Advice on aging "hoppy" craft brews? beer

For whatever reason I've been, what some would call, cursed with an inability to enjoy even moderately hoppy beers. (For example tasting Stone's Stout at the brewery in SoCal and Boulevard's Dark Truth in MO both left me with a face akin to a cat with a brainfreeze) As a last ditch effort to normalize myself to the piney/grassier side of the pint, I'm contemplating getting a small refrigerator to age brews that I can't quite handle. After ~an hour I've found plenty of advice for decreasing bitterness in homebrews, but not much on aging small packs from the local liquor stores. Any special advice from you lads? Or is it basically the same as aging homebrews?

Need help with my beer storage. beer

So ive been storing by beer in a refrigerator for a bit more than 2 days now, and realized that the lamp is always on. I know flourescent bulbs and blue light can skunk beer. I was wondering if anyone here could help me with the chances my beer is/will get skunked in the future. got a couple of pictures here to show http://ift.tt/2gPrw20 . Unforunately due to a tooth extraction i cant consume alcohol for the time being so tasting them is out of the question. I also dont know if the bulb in question is flourescent. Thanks!

Dumb question: Does refrigerating and then removing a beer from the refrigerator have any negative effects? beer

Basically, have been holding a special brew in the closet for a while, and decided to put it in the fridge overnight as I'd planned on drinking it tonight for a special occasion. It's not going to work out to drink it tonight, but wanted to make sure there wouldn't be any negative impacts if I removed it to age in the closet again. Thanks for any help!

How to store Unibroue beer? beer

Just bought Unibroue's La Fin du Monde 750 mL bottle for a friend's housewarming present (apparently their favorite, I've never tried it) - I'm going to their place in about a week and a half. The bottle is obviously unopened, so my question is, do I store it in my refrigerator or just in my cabinet? I bought it from the store where it was refrigerated if that makes a difference.

Bought 6 Dogfish Head 120's but I live in a hot apartment. What should I do? beer

I have been looking for a 120 for 4-5 years, so when a local store recently got a shipment in I bought the 4 I was allowed to and had my girlfriend go pick me up 2 more. The only problem is that we live in an apartment that gets kind of hot, so I'm worried about trying to age the beer. Also, we'll be moving in about a year and a half so if I'm able to age the beers in the refrigerator at some point they'll probably have to come out.

So my questions are:

  1. Can I age these bad boys in the fridge? I want to try at least 1 fresh, but I definitely want to age some if I can.

  2. If I age them and then move, would a cooler be sufficient for the likely 7-10 hour drive, or would dry ice be needed?

Thanks in advance

Feedback for a unique magnetic bottle opener I designed beer

I designed a bottle opener really like how it turned out, so I am working on a Kickstarter project and would really appreciate feedback from some beer enthusiasts, /r/craftbeer was really helpful when I posted yesterday.

The idea was to make it small but easy to use, it sticks to any magnetic surface due to a strong rare-earth magnet, so it sits nearby on the fridge, side of a grill or patio furniture until it’s time to enjoy a beer. Thanks.

http://ift.tt/2aWk4h5

*EDIT: Thank you all for your help, I have already made some changes to the layout of my Kickstarter project. Two things frequently brought up are small=lost and adding a key chain hole. I did think about these while designing but realize I need to address this in the campaign. Regarding the key chain hole, the fun things in the video don't work if keys are attached and you wouldn't attach your key chain to your refrigerator. Also, I have never lost one, maybe its because I stick it right next to my drinks (near your cooler or on your refrigerator), therefore its in a 'safe spot'. I have a lot to think about, Thank you all!

**If you are interested please find me on facebook where I will post updates.

How long will an unopened growler last in the refrigerator? beer

How long will a 64 oz growler with a generous amount of tape around the top last in the refrigerator? Is there a general ballpark before it will start going flat? Thank you.

Aging Belgian Beers - Advice Needed beer

I went to Belgium over Christmas and brought back some beers (mostly lambics) and I'm beginning to worry about freshness. Are there some I shouldn't be sitting on? Which ones can/should I age and for how long?

Here's a picture of them together, and here's the list:

  • Lindemans Oude Gueze Cuvee Rene Special Blend 2010
  • Cantillon Rose De Gambrinus
  • Cantillon Kriek 100% Lambic Bio
  • Cantillon 100% Lambic Bio
  • Cantillon Grand Cru Bruocsella
  • Gueuzerie Tilquin Stout Rullquin
  • Gueuzerie Tilquin Oude Gueuze Tilquin à L'Ancienne
  • Drie Fonteinen Hommage
  • Drie Fonteinen Oude Kriek
  • Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze Golden Blend
  • Drie Fonteinen Oude Geuze
  • Brouwerij Boon HORALs Oude Geuze Mega Blend
  • Abbaye Des Rocs Grand Cru Belgian Special Brown
  • Westvleteren XII
  • Boon Oude Geuze Mariage Parfait
  • Oud Beersel Oude Kriek Vieille
  • Girardin Gueuze 1882 (Black Label)

I found this thread on BA, but it's left me just as lost as before. You can assume all beers were bottled in 2015. All bottles are sitting in my refrigerator (I don't have a cellar).

