Full time workers/students how do you guys get enough calories? Fitness

My schedule goes like this M-F. 7am-1130am school. Library 12-3pm. 3-630pm work. Gym after work till 8/9 pm. My question is how do i get enough calories? I have no access to a microwave or refrigerator cause i can not come back home. I usually pack lunch in a thermal in the morning but its always cold and not enough. How do you guys do it? Edit: go to a community college so literally no place for a microwave that i know of.

Stopped counting calories, not sure how to eat by hunger Fitness

Hello!

I've been counting calories for the last 3-4 years on and off, but I recently decided not to continue doing so. So now I'm trying to eat like normal people, but healthy of course.

The thing is that I'm no longer sure on how to eat by hunger. It feels like I want to eat all the time, and that I have to restrict myself not to go to the refrigerator. I want to eat even though I'm physically full. I'm also thinking about food a lot, and I've binged a couple of times.

I can't remember if I was this way before, or if I've messed up my relationship to food. Could you guys briefly describe your relationship to food? Can any of you relate or have any tips on how to overcome this, and thus solely eat by hunger?

Struggling 23/M, 5'11 190lbs Fitness

Hey r/Fitness, I'm a 23 year old male in college for an engineering degree and working a part time job in fast food. I've tried in the past to get on a diet and workout, but have always been beaten by either lack of motivation/energy or pressure from my SO to eat fast food so we dont have to cook. I've recently moved into an apartment with 3 roommates, I hardly have any space in the refrigerator but a small about of space in the freezer and as much space as i need for no refrigerated foods. I'm currently 190 at 5'11 which I've been told isn't too awful, but I'm dissatisfied with myself and can't stand the way I look. I suffer from major depression (taking wellbutrin for it at 2 150 per day) and have been struggling with meeting people due to what my psychologist has said is possibly schizoid personality disorder. I don't have a large income and most of the diets I've looked up are either too boring (for instance, one had eggs every morning, and after the first week of this I couldn't eat eggs, as in I could barely force myself to swallow them) or too vague (just balance your macros bruh). I have the 8fit app and am trying to lose 1.5-2 pounds a week, however my past normal diet may have screwed with my metabolism. I've been eating 1 or 2 meals a day ~5 days a week for 2-3 years, with the other two days being 3-4 meals a day. All the meals were typically fast food/fast dining (e.g. ihop, taco bell, sonic). Recently, I've been having difficulty eating at all, the other day I had a chicken filet biscuit for breakfast at 10am and tried to eat later but found myself not hungry in spite working an 8 hour shift at work. My current income is between 720 USD to 960 USD a month, 475 of that goes to rent and ~70 goes to my phone bill (which includes a device payment so it may drop in the future, but not soon). I typically work 2-11pm shifts on the weekend with a couple 4 hour days sprinkled in the weekdays. I think my primary problem is finding a diet thats cheap, healthy and easy, my depression makes cooking a struggle as the kitchen is almost always filthy from my roommates and I hate prolonged cooking in such a mess, but cleaning it takes too much energy for me. Minimizing dishes is also desirable, as I have a patch of contact dermatitis on my hand from a bad burn at work that becomes painfully inflamed by cleaning agents. I could really use some help.

Microwaves and potatoes/lentils Fitness

Hi,

I posted this to r/cooking and it got deleted (was not informed why) so I thought this would be the next best place. I'm a full time student and want to reduce fat and increase carbs in my diet. i have a busy schedule with travel and school so I have to use a microwave to eat at school for lunch. I usually would eat beef pasta, but I want to get into something with mashed potatoes, lentils and maybe turkey.

The only thing is I don't know how that will react in a microwave. If i want mashed potatoes, should I just put in mashed potatoes? or will that cause them to go bad? i thought maybe I could cut them into chunks, soften them up a bit by boiling and after microwaving just crushing them with a fork. the second part is lentils, which apparently have to be cooked well or they can be bad for your health - i have never cooked with lentils. would they be okay to be boiled and seasoned, put into a container in a refrigerator for a few days and be reheated in a microwave container?

