How to formula feed BabyBumps

There's a lot of education and primers on breastfeeding, but not so much on formula feeding. So here's a primer on my experiences with it. It's not as tricky as breastfeeding, but I definitely had to look up information.

Picking a brand of formula is actually kind of easy because American (and I assume other country's) formula is tightly regulated. They're all basically the same other than the add-ons like DHA, and even most brands stock most of the add-ons. No matter what you buy, it's designed to be as close to human breastmilk as science can manage. If you have no ethical objections to cow's milk, start there (otherwise go for soy) and the off brands have the same factories making it as the major brands, so you're not missing anything other than cost if your baby's happy on it. (ETA: there is latitude in the particular blend of oils used, and your baby might tolerate some brands better than others because of that). We went for the Target version of Similac Advance because we picked it arbitrarily and it worked. Some brands have as a selling point that they're "gentle" which usually means the proteins are more processed down to their component amino acids to make them kinder on your baby's stomach. It might be worth looking into those for mild reflux, but for medical issues, I'd talk to your pediatrician rather than trust me. :D

If you have a safe source of water, there's no reason not to get the powder, other than maybe some premixed stuff for the first week if you're worried about messing up when they're little. I used tap water filtered through our refrigerator's system and it seemed fine.

Your kid will likely spit up. It will likely look like a lot. It's not actually all that much (talk to doctor if you're worried of course). Knock over a small glass of water. You'll be amazed how much it can spread. Changing brands probably won't help. As long as they're gaining well and seem happy, try not to worry. My daughter magically stopped spitting up after 5 or so months. You can try adding simethicone gas drops to the bottles. It makes all the bubbles clump up, so they pop easily rather than making a foam. It didn't seem to change things, but it also passes through the digestive system harmlessly.

You can try changing bottle types too. My daughter would suck on anything with a nipple, and we generally used the Avent Naturals. We tried Dr Browns, but I really hated dealing with the extra vents, and feeding was messier, so we stopped using those. No advice on how to introduce a bottle when they're fighting, or what to do if they're picky because mine didn't care.

We switched nipple sizes between 1 and 2 depending on what we were struggling with. We started with the size 1s, because I was also breastfeeding. At various points in the year she seemed frustrated by the lower flow or inundated by formula flowing too fast, so we switched. I could never find a good rule of thumb.

Formula volume per day is also tricky. In general, a baby won't overfeed themself, but not necessarily so if you make it a sleep crutch (like we did! Whoops). When that habit wasn't an issue, she generally stopped when she was full and if it seemed like she drained it all down, we offered her more in 2 ounce increments. We logged all her feeds so it was easy to adjust and we'd stock bigger bottles if that was an issue. Her first 6 months were all over the place in terms of volume, and we just kind of adjusted based on what she seemed to want. For months 6-12, she went to a consistent 24 ounces spread across 3 or 4 bottles, with ever increasing solid intake. I think that's not uncommon.

To prepare, we had powder dispensers we scooped the powder into each morning, and we filled up a corresponding number of bottles of water at the same time. She needed a bottle, we'd dump the powder in, shake it up, and go. Very fast process, other than occasionally spilling powder, and completely portable. Other people have said they like that strategy too. I've also heard good things about the Baby Brezza (I think it's called) and formula pitchers, but can't speak to them personally. She was fine with both cold and room temperature water, so we never worried about heating. Try giving it to them unheated at first and see if they'll go for it. It'll save you a lot of time.

Once mixed, it does go bad, especially once they've started drinking. It's like milk, so if it's out at room temperature for an hour, toss it. Same if the baby started drinking and didn't finish, don't try to save it. It looks like it's safe to keep untouched, mixed formula in the fridge for 24 hours.

We ran bottles through the sterilize cycle when we got them and otherwise we just used the dishwasher. You can use your own levels of risk tolerance on that. Well, we started by hand washing, but that got old fast. We got a net to keep the bottles from being tossed around, and a caddy for the collar and nipples. Then we got used to running the dishwasher every day. Ever since having our baby, we have a full load every day.

