Is it possible to live in a van without any refrigerator or ice cooler? vandwellers

I would like to live in a van, and store food, without any refrigerator or ice cooler. I want to keep things as simple as possible. But would this be a smart idea? I would buy foods like bread, bananas, raisins, apple sauce, and canned goods. But would these go bad in very hot summer weather? Let me know if this is a smart idea, or what alternatives you can think of besides having a fridge or a chest that needs ice. (I live in the Northeast).

Dometic Portable Fridge or ISOTHERM Boating Fridge? vandwellers

Hey guys! I've been doing my research on refrigerators for a while now and have narrowed it down to two different kinds of fridges.

This first one is the Dometic CFX-50W 49 quart Portable Refrigerator. The price on Amazon has fluctuated between $600-700. It is 48lbs and is 9,438 cubic inches. I know this is a popular choice among van dwellers, and originally I was pretty set on this one.

However, I stumbled across the ISOTHERM Cruise 65 Refrigerator, which is built for boats. It holds 68.8 quarts, costs $730, weighs 40lbs, and 7,218 cubic inches. The game changer for me is that this fridge opens from the front, which means I can use the top as extra counter space.

Basically, I am wondering why more van dwellers don't use this refrigerator as an option? It's lighter, smaller, stores more food, has a freezer compartment, and opens from the front. I've seen it used in vans once or twice before, but don't understand why it isn't the most ideal fridge for van life.

If anyone has any insight on this it would be greatly appreciated!!

[Question] lots of 'no refrigerator' tips&tricks, what about not having a stove? vandwellers

I'm too lazy to use my stove and really don't have room for it.

These are my basics/core foods for no refrigeration and no cooking - * Tuna/oysters and crackers (any canned fish) * peanut butter sandwiches (with Nutella and bananas) * chips, cheese-its, * most fruit

Anything to add to the list?

Where can I buy freeze dried veggies?

Or any tea-light meals? Or alcohol stoves setups that can work in a small space?

P.S. However I do have a 12v immersion water boiler that can make me ramen or hot oats, and even boil eggs. If you can think of anything else that could be made with a couple cups of boiling hot water, please share. I'd like to try pasta and spicy red sauce: Barilla makes these pre cooked packages of pasta now for like a dollar. That with some tomato paste, other veggies, added to the water once boiling would make a nice single serving meal.

Question about Solar Power/Getting Started vandwellers

My partner and I are planning to convert a cargo trailer to a camper over the next few months. I have a job that allows us to travel, we are tired of paying rent, etc. We camp a lot and would like to get into something a little more comfortable than a tent. It is also a pain to pull everything in and out of the truck every time we want to go somewhere else. We are choosing a cargo trailer for a couple of reasons- I have a truck I am not willing to give up so a van won't really work for us and we don't want anything excessively large but the only small rvs we have found are incredibly expensive.

I have the tools and the hands on experience to feel confident converting the trailer in every area except electrical. I have electrical experience, but not when working with a limited supply of power. Ideally the trailer would run solely on solar power. We typically stay on BLM or nation forest lands, so we rarely have the hookup ability. I've looked through a ton of videos and posts, but so far I haven't gotten a good answer on how to get started here.

We want to have a small refrigerator, lighting, the ability to charge phones and laptops, and occasionally run a small fan. I also have a a desktop computer I would ideally like to have with a 460 watt psu- I don't know if this is doable with solar panels. I could purchase a low power monitor if the desktop is feasible. We have gotten used to not having a hot water heater or heating/cooling and prefer to move around to suit the season. We will be using propane for a stove. Let me know if I'm forgetting anything else.

Any suggestions, tips, or tutorials would be much appreciated.

Edit: When I say I have electrical experience, I should clarify that I have a job where I work with small autonomous machines. This experience doesn't necessarily carry over to solar panels and refrigerators.

I'm assuming this person is running a scam where they ask for the money to be wired, but never deliver the car? I'm curious how they would respond if I asked to come check it out in person. Is it possible I can play a long as if I will send the money and get them in trouble with police?

Need help with choosing a van vandwellers

I live in the northeast US and have a budget of $10000 (loan). I'm looking to buy something that will comfortably accommodate me and my wife, full-timing, for 1 year. After that, I will be upgrading to a Sprinter.