appreciate any advice, thankyou

Question for people who eat a lot of peanut butter Fitness

Do u store your peanut butter at room temp or refrigerator after you open it? I store mine in pantry and I guess I'm just wondering if that makes it get more bacteria? I eat a lot of normal/fast food diarrhea causing foods that NEVER give me diarrhea, but for a snack before bed I eat a peanut butter jelly sandwich with jif creamy room temp peanut butter, refrigerated jelly, and white wonderbread, after this I will wake up 4 hours later in the middle of the night with horrible stomach pain and I will diarrhea for an hour straight, sometimes right in the bed, I have been wearing adult diapers from the pharmacy it has gotten so bad that I just kind of go in bed and continue to sleep through the smell, and I just toss the diapers in the recycle bin in the morning, I am spending a lot of money on the diapers I really can't afford them, I don't know how the hell retired elderly people afford them, I have lots of rashes too, I drink milk with it too I'm not lactose intolerant though I drink milk all the time, should I just refrigerate the peanut butter? Or maybe I'm gluten intolerant?

Car Sauna? Fitness

Kind of an odd question..

The gym I workout at is basically a refrigerator. They keep it so cold in there I can do cardio for 20 minutes before I even feel sweat beading up. By the end of my workouts I'm exhausted physically but I don't sweat much at all due to the intense AC.

I worked out in a warehouse gym in the past and it was great! Not sure of the benefits of sweating but I think it's generally good for your body as long as you are hydrated?

I live in the southeast US and its 90+ degrees outside daily right now. I've recently been taking my commute home (15-20 mins) with the windows up and no AC. I throw a towel on my seat and let the sweating begin. I'm dripping by the time I get home.

My question is whether or not this is safe while driving? I make sure to keep my hands dry constantly. I am hydrated and feel fine, but unsure of whether I might just randomly pass out or have something odd happen?

Determining raw meat weights? Fitness

I know that package labels usually list meat serving sizes in raw weight, which is what I've been doing, but I've come to question the accuracy of my measurements this week.

For example, I bought some chicken cutlets from the store that said it was 1.05lbs but when I weight the meat by itself it came out to 13.1oz (0.81875lbs).

I'm confused as to if this is an "error" on the stores part, or is this due to having the meat sit in the refrigerator or freezer beforehand? I've only had one case in recent memory that matched weights (ground beef).

Which weight should I use? It'd probably be safest to use the labeled weight, but the stated weight does not always look to be correct.

I'm hungry every 2-3 hours Fitness

School just ended, and I am 17 years old overweight weighing 185 pounds, this summer I decided to start working out, play basketball more, run, and walk more. Also, I've started to eat less since last week, cut everything, stopped drinking orange juice and start drinking more water. I've quit soda in 2 years now, my weight stayed 185 throughout this time. My meal plan is basically, Special K Protein Cereal breakfast, lunch, and my dinner is most likely gonna be either fish or grilled chicken breast, with potato and other vegies. I don't eat snacks. When I get hungry, I still control myself not to eat and junk foods in our refrigerator. My goal for this summer is to lose atleast 30+ pounds so that be about 150 pounds of my goal. Does anyone else have a better suggestion that I can do to help me lose more pounds/calories/fat w.e you wanna call it.

Additional info: I run 1 mile a day = 17.5 laps to where I run. Hoping to increase that to 2-5 miles a day. After running I'd walk for more than 10 laps, or more. Then I'd hit Exercise Bikes, spend about 30+ mins there, burning 200-300 calories. Sometimes I'd do PPLRPPL. Usually when I'm done with all that I go shoot some basketball, I sweat a lot by doing it too, I dont know if it burns some calories. I'm pretty new with this fitness stuff and Im liking it, the best part of working out/running is probably sweating. I dont know why.

How can I pack for 15 hour days and no refrigerator/microwave? Fitness

I work 2 part time jobs and usually leave my home at 9:30am and get back home at 12:30am. I work in 2 reataurants and unfortunately neither have a refrigerator I can store food in. All they have is walk in refrigerators and my managers wont allow me to store personal food because its a health code violation.

Those of you who manage to prep your food for the full day what tips, tricks and tools do you recommend?

Exercise routine for someone that's afraid to go outside? Fitness

I weigh more than the average refrigerator..... It really hurt typing that. It's disgusting and I hate everything about being fat. I've wanted to change for a long time. I have pretty bad anxiety and depression so things like going to the gym or walking outside by myself is pretty hard for me.

I know that eating healthy will shred almost all of that weight off, but I want to exercise some to help with the depression and get in shape. So what are some exercises I could do at my weight, over 300 pounds, at my own home? Thanks.