I feel like I'm forgetting something, so I'll edit in if I remember. Otherwise, please ask if you have questions, or chime in if you have different experiences. I know I don't speak for everyone.

My MIL is the worst one-upper I've ever known BabyBumps

She's really sweet and extremely easy to get along with most of the time, but for some reason when it comes to getting settled or starting a family, she LIVES for reminding my husband I that she had it way worse.

For example, we recently moved into the biggest house we've ever been able to afford. It's a really pretty 3 bedroom house in a nice, quiet, family-friendly neighborhood. Our furniture is limited because we've never lived in a place so big and before this, our place was furnished.

She asked me to walk through the house and send her pictures of the furniture. (She lives across the country from us). Weird, but I obliged. Then, instead of advice on finding deals, or anything normal, she textes me pictures of polariods from when she was a new mom, to point out that she had lawn furniture as a dining set.

I was annoyed, but brushed it off.

Then, I sent her a baby update. I joked that her son has been so cute and over-protective, that it's driving me nuts. She responded with "It could be worse. B's dad had me help move a refrigerator when I was very pregnant with B." (B is my husband).

Cue instant pregnancy rage.

They've been divorced for like, 10 years. B's mom is happily remarried and now VERY COMFORTABLE. I don't know why she insists on forcing us to show her that we're less well-off, just so she can remind us that "it could be worse!" and give us examples of her misery from 30 years ago.

I love her, but thank god she's across the country.

A few tips if you have a multi-story house! From 6 months out with twins. BabyBumps

My twins will be six months old next week (where did the time go?!) and I wanted to post some advice for parents with multi-story houses because we accidentally made some fantastic purchases. First and foremost, baby tax: http://ift.tt/2vyoLaq

Onto advice. While I was pregnant I decided we needed a mini fridge because I was tired of going downstairs for drinks. We bought this one: http://ift.tt/2vgA8s7

Which is actually pretty large and holds a ton. We store drinks in it for us and formula for the girls. We make two Dr. Brown's pitchers a day and stick them in there and we're good to go. It was also great while I was pumping. We kept pump milk in there, and I could stick the pump parts in a gallon bag and leave them in the fridge for 24 hours in between use.

If you formula feed: Plenty of people don't, but if you decide to follow the recommendation to make formula with hot water (powdered formula is not considered sterile so the recommendation to use hot water applies even if you use bottled water) having a water dispenser is amazing. We're all about having to do as little as possible. We bought this one from Costco: http://ift.tt/2vyaLNY

Dr. Brown's pitchers fit underneath it so we just fill with hot water, mix our formula, and stick it upstairs in the fridge.

We store bottles in our master bedroom: http://ift.tt/2vggoVC

And we wash bottles in the master bath as well. We tried the dishwasher but actual soap was pretty consistently left on the bottles so we ditched that idea. I'm not exceptionally cautious but I do draw the line at feeding the babies dishwasher detergent. So we've designated one sink in the master bathroom for bottles only and we dry them on Boon Lawns that we've put on an Ikea utility cart: http://ift.tt/2vyBHx3

People with only one baby will probably need way less drying space.

Breastfeeding, pumping, storage aaahhh BabyBumps

Hello, everyone! Sorry for the title haha I've never been good with them.

I have a three months old baby boy, Guilherme, and I'm currently doing my doctors degree; It's weird, hard, sometimes I just wanna give up everything and run to the mountains haha I joke, but it's manageable.

I recently got the opportunity to go to London for a week and a half, on the behalf of the University, everything paid by them. This trip will help me so much on my thesis, I really don't wanna let it go.

My husband is the greatest dad ever, he knows how to care of Guilherme very well (I know dads must know that, but Brazil - where we live - is a very misogynist country and most men don't care about their children), so I'm not worried about that, and he can always call his mom, or my mom if anything unusual happens haha

But here's the thing: I have a lot of milk, like a lot. My boobs went from small/medium size to large during the pregnancy. I leak, it's terrible, I have to wear those pads (or nipple diapers, as my husband likes to call them).

Breastfeeding is not a problem (it was in the very beginning, but after me and Gui got the hang of it, it was easy breezy), the problem is that if I go even 10h without breastfeeding, or pumping, my boobs hurt like a bitch.

