My house rests on the large hill next to the town of Red Rock Texas, I had moved in a few months before because of my Mothers need to get out of northern Virginia. For a bit of backstory, I had lived in Virginia my whole life and so had my Mom. Once she hit 30 and convinced herself that she was 'over the hill' she decided to pack up everything we had ever known about life and move half a country away.
I didn't react the way you would expect, in fact for a fourteen year old I think I reacted pretty well. I didn't scream, I didn't fight back, I didn't even try to tell her no. You may be asking why, it's because I knew that she needed this. Like I mentioned earlier, she had spent her life here and she felt like she was missing out on the world. We had gone down for a trip in April, checked the place out and she went in for a few job interviews.
In July, we packed up and loaded all of our past into a U-HAUL truck, and took a long drive down, stopping only for food, gas, or sleep. Adjusting to my new home was hard, I didn't know what to do. Excitement had filled me but was closely chased by anger as well. Seeing as I had moved down mid summer I had no friends and had difficulty making them as well, I pretty much resigned myself to my room.
Like a horror movie cliché nothing happened when we first moved in. There was no movement in the house late at night, no dreams, nothing at all. We settled in and I tried my best not to miss Virginia. The first occurrence happened in early September, I woke up to a crash down the hall and as I moved into the hallway, wiping the sleep from my eyes I saw that every single dish in the kitchen had fallen and landed in a strategic pile on the floor. Not a thing was broken, just, there.
I know what you are going to think, a dream, and honestly that's what I thought too. My mom and I have made a habit of sharing any odd, weird or funny dreams we come across as a way to entertain ourselves. The next morning over coffee and toast I mentioned the dream to her. "Huh, it's going to sound off but I had the same dream." When we had been at our old house, we blamed all strange happenings on a fake ghost we had dubbed Wilfred. Mom made a quick joke that it looks like he followed us and then retired to her bedroom for something or another.
I had this dream for days and honestly it didn't scare me, it intrigued me. That is until one morning I walked into the kitchen and every dish was stacked, no dream, this was real. I moved myself towards my Moms room to congratulate her on giving me a good scare, she wasn't there. I remembered then that she had been at work all last night.
The dream stopped after that. I haven't again seen the odd shape of cups and plates in my nighttime adventures. However this became a recurring routine. I would have a dream of something odd then a few days later It would happen. In the following weeks, my bathroom flooded, my refrigerator moved into the living room, and I woke up to every window being smashed.
After the windows my Mom became increasingly uneasy, she got them fixed but before that she called the police suspecting a break in. They told her that if there was nothing stolen and nobody hurt then they didn't think it was one. The weirdest part about it was that there is a window above my best, it should have woken me up or even hurt me when the glass shattered, but no.
That brings us to last night, everything was going fine, and I had gotten used to the routine to be honest. I had been standing on my porch at about 2:00 A.M (don't ask why, I just couldn't sleep) when I noticed a figure standing by the edge of the road. He wore a tall black trench coat, and a hat that covered his face.
He saw me look and then opened the jacket. I don't remember anything after that. I woke up in the chair I had been in and looked towards the road, he wasn't there. After investigating by myself I found some footprints. I'm don't get scared easily but this small house outside of Red Rock Texas is not being easy on me. I'll keep you all posted.
Until next time -Nick