Is it OK to freeze cooked food, thaw them in a fridge, and microwave it to eat? Fitness

Keeping it short and simple:

I plan to premake my food for the entire week on every sunday. Pretty much it will consist of grilled chicken/salmon and a super large portion of salad and veggies.

This is what I plan to do with them:

1) Cook and pack them into a single serving box

2) Put the servings into the freezer

3) The night before I need to eat them, I put 2-4 servings (lunch/dinner) into the refrigerator to let it thaw.

4) I microwave my food the time when I need to eat it.

Sure the food won't hold the same taste and all, but would there be any health risks by doing this?

What non-perishable foods can help me on my next hitch? Fitness

Hey /r/fitness! I'm leaving Tuesday for a month offshore. I'm especially lucky because this boat has a gym! The only content I cannot control is the types of food I eat. I'll keep the portions in mind.

We have a cook on board that'll make our meals so it's not exactly brown rice, chicken and broccoli every day. I was wondering, besides whey protein, what foods I can bring with me in order to add fats or carbs that also don't require a refrigerator.

I can run down to the galley to use a microwave if need be but I was hoping for some insights.

Seeking some guidance for losing weight (23/6'2"/M/295lbs) Fitness

I'm 23 years old, male, and finishing up a graduate degree. I've been eating poorly and not exercising during my college career, so now I weigh around 295 pounds at 6' 2" (this is close to the most I've ever weighed, I think; I might have exceeded 300 pounds at some point). I'm trying to become healthier and am looking for some confirmation that I'm on the right track given the changes I've been making. Any advice or warnings are appreciated as well! You'll see I've included some questions below that I'd love to have answered. I tried to read a good portion of the links in the side-bar so that I don't ask anything too obvious or anything that's already been throughly addressed. I don't smoke or having any issues/disorders. I'd like to lose a significant amount of weight. I'm far from where I want to be, so for now I haven't really set a target weight...

Exercise: I've been making sure I log around 10,000 steps on my phone each day (mostly by taking study breaks to walks around campus), and my average is about 12,000 steps per day. One day per week I play tennis for an hour with a friend. He's a lot better than me so I get a pretty decent workout from that. Do you think I should be getting more exercise if I want to achieve a fair amount of weight loss? (I realize this also depends on my eating habits, so I'll discuss that in detail below.) When I was at my healthiest, it was when I was in high school and playing football and tennis and taking P.E. classes. I was still losing weight while eating about the same amount as usual.

Food/Drink: I've completely cut out sugary drinks; I drink diet soda, water, and iced black coffee rather than what I was drinking previously (lots of juice, non-diet sodas, and caramel macchiatos).

For breakfast I've been thinking about eating either low-fat cottage cheese and berries or these frozen Lean and Fit Evol breakfast sandwiches/burritos I've seen at the store that seem fairly healthy. I tend not to eat a huge breakfast, so I don't think I want to funnel too many of my daily calories into breakfast. I also don't have a lot of time to make a big breakfast when I'm getting ready for class.

Lunch is probably the hardest meal for me to figure out. I'm on campus all day and it's not super convenient for me to go home, and it's more convenient for me to not use my department's refrigerator (although I could). So for lunch I've mostly been doing snack foods throughout the late morning/early afternoon; a package of fruit snacks, reduced-fat Cheese-Its, jerky, almonds/pistachios, etc. I've been tracking these using the MyFitnessApp; I think one of my main problems was that I would idly eat tons of snacks throughout the day while doing homework/studying. The app helps me to curb that habit. Something else I think might be reasonable for me to eat for lunch is a turkey/reduced-fat cheddar cheese sandwich on whole-wheat bread. I think I've seen reduced-fat cheddar cheese, is that a thing? And do you think the sandwich for lunch seems reasonable?

I think my main problem with dinner was overeating. I would eat maybe three servings of pasta whenever I had pasta (which was at least three or four times per week, I'd say; I love pasta). So now if I have pasta I make sure it's only one serving. I used to get a lot of calories through fast food as well, but now I'm making dinner at home most of the time. The seemingly-healthier foods I like to eat include lean turkey, chicken, eggs, cheese, sweet potatoes, light soup, and hashbrowns. Foods that are high in carbs are my favorite, but I've been trying to limit my consumption of those foods. I like dairy and most fruits. Not so much vegetables, though; I don't mind them in foods such as soup, and I'm not opposed to sweet potatoes and squash. But if anyone has any ideas on how I can maybe enjoy eating vegetables more, let me know (or just tell me to suck it up and give them a chance). I make this turkey-quinoa meatloaf that I really like, but I kind of just estimate the quantities of everything; if anyone would be willing to help me adjust my "recipe," please let me know and I'll tell you how I'm currently making it! And if there are any other important foods I need to consider eating, I'd love to hear them.