If I go to London, I will spend 10 days without breastfeeding and I already dread it.

We never used formula, and we're not sure if we want to.

I know I'll pump as much as possible, but for how long can you storage it? I Googled it and it says three to five days in a refrigerator, and 12 months in deep freezer (of course it'll be used in much less than that - 10 days max.). Does this really work? I mean, is it good for the baby?

Another thing: while I'll be travelling, I will have to pump because otherwise my boobs would go rock hard and hurt, but this milk will go to waste; is there a place in London where I can donate this milk? I know there are maternities in Brazil that accept donations (the moms go there, sit and pump milk for the babies that don't have moms with as much milk - I go to one of these occasionally).

I'm not even sure if I'll really go. Sometimes I feel that people judge me just for doing my doctors while having a small baby, when I told some of my colleagues that I was going to go to London, I know that even though they smile and say it's great, they're judging me. I don't wanna anyone thinking I'm a bad mom.

The two people who matter the most to me are the most supportive of me, but still...

That's it, peeps! Thanks for the help!!

Don't mind me BabyBumps

I was at Walmart picking up all the things for the 4th time this week. I was struck with a hot flash fortunately near the cold food section. I literally leaned over into the hot dog bin. It was so nice but then I noticed the standing refrigerators weren't too far so I walked over to those because you know I did look a tad ridiculous in the hot dogs. I'm standing there fanning myself as a girl walks by with her arms inside her shirt like it's the freakin tundra. Oh don't mind me I'm just the crazy lady fanning myself with bacon.

Bump Retiree: My bottle review BabyBumps

Hello my lovely Bump ladies and gents. I'm 8 months out with little boy number 2 (oldest is 5 years old), and I decided this morning while preparing bottles to share a short review on the Dr Brown and Born Free bottles that we have tried recently. I breastfeed when I have the baby with me, but when I go to work, he gets bottles and I pump. I usually leave breast milk, but sometimes I mix in formula if the freezer bag is low or if my freezer supply is low. So mostly breast milk , but some formula too. Maybe this review can help you along the way:

  • With my first, I used the Born Free Classic bottles, the format of which is now out of production. It included a lid, nipple, nipple holder, a white inner cap for traveling, two parts for gas reduction, and the bottle itself. We loved these bottles. They worked like a charm. They had a lot of parts, as you can see, but it was great for us. We never needed the white inner disk cap for traveling and the bottles never leaked. I tried to find these same bottles again to add maybe 4 to our collection (due to lost parts), but I wasn't able to find them in stores or easily online. I found some on Amazon, but not enough. One dislike is that the inner gas reduction parts are sometimes hard to separate since a vacuum is created, so you have to use your nails or a fork to separate them. 7/10: Great bottles, lots of parts
  • We purchased the Born Free Breeze bottles, which were designed to be a lid, a nipple with built in gas reduction via a little sphincter looking thing, and the bottle. That's it. I thought we would like it because it was less parts. It was actually bad because the little sphincter thing (I could not find a better word) did not do its job properly, so when he sucked on it, a vacuum would be created to the point that the nipple started to collapse. We had to stop using them. 2/10: Less parts, bad sphincter (I couldn't help myself there)
  • Needing a set of extra bottles quickly, I ordered Dr Brown Natural Flow bottles from Amazon, the thin ones. They came with a lid, nipple, nipple holder, a white inner disk cap for traveling, two parts for gas reduction, and the bottle itself. I immediately threw away the inner cap because I hadn't needed it for the Born Free bottles, but I quickly realized that they leaked, so I had to buy a separate lid for traveling as the white disks couldn't be purchased separately (or at least I couldn't find them). The bottles are fine as it is. My little one is much more gassy than my first, but I don't notice a difference between these and the Born Free bottles in terms of spit ups. I do not like the thin bottles because it is hard to put crushed frozen milk into them. I normally take out my frozen milk bags the night before and put them in the refrigerator so that they partially for morning. I then use my fists to break them apart, cut the top, and then squeeze the frozen bits into the bottle. This is much more pain staking with the thin bottles, as is adding formula. I would recommend getting the wide bottles, if it fits in your diaper bag and stroller holders (give it a check first, if possible). 7/10: Decent bottle, need to keep the white disk for leak protection, buy the wide bottles
  • My dishwasher has a sanitize function, so I personally recommend the plastic bottles over glass. Less chance of dropping and breaking them
  • I bought a little basket that can hold loose parts for washing, so everything goes in there except for the kids and bottles. We put it on the top shelf of the dishwasher and try to ensure that the part below it is clear enough so that it gets good water flow. 10/10 use every day and even for stuff when the bottles end
  • I don't bother with a drying rack or anything. Most of them time it dries in the dishwasher or I shake off the water before putting it away. I also don't use the scrubber wand or anything since my dishwasher does such a good job

