I'm trying to figure out what kind of microphone to use and how to use it, but I thought I'd share my handiwork with you guys, in case there are other masochists out there who play an all-metal resonator.
Construction was surprisingly simple for this one. I improvised the whole thing, pretty much.
Determine that your guitar is ferrous (i.e., put a refrigerator magnet on it and see if it sticks).
Determine the thread size of a standard microphone clip. In the US, I know it's 5/8".
Get your materials:
a. Edging block. This will be found in your home depot/lowes/whatever in the building supplies section where they put the finished lumber that you find around the bottom edges of walls. I got the smallest one I could find -- in pine.
b. Two (preferably three) neodymium magnets with ring tops. I used the kind that have a little carabiner clip, then just removed the carabiner clips.
c. Some half-inch wood screws
d. 5/8" bolt of desired length. I used a 3" one, may go get a 2" one if 3" is too far.
e. 5/8" washer and nut
f. Power drill: get a 5/8" spade-tip bit AND a 3/4" or 1" spade-tip bit. The key here is that you'll want to be able to drill out a housing for the top of the bolt.
g. clamps (to hold the thing down while you're drilling it, because it will try to skitter away.
Drill your 5/8" hole through the middle of the wood block. Clamp that sucker down as best you can, and have a good sized hunk of wood under it.
Now use your larger spade bit to drill the housing for the top of the bolt. Don't drill all the way through, though. Just about a half-inch down.
Take the clips off of your magnets, and very carefully screw them into the block using your half-inch wood screws. I used one on either side, but I'm going to add a third magnet to increase the stability.
Now put your bolt through the hole, put the washer on top, then fasten the nut onto the bolt.
You should be ready to go now. Just find the right microphone and get to work.