In the meantime, I need help determining what the best bang for my buck is. I intend to have:

  • A futon-style bed (to work on laptops and sleep in the same space)
  • A sink
  • A cooking area
  • A small refrigerator
  • A battery bank (tied to alternator and solar panels)
  • Food storage
  • Clothes storage
  • Basic vehicle storage
  • Enough space to put 1 gas scooter (50cc), or 2 electric bikes

Additionally, it needs to be stealth, since I work in the city. I'd prefer to be able to park in normal parking spaces. Standing up is not a priority.

Given this info, what would you say is a good brand and year?

Thinking about crossing over vandwellers

I found a 1978 short chevy that I think has made me smitten. It says the 350 has been rebuilt, it has a convertable sofa bed, a refrigerator and shag carpet on the floor and ceiling. Im getting evicted by the new owners of my apt for renovations and am just thinking about living in that coze adobe instead of dealing with this expensive bullshit town. Any info to know about that model ahead of time (before i buy) or experiences with that is most appreciated! Thanks.

Would it be possible to eat moderately healthy on the road without a stove or refrigerator? vandwellers

Obviously it wouldn't be the most palatable diet in the world, but could you do it and still be healthy? I don't mean living on burger king or quiznos, I mean buying packages of almonds, hazelnuts, raisins, peanut butter, beef jerky, pepperoni, canned fruits/vegetables/fish, granola, trailmix, oatmeal, cliff/lara bars etc. Just a strictly plug&play kind of diet. And how much would it cost more a month to do it over cooking from scratch?

Van buying question vandwellers

Hello all, me and my wife are considering our first van. A 2011 170" high top sprinter van. It has the following modofications:

-Diesel, 18-20 mpg, mostly highway miles

-BFG KO2/TA tires + spare with ~6K mileage (winter/off-road tires with great traction)

-Kitchenette, Queen bed, dinnete, tons of gear storage + bike racks

-back-up camera and upgraded pioneer stereo w/ bluetooth

-passenger swivel seat

-Ikea latex mattress with custom aluminum bed frame

-2X 100-watt Renogy Solar panels with MPPT charge controller

-2 6V Full River AGM house batteries -2000 watt inverter

-3 gfci outlets, usb charger next to bed (2X)

-LED strip lighting with remote

-LED lights with dimmer

-isotherm elegance 85 refrigerator and freezer (super efficient, easily runs off solar)

-Large stainless steal sink with shurflo aquaking pump -Shurflo aqua king pump

Brand new engine installed and warranties by mercedes benz for the next 3 years! Only ~3K miles on it.

It has 250,000 miles on it, and the asking price is 55k.

We would add an: awning, shower, and heater to it. We have been looking for some time, and went to see it yesterday. We would need to test drive it, as well as have a mechanic look at it. I am an engineer and pretty handy, and my father in law is a carpenter, so our original plan was to build our own, but this has almost everything we want. The tipping factor for me was that it was a passanger fleet vehicle in its previous life, lived in Florida and California, away from salty winters, and all work has been meticulously filed in a binder with receipts and records and warranties for everything, with all work done by dealerships.

Please let me know of I am about to make a terrible decision, as well as how any of you avoided sales tax.

Refrigerator in a van. What do you guys recommend? vandwellers

I plan to start van life in probably about 3 years during my gap between getting my Associates Degree and my Masters Degree in Aerospace Engineering. And if college means anything these days, it means that I am, and still will be, broke.

So I was wondering what people used as a refrigerator? Everything I've found so far is so expensive. Have you guys found a cheaper solution (other than not having one)?

I'm not sure what size would work best. Preferably something that would fit between the drivers and the passengers seat and be able to hold basic food and a drink or two. I'm hoping to have saved enough to buy a 70's VW T2 bus because I love their character. So if you have any other recommendations on that general size of vehicle I'm open to any and all suggestions!

I'm excited to join the van life and research it during almost every second of free time I have. I figured this time it would be smart to ask a great community for advice.

Insulation and Hot Weather: The Science of Thermodynamics vandwellers

The science of heat flow is called “thermodynamics”, and it has been an active branch of physics since the early 1800s. It involves a lot of mathy formulas, but in essence the entire science of thermodynamics can be boiled down to one simple statement: heat always flow from high-temperature areas to low-temperature areas, and never flows from low-temperature areas to high-temperature areas (unless you add energy to the system to move it mechanically—which is what an air conditioner and a refrigerator do).