Feel free to ask me any questions!

Tip for ladies dealing with PUPPS BabyBumps

I'm 10 days postpartum and the rash I had on my stretch marks during the last few weeks of pregnancy has turned into full-blown PUPPS rash all over my legs. It's pretty ridiculously itchy and horrible, so I wanted to share one of my solutions for getting some relief:

I filled a piece of pantyhose with oatmeal and got it wet and now I keep it in the refrigerator. Now every time I get itchy I can pull it out of the fridge nice and cold and add a splash of cold water and rub it all over my legs. Super relieving. That in combination with steroid cream, oatmeal lotion and cold showers of course

Anyone else find some solutions?

"Meal train," casseroles, etc. BabyBumps

Hi everyone! FTM here, due in late August. We are so lucky to have many supportive friends and family members close by, and usually when someone has a baby, a friend starts a meal sign-up using a website like takethemameal.com.

This is going to sound so high maintenance... but my husband and I are both really health-conscious and we have some weird food preferences/dislikes: we both hate casseroles and anything with a creamy base like cream of chicken soup, cream of mushroom soup, alfredo sauce, melted cheese, etc. And I don't eat meat. We live in the Midwest, so casseroles are pretty standard around here.

Honestly, I know that I won't have a ton of energy for the first few days after the baby comes, but I would prefer to have some simple things around that my husband or I can make. I don't want to have a refrigerator and freezer full of stuff that we aren't going to eat.

I don't want to tell people not to bring us food, but I also don't want a bunch of food to go to waste! I feel like I'm being such a diva... Any advice? I know it's so early to be thinking about this, but this and dealing with post-birth visitors are two things that are kind of stressing me out lately.

4 weeks out from a February line jumper. Traumatic hospital birth with happy/successful outcome and product recommendations & advice! BabyBumps

Birth Story TL;DR: everything that I didn’t want to have happen, happened: 26 hour labor, vacuum assist, shoulder dystocia, cord wrapped around baby, episiotomy, had to resuscitate baby, forced placenta removal, hemorrhage. But no one needed emergency surgery and I got a cute baby :)

I was due February 13, but my little guy decided to arrive in January! Funny because I was mentally preparing myself to go late. I'm in California and took advantage of the 4 week prepartum nesting period, so fortunately I had a good two weeks at home prepping before I went into labor.

Thursday, January 26 DH and I went to a 4 hour(!) L&D class at Kaiser. We went to dinner and got home late and had sex a little after midnight right before we went to sleep. Around 1ish I felt a distinct pop. At this point I was already half asleep but definitely wondered if my water had just broken. Around 1:30 I woke up to contractions and when I got up to go to the bathroom there was a gush. It continued in the toilet and it was pink. This was concerning because at the l&d class she distinctly said the fluid should be clear, however it also made it easy to tell it wasn't pee. I was scared, nervous, and excited and woke up DH to tell him. He didn't believe me! I told him to go back to sleep. I immediately started panic nesting (doing laundry, stuff around the house, and homework for a grad class I'm taking) while timing contractions with the Contractions app on iOS. They were strong and fairly quick right from the start (about 7 mins apart). I labored for about 3 hours until I woke up my husband and told him to get ready to leave. He packed the car with the bags I had ready and ran out to grab breakfast (bagels because that's all that was open at 5am.) by the time he got back my contractions were 1-3 mins apart and I started panicking and said we need to leave NOW.

