How original does a senior project need to be? EngineeringStudents

Hey all,

I am doing my senior project this semester for my degree in mechanical engineering technology and plan to pursue my masters in aerospace engineering afterwords.

My question is, how original is the project expected to be? My current idea is to do it on the vapor abortion refrigeration cycle, specifically, using waste heat from an automotive engine to run an ac unit. Now, this is not new science, the cycle having first been designed I'm the mid 1800s That being said, after some preliminary research, it doesn't look like anyone has gone to market with such a system though papers have been written on it.

I've already talked to the automotive department, and they say I can use the engines they have set up, so I was thinking of creating a functioning unit.
