Looking to re-locate to foothills. Have no idea where to start. LosAngeles

I was at the Back Door Bakery in Sunland-Tujunga the other morning and, after exploring briefly, realized I want to live out there. I need to get out of my studio lease in South LA and I want a small cottage, bungalow, that sort of thing. I appreciate the trees and shade and I was in the mountains hiking within minutes. Feeling pretty over 20+ years in the ghetto and want to return to my wilderness roots.

Anyhow, I am looking through craigslist and not having much luck.

The specific area I mention is not as important as proximity to the mountains there and I am open to areas nearby.

Thanks for any help!

Edit 1: I should have said in headline that I have no idea where to start... looking. I mean, are there postings somewhere other than craigslist that maybe a local might recommend, please?

Edit 2: Ok, I forgot I experienced this when I was looking last year but here's the first craigslist scam this time. Guy responded by email with same exact weird story about their "job as a missionary," increasing the advertised price by $150, and requesting I return this "application" sight unseen. Folks, if you ever see this, I have seen the exact same letter before and its a total scam. Here is the entire body of the email coming from Larry L ll5398418@gmail.com :::

Thanks for your interest and sorry for the late response.it was due to my wife illness but i thank GOD she is getting better. I must confess that I am very very new in this landlord business.. However, ,I own the property located at (2473 Altura Ave, Montrose, CA 91020) Due to my job as a missionary I spent less time in the States so I could not get a hold on any Realtor to handle this rent issue, although it was when I knew how long we are going to stay in ( Alaska USA) that I decided to rent out the property and i will be here for (3-4 years) How ever, the initial plan was to sale out the property which I tried, but some times the agents inflates the prize and it takes longer to sell i am telling you this in case if you find the property on another website, that is the old advert. because of this reason and more we need a responsible person (With good credit) that can take very good care of it as we are not after the money, but want it to be clean and for you to take of it as if it were yours The rent is $900 and $900 for Security Deposit...Utilities such as AirConditioner Dishwasher Walk-in Closet Refrigerator Vaulted Ceilings Washer/Dryer Cable etc are all included in the rent...

SO IF YOU ARE REALLY INTERESTED I WILL WANT YOU TO FILL THE RENT APPLICATION FORM BELOW. PLEASE TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF 1)Your Full Name______________________________ 2)Present Full Address:______________________________ 3)(CELL)Phone & (Home)Phone:______________________________ 4)Marital Status?___________________________________________ 5)How many people will be living in the house_________________________ 6)Do you have a pet______________________________ 7)Do you have a car______________________________ 8)Occupation______________________________ 9)When will you like to move in?_____________________________ 10)How long are you willing to stay in the property________________ 11)When are you ready to Move In?________________ 12)Name of pet: __________? 13)Kind of pet: _______? 14)Do you smoke ___________ ? 15)Do you drink ___________? 16)Do you work late night? 17)Monthly Income? 18)How Soon Do You Want To Receive The Keys And Document? 19)How soon can you make the deposit payment? 20)Picture of occupantIf available? 21)Driving license/identity card__If available? ==============================

Open Letter to the California about SB-649: You’re being Played by AT&T Et Al. LosAngeles

tl;dr - This is an industry sponsored bill that would allow AT&T, Verizon, and all the other telecoms to set up mini-cell towers on any public property without regulation by local municipalities. Basically, they can set up a refrigerator sized mini-cell node in front of your house and there's nothing you or your city can do to stop them. They're claiming this will allow them to set up 5G wireless networks. Also, don't forget that these things need to be set up about once every 10-20 houses, so it's not like they're gonna be sparse. Also don't forget that this is exactly what they did to gain access to utility poles for fiber optic lines 20 years ago, promising super fast and cheaper internet for everyone, and also competition. None of those things ever really panned out.

300 out of 400 California cities oppose it, but it seems like this bill will still pass the State Assembly and State Senate, so we're going to need Gov. Jerry Brown to veto this thing. I'm writing to him now asking him to do so.