By the time we got to the hospital the contractions were very painful and still very close together. They checked me when I got in and I was only 3cm dilated and -2 station. I was in so much pain they immediately started talking epidural. I was all for pain management, but I felt like it was too early. However, an older Chinese nurse started wheeling me to a room and arguing with the other nurses and telling them I was an “early epidural”… then I found out I got the very last room before they started turning people away! So it worked out. I ended up taking Fentanyl for a couple hours and going in to the epidural around 11AM. So I held out for about 9 hours before I finally gave in. Advice: if you’re going to get the epidural, just get the epidural. It felt so weird and evolved over the course of labor… At the beginning I could feel my legs but no pain, then for many hours I couldn’t feel my legs AT ALL and I was very nervous about it. The nurses came in and would turn me onto my opposite side every hour or so and I was dead weight. But by the time I started pushing ~12 hours after getting the epidural, I could feel everything again but there was no pain.

Since my water had broken, they didn’t check me again until about 10PM. I was 10cm! Time to start pushing. I pushed for 2 hours. The doctor on call started talking about vacuum assist. I really did not want this, but after 2 hours of pushing I said let’s do it. The mom team and baby team came in and I realized this was it! Once a good contraction started, the doctor did the assist and baby’s head came out, but then he got stuck. His shoulders wouldn’t come out, plus his umbilical cord was wrapped up over his shoulder, essentially holding him in even more tightly. I think someone called a code of some kind because a rush of people poured into the room and they made my husband move way back to the corner of the room out of the way. They had a timer start and cut the cord and there was a moment where it was like time stopped… They had to get him out within minutes before… I’m not sure what would have happened! The nurses told me I had to do one more big push. I don’t even know when the doctor did the episiotomy but I’m pretty sure it was right before that. One more big push and he was out.

The worst part was they rushed him away from me to work on him, and they were trying to figure out what was going on with me. The placenta wouldn’t come out. Once they finally got it out, I started to hemorrhage. I don’t even KNOW what they stuck up there, but to make sure they got all the placenta and figure out the bleeding hands or tools of some kind went up there. It hurt worse than giving birth and felt so weird. All in all they said I lost over a pint of blood. They told me they had to resuscitate him but he finally cried, my husband went over to see him. We have the sweetest picture of the he opened his eyes for the first time… he wouldn’t open them under the super bright lights, so my husband got in between him and the lights and he opened his eyes. It melts my heart that my husbands face was the first thing he saw. After what seemed like forever, I finally got to do skin to skin with my baby.

Even though it was pretty traumatic, looking back my fears were worse than reality. It was a 26 hour labor but it went by so fast. We were in the hospital one more full day. So we checked in Friday 5:30AM and checked out Sunday around 1PM. I have nothing but amazing things to say about Kaiser. It was a very good labor & delivery experience: I felt well informed, safe, and in control, even though things didn’t go as planned.

Product Recommendations and Advice, 4 weeks later:

  • Get some of those cute newborn clothes. We had NONE because everything I read here said I wouldn’t need them. Drew was almost 8 lbs but he was swimming 0-3 size and I needed my mom to run out and buy some sleepers when we got home.

  • Get a tracker app and start using it in the hospital. It’s easy to rely on the nurses for things when you’re there, but get into the habit! I use Baby Tracker on iOS and I love it. Get the Pro version if you want to share data with other caregivers.

  • Speaking of getting in the habit, if you’re breastfeeding, get into the habit of pumping after feeding when you’re in the hospital. Take advantage of the lactation consultants and any resources you have available.

  • We have all the things for places to put baby, but I know some people don’t like clutter. We also fortunately have a baby that sleeps well. He sleeps in the Bugaboo Bee3 bassinet (on the Jolly Jumper) at night, and during the day is in the rock n play basically all day. He also has a swing someone gave me that I loathe, but DH won’t let me throw away yet. LO will probably use it when he gets a bit older. Day 4 I made DH run to buy the Snuggle Nest cosleeper 20 minutes before the store closed, but we quickly figured out his cues and stopped using the cosleeper at about 2 weeks. I still use it if I have him on the bed when I’m pumping or getting ready in the morning.

