Hey all,
My Yorkshire Terrier is about two years old. We put a gate up in front of our kitchen entrance to keep him while we're at work.
He does a pretty good job about holding his urine in until we get home. And if he can't, he's generally pretty good about peeing on a pad that we lay out for him (if he misses the mark, it's at least right next to it).
However, after we get home, he will pee multiple times in the kitchen and not on the pad. It's usually in front of the refrigerator, or really any other number of spots, but always in the kitchen.
I should note he has not been crate trained and I'm hesitant to go that route. Again, he's at least gives holding it in/going where he's supposed to while he's left home alone during the day the good ol' college try. Also, he never poops inside (unless it's on the aforementioned pad).
It's frustrating because he knows better and it's only an issue after my wife and I get home from work.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi, I have a hound mix named Cooper. He is very unwell behaved to the point of the dog actually outsmarting us at times but proving that he is untrainable even. My family started at the dog maybe having mental retardation as a joke then moved onto to all of looking up if it's possible or not within dogs because it got so prominent in our lives. He does things that would make you believe this. Some examples are actually preferring to use the bathroom in the house almost. Or how he will only try to lick your mouth, which is gross to only some people, understandably, but we always see him licking his genitalia. Or things just go to the window and watch outside. I've had a couple of glass pipes break because he jumps onto the dresser next to my bed. It turned into us believing something was wrong. But this turned to believing that we saw the dog as a genius dog, with the ability to reason. He turned to ruining something in our house every single day. And not multiple things just one. It's been months now. This turned to kenneling, but he would rip apart his bed would for him. Then we when couldn't include anything in the kennel and he broke the metal change. So we put the a new kennel in a narrow hallway just the size of the length of the kennel, which turned out being smashed so many times, with just enough force each time so it doesn't tip over, like driving a car, that to inches out of the hallway, and he can break it once again. It's turned into a serious problem by now. But he turned to reasoning when he is now opening doors. And it got weird once the doors are now turning closed so he doesn't get caught. Instead of opening the fridge, he opens the freezer, on a vertical refrigerator. He plays mine games on us, like stealing out food by staring off into the distance until we look to where his and he snipes a piece of pizza once we look away. He's honestly incredible, but awful at the same time. He's actually smarter than us. Do you have any advice? Please? Our house has been destroyed and he actually harms himself at times, like eating a cd case, or trying to jump through a window because he saw an animal, while breaking the glass on his face. Or other people because, well, he attacks anyone who comes over, ask my friend Joe, his arm has a footlong slash. He's very efficient and we know he loves us, though, making it worth keeping him. He loves cuddling and has never bitten any of us. It's odd how much he loves us at times. He feels sorrow by doing things like crawling to a corner, every single day when we watch in, or understanding when we are talking about him. Even in a neutral way, he knows. I love Cooper, but I really don't understand what to do. Thanks for reading this if you did.
Basically, the thread title says it all. Are we still safe to use these treats? They say to keep refrigerated and use within 14 days, but I'm not sure if that's just for freshness or freshness AND safety? So far they were out for at least 24 hrs.
Sorry if this post is long but I feel like I need to include a lot of info...Yesterday night we had a very scary experience with our 5 month old Border Collie puppy. It was around 9:30 at night and he was laying on the floor by the refrigerator and I went to pet him on his back/hind legs and he snapped. He lunged at me and bit me on the side of my chest. He showed no warning signs. After this incident he did not let me or my fiance near him without snarling, baring his teeth and lunging at us or trying to bite us for about an hour. It was like he was terrified of us for absolutely no reason. We were able to calm him down by sitting on the floor with him and gently petting him and not letting him bite is and basically just holding him. We don't know if he was hurt, or scared of the thunder since we had a lot of thunderstorms yesterday or if he was exhausted since we had a long day. Earlier in the day we took him to the dog park, and then my fiance took him for a run a few hours later. He then he came to my parents house for a few hours and then a stopped by a friends house for a bit. The whole time he did not show any signs of aggressive behavior. He is familiar with my parents house and all of the people there so its not like he was uncomfortable or anything. My 2 year old niece was playing with him (supervised) and he was sooo good with her. It was like a we flipped a switch out of nowhere and we cant figure out what happened. The only thing we could think of was that he was scared of the thunder and freaked out or he hurt himself/ he is teething and in pain. Is this possible? This morning he was fine, playful and cuddly as anything.

