister's house. When I arrived, she was having a party, not a huge party but there was a gathering of people, her friends. I walked into the living room to a bunch of people sitting in a circle passing around a bong. I planted my ass between her and her roommate Jesse, she handed me the bong and I took a huge hit. It had been years since I had gotten high, but I was stressed, I just needed something to help me relax. I coughed hard as it was burning my throat, but I felt better.

"Hows it going up there?" She asked, meaning Whispering Willow Ranch. "Not good, Sherrie's fucking nuts!" I say through small coughs. "Yeah I know, people have told me things about that place." Megan said, the bong was handed to me again but I just passed it without taking another hit. "What do you mean?" I asked curiously. "Well I tried working there last year, and well Sherrie tried to keep me from leaving." She stopped to take another hit. "She tried to get Matthew?... Yeah Matthew, to stop me from getting into my truck." Oh my god "Oh my god." I said, "So what happened?" "Well obviously I left." She said through a giggle. No shit Sherlock.

Megan changed the subject after that, I was mind fucked at this point and couldn't believe what I was hearing, and I stuck around so I wouldn't be alone, I was relaxed and I was enjoying being surrounded by people. When I got home that night, I let my dog out to use the bathroom. I lit a cigarette as I stood there and waited for her to find the perfect spot to go on. It was about 9:30PM, and my phone started ringing, Coles name popped up and I answered. "Hey." I said, "whats up?" "Hey, I'll be there on Friday. " He said. Oh thank God "Good, what time do you think you'll be here?"

I went back to work the next day, despite my gut feelings and what Megan had told me, I still believed Sherrie was a good person at heart. I walked into the office, to Sherrie sitting at her computer complaining about her program 'QuikBooks.' After I clocked in, I was walking towards the kitchen when she called out my name. "Roxie, do you know anything about computers?" She asked. "No, I'm not computer savvy." I responded honestly, I thought for sure she was going to start yelling again but she didn't. She responded with an "Oh." Just then I got a bright idea, Cole! Cole know's computers! "But my fiance does." I start. Her eyes lit up, "I didn't know you were married!" She exclaimed. No, I'm engaged. But I didn't correct her, I continued. "He'll be in town on Friday and can look at your computer if you want too." I say.

I start mixing flour and other ingredients in a pot when Amy came in, "So." She started, as I'm measuring out three cups of parsley and pouring them in. "Why would you tell Sherrie I left to go party the other day?" She asked clearly upset. I was confused and turned to face her, "No, I never said that." I responded, very confused at this whole situation. Amy was now on the other side of the table and she was watching as I was mixing the parsley in. "Well I had a talk with her the other night and she said that you told her I asked you to cover me to go party." She said in a angry tone. What? No, that's not what I fucking said! "No, I told her you were going to pick up your kid." I said in a matter of fact tone. Seriously? What the fuck? "Oh okay, I guess." She said with skepticism, but left it alone at that.

A woman I haven't seen before came into the kitchen minutes later, Amy seemed excited and introduced us, "Susan, this is Roxie, Roxie this is Susan. She's our live in vet." "Hi, nice to meet you." I say, Susan was short, skinny, and had a hat on but I could see a knotted pony tail underneath, she had no makeup on and I swore she was in her late twenty's, so too young to be an experienced vet.

"She lives in the mobile home." Amy informed me. Gesturing with her head towards where the trailer sat. "Oh cool." I say, then why the hell haven't I seen her until now? I turn on some music and start focusing on my work. Matthew appears a little while later and puts on an apron, "So you're engaged huh?" He asks, as he makes his way around the kitchen to gather the things he needs to can. "Yeah." I say as I'm wiping down the counter and putting away the ingredients from my last project. "Oh nice." He says, before continuing "So are you saving yourself for marriage, or what?" The fuck? "What?" I ask, surprised. "Never mind, it was a stupid question." He says before changing the subject. "You know Amy and I are going to be engaged soon." I didn't know they were dating? I think before I respond. "Oh congrats" I say with as much interest as I would give a dead fish.

"Thanks" He says in monotone, his face blank. "You know, I never wanted to settle down, but I guess you have too eventually." Why is he telling me this? I didn't respond, I started on another project and the kitchen filled with the sound of the radio playing in the back ground. "So did you wear that shirt because you knew I would be working with you?" He said, flashing me a smile. I looked at him in confusion, and realized I was wearing a low cut shirt. "N-no?" I responded. "Well I like it, looks good on you." He said before turning towards the stove. Okay?