  • Wipe warmer. I ended up buying one when I realized the Amazon subscription I have for wipes was sending refill packs of wipes and I don’t want them to dry out. The warmer was only $15… I don’t think my baby cares one way or the other that they’re warm, and I just needed a place to put the wipes!

  • Bottle warmer. So great. I store breast milk in the full 6oz portions in the refrigerator, and ATM only give maybe one 2-4oz bottle a day when he’s cluster feeding at night, so I don’t want to warm the entire bag. It took many awkward trial runs and wasting of milk before I realized $16 was worth every drop of wasted breastmilk.

  • Electric Steam Sterilizer I pump after every feeding, so that adds up to about 6-8x per day. I know you can store pump parts in the refrigerator to avoid cleaning after every use, but I have everything set up upstairs in my master bedroom and bathroom so I don't have to walk all the way downstairs at night, so it's easier for me to clean after every use. I sterilize the pump parts after every pumping! Once you getinto a routine, it's not bad at all! Love this sterilizer because it fits all types of bottles, plus pump parts, toys, pacifiers, etc.

  • Even though we've only used it a handful of times so far, the Bugaboo Bee3 stroller system is freaking awesome. I found the Van Gogh edition and the bassinet on Craigslist and got the Maxi Cosi Mico 30 infant carseat and the system is so easy to convert to the different configurations with the adapters. Plus it's small, easy to transport, has a goaod feel and great fit and finish.

Edit: I almost forgot baby tax

Pay It Forward: Breast Pump BabyBumps

Hi baby bumps! I was a frequent visitor here two years ago when I was pregnant. You guys are the best. My daughter is now 15 months old...crazy how fast time goes. Anyway, I have a Madela pump in style breast pump that I used maybe 10 times (I'm a work at home mom who haaaated pumping so it mostly just gathered dust) that I would love to pass on to a momma to be who needs one. I have the pump, the refrigerator bag, the battery pack, everything it came with (except the bottles which I gave to a friend without thinking). I also have the flanges and tubes but I'm not sure if you're just supposed to buy those new as opposed to using somebody else's? PM me if you're interested. :) Thanks guys!

Nervous about my baby's gender BabyBumps

When my husband and I first found out we were pregnant we both wanted a boy. At my 20 week anatomy scan we found out we were having a little girl and we were immediately excited. We weren't disappointed at all and quickly fell in love with the idea of having a daughter, using the right pronoun when referring to her, and using her name all the time.

This Saturday we are going for a 3D ultrasound. A few weeks ago my husband said "I don't know why but I have a feeling when we go they're going to tell us it's a boy". At first I shrugged it off and told him he was nuts. I have the picture proof from my first sonogram hanging on our refrigerator! But since then two strangers have told me it looks like I'm carrying a boy, and now I'm starting to get nervous. Even though at first I wanted her to be a boy, when I found out she was a girl I was thrilled. However, now if I found out the opposite was true both me and my husband would be a little sad. Not to mention everything on our registry is definitely for a little girl.

I'm starting to get really nervous for Saturday. I'm afraid to find out the my daughter may have sprouted a penis!

Yes, I'm going to eat the whole sandwich: a rant BabyBumps

Today at work I went on a parts run to Sears to get some vacuum filters for our shop vac. On my way back I stopped by and got myself an Italian sandwich from Jersey Mikes.

I put the sandwich in the refrigerator and returned to it at break. I sat with my a couple mechanics, the it guy and the building maintenance guy. And I started eating my sandwich. It was delicious.

The IT guy has a history of being a bit of an asshole. He's totally fine solo, we have had good conversations but whenever he's around more than one person he just turns into this asshole. I've had a lot of issues with him ignoring my personal space to be funny or to bother me. He will make inappropriate jokes. He bothers everyone in some way - it's not just me.

Anyway, I'm eating my sandwich and looks at me and starts laughing. He turns to me, and I shit you not says "I just love that you're going to eat that whole thing."