So about a year ago my boyfriend and I took over care of my brother in laws four year old rescue dog. My brother in law frequently bounced from house to house and often didn't give the best care to the dog. After some discussion my bf and I agreed to adopt him to save him from going to a shelter. He's one of the sweetest dogs I've ever met. He's a Jack Russel and dachshund mix. He's extremely cuddly and sweet and listens well...when we're home. When no one is home it's a completely different story. The dog is only left alone for about 4 hours a day because my bf and I work different schedules; but he causes a ton of destruction in those few hours. He gets into the trash and drags everything out and hides it under our bed. He's climbs onto my kitchen table and urinates, He urinates on walls, my couch, my bookcases. anything he can get to. He ripped the bottom piece of my refrigerator off, ripped the bottom of my dishwasher off and hid it under my bed. He opens my lower dresser drawers pulls out all of the clothes in them and urinates on them. He climbs into by bathtub and steals shampoo bottles, soaps, and my tub stopper and hides them under the bed as well. I have spent hours cleaning up after him. Even when I close all of the doors in my home I have a very open floor plan and he always finds something to get in to. When I sleep I encounter the same problems with him. He's very agile and climbs on everything constantly finding new things to destroy. He's been neutered and through obedience school and none of that seems to be helping. I bought a very spacious crate to put him in complete with an orthopedic bed, and plenty of food and water for him. I put him in the kennel for the very short time I was gone hoping that would help but he urinated all over the kennel and the surrounding carpet. He ripped his bed to shreds and urinated all over his own food in the kennel. I also found a note from my neighbors when I returned home saying he was whining so loudly they could hear him. So clearly the kennel is not an option. I took him to the vet and they told me he had separation anxiety and prescribed him some dogie Xanax but that doesn't help him either. I love him I'm just at my wits end. Has anyone else had these types of problems with their dogs?If so how did you solve it. I need some piece of mind.
I've decided I want to see if there's anything I can do to help the relationship between myself and one of our two dogs. A bit of background:
My family are long-time dog owners; we've had them since before I was born and we're currently on the third "generation" so to speak of family dogs. We've always owned labrador retrievers, and one of our current two dogs is Opie, a 4 year old chocolate from a local breeder. He's not the problem. About two years or so ago we decided to adopt a second dog (not our first time having two at once, but our first time adopting), who we named Lucie, and she's some manner of German Shepherd mix.

Lucie is of indeterminate age, likely 3+, and is a rescue from Tennessee. She was brought north to an animal hospital where we adopted her around two years ago. She grew accustomed to our house quite quickly as far as I can recall, and never really had any problems with people. Several months after adopting her we realized she was pregnant, but it was too late to avoid puppies and so the animal hospital took care of her until and after she had them, after which she was spayed. We got her back not long after. She's generally in good health; there's a small scar on her front left leg we don't know how she acquired, and she has a cataract/detached retina causing her to be blind in her left eye. She isn't bothered by it at all, but we still give her glaucoma drops once or twice a day to help with the cloudiness. She's otherwise quite well, and she's very friendly, excitable, and affectionate with the family - except for me.
While Lucie is very loud when it comes to strangers (she barks at people she doesn't recognize, but she's never hostile otherwise), the only people she seems particularly disturbed by are young men. We think she might have been abused in her former home by a young male with medium-long hair, as those characteristics in particular really get her barking. While she exhibited some avoidant behavior prior to having her puppies, after we got her back from the hospital there was a marked increase in her avoidance of me (25y/o male). I say avoidant and not fearful because she never does anything to particularly suggest that she's afraid of me, but she has some characteristic behavior that keeps her from getting close to me. In particular:
She's only okay with petting if it comes on slowly. One hand is typically preferred. Two hands extended and she'll generally try to move away. Picking her up is an absolute no-no.
She 'gives up' her spots when I appear. If she's on the couch downstairs and I come down and into the room, she'll get up off of the couch and move to the floor even if I'm not moving to disturb her.
