TIFU by not buying the extra insurance on a U-Haul. tifu

Technically this happened on Valentines day but I found out today that none of our possessions would be covered.

I provide for my wife and 2 kids on a $33k per year salary. We are on a tight budget for everything which included the U-Haul. We found a way to move from a 2br apartment in a bad neighborhood into a 3br house in a decent neighborhood and made it happen. After several issues during the process, we were finally able to move our stuff to the house at about 3 pm on valentines day. I pulled the truck up out front and maintenance was still parked in the driveway, so I parked in the street, which is a 4 lane road, and switched the hazards on. I walked up the driveway to ask them when they were going to be done and before I could say more than a few words someone slammed into the back of the U-Haul. We had to pay someone $250 to get the door open so we could unload and see the damages which were pretty extensive. The guy driving the vehicle didn't own it, was on a suspended license, and appears to be an all around loser. The owner of the vehicle said the guy didn't have permission to drive the vehicle, no one did, and it was not insured. My insurance company doesn't cover physical possessions so my only option is to sue the driver, who, has no job and has essentially disappeared. Today I had to tell my wife that because I didn't buy the extra insurance on the U-Haul, we get to replace or try to rebuild our couch, refrigerator, washer, 5 of 6 dining room chairs, a computer chair, and my grill.

TL;DR - No insurance on U-Haul, hit by uninsured driver, lost furniture, time, and money.