I didn't respond, I didn't know how to respond. It was just thrown out there and my brain had a hard time grasping what he was trying to say. "You have to be 'experienced' with men" He began again. "That's really none of your business." I say with a light tone to ease the message of Shut the fuck up. But he didn't get the hint and continued. "Yeah I bet your one of those girls that get offended with these kinds of questions" He said mockingly. What does he mean by that? "No, I barely know you and don't think its a good idea to talk about this stuff while at work." "Well why don't we get to know each other better?" He says in a whisper, pouring some kind of berries in a pot. I stood just a few feet away, sealing the last of the bags, the kitchen filled with flour from top to bottom. I was finishing the last bag when he came closer. "Well?" He asked, more serious than before.

Uhhhhhh, what, what is he talking about? No! I need to leave and go take a break before this escalates any further.I thought "I'll be back." I say, stepping back and slipping out the swinging doors before he could say anything else. It was almost five O clock by this time, and the sun was just setting in the distance. I hid in my usual spot and lit a cigarette. Please, please, please be gone before I go back in. I thought to myself, but I knew he wouldn't be. The whole thing was surreal and out of nowhere. I just kept on wishing Friday would come sooner.

After I was done, I went back into the kitchen and to my bitter-sweet relief, Amy was standing there talking to Matthew, it looked as if they were arguing. Not my business, just finish up and leave. An awkward silence had filled the air. Amy had turned towards me and broke the silence I was enjoying, "Sounded like you two were having fun in here?" She asked with a forced smile. No, your boyfriend was the one having "fun" I wanted to say but didn't. "No? We were just talking" I say looking her in the eye. "See, I told you, nothing fishy." He breaks in. Amy looked at him and then me, I was thinking I should run for the door, because bitches be crazy, and the knives are just above her head. "Alright." She said, starring at me, giving me a cold look, but I just nod, hoping that would signal to her that I understood. The kitchen was silent after that, which I preferred over the alternative.

I cleaned up and clocked out for the day. I got to my car before Matthew could finish his conversation with me, I felt a weight lift from me as soon as my tires were off the property

My boyfriend made a pretty funny remark that I felt the need to share. PointlessStories

We were sitting on the couch, being pathetically romantic, watching a movie. He turns to me and says "Are you going to love me forever?" Since I'm not that pathetically romantic, I said "I don't know. Maybe one day you end up doing some pretty cold shit." He responds with "like what? Poop in the refrigerator?"

I remembered my neighbor's affair PointlessStories

I saw a man in a restaurant today. He reminded me of a neighbor I had while living in a different city.

My apartment looked out into a courtyard and the backs of other apartment buildings, like a European block building. One of my neighbors had a small balcony on which he used to smoke cigarettes and lean on the black wrought-iron railing.

Often, barely lit by the faint light spilling out of the apartment, a petite blonde would join him. She wouldn't smoke, but hug him from the side. He occasionally turned towards her, and they bent over slightly in laughter.

I couldn't hear what they were saying, but they seemed happy.

Some weeks later, I had changed jobs into one that had a clean four hour chunk in the middle of the day. I started going back home to cook lunch and sometimes lie down for a small nap.

One day, staring out the window, I noticed the man was out on the balcony, smoking, leaning against the black railing. He turned and suddenly locked eyes on me. I froze. I didn't think he could see me, as I was standing behind highly reflective glass windows, but he was staring straight at me. He must have been seeing me. I felt that compelling force of prolonged eye-contact.

I thought I should pull away from the window, but couldn't.

Something broke his attention. A woman came out unto the balcony. She was wearing blue jeans and dark brown hair. She kissed him playfully and pressed against his chest. She pulled him by the shirt. He resisted lightly, turning to in my direction before giving in to the pull.

I later ran into him in the grocery store. In the following weeks, I deliberately went to the one by his building, even though there was a closer one next to mine. Once, he was with his wife, and pretended not to have seen me, didn't even acknowledge me, like I was just another cabinet or dried fruit rack.

The second time, he was alone in the dairy section, holding a half-pint carton of milk. It was small and green, a brand I didn't immediately recognize.

I walked into the aisle and froze. He looked up and held eye contact for a few seconds. His expression shifted. It made me uncomfortable. He let the refrigerator door slam next to him. I ducked into an aisle--the bathroom products aisle.

I left my shopping basket on the floor there, next to the row of treatment products for fungus or some other similar condition, and walked out of the store.

