400 lb 65 y/o Type II Diabetic & life long food addict, Soylent effects Miraculous soylent

On day 2 had to stop "quick acting" insulin. Day 3 had to cut "long acting" insulin by 1/3. Beginning day 4 tomorrow. Using 1000 cal of Soylent 1.4 as sole source of nutrition plus vitamins. Feel good. Was doing 2 16 oz doses daily. Have started 4 8 oz doses daily & seem to prefer that. Body is switching from carbohydrate to fat metabolism currently. As a retired Medical Technologist am keeping a close eye on things. Blood glucose values are GREAT. As a life long food addict have yearned for a product like this for decades (I figured Purina would come out with it). Have refused doctors requests for "Bariatric Surgery" THIS WAY IS MUCH BETTER!!!!!!!!!!! Doctors need to become knowledgeable about Soylent, especially Endocrinologists (Diabetes Doctors) Cannot say thanks enough to Rob Reinhart.

Had to reduce my Insulin yet again. Before Soylent I was taking 180 to 240u Daily HS (hour of sleep) of "Humulin N" Day 2 reduced to 120u HS Day 4 was difficult to get through I was uncomfortable & mentally foggy. Reduced insulin to 90u HS. Day 5 feel MUCH better with reduced amount of insulin. Morning Blood Sugar (glucose) value 80mg/dl IT DOESN'T GET BETTER THAN THAT!!!!!

June 23,2015 Day 7 completed 1st week of exclusively Soylent @ 1000 cal/day BUT realized 28 days does not a month make. Therefore it's necessary to eat "normal" food 1 day/week. Had "food fantasies" the 1st several days on Soylent dreaming about what I WOULD eat on 1st "Soylent free". But having seen the reality series Survivor I know you can't have a "Thanksgiving dinner" after a 7 days of 1000 cal/day without getting sick in the process so I knew I had to be careful. Day 8 had a new "steakhouse burger" (1st burger Mc Donald 's ever made that tasted good to me) and "beef& broccoli" from my local Chinese takeout place. Both eaten at home due to being afraid how my body would react "in public". Then decided based on feedback in in this forum from MENTALNOMAD feeling constant gnawing hunger will now consumer a pouch (2000 cal) of Soylent daily.

June 25, 2015 Day 9 Have started 1 pouch/day regimen. NO GNAWING HUNGER. (thank goodness)

June 27, 2015 Day 11 Switching to 2000 cal spread out over the course of a day has played havoc with with my glucose values. Consequently it's been a VERY difficult ride medically, physically and mentally. Part of the issue is the insulin. I was having high levels of glucose at throughout the day but then too low during the night. So starting today I'm taking 1250 cal of Soylent plus 1 scoop (120cal) of a protein supplement and my quick acting insulin. Then at HS (hour of sleep) 250 cal of Soylent plus my long acting insulin. Hopefully the extra protein will stave off the hunger. Have to find a mix of Soylent, insulin, hunger that I can live with for the longer term. Have been experiencing muscle cramping, legs, abdomen now arms. June 29, 2015 Day 13 Mon. I switched a couple of days ago to using 2 1/2 servings (500cal+500cal+250cal Soylent+120 cal (1 scoop) protein supplement) at around 1630 (4:30pm) preceded by an adjusted dose of my fast acting insulin and 1/2 serving(250cal) of Soylent around 2130 (9:30 pm) followed by an adjusted dose of my long acting insulin. So far morning glucose (blood sugar) readings have been 82mg/dl and 77mg/dl while HS (hour of sleep) readings have been 125mg/dl and 125mg/dl. This is a little better than what I was getting before Soylent with "regular food". This regimen of Soylent is MUCH more tolerable for me medically, physically and mentally. To be continued... Well the first week was really REALLY rough. physically and MENTALLY. The 2nd week was difficult. again physically and MENTALLY. The 3rd week was a BIG difference. I am now on a fat metabolism. My VA Dr didn't feel she could comment on Soylent so she set me up with a nutritionist who read about it on the web going into not only the "nutrition panel" but the sources of the ingredients as well. Her verdict? "It's PERFECT"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She said at my size and weight I need 120 grams/day of protein. She also suggested I increase the fiber a little (4 measured tsp of KONSYL original formula 5 gm/tsp of Dietary Fiber PER pouch of Soylent. Walmart sells this stuff. Previously my Gastroenterologist recommended this product. (Metamucil only has 3.5 grams) So to pump up the protein I use 1 Soylent scoop of OP (Optimal Nutrition Gold Standard Whey powder) and 2 boneless skinless chicken tenderloins 1 1/2" tapering down to 1/4" (4" long) using a trick from Overeaters Anonymous I smear a little mayo on both sides and cook for 20 min @ 4oo degrees on a countertop digital oven. She also said it was ok to eat a package of NON starchy veg. I get the pkg of veg from Sam's Club 4 lb $5.99 and eat a pkg a day with "I can't belive it's not butter " the spray. ZERO calories!!! The veg are 30 cal (but I eat the 16 oz bag so that's 157 cal. The 2 chicken tenderloins are 99 cal each and have 20 grams of protein. gives me 92 grams of protein/day and next Wed I'll go to Sam's Club and get the Whey powder they sell which has 30 grams per scoop of protein. Then I'll be up to 120grams /day. So this way one pouch of Soylent lasts me 2 days (living on Social Security that's important). I do this for 7 days and on the 8th day I eat regular food. WHATEVER I want.!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is CRITICAL to me doing this regime for the long term. Then I start all over again. July 17, 2015 30 days of Soylent completed.

