Our local Save-a-lot has a big 3-days only meat sale from time to time, and yesterday was it. They had the 10 lb. frozen leg quarters for $3.70 (37 cents a pound) and chicken breasts for .99/lb. I still have a few chicken breasts from last .99 sale, so I didn't get any. Instead, I got the sirloin tip 5 pounder for $2.99/lb. They call it the 5 pounder, but it's sometimes a little more. Mine was 5.55 lbs. for a total of $16.60. I got a large sirloin tip roast and 8 small steaks. Also picked up a 12 oz. pack of salad shrimp for $2.99. Then I went over to Lucky's and got a pack of 85% ground meat for $1.99 a pound for a total of $4.72. I would have gotten more, but I only have my refrigerator freezer, so with all that other stuff...no room since I also got some cheap frozen veggies on sale.
The grand total was 28.01 for enough meat to last me a month at least, since I tend to stretch by making stews and soups.
I also got a 15 lb. bag of Idaho potatoes for $2.99 and a bunch of produce specials, like a 3 lb. bag of gala apples for $1.99. At Lucky's I got 4 HUGE red bell peppers for 2/$1 and a qt. of strawberries for $1.99.
So I had a totally amazing day shopping yesterday, and it made me extremely happy. Only problem was I got home and realized I didn't have enough ziploc freezer bags to put it all away, so I went to DG and got some, and now have a freezer full of stacks of meat all broken up into single-serve portions.
I love it when a plan comes together!
