My family drinks water 99% of the time, so we use our refrigerator's filtered water on a daily basis. Unfortunately Frigidaire's compatible "Pure Source" water filter runs about $40-50, and needs to be changed every 6 months. This is typical of proprietary fridge water filters, and by the time your fridge dies, you'll most likely have spent more money on filters than you originally did for the fridge itself.
You can get the same filtered water at a fraction of the cost by bypassing your proprietary filter and using in-line water filters. In-line water filters sit between your water line and fridge, and installation is very simple. They typically cost between $5-15 and even the cheap ones are rated for use for 1 year or 1,500 gallons.
Installation video for reference. (Not me in the video. Also note, he cuts the water line a little to close to the fridge. I would have left a little more line to work with.)
