Assistance for my new cat, who seems to have made it his mission to destroy my apartment. Pets

I got a new cat, Drogon, back in August as a companion for my first cat, Sevi. They actually started getting along very well after only a few days to a week, and it's mellowed Sevi out considerably since she'd get so stir crazy while I'm at work.

While Sevi was never the destructive type, she did have her moments. This was remedied with toys, scratching posts, ect. At this point, her only real problem is her tendency to eat like a golden retriever on steroids, but that's a different issue.

Now, with Drogon, I've been running into numerous issues with him. He is an extremely sweet boy who only ever wants to play and be near you. But despite having two scratching posts, way too many different types of toys, and a bedtime routine that definitely tires him out by 9pm or so, he still has some things I'm a little stuck on.

  • Climbing. I think this is where I could do a bit better, but I'm uncertain as of what to do. I got Sevi as a kitten, and she was never the type to climb beyond something as high as a toilet seat. So it never crossed my mind to get her any expensive climbing trees (nor did my old place have the space for it). Drogon, on the other hand, is Spidercat. I'll come home to find little pawprints on my kitchen counters, stuff on my bathroom counter askew, ect. He knocked over a picture frame I had sitting on the shelf above the fireplace - which is high up enough that I have no idea how he even gets to it because he never jumps up there while I'm home. He's also managed to get to the top of the refrigerator. I've nearly broken my neck trying to figure out how he does that little number. Would maybe a tall cat tree be enough for him, or something else? I would love to have plants on that fireplace shelf one day, but I don't want him to climb up and try to chew on them or knock them over.

  • Scratching at things he shouldn't. As I mentioned above, they have two scratching posts - one tall, thick one and a smaller one that's dome shaped and has a crawl space underneath. They've mostly been good about using them, but Drogon likes to use the side of the couch instead. I've tried redirecting him with various things, but he isn't particularly treat-responsive, and he's terrified of catnip (I don't know).

The issue I'm most worried about, though, is his bad habit of tearing at the floor under my carpet until I open the door. All doors MUST be opened according to him, and he's already scraped that corner of the door down to the wood. I have it covered with a carpet right now until I can find a way to patch it.

What I've tried so far:

  • Keeping the doors open. Works for protecting my carpet, but not so much for sleep. If I shut them out of the room so I can sleep and just let them have the rest of the apartment to play in the wee hours in the morning, I'm soon woken up at 5am to the sound of my carpet being torn to shreds. If I let them sleep with me, I'm woken up by them both physically waking me to feed them. Sevi isn't as bad about it because I've mostly broken her of this through a year long battle of willpower (she gives up after a bit), but Drogon is relentless. I think I get about 5 hours or so a night. Maybe less.

  • Putting rugs/foil/tape down. Doesn't work. He just kind of pulls up the rugs or foil or tape and goes right back to his digging.

  • Cat repellent spray/other sprays. Doesn't seem to faze him at all. Apple cider vinegar worked for a day or two, but I guess he decided he liked it.

  • Even MORE play before bed: Both of them effectively go to bed whenever I do, but being crepuscular, they're always up at the ass crack of dawn ready to go whether I like it or not.

  • Compressed air. It's the only thing that'll stop him for at least an hour, but even that's starting to lose its 'kick'. I just crack open the door and give a loud puff of compressed air (not AT him, just where he'll hear it) and he runs off. Now, the little shit actually listens for the sound of me trying to quietly sneak out of bed and will stop digging as soon as my feet touch the floor.

He's not a bad guy - I just want him to stop jumping on everything and destroying my carpet. Do you guys have any ideas for this?

Anyone know who to report this to? Should I just take pictures and mail them? How do I do it anonymously? Pets

My first time in this sub and I’m not sure if this is the place to ask this question but here’s hoping.

I work for a veterinarian supply warehouse who has a very small refrigerator. There’s not enough space to store all the cold product that we get during the week. Managements solution is to put the excess product on carts that are left out at room temperature (70F - 75F) for 8+ hours out of the day for 5 days a week until clean up time. We then put the carts back in the refrigerator. My concern is that a lot of the vaccines and other cold product have degraded and lost their potency to be effective in treating animals. Yet, the products are still being sold and shipped out to our customers. I feel guilty that maybe a few pets have died because some of the vaccines had gone bad but were still used by unsuspecting veterinarians and loving owners. This company can also afford to expand the refrigerator but I guess they are trying to be “cost effective.”

Cat eats EVERYTHING Pets

Mods feel free to take this down if needed- Hi, I have a 9? month old kitten named Vermin and he eats anything and everything. Along with people food, he's tried to eat tin foil, bottle caps, q tips, hair, strings, crumbs, plastic, leaves, refrigerators, wires, lights, paper, and an hour ago I was so scared he ate a pill that I knew that I needed to make him stop. He always has food since he's a tad underweight from being a stray and When he behaves I even give him treats but nothing stops him. I've tried every training technique I know and then some I found online. He refuses to listen. Will he just grow out of it, does he have something wrong, or is he just a giant asshole?

