A question we are often asked is "does eLiquid go bad?", and what can you do to reduce or prevent it.
A quick answer to both questions is YES, with some discussion due.
If you are a novice user, we may suggest making smaller orders initially until you are familiarized with your consumption and storage habits. Properly mixed eLiquid can remain usable and be vaped for 2 years quite safely. However, there are factors that can affect the shelf life of your eLiquid.
Two factors that will affect the longevity of your eLiquid are heat and light. Propylene Glycol is a virucide as well as a bactericide. While PG remains unaltered by these two micro-organisms, other components are susceptible to degradation.
STORING YOUR eLIQUID
Flavors are prone to taint and spoilage. Nicotine is no exception. Light, heat, moisture and air can all contribute to degradation in quality and taste. This can be minimized with a few very simple tips. Keep your eLiquid in a (preferably) airtight container such as Tupperware or equivalent. Then store it in a cool, dry, dark and moisture free place. Most of us would call this a cupboard or drawer.
Liquid nicotine retains best in a freezer, but unless you are buying large quantities it is unnecessary. In many things, nicotine included, the low temperatures of a home freezer environment will reduce the speed of oxidation and prevent the growth of mold or bacteria. With chemical reactions slowed to a minimum, nicotine will retain it’s freshness for an extended time. There have been concerns expressed with the potential of glass containers breaking due to expansion, but eLiquid is a general exception to this rule. The freezing point, resulting in bottle shattering expansion, for both PG and VG are considerably lower than anything offered in a home freezer. Therefore, we can conclude that the freezer is the optimal storage consideration.
Maintain a storage temperature between 18 – 22 degrees Celsius (65 – 72 F)
Refrigerator storage has resulted in a variety of feedback. Some report great success, while others find it not so optimal. For the average user making their purchase once a month or so, we simply recommend following the above procedure and maintaining a storage temperature between 18 – 22 degrees Celsius (65 – 72 F). We can’t emphasize enough to avoid direct sunlight and heat from any source.
Concentrated food flavors can be a dicey proposition. With the rising popularity of DIY users attempting to create custom blends, there is always room for incompatible combinations of flavoring resulting in an unstable concoction. Of course this is by no means a definitive statement, with the advances in flavor development and chemistry, this is becoming less prevalent. Fruit flavors are one of the least stable, they are highly prone to decay because of the esters hydrolyzing into acids. This can taint the entire mix with a stinky odor and sour taste.
DETECTING BAD eLIQUID
Simple settling and separation of ingredients in your bottle is normal, give your eLiquid a good shake before each use. If your eLiquid doesn’t mix even with a prolonged shaking, you must consider that your eLiquid has gone stale. It may not even be worth trying to vape at this point.
Again, consider smaller orders for stock on hand. Using a basic formula, a pack a day smoker will use approximately 1ml of eLiquid per day, so a 30 ml bottle will last you upwards of a month. If you want to experiment with different flavors, try ordering smaller (10ml) bottles, you can increase the size of individual favorites in your next order.