So what does that mean for a van? It means that any time that the temperature outside the van is hotter than the temperature inside, the heat will always flow into the van from outside, and will never flow from inside the van to the outside. Conversely, if the temperature inside the van is higher than outside, the heat will always flow out of the van to the outside, and will never flow into the van. Heat will always flow from hotter areas to cooler areas, and the bigger the temperature difference, the faster the heat will flow. And whether the heat is flowing from inside the van out, or from outside the van in, the final result is always the same: the two temperatures will eventually equalize, and the heat will stop flowing. If it’s zero degrees outside, your van interior will cool down to zero degrees; if it is 95 outside, your van will heat up to 95.

That process is inevitable; the heat will always flow from hot areas to cold until the two temperatures are the same. Everything in thermodynamics follows directly from that simple reality.

But of course in a van the situation is even worse: the metal shell of the van gets heated by the sun many degrees above the actual air temperature, and it then radiates this heat into the van’s interior. When a metal box radiates heat into its interior, we call it an “oven”. This radiated heat then raises the interior temperature of the van above that of the air temperature outside. In theory, this should mean that heat will now begin to flow from high-temp area to low-temp—i.e., from inside the van to the outside—and cool the van down. And in fact many people believe (mistakenly) that this is what happens—that the van “lets the heat out”. But in reality, the heat energy that is constantly being radiated into the van from the sun-heated metal skin is far greater than the heat loss from the air in the van to the air outside—which is why the inside of a van is always hotter than the outside during the day, but drops to equalize with the outside temperature as soon as the sun goes down.

So, how does “insulation” affect all this? Well, in two completely different ways, since there are two completely different types of “insulation”.

The first type is the ordinary wall insulation, usually made from foam panels or spray-on insulation. This type of insulation works by using trapped air to slow down the transfer of heat energy from one area to the other. But—and this is crucial to remember—insulation does not, and cannot, alter the direction of that heat flow. The heat will still flow from the hotter area to the cooler area and will never flow from the cooler area to the hotter—no matter how much insulation there is between them. On a hot summer day, your insulation will never “let the heat out”: heat will always be flowing from the outside of the van to the inside. Insulation delays this process and slows it down, but it does not stop it or reverse it. That means the heat will always get in, and the hotter it is outside, the faster the heat will get inside your van. If you put an insulated van and an uninsulated van next to each other all day, you will find that the insulated van will be cooler inside at first, but by the end of the day the heat flow will win, and both vans will equalize with the outside temperature: they will both be just as hot inside. So unless you are actively cooling the air inside the van (and that requires an air conditioner of some sort), the best you can hope for is to have the inside of the van equalize at the same temperature as the outside.

So what happens when the sun goes down? As the outside temperature drops, the heat flow in the van will reverse: now, heat will begin to flow from inside the van where it is hotter to the outside where it is cooler. In the uninsulated van, this happens through the windows and the thin walls of the van body. But in the insulated van, there is now a layer of insulation between the warmer interior and the cooler exterior—which does what insulation is supposed to do, by slowing down the heat transfer. (In reality, of course, there are always gaps in the insulation, such as the windows, which modify this process.) This means that the insulated van will cool off more slowly and stay warmer inside for longer than the uninsulated van will. Better roll down those windows to increase the airflow and equalize the temperatures.

But as we have seen, in reality the inside of the van will be heated to a higher temperature than that outside, from radiant heat transmitted through the metal skin of the vehicle. To combat this, there is a second type of insulation, known as “reflective” or “radiant”—such as Reflectix. This type of insulation does not delay the transfer of heat energy at all—it works instead by reflecting radiant heat energy back towards its source and away from the inside of the van. It therefore prevents the sun from raising the temperature inside the van above the temperature outside. In terms of temperature control, it is the thermal equivalent of parking your vehicle in the shade where the sun can’t heat it up. But—and this is important to understand—radiant insulation does nothing whatever to slow or prevent the ordinary flow of heat from the air outside the van to the air inside the van. So even with a layer of Reflectix, the temperature inside will still stabilize, sooner or later, at the same temperature as outside.

