Painful Memories shortscarystories

"Hi"

I stood in silence. This had been the first attempt I sent a message after weeks since that accident happened. I didn't know what to expect, and my emotions were mixed up. There was sadness, hope, painful memories buried deep inside⏤

bleep "Hi. Cath, is that you?"

My heart jumped in joy when suddenly a reply came in, but also the pain. I wasn't sure what to type back.

"Phil, how you're doing?"

bleep "Fine, I guess, considering what's happened. :) "

He sent a smile emoji. He smiled, didn't he? So I smiled here too with him. I launched my email app, and sent a short email to Alice, my coworker: "Thank you, it works."

bleep "How about you? How are you holding up?"

I rubbed my neck. This was an unexpected question, considering it was coming from him. But nevertheless...

"I'm okay. I'm a big girl, remember? :) Another month, and I probably already can wave it off."

I was hesitated, whether or not to continue.

"Still, it's lonely without you here. :( "

Then silence again. The longest silence I have ever felt.

bleep "I miss you too, C. But you know things can never going back like before."

My tears rolled out. I walked out of my working room to the refrigerator and took a beer out of the shelf.

"Tonight I'm not in the mood for doing anything. Will you keep me company?"

bleep "Sure. Anything for you C. :) "

"Do you remember when we were still in high school, and Mr. Powell sent us to detention room because of the whole gum thing?"

bleep "Yea, Ms. Lily's curly hair was all stick together with the gums I've secretly stick to her hair lol."

"Ikr. :D he was furious because you managed to slip another gum into his chair. You were such little devil."

bleep "But you're who chewed all those gums and distracted him lol. Couldn't do it without you. :) "

I stayed in silence. I remembered how he smiled. The most handsome smile I had ever seen. How I missed our time together.

beep beep An email notification, from Alice. Only a simple text "What works?"

I wrote I quick reply. "About Phil. I can communicate with him. Thank you. Love xoxo"

bleep Phil sent another message. "You know, I should probably also thanking Alice for putting me up together. :) "

I giggled. "Yes, she was working hard about you. She has fed all the text messages and emails you sent to me into the neural network, and she promised if everything works alright, I can talk with you again, just like if you were still alive."

beep beep Another email from Alice. "Phil? Cath, I haven't told you about this, but the server fried yesterday. I have to start over."

Wait, what?

bleep "C, I wish we can speak face to face. Can you open the door for me?"

Then there were knocking sounds on the door.