It me a minute to process this. Like one, just don't comment on what people are eating unless you're a doctor. And two, don't comment on how much a pregnant woman is eating.

I said, "Yeah, I'm going to eat this whole sandwich. It's a sandwich. I'm not going to take it on a date. I'm going to eat it."

He just chuckled again and said "Yeah, I just love it."

Then, I started getting a bit defensive, "It's not like I got the huge sandwich, it's just a regular."

He just kept laughing at me. So I ate the whole sandwich - as planned. Then I took some homemade cookies my grandma made and ate them, commenting "I need something to wash down that whole sandwich."

Grumble Grumble, rant rant.

39+1 Today is induction day! BabyBumps

So many mixed emotions about this part of the journey ending...

While I'll be glad that the near constant head aches will finally dissipate, I will not miss the emotional rollercoaster that DH and I have been on (we got in a huge fight last night which ended with me sobbing hysterically into my pillow and him trying to make it better with a pumpkin pie. ).

Nothing is really totally ready for baby girl to come home to. I'm banking on her not noticing that I haven't had the time or energy to steam mop the floors or deep clean the refrigerator...

My plan is to treat myself to a cheeseburger and fries for lunch from The Habit (yum!!) and then make a pan of enchiladas for DH for dinner. Hopefully there will be time for a nice nap before we check in at the hospital at 7pm PST.

Thank you for being such a lovely, supportive sub. I surely couldn't have made it this far without you all!

Looking for support...3rd pregnancy, hopefully 2nd baby BabyBumps

So this is my third pregnancy, hopefully second baby. My first pregnancy ended around 9 wks with miscarriage with ZERO symptoms. I didn't know until I went for a dating ultrasound, there was no heartbeat. Second pregnancy was plagued by a subchorionic hemorrhage, so I bled from wk 6 to wk 18...Then I was induced at 38 wks for a calcifying cord and SURPRISE!!!!!!!! My baby has Down Syndrome! Even though all of our prenatal screenings were negative. I had at least 15 ultrasounds during that pregnancy because of the hemorrhage, no markers were found, and the blood tests were all negative. Don't get me wrong, I love my son with all of my heart, he is absolutely amazing...but what a shock. Oh, then after he was born we spend a month in the NICU because he was sick when he was born.

So here I am, pregnant again, about 6 weeks along. I got a BFP at 3 weeks!!! Having tons of pregnancy symptoms. Sore breasts, whole body aches, extreme fatigue, moodiness doesn't even begin to explain it, nausea to the max, intense sense of smell, I can't even open the refrigerator, and pelvic pain (that I never had with either pregnancy before) One odd thing is, I am still losing a good amount of hair in the shower. Is that normal?
So I have been trying to keep myself calm...but every time I go to the bathroom I am expecting blood or something weird. I am so excited for another baby, but I am just paranoid because of my past 2 experiences.
Anyone have any words of wisdom? Am I just insane? I have a very supportive husband, but I think I might be making him crazy with my paranoia...

My Refrigerator Stopped Working (RIP food and money) BabyBumps

Joy. My just-over-a-year-old refrigerator stopped cooling, but the freezer still works. I monkeyed around with it for a bit, but have decided I'll break it if I keep troubleshooting it myself (I love a good home self-repair). The saving grace is the credit card I used to purchase it adds a 1 year warranty to the 1-year warranty that came with it, so hopefully that'll cover it? (I'm skeptical of most warranty claims and haven't filed many in the past)

But the FOOD. RIP all those tasty things I probably shouldn't eat. I asked the Mr if it felt warm yesterday, and he didn't think it did. I was in a rush and he's uses the kitchen more, so I didn't pay much attention to it until my 3 am snack craving hit, and now I'm so sad because I probably shouldn't eat anything that's been sitting at room temperature in the dark for 24+ hours.

Please send me good vibes that this is actually covered by the warranty company and I'm not shelling out for a repair. I just got a new car (and payment, ugh) and this gal's poor remaining savings account needs a break!