EDIT - When I say "in front of your house", I mean the publicly owned sidewalk area in front of your home.

[Forgive Me, It’s Another Measure S Thread] Still much work to be done to stop Measure S LosAngeles

Hey r/losangeles so if you’re like me you’re very closely following the local election, specifically Measure S. I’ve long made up my mind that Measure S would be an absolute disaster for Los Angeles and that it must be stopped. I’ve posted on Facebook, commented on reddit, and most importantly, donated my time on weekends to the No on S campaign. I’ve learned a few things that I’d like to share with you.

The mayors’ office expects voter turnout to be 15%, while I heard it expected to be as low as 13%. With turnout that low and S polling dead even (40/40 was the number I heard. I’m sceptcal of the poll putting the No side up 14 points, low sample size and high margin of error should be taken with a gran of salt Post-Hillary), a few hundred votes could swing in either side’s favor.

If you’re also like me, it seems like everyone you know is voting against Measure S. Considering the relatively low voter turnout for 18-34 year olds, this is an aberration. Here is a post from Shane Phillips, who you might know as the author of the No on S articles for Better Institutions that have been circulating. It shows a few statistics on early voting and vote by mail:

Here's some disturbing data about low turnout among those in LA that are younger, renters, people of color, and/or liberal-leaning. Don't let apathy win the day—turn in your vote-by-mail ballot or commit to showing up at the polls on March 7th!

  • Seniors make up 20% of those registered to vote in LA County, but they've returned almost 50% of the ballots.

  • 48% of registered voters are white, but whites have returned 66% of the ballots.

  • 15% of registered Republicans with mail-in ballots have turned theirs in; less than 9% of Democrats and only 6.5% of independents have returned theirs.

  • Over 13% of homeowners have voted, while just 8% of renters have turned in their ballots.

This is why LA's leadership and policies don't reflect our priorities: because so few of us actually show up when these decisions are being made, and those that do are less diverse, older, wealthier, and more conservative. Make your mark on Los Angeles and VOTE!

UPDATE: Here is some even more up-to-date information on election returns in the City of LA (you can also check out other cities, county, etc.): http://ift.tt/2mKxciS

Lastly, I want to show you this post by the Yes on S:

http://ift.tt/2mVN4M7

What do you see here? Older and whiter (with the exception of the black woman, obvi). I had one guy over the phone literally say he doesn’t want development “in [his] backyard, ruining everybody’s views” and that he wants to “stick it to city hall.” He proudly used the phrases we’ve used pejoratively. These people exist whether they use #MeasureS on twitter or not. It doesn’t take a genius to know the sides aren’t just split between renters and home owners but between older and younger, baby boomer and millennial, the future and the past. These people vote in huge numbers and renters, people of color, and young people, do not.

But that’s what is expected to happen, not what has to happen. At work on Monday, make it your mission to talk to at least 3 people and convince them of the severity and gravity of Measure S and how they have to vote. There is at least 3 people in every office who voted in November who don’t know there’s an election, let alone something as big as this. Tell them they can take two hours paid off from work to vote, before or after their shift. Print this out and give it to them, tape it to the communal refrigerator if you have to. Take them to http://ift.tt/2fx7CrH right there on the top and find out their poling place. We need to reach those people. 3 people here, 3 people there, pretty soon we’ve all done our duty.

Don’t let us lose Los Angeles due to apathy, misinformation and disinterest! Vote! Encourage others to vote! Make your voice heard and together we can defeat Measure S.

Will more modern buildings be built in downtown following the Wilshire Grand Center? LosAngeles

The Wilshire Grand is a very modern and aesthetically pleasing building and it definitely gives a breath of life to the downtown LA skyline (and inspired this post), but it's still surrounded by older concrete giants. What I want to know is if there are any plans to build more modern-looking buildings anywhere in the next 10-20 years.