She always tries to face me. If I come up behind her at all she'll rotate to make sure she's facing me. This includes changing positions on the couch to keep her eye on me.
She avoids my room. She'll go into my sister's room, my parents' room, sleep on their bed, etc, but she won't come into my room. Sometimes if she's curious she'll stop at the door frame and look in. If I have food she may come inside, but it's very hesitant and if I stand up or move closer to her at all she will flee the room.
She's more comfortable with me when I'm below her. If I'm standing over her she's most avoidant. She'll be more willing if I'm on my knees. If I actually want her to approach me I need to be laying down, then she may actually get close and sniff/lick me.
She's more comfortable with me when other family members are around. As long as someone else is present she'll generally let me get closer, use both hands, put my face against her, etc.
Despite all these characteristics it doesn't seem that she's "unappreciative" of my presence, for lack of a better word. If I'm downstairs alone at night and open up the refrigerator she'll come down and look to mooch. If I've been gone out of the house a long time she'll approach and sniff me. If I've been gone particularly long she may even jump a bit as though she were excited. If a family member is present with me she may join me on the couch, even let her head rest on me in rare circumstances.
She has none of these issues with any of my other family members, my sister, mother, or father. They can all pick her up, pet her, she'll willingly get close to them and snuggle up on them, join them in their rooms, etc. I've never purposefully done anything that I can recall that should make her avoidant of me personally; I tend to be as gentle with my approaches to her as I can. I've tried doing things like setting down food close to myself and seeing if she'll approach, amateur dog stuff to try and get her more comfortable, but it hasn't really had any effect.
I'm only just now making this post because it's never really been an issue other than it prevents me from getting to close to her. But if there's a way, I would like to get her more comfortable with me, to have her treat me like she treats the other members of my family, and so any advice in this regard is super helpful.
I've excluded the details of our other dog, Opie, since this post is already long enough, but in a nutshell he has no issues with Lucie or our family. The only way I could think of him being useful is as some kind of role model for being affectionate toward me, but obviously the fact that he and I are perfectly fine hasn't influenced her.
I'm super grateful for any ideas or responses on steps I can take to get Lucie more comfortable with me.
For training sessions we use hot dogs, cheese, chicken breast and food roll treats (Red Barn, Natural Balance), but we still need some shelf-safe (no refrigerator) treats for times we need to grab and go. We've used multiple flavors of Train-Me and Zuke's but puppy has not been motivated by these lately. I prefer soft (not crunchy) treats. I'm also wondering about cat treats, but I've heard not all cat treats are safe for dogs. Any suggestions? Amazon links preferred!

I'm trying to understand the relationship between our 3 year old dachshund and the 7 month old lab mix we just added to the family in December.
I worry about the two because Penny, the lab mix, is a puppy and I don't think she's always respectful/aware of bad manners and Buddy's (dachshund) warning signals.
She attempted to take a chew bone from him and even with him growling and showing his teeth she still took it, causing a scuffle where he got scratched. Now I limit chews to crate time for them, which is frustrating because Penny wants to chew often and isn't a fan of her crate.
Recently Buddy had something Penny was interested in and when she approached, he growled, she ignored it and Buddy rolled over on his back in submission because it wasn't worth the fight, I guess. I had been thinking of him as the aggressor since he's the one growling/showing teeth/etc but now I'm realizing he's giving "back off" signals which she's ignoring -- so he's not really at fault here.
A couple of days ago my son took something out of the refrigerator and Penny was excited and bouncing around (maybe stepped on Buddy?) and despite being right there I'm not exactly sure who started what but the two of them got into a snappy fight and either Buddy rolled over on his back to be submissive or she pinned him there... but either way she drew blood on his neck. :(
Penny doesn't SEEM to be aggressive/vicious -- she is always loose/ tail wagging/ goofball which gives me the impression that this is poor puppy manners and a lack of respect for Buddy that is escalating things. That said, she's still much bigger than him and clearly capable of serious harm if she wanted to cause it.