I LOST 21lbs!!! (portion of which is water weight) Without exercising, which I plan to do when I get lower. I can take a shower without periodically stopping due to getting out of breath. I can reach my feet to wash without a long brush. Yippppppppeeeeeee. I can walk (for short distances) without my walker!!!!!!!!!!! Bless Rob Rhinehart.

Currently I have no goals concerning real food other than as a life long food addict I have no desire nor am I ready to give it up completely. I look forward to the 8th day of being able to eat whatever I want for one day. Since I am now on a "fat metabolism" eating regular food for just one day won't switch me back to a "carbohydrate metabolism". (and hopefully Soylent 1.5 won't either). July 28, 2015 Tues Saw my Diabetes Doctor today. My Hgb A1c went from 6.8% to 6.2%. (fellow diabetics will understand the significance of that). I explained I had to cut one form of insulin in half and the other by 2/3. I then explained how Soylent has transformed my life. Needless to say he was very happy using words like "fabulous". AND he kept the information about Soylent that I brought him!!! 7/29/15 Wed. Saw my Primary Care Dr today. After going over my lab results he lowered the strength of my Simvastatin from 40 mg to 10mg because my Cholesterol had gotten too low! (normal values for diabetics are more stringent than they are for the normal population), then I brought up my Soylent regime. He wants to monitor my labs closely (which is fine with me) and after reading the Soylent nutrition label and the description about the Soylent nutrition advisor Dr. F. Xavier Pi-Sunyer, M.D, he called in his wife (also an MD) to show her. It seems as though she trained with or under Dr. F. Xavier Pi-Sunyer, M.D in St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York and lived across the street from the hospital! I live in FL. Small world. They kept the printouts I gave them. HEY ROB COME OUT WITH AN INFO PACKET FOR DOCTORS please. My strategy is first go over the lab results and weight loss, then show them the Soylent info and explain my Soylent regimen. I'm not asking for permission to use Soylent nor do I want a "debate" I'm just explaining what I'm doing. Period. So far positive support and "cautious optimism". Aug 7, 2015 1 month and 21 days, I can now use the seat belt in my car. My belly no longer rests against the steering wheel, In fact it's 2 inches plus from it. I can also wash my feet/ toes directly without the use of a 3 foot long pole brush. Aug 7, 2015 Created Excel spread sheet which calculates... Total Protein grams per day, per ingredient and per Soylent serving (with extra protein powder and chicken),

Total Fiber grams per day per ingredient and per Soylent serving (with extra fiber powder), Total Calories per day per ingredient and per Soylent serving (with extra protein powder, fiber powder and chicken), Total Cost per day per ingredient and per Soylent serving (with extra protein powder, fiber powder and chicken). Tried to post it here as jpeg but it wouldn't take it.

Aug 12, 20015 Things have evolved yet again. I now place 4 measured tsp of Konsyl fiber (5 grams dietary fiber per serving + 1 scoop OP (Optimal Nutrition Gold Standard) Whey protein (24 grams/scoop) + 2 scoops Premier Protein (30 grams/scoop) in 1/2 water filled Soylent pitcher & shake for 30-45 seconds. Then I add one pouch (a day's supply) of Soylent and shake again for 30-45 seconds. I then (as per Soylent instructions) Fill the Soylent pitcher completely up with water and shake for another 30-45 seconds. I then place it in the refrigerator for the next day. The following day I have 1 full serving of Soylent (500 ml approx 16 oz) then I have I pkg (16 oz ) of NONstarchy vegetables and 2 boneless skinless chicken thighs seasoned with coarse ground pepper and cooked @ 400 degrees for 30 min on a countertop digital oven (thighs come out so much juicier and tastier than breast meat to me). Then later I have another 500 ml (16oz) of Soylent. The only other thing I consume is a gallon of water and Walmart's version of "Crystal Light" plus my meds & vitamins. I do this for seven days. On the 8th day I eat whatever I want (the bottom line is I am a life long food addict so I NEED that 8th day.) It is soooooo much easier now than the first 2 weeks!!!!!!!! Looking forward to see how much weight I've lost on the 17th of this month now that the "water weight" is gone and I haven't started any real exercise regimen yet. Any "milestones" or significant events will be posted here prn (as needed) for others contemplating the Soylent journey.