Clouds were beginning to take hold of the sky, white, shapeless, and bright. I a taxi for work later, afraid to walk around the neighborhood, and largely avoided walking around the north side of my block for a few days afterwards.

In the restaurant, the man smiled at me. I must have been staring. I smiled back. He got up to greet me, still smiling though I could see the confusion very clearly behind it, thinking we must know each other from somewhere but unable to recall from where.

We shook hands. I could feel sweat pooling behind my knees and beading on my forehead. I stretched my arm and shook it stiff, with unnatural force, thinking at any second he would pull me closer and say something threatening. But he was not the same man, after all, no matter how afraid I was.

"Enjoy your lunch," he said. "Good to see you."

"You too," I said, and walked away.

I went to pour myself a glass of wine, but it was too dark to see PointlessStories

I keep my boxed wine next to the refrigerator. So, rather than walk three feet over to the light switch, I opened the refrigerator door. It was a bit hard to see, but I managed to fill up the glass without spilling any (I think).

So I just realized I have the stupidest pet peeve. PointlessStories

I have a pet peeve that I know is stupid and absolutely silly and is just a #firstworldproblem in retrospect, but for some reason I absolutely HATE it when people at work don't clear the remaining time on the microwave.

It's not like they leave a useful time, like 30 seconds, or 45 seconds, because I can use 30 seconds to warm up coffee. I can use 45 seconds to warm up some food that's been in the refrigerator for a short period of time. But they leave 3-7 bullshit seconds on the microwave. So when I go to use the microwave and push a button I'm wondering why the fuck it doesn't work and realize it has 3-7 seconds left on the microwave.

Like you couldn't wait 3 seconds to open the door so it can be automatically cleared when you shut it? you couldn't be pressed for half a second to push the "clear" button? For some reason it just boggles my mind that that 3-7 seconds is too much more to wait, and I work in a place where 3-7 seconds matters and feels like absolutely nothing.

and I KNOW this pet peeve is stupid because it's no big deal to push an extra button. But for some reason I just can't get my mind around not waiting 3 freaking seconds.

DAE have a pet peeve that you realize is absolutely stupid but irritates you anyway?

The Hand of Destiny (long post) PointlessStories

Hello! I just found this sub, and I love it. I love it so much. I never knew I could love a sub this much until I found it, and that's because at long last, I can finally share the Greatest Thing I've Ever Done, which just so happens to have been completely pointless.

So I like to stay up late. And I mean really, really, late, as in bedtime for me is technically tomorrow. When I was a teenager living with my parents, this presented a problem: other people are smart, and don't do this thing. In fact, many people across the globe enjoy going to sleep at reasonable times, and conversely do not enjoy being woken up during the pitiless hours of night because I wanted Bugles while I played World of Warcraft. Therefore, whenever I'd go to the kitchen at night, I would do everything within my power to be as quiet as a mouse.

It was just a glass of water. I wasn't using the creaky oven, I wasn't getting a crinkly bag of chips, and I wasn't messing around with clanging ceramic plates. Just a plain and simple glass of water. And it was an actual glass, which I didn't think would matter. I was so naive.

We had one of those refrigerators with a water purifier on the front, so I was using that. However, our fridge had doors that would only close all of the way if the left one closed first. The purifier was on the right door, and I had been scanning the fridge through the left door. My phone was in my pocket, where I have always kept it when it isn't charging. When I saw my glass nearing fullness, I pushed the left door closed, took the glass from the fridge, and put it on the counter behind me. Tired, I reached into the air to stretch and yawn, then reached back to the counter for my glass. Wrong spot. So I felt around with my hand open, trying to grasp it in the dark. The glass. But there was something wrong. I only felt it briefly. I didn't grasp it. I just felt a bump, and nothing. After thinking for a moment, it hit me like a ton of bricks.

The glass is falling.

The Perfect Storm had appeared offshore. This was a big glass, and I knew in my mind that it would absolutely wake my parents if it shattered, who would discover me and chew me out. Furthermore, I would have to clean for for-ev-er, because the only thing that would make them angrier than a broken glass at night would be a glass shard in their foot in the morning. And oh man..... Oh Heavens above, if all of this water splashed on me, my phone would be broken. Then how would I Google every single one of my stray thoughts? Sure, my parents needed to sleep so they could earn the money that actually paid for that phone, but like I said, teenager.