Today the two were playing in the backyard. I watched him chase her around the yard, pause and then let her chase him, etc. Then they started playing tug with a toy, and both seemed to be enjoying it and I took some video. As you can see in the short video, at the end Penny 'won' the toy... and then when they initiated play again I'm watching Buddy's body language and his tail is straight out -- a sign of aggression? Then the two of them began fighting about it right as my phone ran out of room and cut off, though nothing really happened after that, their "fight" just ended, no one was hurt.
Anyway, I feel so involved in this that I'd like some outside perspective. When you watch the video does it look like they're both happily playing? The two of them will curl up and nap together and seem to get along, until he's had enough and she doesn't listen to his warnings and then they'll fight, and she's gonna win because she's so much bigger. Are they still just working things out on where they stand in the pack or are these signs this pairing isn't going to work?

I adopted a cowardly street mongrel from a shelter 2 days ago, he seems healthy and sound other than the fact that he's afraid of everything ever: the passing cars outside, the wind, and me.
Even if I sit a distance away where he can see me, he's never actually approached me himself before, so I have no idea how to begin any sort of training whatsoever.
I understand it will take time for him to adapt, but he seemed to have found a tight cozy spot which is behind our refrigerator, which is also hard to reach for us, and every time he ends up there I'm unable to lure him out.
Food and treats only work within close proximity to him (like under 2 feet). If I offer it to him on my hand or leave it on the floor, he comes out, takes it, brings it back in, and then only chews on it, and in very slow and cautious movements.
I once tried leaving a food trail on the floor all the way to his food bowl but he got frightened by a noise while following it halfway and he went back into his corner.
So my question is, should I continue to let him have his peace and quiet there or should I block it off and let him learn to use his crate as his hideout? Or should I move my furniture around and move his crate over to the spot instead?
6 month old female toy poodle.
She's afraid of certain parts of our kitchen. If she walks near it without thinking about it, and then realizes where she is, she freezes in place, and then won't leave that spot. She's not fully house trained yet so she doesn't have free reign of the house yet, so I just heard her crying downstairs and came down and she was in that spot again, crying and afraid to move. So I moved her and then she acted like nothing had just happened and wanted to play.
We can't figure out if it's the refrigerator, the oven, or the dishwasher. When she gets stuck, often she's looking directly at the fridge, though the other day when she was stuck and I was trying to coax her out, she kept looking back at the oven. Though every once and a while we'll see her peek around the corner of the counter at the dishwasher, so we really don't know.
She's also afraid of one of the boards we have up as her boundry. She won't even take food that's on the floor in the areas she's afraid of. What do we do? How do we train out this behavior? Or how do we help her?
My dog has been known to try to get to food on the counter (she's eaten pizza and butter recently) so we've been being extra cautious about putting stuff away ASAP and not leaving anything harmful or really bad for her out on the counter anymore.
But this morning, I was making my boyfriend a ham sandwich for lunch and the dog was just hanging out with me like she usually does. I turned to the refrigerator for a second and when I turned back she had eaten the ham right off the sandwich. She had food in her dish at the time of the incident too.
I've read some things online about tips to help prevent this but I wanted to ask here too what has been the most successful for you? She already knows the drop it command and "wait" before eating food/treats. But I can't use those when she does it when I have my back turned.

I have a 9 year old female Westie (Lily). She's a barker, will go after the television if an animal or hairy man is on the screen. In the last year or so she developed an issue with incontinence - having accidents in the house almost daily. I took her to the vet, there's no infection, nothing wrong that they can see. She was on proin, but it didn't really cut it, and then she was on DES, which worked much better, but then that became unavailable for some reason, so she's back on proin. Her accidents are sporadic and rarer but definitely not gone.
My fiance, who I've been living with for about six months, has two dogs. One is an 8 year old chocolate lab (Hershey) who was abused and neglected as a puppy before she was adopted by my fiance's family. The other is a (we think) cocker-retriever mix (Moe) who will be 12 in December.
Hershey is incredibly food insecure. As a younger dog, she chewed through the kitchen cabinets to try to get at the food. Currently, she will open the side-by-side refrigerator and tear through anything she can get her mouth on. She pulls dishes out of the sink or off the stove, and will happy snatch your food if you leave it unattended. According to FH, Moe exhibited none of this behavior before Hershey was in the picture, but he is an active participant now, and will do all of those things, in addition to getting into any trash container he can find to eat tissues, q-tips, etc.
