Apartment maintenance likely turned on all the lights and AC in my new rental studio nonstop for an entire month before I moved in. Am I responsible for paying that month's electricity? legaladvice

I signed the lease on my apartment in Chicago mid July but did not move in until today (8/2). I'm OK with paying for July's electricity if it's only the cost of say having the refrigerator and microwave plugged in. But when I walked in this afternoon, I noticed all the lights and the AC were on, and that those that were not on were broken; likely from being turned on for so long. I looked up my electrical bill and it's estimated that my 500 sq ft studio in Chicago used up 1047 kWh in the last month. Can I legally refuse to pay the majority of this bill, considering that I was not living in the apartment and that any electric use was not my doing? Thanks in advance!
