My boyfriend and I moved across the country and needed to find a place to live. I responded to a Craigslist add to rent a room. We decided to go check it out. The girl we talked to seemed normal enough and she she showed us the room as well as told us that the second bathroom off the living room would be ours.
She ran a background check and told us we could move in. We paid her a $200 deposit.
We moved in and things got rather awkward when we would try to use the kitchen every burner would have pots of food just sitting on them for hours and the sink would always been full of dishes not just a few dishes I mean full to the top.
After a few weeks of that we decided to get a microwave for our room and wash our dishes in our bathroom.
After about a month of that we came home on a Friday to find 2 preteen girls sitting on the couch. The girl we were renting from already had a 4 year old that lived there. We just assumed they were her daughter's friends or cousin coming over to play. Those girls never left. So suddenly there were 3 unsupervised kids living in the living room literally sleeping on recliners.
After those little girls moved in our bathroom was no longer private and they went through a roll of toilet paper day. I had to stop storing shampoo and other supplies in the bathroom.
At no point during all this were we told anything. We had virtually no communication with the people we were renting from. They literally acted like we didn't exist.
They also had a untrained golden retriever puppy that would chew up everything and they would then beat after finding there house destroyed when they would come home. The dog would attack me whenever I'd leave the house.
Just when we thought it couldn't get any worse we got a text from the girl we were renting from that the owner of the house wanted to talk to us. So I called her I'll call her H. Well H told me that the girl renting was thousands of dollars behind in rent and was going to be evicted. We gave H a total of how much money we paid and the fact we gave a deposit. H found us a place to stay
We didn't get our deposit back when H got evicted but we did get to witness the police removing them from the property. Wedid help clean out the rental and we found that the kitchen had been infested with bugs and there were needles in the refrigerator.
I don't recommend renting a room on Craigslist ever.