My dog's manners have gotten worse, but she's only 15 pounds so the damage she can do on her own is pretty limited.
And now in addition to all of this, Hershey's seasonal allergies are in full effect and her hair is falling out like crazy (she is improving now after a trip to the vet, but we didn't get her there early enough) and Moe has started having seizures, which are well-controlled with medication, but are still worrisome. And he sheds like a maniac.
I have started looking at these dogs in terms of their life spans. I cannot tolerate the misbehavior and it is impossible to keep the house clean when they're dragging garbage and food all over the place and peeing all over... A few days ago we came home to find Moe and Lily covered in cooking oil, as one of the dogs had pulled a frying pan partially off the stove, effectively tipping it over slightly. Thankfully it had cooled enough that they weren't injured but the kitchen was covered in oil, as were the dogs and our furniture!
The solution thus far has been to take any food that the dogs are interested in and put it on top of the refrigerator or in the pantry with a doorknob, and to tie the refrigerator door shut. It isn't ideal but it solves a good portion of the problem. The problem is that we're human, and we forget. Or I think that a bag of apples on the kitchen counter will be safe. But it isn't! The open-concept floor plan has become the bane of my existence.
I don't know what to do.
We're currently renting a ~2,000 sq foot townhouse with three levels and a small fenced back yard. We have one cat and one dog in our lease, and know that the previous tenant also had a dog. It might also be relevant that the vast majority of the people in the same HOA/ surrounding townhomes next to us and behind us have at least one dog, and the area is very pet friendly. Moving back to an apartment in the future isn't a concern. We plan to continue renting townhomes or houses until we buy a house.
I'll need to go through the property manager with this request. My other question is whether I could offer to replace the 30+ year old refrigerator in lieu of an additional pet deposit. While this would be more expensive than a regular pet deposit, the landlord had made vague promises to replace it when he can afford to. He lives out of state and owns multiple properties. Also, I'm just sick of the top of the refrigerator icing and then dripping onto everything in the fridge.
The dog we're interested in is a 7 month old male neutered beagle from a breed specific rescue, who sounds like he would be very compatible with my male 9 month old beagle mix. We'd plan on enrolling him in obedience classes and also taking our current dog there for a refresher (no fee since he's already taken the class).
Our dog always gets 2.5-3 hours of walks per day (one in AM, one in PM), additional trips to the park every few days, group hikes at state parks with other dogs and their owners weekly, and frequent several hour walks through nature trails on the weekends. I'm a fulltime grad student (for the next year/year and a half) who doesn't work, and all my classes are in the evening. I'm home during the day and with my boyfriend's work schedule, the dogs wouldn't be crated more than a few hours at a time.
We have been struggling with Rigby's weight for the past year or so. She's a 5 year old pit mix who is about 65lbs right now.
She's not a huge fan of playing - she'd rather sniff and eat grass than run after a ball 95% of the time, even with rewards. We try to encourage her to play around the house and in the backyard, but she just stares at us like, "Huh? What am I supposed to do?" I did train her fetch and recall, so she knows how to do it...she just doesn't. She'll tug for days, but she always ends up laying down but still holding it tight in her jaws, even when we encourage her to play. Walks are successful half the time...the other half they turn into a fight, where she plants her butt and won't move (even with a treat incentive). There seems to be no rhyme or reason to why she'll walk one time and not the next.
The weight gain primarily came from her ravenous eating while on prednisone as we were struggling with serious skin issues that resulted in staph infection flare ups 5-6 times a year. She would constantly test our food storage and hiding abilities...and finally figured out how to open the refrigerator. She even managed to eat the cat food that sits in a high rimmed bowl on top of a high dresser...without knocking it over...we still have no clue how she managed that. Then there was the leftover pizza on the back of the stove...when her nose barely even reaches the front burners if she's on her hind legs. When she isn't on the prednisone she's fine, but those were some tough times. She's on Apoquel now which has finally controlled her skin problems so she's hopefully not going back on prednisone anytime soon.