I'm pretty nervous about hitting the gym (I know, I know, I shouldn't be...), but I'm thinking about going to use a treadmill there whenever it's less crowded. (When do you think that would be for a college gym? When it opens at 6am? Or 11pm, an hour before closing?) And currently the only thing I could really think to do in the gym is use the treadmill. Is there anything else I might want to consider in addition to just the treadmill?

Regarding calorie intake, I'm not sure what I should aim for. After messing around with putting different food combinations in the MyFitnessApp and seeing how it affects my daily nutrition, I feel as though I'm willing to cut quite a few calories. Can someone give me a range I should be shooting for?

Basically, any comments you have regarding what I'm doing or what I should be doing would be very much appreciated. You don't have to address all of my question. Or any of my questions if you instead have some advice or concerns about what I'm currently doing. Thank you in advance for whatever you can offer!

Squats, deadlifts, and common sense Fitness

Hello folks. I'm posting this because I see and read about so many people who are clearly interested primarily in aesthetics and have a background of being out of shape, overweight, and pear-shaped (just like I used to be!) and who are steered toward programs in which they squat/deadlift every workout. Even a lot of intermediate and advanced programs that allegedly "improve aesthetics" place a huge emphasis on squatting and deadlifting.

I think we need to apply some common sense to this approach.

I'm 31. I've been lifting since I was 17. That's almost 14 years with no breaks longer than a few weeks on a couple of occasions.

I'm naturally pear-shaped and grew up overweight. I was motivated to lift to develop my physique aesthetically. All these years I wanted to look like a beast. By that, I mean massive shoulders, chest, and back tapering to a smaller waist supported by two pillars of steel.

The reality, however, was always a bulbous butt, massive thighs, and quads that have at times strained my pant legs to near bursting. Sure, I had a relatively thick upper body as well, but I never had that aesthetic taper. At best I was a rectangle, a refrigerator. My programs have always followed what has become common wisdom from our fitness soothsayers: lots of squats and deadlifts, with the assurances that these lifts "help overall muscle development." As a result, I looked down on people who didn't squat as uninformed or uninitiated in the ways of the iron.

In my early 20s, I competed in powerlifting (USPA, 275 and supers) for several years and did fairly well. I also competed in a few strongman competitions and did fairly well. Since then and until about two years ago, I've lifted three to five days per week using different programs. All programs have been heavily squat and deadlift focused. All the experts seem to say that's the way to go.

For the past two years, however, I've been competing in endurance sports. I've done a couple of shorts triathlons, several medium-distance races, and, most recently, a full marathon.

My endurance training got so taxing on my legs that I finally had to stop squatting and deadlifting. I just couldn't recover from my long runs and leg days. I've consistently continued to train upper body two to three days per week through the basic lifts: bench (flat and incline), pullups, chinups, and rows; overhead press; and limited accessory work.

Folks, I couldn't be happier with the results. My thighs, legs, and butt have drastically shrunk. My waist is smaller (I've dropped to a 34 waist from a 38/40). I finally have a taper.

In summary, I think squats and deadlifts absolutely develop your lower half like nothing else. If you have a flat butt and/or chicken legs, you cannot skip squats. Period.

But, if you're naturally pear-shaped like me, please don't spend those endless hours squatting hoping that somehow it's going to translate into a less pear-like physique. It's not going to. Ever. Instead, your butt will get bigger, your thighs thicker, your quads fuller. Even if your upper body grows, your lower half will always keep up or outpace it.

Instead, for you pear-shaped folks, focus on getting lean and doing proven upper body work (read: pullups and bench). I wish I'd taken this approach years ago.

How many days can raw chicken (still in packaged from the grocery) can last in a home refrigerator? Also, how many days can cooked chicken (e.g., baked/broiled) can last in the fridge? Fitness

Hi All, I'm planning to cook in bulk as part of my fitness routine. With that I have 2 questions:

  • How many days can raw chicken (still in packaged from the grocery) can last in a home refrigerator?

  • And, how many days can cooked chicken (e.g., baked/broiled) can last in the fridge? Let's say you keep them in a Tupperware.