Looking for advice on buying an entry-level cooler for long-term storage. beer

I'm considering getting one of these two guys:

Wine Enthusiast 32-Bottle

NewAir 28 Bottle

And this is everything on Amazon that looks like it might fit my needs.

Anyone have any advice on purchasing one of these? Or any other cooling unit? I'd like to stay around the $300.00 price point. It doesn't have to be dual-zone, I want the whole thing to stay around 55 degrees I think, mostly for aging stouts.

I'm in Texas, most of the time ambient temperature in my house is around 75 degrees.

I'd appreciate any advice at all.

Decided to pick up the Guinness Nitro IPA, but I can't tell what temperature to serve it. Any suggestions? beer

I know it's not the most well liked beer on the internet, but I have it and I'd like to enjoy it.

My options are: room temp, basement (about 50 degrees), or refrigerator

I was thinking that since its a nitro it shouldn't be too cold, but I haven't been able to find any information about it.

A Pretty Canary in the Coal mine beer

The demise of Pretty Things may be the canary in the coal mine for microbreweries that depend on the three tier-distribution model for the majority of their profits as well as those breweries that utilize large format bottles (bombers and 750ml) and those breweries that do not operate a tap room.

Since prohibition the three-tier distribution model has been used by most states for distributing alcohol from producer to consumer. In this model, the producer (brewery) sells the product to the distributor, the distributor sells the product to the retailer and the retailer sells the product to the consumer. The distributor and the retailer each take 30%-40% for handling the product. A microbrewery selling a $10 bottle of beer generates approximately $4 a bottle of revenue for the brewery in the three-tier distribution model.

In addition to the apparent economic inefficiency, with the three-tier distribution model the brewery loses control over quality control measures such as storage conditions and shelf life. For example, a brewer may print “Keep Refrigerated at all times” on every case of beer, but the brewer cannot be sure that a retailer will not leave a pallet of beer on their loading dock in the sun. Likewise, unbeknownst to the brewer a distributor could send out half a pallet of beer from a previous year’s batch that they found buried in their warehouse.

Retailers are stocking greater amounts of product from micro-breweries. With more products on the shelves, barring a quality inventory control system or high sales volume product may inadvertently languish on shelves unsold for long periods of time. Over time, some of those bottles of beer sit on the shelf long enough that there is a coating of dust on the bottle. When a consumer gets a bad bottle of beer the brewery takes the hit regardless of who was responsible for the condition or age of the bottle.

Large format bottles are optimized to provide the maximum amount of beer to the consumer at the lowest cost (bottle and case volume). As the alcohol content of micro-brewed beer has crept up over time, it has become a commitment to drink a large format imperial stout or barley wine. These beers are not the “go to” beer you have in the refrigerator. These are ‘special’ beers served when like-minded friends gather and on special occasions. This naturally limits the amount of beer any one individual will purchase.

How can a microbrewery increase the margin, quality and serving size?

In many States microbreweries are allowed to sell product directly to consumer in their tap-rooms without handing over a cut of the sale to a third party. Since the brewery controls the tap room, the brewery controls the quality. This also provides the consumer a greater choice of offerings.

Beer is a very personal experience and different breweries attract specific types, or profiles. For these folks, an important part of the experience is sitting around talking with each other and with the brewer. When these opportunities are fostered, communities tend to build up around the micro brewery. Like minded folk are attracted to the styles, flavors, personalities and culture of a brewery and in many cases, the brewer(s). When there is a physical space for these communities to gather they grow and the business flourishes. Absent a physical location, brewers organize tastings, pub crawls and beer launch events. These events require extensive coordination and planning and by their very nature are ‘special events’. The camaraderie and loyalty inherent in communing in a specific location is difficult to replicate when opportunities to convene are sporadic.

When breweries have tap rooms consumers freely interact with the community. Events are scheduled and held at the brewery, and the tap room serves as a drop in center for a community whose nexus is the beer. Without a tap room, a small brewery must hand over profit and quality control to third parties and forego the necessary community support to be viable business.

Best beer refrigerator? beer

I'm looking to get something small that I can put in a bedroom or in a corner of the kitchen, nothing huge. Ideally it'd be attractive so that the beer experience for my guests is incredible from start to finish.
