Hi all,
Quick story... Here in Maine (US), we had a pretty nasty windstorm the night of October 29th through the 30th which knocked out power to the majority of the state, including myself. I woke up the 30th without power. I just bought the house I'm in this year, which included a free-standing Generac generator that could automatically start when power is lost. However it didn't kick on that morning. I wasn't sure what was going on, since it is new to me, never really used it. I didn't have time to mess with it since I had to be at work early, so I left it be.
On my lunch break, I went home and called the electric technician suggested to me by the former owners of the house in this writeup they gave me regarding the various things about the house, these technicians have done yearly checkups of the generator. Due to the storm, the line to the business gave an automated message to call a different number and leave a message. I did so at 11:56AM according to my phone logs. In the message, I indicate who I am, that I am a new owner of a house that had used their services and to call me back.
After that, I decided to check out the generator myself. After a quick off-then-on flick of the switch on the generator, it powers on no problem. Great, and sadly obvious. According to my messages back and forth with my girlfriend, this was at 12:03PM. At that point, I checked to make sure what was supposed to work on the generator circuit actually worked (heat and refrigerator mostly) and went back to work.
My girlfriend had a three hour break during a split shift at 2PM for which she came home for... At around 2:39PM, I get this message from her: "Some random dude showed up...asked if the generator was working..i said yes and he left.....". I mention how weird that was and that I never received a call from anyone from that business that they were coming to the house. However, all well and good, it works, no issues.
So, fast forward to today, 2 weeks later. I receive an invoice from that company for $95.00 with a description that says "services to look at generator out in over speed, we got there and the unit was running" with the $95 line item for generator tech.
So, now my question. Am I responsible for this invoice although I had not requested anyone to come to my house? In my voicemail to the business, I simply asked for a call back... It seems like a very shady business practice to come unannounced, not do anything, and charge for it.
I attempted to call when I got home and received my mail, but it is after hours for them, and I'd rather not leave my voicemail regarding this situation. Is there anything that can better prepare me for this inevitable conversation I'm going to have with them? Any help would be appreciated!!