To make matters worse, after one of her worse skin flare ups we were giving her baths 3-4 times a week with Rx shampoo....and she slipped in the bathtub. After that she began favoring one of her rear legs and a visit to the vet and an x-ray confirmed that she likely tore her CCL. We are in the process of saving up money to get that fixed (hopefully next month or so), but the vet wants her to lose weight before that.
She eats 2 cups (actual cups, not a plastic non-measuring cup) of Kirkland Signature Salmon and Sweet Potato currently, though I just double checked the guidelines and it recommends for 40-60 lb dogs (50-55 lbs is her ideal weight according to vet) 3-4 cups per day. She's getting MUCH less than that. Every time we talk to the vet about her lack of weight loss, he just says feed her less and give her green beans to fill her belly, but I'm beginning to worry that she is starving, literally.
So now we are in a vicious cycle. She can't exercise because her leg, her leg is bad because she's overweight, she's overweight because she can't/won't exercise. And she doesn't eat enough to seemingly justify the lack of weight loss.
These days she sleeps nearly all day, even though I am home all day and try to entice her to play multiple times a day. I've gotten new toys for her, used a Kong Wobbler to feed her to get her mind going, but she doesn't even respond to her old favorite toys. She barely gets up for anyone...the only time she really gets off her bed or the floor is when someone is eating. She's even stopped getting up when my SO comes home from work in the afternoons to greet him, which used to send her into fits of happiness.
So long story short, I'm starting to get really worried. Her quality of life seems awful, sleeping 24 hours a day, lethargic, refusing to play... I'm worried that if we go ahead with the surgery to repair her leg before getting some weight off of her that she'll just re-injure herself. We've worked with the vet along the way, and he's even tested her for thyroid disease (negative). He just recommends the continued light to no exercise and reduced feeding, but there have been no results. Last time she was weighed (about 3 weeks ago) she had actually GAINED 5 (!!!) lbs.
Any advice or tips at this point is highly welcomed. It feels so sad to see her like this...it seems like sparkle and life has almost left her eyes and she is just completely depressed. She doesn't even get up for her favorite visitors anymore....
TL;DR - Lazy dog, torn CCL and recommended no/low exercise by vet until surgery, prednisone induced ravenous hunger led to weight gain, eating less than food packaging recommends, still not losing the weight. What can we do?

Here's the ball after a newfie mix, a labradoodle, three cats and a pig had some fun with it.
How I came to buy it: The dogs destroyed Zelda's treat ball, which was her favourite toy. It was in pieces. (Zelda's the grey kitty). I needed to find something light enough she could play with it, and strong enough the dogs wouldn't destroy it. Zelda loves it. It's just barely light enough for her to pick up. The dogs got a hold of it, and that's how the rubber prices came off, since they gnaw. The pig then stole it, and that's where it got the scratches, because she just chomps.
Deciding factor on buying it: different difficulties plus capacity. It can hold 1.5 cups of dog food, and it has i think 3-4 levels of difficulty. Plus it looked like it would be able to hold up to my animals.
Would I buy it again: yes. It definitely holds up, and it's everybody's favourite toy. I can't believe the pig didnt manage to destroy it. Charlotte has destroyed a lot of things, and this is the first treat toy/cabinet/refrigerator/food dispenser she hasn't broken.
Hello all, first post in this sub. So I have a chihuahua and a Great Pyrenees/Maremma Sheepdog mix. My wife and I recently purchased a new house. In our old house, we had issues with the dogs both marking on the lowest stair and our couches/refrigerator. Once we moved in to our new house, we decided to get belly bands for them in order to prevent them from marking.
We have now lived in our new house for a little over a month, and just about 2 hours ago, my great pyrenees marked on a couch. 2 days ago we started letting them go without the belly bands when they were under supervision. I took my eyes off the great pyrenees for about 2 min while I fixed a snack for myself and he marked on my couch. We have had both couches cleaned thoroughly and the one he marked on was on a spot that was not available for him to mark on in our old house because it was against a wall.
I am so frustrated at this point, I dont know what to do. I have concerns that he may still have an un-descended testicle because he continually gets swollen gonads, but our vet has checked him and has not been able to find anything. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do?