4 Month Old Male Kitten Peeing in Random Places Pets

Our male kitten keeps peeing in random places! We don't ever seem to catch him in the act, we just find it later. This morning my boyfriend found it on the couch when he was cleaning the covers and in the pile of plastic bags we keep between our stove and refrigerator. He still uses his litter box all the time and often pees in there as well.

We use enzyme pet smell remover spray on all of the spots but he never pees in the same spot twice to begin with. It's usally 1-2 times a week we find spots. Sometimes its a small amount and sometimes it a larger stain. Not sure how to stop this behavior! He is going to get neutered next month but we don't want a whole month to go by with him peeing unbeknownst to us and then finding it later. We do have 2 dogs but he gets along with them really well and the male dog is a beta male so I don't think it's a dominance thing?

I don't think it is a UTI, he is fed wet food that is all natural, but I am taking him for his third round of vaccinations on Monday and I will be sure to have them tet for it. Other than that I am at a loss of what to do. Help!

I tried to discipline my restless kitten and hit him. Now he's way more restless and started urinating in bed as bonus Pets

Let me say this first. I didn't enjoy hitting him and I felt terrible while doing it. Also I hit him so that he wouldn't be injured in any way, much like two spanks with my hand. I just assumed he would connect a habit to physical displeasure. How wrong I was indeed. This being said I will not ever hit him again.

So I am a 24 yo working single guy, living in a two bedroom apartment. So I adopted a male kitten of @8 weeks on 22 october, with the thought of not feeling lonely when coming from work, and at the same time providing a home for a cat. Needless to say the whole weekend and monday he meowd non stop. And I mean non stop until his voice kinda gave out. For the first 3 to 4 days I had like 8 hours of sleep total. Sometimes he would stop, while cuddling with me and purring or sleeping, but most of the time he was meowing. During this he was also urinating in the bed and I accommodated to this by putting his litter box, uncovered, right next to the bed so he would see and use it more easily. While stalking him and taking him to his litter box right about when trying to urinate I successfully thought him to use the litter and I was very happy. Also he had this nasty habbit of climbing my feet while standing and I thought him not to do it by tucking him over his head repeatedly till he lets go. (which he didn't seem to mind and hate me for it) So... I assumed he cried for his mum and it will pass. And in fact during the following two weeks he did appear not to meow for his mum anymore.

Ever since my first day at work (in which he probably felt abandoned and probably meowd like there's no tomorrow and thats why lost his voice) he became VERY clingy and nosy. Whenever it was that I did anything that didn't involve him he would meow nonstop and super loud all the while trying to distract me any way he could. I do love him but I don't want to stay on a chair with my kitten in my lap all day. And even if I stayed with him on my lap for a few hours and cuddle him nonstop he would consistantly have these random meows which made no sense. He was well fed, he has no medical problems, he knows to use the litter and he’s cuddling but he still meows every 30 seconds? Almost a completely consistent meow every 30 seconds. And as two weeks went by with me trying to ignore him sometimes and wean him off, there were no showing signs of him being less clingy. This, coupled with his random meowing were beginning to piss me off. I also heard kittens are supposed to sleep a lot, and he probably would, if I held him all the time. Anywhere else no. This appeared to be the case when I was active, when I was sleeping he became very quiet.

So this sunday I tried to wean his random meowing out by tucking him over the back of the head and saying “shush” whenever he would do so in the hopes of him associating “shush” to me disliking his meows. Then he began pissing me off even further due to him still having random meows but preparing hismself for a tucking after doing it. WTF??

Ok so then I left him alone and I started to build a PC which was a nightmare as you can probably figure out. He was all over the parts and me and I gradually began pushing him away more firmly. I did manage to finish the job after 9-10 solid hours. So after I finished setting up my desktop needless to say he was going lots of times to the cables in the back and it was extremely difficult for me to take him away from there every time, so what I did was slap him firmly when he was there (and this happened 2 or 3 times). But only after that I realised I could put something in a place so he couldn’t reach the cables. Too little too late. Ever since then he still follows me around but he’s concentrating ALL of his energy into playing almost ferally with anything. All the while not looking me in the eyes and not wanting to cuddle anymore (except for when he wants treats as he knows they are in the refrigerator). He also licks himself wherever I rub him and started to sometimes urinate in my beds again which saddened me greatly. (I read that he does this to impose his scent over mine. Does this mean he sees me as some sort of enemy or rival now?). Also instead of his random moews he now makes some little cry like a baby sobbing (which sounds and makes me so sad).