There was so little time, but so much to lose. I had to act fast, or I'd be left with nothing but despair. My phone was a lost cause. Water might not even splash me, but if it did, I'd never be able to save it. I accepted this sacrifice, and moved on with resolve. All that mattered now was stopping the impact with the floor, and with my beloved phone resigned to sacrifice itself for me, failure was not an option. I tried to see the trajectory of the glass, but the darkness consumed my vision, and I knew my eyes couldn't help me either. So I closed them, and like an angry god, I reached forth with power and alacrity. It felt like my arm would ignite from the speed. From fall to reach, less than a second passed, but to me, it was like a second lifetime. And yet, all I could do was give my all, reach to where I thought the glass would be, and hope. Please, please, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee-

I caught it. It was there, right there. There it was, in my hand, right there in my hand, right in the hand I had caught with. My brain stuttered and backpedaled. I.... I caught it? Like, nothing bad happened at all? At all? I quickly reached for my phone, then slowed my hand out of general caution from what had just happened. I scanned the floor and the glass. Nothing. Not a single drop of water had left the glass. I paused in disbelief, and realized that my heart was pounding. I became convinced of divine intervention, and all the way back to my room I thought about how if I hadn't been left-handed, the counter would have been in the way, and I never would have made it in time. I told my guild, and they didn't care. I told my friends, and they didn't care. I had never been happier, and may never be that happy again.

About a year later, I broke a thick-walled glass measuring cup while making some pasta, and I almost died on the spot. No one woke up. I cleaned up what I could, but my mom scraped her foot on some glass the next morning. She didn't notice until later that day.

My procrastination finally paid off. PointlessStories

Procrastinating's one of my favorite things, even though it usually bites me in the ass. However, I've been putting off grocery shopping, because I hate it, and a little while ago I noticed that my refrigerator is not working. I'm going to keep the doors closed, and hopefully I can salvage some stuff, but if I don't, there's not a lot to lose.

Boiling water to kill thirsty PointlessStories

I came home from college with thirsty. I opened the refrigerator and saw that it had no water. I looked in the pantry and saw that my gallons were empty. Therefore, I am, at 23:40 in local time, boiling water to drink just like a caveman.

I finally realized why I can never spell "refridgerator" correctly PointlessStories

The correct way to spell it is "refrigerator", yet I always spell it "refridgerator". I never really paid attention to the difference, and would always just right click the red squigly and let computers fix it for me.

Today, however, I finally realized the problem. When you abreviate it, you spell it "fridge", with the letter d, despite the fact that there is no d in the actual word (insert dick jokes here). It's in the abreviation because "frige" looks like it's pronounced "fryje" or "fry-gee" or something.

Hopefully moving forward with my life I can start to spell it correctly, but to be honest "refridgerator" still looks more correct to me than "refrigerator".

I lost some Jell-O PointlessStories

I was packing my lunch for work last week, and I took two little cups of Jell-O (flavor: Lemon-Lime) out of the refrigerator to take with me to work. When I arrived at work: no Jell-O. I figured I must have left them on the counter at home.

When I got home, no Jell-O to be found. Not on the counter, not still on the shelf in the refrigerator. Not in the garbage. Not in the trunk of the car, where they might have fallen out of my bag. Not absentmindedly set on a shelf in a cabinet where I might have reached for something else that morning. It's as if they vanished into colorful, gelatinized air.

It's over a week later, and they're still MIA.

I felt I'd be judged for the size of my Mountain Dew. PointlessStories

I had to stop at Walgreens to pick up some cough medicine for my daughter. I went on my lunch break, and it's been kind of a busy day, so thought I deserved a Mountain Dew for the afternoon. I went to the refrigerator case.

20 oz Mt Dew: $1.99 1 liter Mt Dew: ON SALE! $1.99

Well, I'm no math whiz but heck that's a super deal on the 1 liter! Open the door, reach down to the bottom shelf and wrestle out that big ol bottle of deliciousness.

Cashier checks out my stuff and tells me at the end to "Be Well" and I think "heck yeah I'll be well after I drink all this mountain dew!"

Drive back to work, turn off my car, then realize that I need to walk through the entire building with this monstrosity of a soda. Tried to shove it in my purse, and it didn't fit. Tried to push it into my coat, that looked weird. So I took my gloves and hat and jammed it in the crook of my arm and carried it like a football. I walked as fast as possible to my office. I don't think anyone noticed, but I still did feel the need to tell my office mate the price and that it would probably "last me a couple of days hahaha."