From the other side, my work/pump schedule BabyBumps

I always appreciated it when people came back here with updates after they experienced things. I was always a little anxious about the return to work, so here's my update on that. I am going to give you every stupid detail because I had to read ten threads to find tiny suggestions :)

Background - took 12 weeks maternity leave, and my LO goes to daycare now. I work full time. EBF

Here's my daily schedule usually:

  • 6:30am - wake up. If baby is awake, I will wake husband up and they will go to her room for play/diapers/clothes. If she is asleep, I will go set her clothes out and get started downstairs and he will wake up when she wakes up. Meanwhile, I get dressed for work.

  • 7:00am - get bottles ready for the day. They're on the boon grass drying rack from when husband washed them last night. I send 5 bottles, each has between 2-3oz in them. Her first bottle is smaller. One bottle usually gets sent home, and goes the next day. To wash, I rinse then soak everything in super hot water before I go to bed, then husband washes with Munchkin sponge stick thing and sits to dry. I use sanitizer once a week or so. I put her bottles in her lunchbox with a ice pack made for cans and put it in the fridge. I put pump parts in a ziplock freezer bag and into my pumping bag.

  • 7:30am - I feed baby. Husband gets ready for work. I get pump bag, car seat, lunch box, all into one place. Baby goes into car seat. Husband comes down and puts baby in car, i load up all the goods. Off to daycare.

  • 8:15am - I get to the daycare. Give them baby, bottles (tell them when she last ate). Leave daycare. hopefully get to work by 8:30am.

  • 10:00am - Pump round 1. Inside my pump bag is pump, ziplock bag with parts and 2 bottles, mini cooler, paper towels, bump bra and sharpie. I use the same 2 bottles to pump throughout the day, after the session, i pour the milk into freezer bags with labels. Parts go back into the ziplock bag, back into pump bag, into refrigerator at work. Milk in bag goes into little cooler, into fridge at work.

  • 1pm - pump #2. Get pump bag, pump, milk into milk bag, into little cooler in fridge. Bag back in fridge.

  • 4pm - pump #3. Final pump. Get pump bag, pump, milk into milk bag, into little cooler in fridge. Bag back in fridge.

  • 5pm - leave work. drive to daycare. Get her lunch box, has 4 empty bottles (hopefully) and one she did not drink is handed to me. Drive home. Milk cooler and bottle she did not drink go in the fridge.

I give fresh milk daily and am a few days ahead of myself. So baggies of milk are in the fridge, new ones in the back. The baggies make it so much easier because i don't have to transfer milk when i get home. Milk bags also make it SO much easier to swirl in the fat the next day. lay bag on its side, squish back and forth. Fat stuck on the side? Just push it away. In bottles, if fat gets on the side and I can't get it off, I have to get a fork and smudge it, try again, repeat until it's off. I want her getting the yummy fat so it's annoying.

All the gear with brands:

  • Avent Natural 4oz bottles ( she refused bottles for a week, then decided not to starve)

  • Up and Up milk bags

  • Ameda Purely Yours Ultra Pump with their bag and cooler. I bought 4 more of their bottles, it comes with 6. If you use Ameda bags, you can pump straight to bag. Haven't tried that yet. Buy the extra parts kit for when you forget a piece at home, keep it in the car.

  • Munckin sterilizer and bottle brush

  • Medela manual pump - actually really nice, have used in the car when i have to travel locally for business. cooler with ice in the back, pump and milk go in cooler, repeat. Only done once but I was impressed.

Happy to answer any questions.

Toe stubbing/inability to open containers rant! BabyBumps

Anyone else constantly stubbing their toes? Especially as the belly is getting bigger. I seem to be getting less and less coordinated!

Had a doozy just now... Stubbed my big toe on my refrigerator door and felt the nail slightly lift - it's absolutely throbbing and has a little bit of blood at the front. Can't tell the true damage due to opaque nail polish but really hoping I don't lose the nail - ouch!!!

Adding insult to injury, I'm also having a terrible time opening containers now. Why do they make them so difficult? Definitely worse since pregnancy though. I just want my precut mixed berries, but nope, can't open container. None for me.

Toe stub for nothing ...sigh.