So where does that leave us? In the wintertime, insulation plays an important role by slowing down the transfer of heat energy from the inside of the van to the outside, whether that energy comes from your own body heat or from some type of camping heater. This means that foam wall insulation is good at keeping heat in the van when it is cold outside. (It also means that while the insulation can slow the rate of heat loss to the outside, it cannot stop it: the van interior will inevitably cool down if the source of heat is removed, until it matches the outside temperature—so insulation accomplishes nothing at all unless there is a source of heat inside the van, even if that heat source is you).

In the summertime, though, the situation is different. Now, the foam wall insulation has to try to halt the flow of heat from the hot outside to the cool inside, but, unlike in winter, it is not merely slowing the flow of a relatively small amount of heat energy inside the van (produced by a heater)—it is trying to halt the heat energy from the entire planet’s atmosphere. It is an impossible task. That is why insulation is very poor at keeping heat out of the van when it is hot outside. The insulation can temporarily delay the process, but cannot stop it: the outside heat energy will always get in, and the hotter it is outside the faster it will get inside. Reflective insulation can at least help here, by stopping the sun from heating the van interior through the metal skin—but although this prevents the van interior from being heated above the outside air temperature, it can do nothing to halt the inevitable equalizing of temperature between inside and outside. When you go back to the van at the end of the afternoon, it will be just as hot inside as outside, no matter how much insulation you have. And unless you have an AC to actually cool the air, that is the very best you can do.

So there it is. The iron laws of thermodynamics mean that while insulation does a quite good job at helping to keep a van warmer in the cold, it cannot do a very good job at helping to keep a van cooler in the heat. If you will be spending winters where it is very cold, you may find an insulated van useful. But if you will be spending your time where it is very hot, it will not be very helpful for you.

Engel Refrigerator: a game changer.... vandwellers

Just got my 40QT engel that I bought direct (for 600ish)... and it is a total game changer for van life! being a cook the fridge was one I was willing to save for and it was worth every penny so far !!! it holds its temp for awhile even when not plugged in. i would say it is even better than the refrigerators i have had in houses

Questions About Solar Powering Van vandwellers

Hey guys! First post here. I'm starting to more seriously look into getting a van and doing a conversion. My biggest uncertainty right now is power. I'd like to be able to atleast power some lights, chargers, and a small refrigerator. I'd also like to be able to power a single burner electric stove if this would be possible, as I know that takes a lot of juice. Obviously I'm looking towards solar power, but I really don't understand it. My main question is, what kind of setup do I need? What sized solar panel and what wattage? A lot of people seem to do well with the Goal Zero Yeti 1400, are there cheaper battery options that are as efficient? It's very expensive... I'd also like to know what gear you guys are using, and what you're powering with it. Thank you!

Looking for some input on refrigeration vandwellers

So what I'm trying to accomplish is having a 'mostly' if not completely solar powered refrigerator/freezer set up.

Since I intend on running this 24/7...365... I did plan on having a small gas generator to fill in the gaps when I need the extra juice.

What I have been considering at the moment was the 106Liter Dometic 12v/110v fridge/freezer...But likely only use the 12v input for the most part and just use the generator to keep the battery back at 100%

So some things I could use some feed back are....

  • Are these types of fridges, refrigerator AND freezer or.... refrigerator OR freezer? As in is the differentiation in the settings where I'm either freezing everything inside or can I have one portion frozen and one side refrigerated? If not are there other types that could accomplish that? Trying to avoid having to space out 2 separate pieces of equipment.

  • Is it practical to have a 100% solar set up for a non stop refrigerator? Or is it likely that I'll still be using that generator to charge up my bank on a weekly basis or something around that?

tl'dr look for advice on setting up an off-grid refrigerator/freezer set up.

Looking for travel cooler vandwellers

I planned on using a yeti cooler for holding my perishable goods while on the road, but I accidentally made my bed platform to short and the yeti is 1 inch taller than the space I have available. Does anyone know of a shorter alternative? Decent soft cooler, propane refrigerator, etc?

Propane powered refrigerator and tankless water heater vandwellers

It seems like I don't see enough people taking advantage of propane powered things. There are $300 propane powered mini fridges that seem like they'd work great and really save me some solar power for other things. Anyone use these? I plan on putting a 25g propane tank on hitch mounted storage.

So I figured if I'm already going to have plenty of propane, what else can I power? I found a $60 portable tankless rv water heater on ebay, and I know nothing about them. Can I run a pump from a 7 gallon water jug and get sufficient pressure to run a shower?
