I'm making a thread to cover tips and tricks to live a good life during and after a hurricane when power is out for extended periods of time. One of the biggest complaints was food and water. Everything listed below is carried at Walmart, and 99% of these items were still in stock at my local Walmart Friday before the storm.
Water
Bulking up and fighting for bottled water is a very expensive and wasteful exercise. Municipal water runs off gravity (water towers) and it does not stop working during extended power outages. It is safe to drink and cook with unless specified. There was only 1 or 2 neighborhoods in Central FL that had boil water advisories, affecting less than 100 people.
If you're still concerned about water quality, REI carries water filters that makes safe drinking water from any source. I stopped by REI in Winter Park on Friday the weekend of Irma and they had a full supply of these. That is all you need for fresh clean and safe drinking water in your life. You can filter water from lakes, puddles, buckets set out in the rain and not get sick.
Food
There's countless foods sold in our local grocery stores that are delicious that do not require refrigeration.
One of my favorite things in the world is pouch chicken breast, it's handy all the time not just during hurricanes. Any walmart carries it.
Now, think of the endless possibilities you can use that with. Do you want chicken tacos for dinner? Pouch of chicken, some tortillas, taco seasoning, maybe some onions and cilantro? Done!
One of my other go-tos is chicken couscous. Sauteed some celery, onions, carrots, make some chicken stock with a bouillon cube, add the couscous and pouch chicken and done! You have an amazing dinner.
Another one of my favorites is Fettuccine Alfredo. One pouch chicken, one packet of Knorr Alfredo Broccoli.
Want some rice that takes a minute to heat? Uncle Ben's Ready Rice. Comes in at least 10 different flavors. Make some stir fry or fried rice!
What about breakfast? Who doesn't love pancakes! Go grab some complete pancake mix that's just add water and syrup doesn't need refrigeration. Yay pancake breakfast! Want some bacon? Walmart carries precooked bacon that doesn't need to be refrigerated. Eggs? Yep, those are fine on the countertop for a couple weeks. Make some hash browns while you're at it. Coffee? Ah yes the Vietnamese Secret that all the local Asian markets carry. Or you could just go simple and eat some instant oatmeal or maybe a bagel with peanut butter and jelly or cereal.
Lunch? This is the easiest meal! Some people like to keep thing simple like a PBJ or tuna fish sandwich (buy the premade packs of tuna salad ready to eat). Maybe you want a grilled cheese, go for it! What about a BLT and some soup? Sounds delicious. Or, maybe you're into something more filling and want a italian wrap? Go for it!
You might be asking yourself but Eos, some of these things don't make sense. Cheese? Milk? Eggs? Italian meats?
Cheese can last months in your pantry, putting it in the refrigerator has only been around for less than 50 years.
Eggs? The USA is the only country in the world that puts eggs in the refrigerator, no need.
Meats for an italian sandwich? Any cured meats like pepperoni and salami do not need refrigeration.
Milk? There's powdered whole milk in the world that tastes amazing! The best is Peak but Walmart carries Nido which is the second best. Use it to make kraft mac and cheese, eat with cereal, anything that requires milk to create.
Okay, so that's some ideas. There's one thing I didn't cover is how to actually cook the food. That's going to be a case by case basis but if you have a BBQ gas grill? There you go done. If not? You'll have to secure yourself a gas cooking appliance like the staple of every Asian family to keep food warm on the dining table. If you're out of gas? Well, there's plenty of wood laying around, make a fire!
One more tip for now. How to stay cool when trying to sleep? I used one of these plugged into a portable USB battery charger from Anker that lasted all night.
