32F 5'10" SW215 CW175 GW 150 Making my grocery list, organizing it into the order I will find the items on the shelves (by general section). I realize that by starting in the produce department I make sure I get all the "good stuff" before my cart is too full, or my budget is gone.
The me of 2 years ago always started in the liquor and beer section. Those things are heavy and need to be at the bottom of my cart. And who are we kidding here, an alcoholic always makes sure booze comes first. I would carry on up and down every aisle in the store getting things from my list and things that "inspired me" or looked good (plenty of canned items, and random ingredients for meals I'd rarely make, and oh look a scented candle!) By the time I got to the produce section I was tired of shopping, and often out of money. I'd choose an item or two and go.
Now we start in the produce department and if I spend half of my $120 budget there it's totally okay. I complete the exterior loop of the store before going down the aisles. No more wandering each aisle left to right. Stick to the list and get non perishables last.
The difference has been staggering! Not only am I now 17 months sober, but I am successfully maintaining a plant based, whole food diet. Having good stuff in the house is so great. Including fruit to snack on, kept in the front and center of the top refrigerator shelf. Not only do I feel like I'm nailing adulthood, but I can make delicious, healthy, Instagramable meals, and pack well for my work trips. There have been times when I have been out of money, and out of gas, a few days before payday, but because I prioritized produce I can still eat well. I've lost 40lbs doing this Husband has lost 50!
TL/DR: shop backwards. Start with produce end with non perishables. Do the exterior loop of the store before you go down the aisles.