Now it’s Tuesday and I took the day off from work to mend my relationship with him, but even though he seems to become slightly affectionate to me again he still tries to urinate outside the litter box. I plan to lock him in the bathroom for 30 minutes whenever he tries urinating outside the litter box. At this point I don’t even know what to do anymore and just become friends again. I didn’t know cats become so hateful after they are hit and I also regret it so much.

Sorry for my long post.

I'm broke, can I make do with homemade cat food for a few days? Pets

I am temporarily skint and it will be another 4 days before I can buy more cat food. I have one 6 oz can left, which will last a day, and then my cat won't have anything left!

I do, however, have 1 lb of 95/5 ground beef thawing in the refrigerator. I've also got local eggs, white/brown rice, and some frozen (from fresh) green beans. Does anybody have tips for combining these, perhaps with some other food items I might have, to make a temporary homemade cat food?

The cat will go right back to her normal dry food with the occasional canned when I get paid next week.

I moved in with my boyfriend and his cat can't stand mine; our household is unbearable, what can we do? Pets

This is going to be a long read and I apologize for that but I feel I need to cover all the details to really get some help.

I've already posted about my cat before, here. Jazzpurr was my new cat while I still lived in my old apartment and Ginger was the resident. Ginger has since gone back to my parents' house and is much happier and relaxed now that she is back to being the only cat.

Well now I've moved in with my boyfriend who also a has a cat, Maude. Maude and Jazzpurr were both from the same foster home and had only been separated for about 3-4 months. They seemed to still recognize each other but Maude was a little pissed another cat was coming into her home. We kept Jazzpurr put up in the spare bedroom for a time (longer than a week) but eventually had to let him out because he was digging up actual chunks of carpet around the door trying to escape.

The cats seemed to be fine, Maude didn't prefer Jazzpurr to touch her or try to play with her but we could all sit on the couch together without issue. And then out of nowhere, maybe two weeks ago, Jazzpurr just began taking off chasing Maude across the house. She throws a spitting, howling fit and eventually chose the kitchen cabinets as her refuge. I read that sometimes the cats just have to chase it out and establish dominance. Jazzpurr wasn't trying to hurt Maude so we ignored it. Then came the day they knocked over a glass and broke it, stupidly causing an argument between me and my boyfriend. And then came the day Maude peed off the refrigerator onto the kitchen counters and pooped on top of the kitchen cabinets.

At that point we began separating them at night because it always seems to be when we are in bed that Jazzpurr tries to chase Maude. Or at least at night. Two nights ago they broke a Mason jar when Jazzpurr launched onto the kitchen counter to get to Maude. So we tried bringing Maude into our room at night to sleep with us. Jazzpurr cried outside the door throughout the night and began digging again at the carpet at the door. I had to sleep in the spare room with him.

During the day when we are gone, we learned we couldn't have Jazzpurr be the one placed in the bedroom because he ripped up our carpet. So we now put Maude up but Jazzpurr digs at the carpet trying to get in to her...

Most nights we now try to keep Jazzpurr in the room with us but then Maude doesn't get any attention and sometimes Jazzpurr STILL digs at the carpet to be let out but we obviously can't let him. It is almost 2 a.m. where I am right now and I'm up typing this because tonight, we decided to put Maude in the bedroom to sleep with us. My boyfriend went to the bathroom and when he opened our bedroom door to come back in, Jazzpurr ran past him and went after Maude. We shooed Jazzpurr out but then he started crying and, of course, digging at the carpet to get in with us. So I just decided to leave our room and stay in the spare bedroom with Jazzpurr.

I have not had a single full night's sleep since moving in last month and I am so fucking on edge because of these cats. We have tried playing with Jazzpurr until he is literally falling over from being worn out (we constantly give him attention when we are home) and even distracting him with a laser when he would start to chase Maude. But he eventually started ignoring that. We've tried the pheromone sprays, spraying him with water, practically everything the internet says. But we can't keep allowing him to chase her until she gets "used to it" or whatever because then she traps herself on the kitchen cabinets and won't even come down for the litter box. Please guys, help me out because I start school full-time very soon and cannot be doing this every night. I miss sleeping with my boyfriend and I miss sleep, period.

TLDR: MY CAT IS A FUCKING ASSHOLE WHO WON'T BE CHILL AND STOP CHASING MY BOYFRIEND'S CAT.

EDIT: We've tried putting towels down around the door when we have to keep one shut but Jazzpurr just claws at it until he can move it and get to the carpet. what hteuckfuck.

How do I keep my cats from jumping on counters? Pets

My two 6 month old cats keep climbing on our kitchen counters/table/refrigerator and my roommate wants me to keep them shut in my room if I can't get them to stop... I've tried the double sided tape stuff and have seen one of the two jump and walk on it without it seeming to bother him at all. I really don't want to have to keep them shut in my room because it's not big enough or fair to them. Any advice would be amazing.
