There is something so weird about glass panes on your front door. You know what I’m talking about?
Front doors should just be doors with a peephole, that’s it. Having glass panes used to be fine in my family home. We lived on a cul-de-sac that is out of the way, so we never had people walking by my door.
However, I now live in a three story apartment building, on the ground floor. People walk by my door every day.
My living room is set up with the TV against the walls of the bedroom. If you face it, you have the door on your right, but between the living room and the door, there is a white wood....cube shelves? I’m going to go with that. They came with the house, and I thought they were a stupid design choice. It reaches from floor to ceiling and spans half the room.
You can see through the shelves, and it used to bother me that I would be playing games or watching movies on the TV, and I would see a flicker of movement out of my eye. Nothing was there, and I came to discover it was because of the movements outside the door.
I had some old wall scrolls from some of my favorite anime in my room, and decided those would be the best to try and cover up some of that view out the door.
Everything went well until I moved furniture around.
After rearranging, my chair could see the door, even if my couch couldn’t.
Since I always sat on the couch, and never the chair, it was fine. My roommate would have to deal with it since he always sat there. It wasn’t my problem.
About six months after I started living there was when I started hearing the sounds. These inhuman breathing and growling sounds. They always came from the outside of my door. I would look out, and nothing is there. I would sit down, and that when the rapping on the door would start. Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Scratch……….Scratch…….Scratch.
As I walked to the door, my blood ran cold. I saw a shadow move away from the door through the panes of glass. These weren’t clear panes, but were warped and made everything wavy. You can’t make out features, and people can’t peer into your house, but you can still identify the outline of a human.
This was not a human.
There is no way to describe what it looked like. My mind could not process what was happening, and I still don’t believe what I saw. I might or might not have been drinking that night when it happened, and been inebriated in other ways. So I just wrote it off as a mind that was not functioning properly.
Playing the Playstation one day, my battery on my controller died. I had to plug it in, and the only way to get in reach of the plug was to sit in the chair.
It had snowed earlier in the week, and since I’m from Alabama, nobody knew what do with it. Everything had been shut down, and with me being sick the day before it had snowed, I had not left the apartment in a while. I think I was starting to go a bit stir crazy.
There were people moving all around. I would jump every time I saw a shadow pass by the pane of glass, jumpy after my last encounter. I thought they were people, but the pane of glass always distorted them, making them into monstrosities.
That’s when I heard it. It only stayed for a second, but it chilled me to the core.

Then….nothing.
My roommate was moving in and out of the apartment that day doing laundry, and he had chosen that moment to go move his clothes. I didn’t want to alarm him, so I let him open the door. There was nothing outside the door. However, what I saw through the door made me uncomfortable.
If you walk out our door, the one directly across from us is the laundry room. I never do laundry in the community laundry room of our building for 2 reasons. One, it is almost always locked. Two, it looks like a spider den, or some kind of place where a scene from the movie Hostel would play out. Peeling paint, exposed rafters, barely illuminated by one bulb. It’s not a very welcoming place, even when it is open. That’s why we used the building next door to wash our clothes.
However, this time, the door was open, and there was a chained refrigerator in there. I could see it chained to the wall. However, the chain that it had around it was now gone.
And it was open.
Why was that refrigerator there? Why was the door open on a snowy day like this? Why was the refrigerator chained in there, and worse yet, why was it open like that, even though it looked like it was supposed to be chained closed?
A minute passed after my roommate had closed the door. I tried to play the game and take my mind off of that strange sight.
That’s when I saw the shadow flicker in the pane once again.
I would remember that shape for the rest of my life.
The door opened…..and something stepped into the house.
It wasn’t my roommate.