Need help picking between 2 living situations LosAngeles

Thanks in advance! TLDR: I need help picking between two rooms that include utilities and parking. I’d be making $16/hour and I’d work from 8am-5pm. 1st room: very small bedroom but in a really nice neighborhood in a house for $750 2nd room: very big bedroom but in an iffy part of town in a 2bedroom apartment for $850 I might not be able to fit all my stuff in the 1st room, but the 2nd room I can.

Hi Reddit I’d like a little help picking between 2 living situations, since I need a room asap. I’d be okay with either room, but I’d like Reddit’s opinion on the matter. Little bit about me: I have no kids/pets, single, don’t drink/smoke, and I’ll be making $2,569 to $3,597 a month. I’ll be making $16/hour and expect to work 6-7 days a week. I’d be working from 8am-5pm. I currently live in a 2bedroom apartment and live 2 hours away from LA county, which is where my new job will be. The first living situation is in a very nice part of LA. I’d be renting a very small room for $750. The room is like a room for a teenager. Crimemapping.com says that only 3 crimes have been reported in the last month. Here’s a representation of what the room would look like. http://ift.tt/1MQCUGr This room is in a really nice 2 story house. I believe there are 4 rooms 3 bathrooms. The older couple live there and I believe there's another tenant or could be another one in the future. The room already has a bed, dresser, very small tv, big closet, refrigerator, private bathroom, shared pool/kitchen/garage/laundry/parking. I'd have to let her know of my departure 30 days in advance if I wanted to move out before the 12m lease ended and there was no application fee. I can do month-to-month, but she can raise the rent right? I have various items I'd like in the room, but I don't think they'd fit or I'd have to rearrange the room. I've not gone over that, since I was only able to meet up once. I live 2hrs away. The owners have lived there for 30 years. Utilities are included except internet. I’m not sure if I can buy my own internet. I got the impression that I can’t share their internet connection. I have quite a bit of stuff that may not fit in the tiny room. Such as a big screen tv, desk and desktop computer, my bed, and a couple chairs.

The second living situation is in a okay/iffy part of town. There’s not a lot of “name brand” stores nearby. Crimemapping.com says that 59 crimes has occurred in the past month. There were 6 car break-ins on the street alone. The tenant has lived there for 3 years. She’s already had supposedly 7 people before me apply. She told me she wants to pick the right person since it took her 7 months to kick out her previous roommate for not paying rent. I think she just wants a female roommate. The apartment is a 2bedroom/shared bathroom/fridge/kitchen. It has shared parking, washer/dryer, in unit, This place prefers a 12month lease, but the landlord is lax about people breaking the lease(what she said). The application fee is $30. The room is twice as big as the other room. The room is as big as a small studio apartment. Here’s a representation of what the room would look like. http://ift.tt/2bBP7B9 I’d be able to do a workout in the room, whereas I might feel claustrophobic in the other room. The tenant seemed very straight forward. This place has no internet. Everything I’d want to bring would fit in this room. Such as a big screen tv, desk and desktop computer, my bed, and a couple chairs.

My needs: I need my desk/desktop computer/monitor and I’d highly prefer sleeping in my tempurpedic bed. My wants: I’d really want my big screen tv for watching movies and playing xbox and rock band.

Need some help with apartment security deposit LosAngeles

I rented an apartment from December of 2013 to January of 2015. On December 31st, I gave my 30 day notice and I moved out on January 31st. However I left my television and food in the refrigerator. These were removed on February 2 which is when I turned in my keys. Today, I received a letter regarding my security deposit of $1000. The letter states that "mailbox keys and keys to the building were returned on February 2 2015 in which time that the tv was removed along with the food in the fridge. Rent for the month of February $1070." I understand that I turned in the keys late, but is there anything I can do about getting charged for the entire month? If anyone has any tips, I would be grateful as money is tight and I need my deposit. Thank you.
